the marsh wren is a small passerine bird found in wetlands throughout canada, the USA, and mexico. they prefer habitat with tall vegetation, such as cattails; these birds’ nests are oval structures constructed on the side of tall vegetation by the male. typically, the male fills a territory with multiple nests; it’s unclear why these ‘decoys’ are built, but some believe they are a part of courtship. they primarily feed on insects, along with arachnids and snails. these birds are often highly territorial, and will destroy nests and eggs (and kill offspring) of competitors, including other marsh wrens and occasionally their own young.

BOTD: Purple Gallinule
Tumblr media
Photo: Andy Morffew
"This gallinule is a striking bird, big, brightly colored, and noisy. With its strong legs and long toes, it runs about on open shorelines, walks on floating lily pads, and clambers through marshes and waterside trees, flicking its short tail nervously. Nods its head as it swims; flies short distances with legs dangling conspicuously. Found mainly in the southeast and the tropics, but single birds sometimes stray far to the north at any season."
