(If you're alrght with another poorly articulated question from an obnoxious high schooler) Do you have thoughts on academics and their position in a labor framework? I know some grad students and have never been quite sure where they fit because they don't always work with "capital" in a traditional sense. Professors are odd to me because they are under university contract, but rather than get paid by the university they often get their own funding from the government. Or graduate sudents, who are often unionized, but I know a paleontology student who studies shark fossils who says he doesnt really consider what he does "making surplus value."

ok well that last person is simply confused lol. graduate students exist because the university profits from having us; it is a capitalist institution. most directly we usually work as teaching assistants or research assistants (or else pay tuition) and more indirectly, graduate programs get funding and university support because their existence contributes to a university's rankings, prestige factor, &c, which is to say its (perceived) profitability. plenty of us study things that don't produce much directly lucrative research, but this does not mean the university keeps us around for shits and giggles or some kind of laudatory interest in knowledge for its own sake. it is a capitalist institution and acts in the financial interest of its owners / beneficiaries.

anyway wrt faculty members, they are also employed by the university because it profits from them (or hopes to, anyway). i think many people get confused by tenureship; tenure is indeed fairly cushy as far as employment contracts go, but it is is still an employment contract, and most faculty are not actually tenured anyway. academics are a classic example of the 'professional-managerial class', which is not a marxian term but is a useful one for identifying those 'upper-middle class' members differentiated by their professional qualifications and status; the prestige and perceived utility of academic knowledge production is partially what makes academics an attractive target for a lot of government and NGO funding. state funding of academic research ofc has numerous functions but, and not to put too fine a point on it, a capitalist state also invests money in things because it is hoping for some kind of return on investment, eg in the form of directly profitable inventions, soft power, &c.

there are distinctions here between different academic employment statuses. an adjunct or contingent hire is paid by the university solely to teach, making their labourer status fairly straightforward. with tenured or tenure-track positions, yes there may also be money coming from outside; however, this doesn't negate the fact that the university is trying to profit from its faculty (else it wouldn't hire them). the professional-managerial class has certain characteristics of both proletariat and bourgeoisie, and there is some variation between academics as a very select few do attain the kind of household name status that can turn them into basically a personal brand. again though: the university wants to extract value from the work (both teaching and research) of academics it hires, and so do outside sources of funding for research projects. knowledge production should not be mystified or abstracted in ways that obfuscate the financial interests of involved parties; though it attains a prestige that few other commodities do, this is still a process that is embedded within the overall operating logics of capitalism.

an additional consideration wrt internal academic class politics is that many faculty use graduate students, postdocs, and even undergrads to perform or assist with their research. these arrangements vary in structure (and between disciplines) but in general, this does mean that many academics produce papers, books, &c that depend upon the labour of many people and rarely compensate these people equally to themselves. this can take the form of a more overtly employer-employee relationship between a professor and their underlings (for example, some labs are run this way) or it can be the case that it's another party (a publisher, say) who is reaping most of the surplus value squeezed from grad / undergrad / postdoc labour. in any case it is important to keep in mind that professors can and often do take on employer (ie, small capitalist) roles in relation to other employees of the university, even though the professors themselves are there because the university and other institutions pay them and profit from their labour.

i hope this is a useful start; obviously there is lots else to be said about the economics of the university and knowledge production as a capitalist process. in general when you are trying to think through this my advice would be not to let the presentation of the university as some kind of cerebral place of enlightenment confuse a materialist analysis of the flows of capital. plenty of workers and capitalists deal with commodities that are immaterial in the sense that 'knowledge' is, or are imbued with similar social meaning and value; the university deals with knowledge production but this does not make it any less an employer (ie, a capitalist institution) than any other institution operating in a capitalist context.

Chapter 4: Someone From The Deep

-Part 1

Michaels hunger started to become more notisible, he feels weaker and his head started hurting.

They both go to the eadge of a cliff to find an ocean many meters down, michael loes his cool a bit because of hunger and sits angrily on the ground

-whats the point, i cant swin and even if i could i dout any sea life found aproche me, great. Just great -why dont you use my powers Michael?- Michael looks at Volt with confussion in his eyes -powers? -correct, wanne see?- Michael noded -firstly you need to open your hand and focus a bit, you need to imagen a line in your mind, then cut it -what? -just focus.. - michael opens his hand to reaveal a yellow leends infused in to his hand, he then closes his eyes and focuses. Then he seas a yellow orb, that slowly aproches him he seas it when the orb got closed enought it turned in to a line, Michael then cut it and felt a slight pain in his right eye, he opened his left eye, holding the right eye shut, he was suprised at what he saw next. The same orb now in this hand, leviationg, conected to the leends by something that resembled a string, Michael then opened his other eye that then activeted soemthing. A floating panel appered, it was conected to his right eye and the yellow orb, michael was confused then he turned to see Volt, he had a slight smirk on his face.

-first time huh? -what... is this? -your personal projection that aplies to the real world, meaining it can interact with the real world -how does it work -you have this panel that appered after you opened your eye, you can modify three things: the nail, orb and the conection, in other words the string -why are some of my options blured or not responding at all? -this can mean two things: you havent discovered the part yet or your too weak, that's why your orb is really transparent, to use your orb you need to eat to get the energy -michael modifies the orb to have a hook like end, when hes ready he throws the spear down. Surpisingly the spear springs out like an arrow and hits something, michael starts pulling and the fish seamed to dont have any weight tight to it, but the moment it flops on the land michael is unable to pick it up again

A gigant mechanical octopus emerged from the deep, Michael quickly took his backpack and tryed to ran away, but then the octopus spoke -wAiT! - It yelled out, wail setteling on the ground. -youve meet something like this before?! -no! - the machinery then started to open up to reaveal something. Or rather someone.

A blue octopus, dresses almoust like a human emerged from inside the mech, behind him was a mysterious green blob that was hanging from the cealing. The octopuss had a weard ring around his neak that projected a pixelated screen but the screen is slowly disapearing and turning in to a liquid, it alos has green gloves on every tentacle that he has, it also has a pair of green goggles that he slowly removed from his eyes, reaviling two diffrent colored small eyes the left one bright green, and the other one deep blue, it looked at Volt and Michael with curiousity. Both Volt and Michael where really confused, but aproched the octopus slowly -hello? -human what are you doing hire? -what do you mean? Who are you? -the octopus looked a bit abresed -oh sorry im not used to talking to humans, im Vurpl nice to meet you! -well im Michael and this is Volt -as for my question what are you doing hire? -Volt anwsered -im guiding him to a city, it just over two hills from hire -ohh.. oh no. Im sorry to inform you but the city that you probobly reafering to dosent exsist anymore -what do you mean, ive heard from many that there is a city there -i live near from hire that city was there 200 years ago, beyond that is an infinite filed where you get devourd by the grass thats 1000m from hire - Volt looked first angry, but before he said anything he turned his expresion in to a sad face -you really know that -yeah... - Michael looks at Volt the at Vurpl again -then where are we gonna go now? -i know a vault with all the informationyou need -what serial number? -number 87, you know it - Volt looked happy at the response he got -Michael,he know where it is!! -what? -Vault 87 will have all the information well need to get to the safest and bestes city there is, and the best part its that the informations are constantly updated -you what a little bit over... -my appologies -will you take us there Vulpl? -i can take you a place that is near, you know, water doesnt get there so my mech will not work.. -alright lets go then -come!

-just let me get all the systems ready and we will there in no time! - Vurpl entered the gigant blob of green liquid, and a lot of small interactive panels surounded him. He used all his eight tentacles to intecart with all of them. Then the door that they came in was now closed shut, and the mech started moving back in to the water, it fell from the cliff and plumit down into the waters, Michael looked out one of the windows that looked like the mechs eyes from outside, the window was clean, no green color was visible, just the wide ocean. It was beautifull, full of all kinds of fish, and other sea creatures. Some fish where curious and came up to the windows to look inside. Michael looked at them with amaze as, the fish also looked at him with curiousity.

-you see view like this everyday? -yeah.. but it gets boring the more you look -really? -yeah, it also gets lonely hire -no wonders, your are a smart creature thats probobly the only one hire, by the way how are you still alive? Dont octopuses live like 8 months? -when the time substance was still alive, my master sacroficed himself so that the eternal life will go to me, i dont know if it was a good idea or bad, but im glad that im alive- Volt spoke out now- what kind of substance are you in? -oh its acid -how? Three Wishes Institute - Dorms

I posted the overall school lore and a quick rundown of the dorms in this post but I wanted to make a post going into each dorm in more detail - as well as the sorting ceremony that three wishes does.

Three Wishes prides itself on being a school that anyone of any skill level can apply to and be accepted. Of all private magic highschools, they definitely have the lowest standards. This doesn’t mean they have a lot of students yet however. The school has only recently reopened and as such a lot of the dorms are still pretty empty in terms of student count.

So not a lot of people outside of the school know of the special sorting ceremony that takes place.

Sorting:

Three wishes puts an emphasis on community and not letting which dorm a student is placed in dictate how they act at the school - the dorms are essentially only supposed to be treated as where you live during the school year as well as being able to be placed around like minded individuals to come together and help others. But they do have a special ceremony to put students into these dorms.

After the full orientation, one by one the students walk through a portal. The structure of the portal is carved out of stone said to be part of the original cave of wonders. The portal judges them on their ‘worth’ and ability and teleports the students to the dorm that it thinks that the student will work best in. For the ceremonial clothes, it’s only required that students wear an all white outfit -because when they pass through the portal their white clothes will be dyed the traditional colors of the dorm. This outfit becomes what they wear to other ceremonies and special events - so no two outfits are the same, only the color schemes.

As a side note, it’s rather easy for students to ask to switch dorms if they feel the right one wasn’t picked for them, but it does require a sit down meeting with dorm reps from the current and desired dorms, as well as one of the headmasters to talk over why that is.

Now onto the dorms themselves:

As a reminder from my first post, the dorms are more like large mansions with a bit of yard space to them and are found within walking distance of the school itself (with one exception, will get to that below). There’s no special magic to teleport the students to these dorms, the magic instead takes place once the students pass through the front gate. There’s a bit of illusion magic around the dorm to make it appear as if they’re somewhere else - the headmasters not wanting them to always have the school looming over them while they’re relaxing in their new homes.

 Nightingale

Founded on the hard work and dedication of a princess’s companions, members of this dorm are no strangers to teamwork and getting the job done. It’s said that there’s no miracle students in this dorm can’t pull off in a short amount of time.

When at this dorm, the scenery is a clear spring day. The surrounding land of the dorm is small but houses a stable with two horses, a chicken coop with a handful of chickens, and plenty of plants that the students take turns taking care of. The dorm itself is one of the larger ones to make up for the smaller surrounding area.

The dorm itself is fairly simple, white and blue paint on the outside, hardwood floors and mostly white walls on the inside. It does require a lot of cleaning but the students make fun games out of it so it’s never too much of a drag. There aren’t a lot of decorations as the sudents like it simple - the faniests decorations are handmade large scale projects from students; for example there’s a room just showing off clothes that some students in the dorm have personally made. There is also a sewing room, which one of the current dorm reps (Rue) put together which is located in a tower connected to the dorm, but it’s a bit of a climb to get to.

The dorm is filled with secret passages which most of the students use to get across the dorm quickly since it’s so big. Only the dorm members know the school also has such secret passages - which is one of the many tools the dorm members use to pull off their ‘miracles’. It’s a dorm wide secret and everyone has to promise on their first day at the dorm that they will keep the passages to themselves unless it’s an emergency.

The dorm’s traditional colors are: blue, silver, and white

Founded on the tradition and devotion of miners, members of this dorm specialize in working long hours and putting 100% into everything they do. Students here notice the smaller details in anything and are said to be able to craft nearly anything asked.

When entering the gates of the dorm, it appears as if you’re in a lush forest.  There’s a stream that runs around the dorm and into the school lake. There’s a wishing well outside which most students in the dorm will wish for good luck on things like tests or contests.

Outside and inside the dorm appears more like a cottage than a dorm. It has a very down to earth vibe and is one of the more low tech of the dorms. They sometimes have problems with the electricity going out or some doors getting stuck, etc. But if it gets bad enough the students just fix it. No one in the dorm seems to care too much and they like the work. Some of the students are even asked to help out with repairing the main school buildings or other dorms if they need assistance.

This dorm is the only one with a basement - which acts as a giant workshop for students. Mostly a woodshop but it’s sectioned off for students to make anything within reason and not get overrun by other student’s projects. A lot of these projects can be seen on display in the yard of the dorm or in the main school itself.

The dorm’s traditional colors are: purple, blue, red, and yellow

Wondrous

Founded on the cleverness and protective instincts of a royal couple’s most trusted confidants, members of this dorm sometimes have questionable methods but overall have hearts of gold. Students in this dorm are proactive in calling out unfair rules and try to work for changes and reforms. 

When passing through the gate it looks as if the dorm is surrounded by an oasis in the desert. There’s a large fountain in the front of the dorm with lots of seating around it - it’s the main social area for the dorm. Inside the dorm is very open, with lots of lofts and half stories over closed off floors. These are normally connected by ladders and not stairs - some students even parkour run up the walls to reach another level. Then they use ropes or poles to get down. The only closed off areas are some bedrooms, bathrooms, and the kitchen. Some bedrooms don’t have doors and instead have cloth / beads - but this is on a person - person basis.

There are two towers on either side of the dorm with the most extravagant bedrooms of the dorm, and these are normally saved for dorm reps as they can oversee most of the dorm and can keep an eye out. The towers are connected by a rope walkway that the reps can use to get to the other easily if there’s more than one rep. In the case of only one rep, they use it to get across the dorm quickly often take turns sleeping in/keeping a lookout in each bedroom

The dorm’s traditional colors are: Green, White, Blue, and gold

 Guardian

Found on the honor and strength of dragons, students of this dorm are known to follow a code of honor and are very protective of one another. They are great with helping other student’s physical and mental well beings, acting as trainers and confidants.

When entering the gates the dorm looks like it’s surrounded by a giant stone garden, and the sky always looks like twilight until it’s officially night time. The dorm itself looks like a large temple. The colors of the dorm are white, gold, and red, and instead of normal lights there are floating lanterns. Most dorm rooms have at least one wall that’s just a giant mirror.

There is a smaller actual temple in the back area of the dorm grounds for students to actually go pray at. It’s normal for students to pray before major events at the school or before going on trips to wish for safe travels. Some students even go every day to pray while others are more lax about it and only do so before the major events.

There’s also a giant fire pit outside where students gather around for bonfires and cook meals and dance. These can be used at any time (except after curfew) by any amount of students as long as they let a dorm rep know beforehand.

There’s also a dojo within the dorm where students can go to practice martial arts or other physical activities (like gymnastics or yoga).

The dorm’s traditional colors are: Red, Gold, Black, and green

Lapinhole

Founded on the curiosity and madness of a queen’s subjects, members of this dorm are known to be eccentric and creative. A lot of students in this dorm are mysterious and have a strange method of helping others, but even through the confusion a lot of students rely on students from this dorm for a little more fun in their lives.

This is the only dorm that has a special gimmick to get to it, you have to jump down a large rabbit hole and get magically transported to the gate. Truthfully only the headmasters and one of the dorm reps know exactly where the dorm itself is located. When you want to leave the dorm you jump through a different hole and end up being thrown out of the same hole you first jumped into.

The dorm’s grounds look like a giant tea party - lots of outdoor seating and places to relax. There’s a couple of outdoor cooking areas as well. The time of day can range drastically as the two dorm leaders can never decide on what they want it to be.

The dorm itself looks like it’s split in two - half of the dorm looking like it comes straight out of a forest, the exterior of the dorm looking almost as if it’s shaped from wood - the other half looking like a more polished and clean castle with red, black, and white colors.

Students normally get to choose which side of the dorm they live on, but are often seen changing rooms / sides every semester. It’s customary that members move rooms at least 10 times during their first year.

The forest half of the dorm has carpet that looks like grass and flowers that speak. There’s signs that say things like ‘this way’ and ‘that way’ and some actually have directions as this half of the dorm layout is the more confusing half. Some areas are open to the outside with skylights and large windows.

The castle side of the dorm is very pristine and hardly a thing looks out of place. It looks like one would expect a castle to look like.There are suits of armor that occasionally move around and do chores. This side of the dorm is more orderly and easy to navigate. There is a large foyer in the middle where dorm meetings happen and one can easily see the split of the dorm between forest and castle.

One thing someone will notice upon entering the dorm grounds is that no clock ever has the right time. Even digital clocks on phones are showing different times - moving too fast or two slow. Students in this dorm are often late to classes or appointments unless they rely on friends in other dorms to message them the real time. There’s a rumor that one clock within the dorm is correct - but no one knows which one.

 Servireu

Founded on the faith and loyalty of a Beast prince’s servants, members of this dorm are known to be generous, not judgemental, and extremely helpful. A lot of these students are at the top of their classes and are known for being excellent tutors for others.

Entering the gates brings you to a large courtyard with a fountain in the middle. It’s entirely stone save for a couple of areas for rose bushes and trees. While the front courtyard doesn’t have a lot of life, the back of the dorm has a larger garden, the students also take care of it themselves and barely use any magic on it. They want their hard work to show through instead of using magic. The dorm itself looks like a large Victorian style castle, it can look a little intimidating to those who first visit. The exterior is mostly dark colors while the inside is mostly light colored. The sky normally looks as if it’s late afternoon but it is prone to rain a lot - the dorm reps aren’t sure why.

There’s a ballroom and large library which are the staples of the dorm - often other students come to the dorm to study in the library (with the dorm rep’s permission) and the ballroom has sometimes hosted large events for the school. Dinners at this dorm are also known to be extravagant and it’s not uncommon for dorm reps from other dorms to come for dinner.

This is the second largest dorm and the students are in charge of keeping it clean - there’s a strict schedule that all the students have to follow as far as cleaning duties go.

The dorm’s traditional colors are: Gold, red, brown, blue.

He can't control his words when he's angry. He say some thinks, what he usualy doesn't even image to say.

Exacly to Fenton.

He's now alone, in dark labolatory in the middle of the night as usualy.

He mussed to finish the project. He was starting all over again by Fenton who messed up and ruin it, as usualy.

Everythink seemed like there is nothing new.

He tought off all the thinks what he saied to Fenton, not even to todays. That he was always pushing him down, making his rest of the day be completly bad, begin sarcastic, or even make him cry today.
