You know, it's interesting to me that I saw an article as I was scrolling through my dash this morning that (supposedly) blames the U.S. for being deeply involved in a genocide in Sudan. You might think from such a description that we'd be talking about U.S. military aid or boots on the ground or the CIA or something like that, and not just the Trump administration tanking our diplomatic efforts and Biden's administration not making the best decisions to right the ship. You might also think that such an article would not include a section like this:
David Satterfield, who replaced Feltman as US special envoy to the Horn of Africa and who has since resigned, said that Washington did not have anything but bad choices in Sudan, and therefore had to strike deals with the Sudanese military. According to Satterfield, “If there is ever an opportunity to return to a path towards restoration of a civilian-led government, you’re going to have to talk to the military then as well.
You also might not think that such an article would outright reference Russian involvement in Sudan, which it does.
Russia believes that its strong presence in Sudan will augment its status in Africa and the Middle East, which is considered an American redoubt. Since 2014, and with Moscow’s aspirations to exploit African mineral riches, the Kremlin has strengthened its ties to Sudan in order to ameliorate western sanctions following its invasion of Crimea, sanctions that became even harsher after its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.16 In 2017, former Sudanese President al-Bashir visited Russia and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two countries agreed to establish a holding company run by the paramilitary Wagner Group to mine gold ore. Russia also signed a 25-year lease in December 2020 to build a military base at Port Sudan on the Red Sea that can receive nuclear-powered ships. It was also interesting that Hemedti headed an official delegation to Moscow on the eve of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
And while we're talking about Russian involvement in Sudan, which is why I'm here in the first place, it's really really really interesting to me that this article was phrased as proof that the U.S. was heavily involved in genocide in Sudan, despite the fact that the Russian Wagner group (accused of war crimes in Ukraine) has been providing missiles and military training to the Sudanese paramilitary group RSF while smuggling gold out of Sudan to fund their own activities in Ukraine. Fun fact about the Wagner group: They're also heavily involved in social media misinformation campaigns.
Wasn't there a Russian misinformation campaign on tumblr leading up to the Presidential elections in 2016?
And despite the "mysterious" death of Yevgeny Prigozhin in a plane crash (a short time after his aborted march on Moscow), Russia is still working on bringing the Wagner organization back under their control. Because, you know, they still have that whole invasion of Ukraine they're working on. An invasion of Ukraine that would sure be a whole lot easier for them if they could convince Americans to stop providing military support to Ukraine. They're already doing pretty nicely with the Republican party, but the Democrats (and the American left in general) have been harder to get on-side.
It does kind of feel like tying American military involvement in other countries to active genocide would be a great way to discourage people on the American left from supporting continued involvement in Ukraine, wouldn't it?
We're slightly less than a year away from the next American presidential election. There is no reason to believe that the Russian propaganda machine, which has already been operating at full blast since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February of 2022, is going to slow down. This quote from the linked article is particularly chilling:
A particular challenge is that people tend to spread falsehoods “farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth”; this is particularly the case for false political news (Vosoughi, Roy and and Aral, 2018[7]). For example, one study found that tweets containing false information were 70% more likely to be retweeted than accurate tweets (Brown, 2020[8]). Another study found that false information on Facebook attracts six times more engagement than factual posts (Edelson, 2021[9]). In addition, feedback loops between the platforms and traditional media can serve to further amplify disinformation, magnifying the risk that disinformation can be used to deliberately influence public conversations, as well as confuse and discourage the public.
I think it's important to remember, especially now, that we are capable of spreading misinformation. The article about U.S. involvement in Sudan wasn't placed on there by an algorithm. This is fucking tumblr. That was one of my mutuals. Because they're concerned about American military intervention and they're against genocide and it sounded bad and they were upset and they didn't think to read the article. Because they didn't spend the time of Prigozhin's march on Moscow mainlining information on the Wagner group the way that I did, so they didn't go "Hey, Sudan? Wait a minute --" the way I did. Because misinformation that isn't targeted at your group is designed to be easy to spot, so you'll think that the misinformation that is targeted to your group will also be easy to spot, and it fucking isn't.
Because this culture of "If you care, you'll share" has gotten people to click that reblog button without thinking twice about it.
Don't keep falling for it. You don't have to spend an hour digging up sources and pulling out quotes for a ten-note post the way that I did. I'm like this as a human. It's fine if you're not. But if you're not even going to click the link to read the article and actually read it critically (or if there's no sources at all except a twitter screenshot, which I've also seen quite a bit of), then don't reblog it. Save it as a draft for when you have time to do the research, or just don't do anything with it at all. You're not obligated.
And if you have the relevant background to spot the disinfo, I mean -- again, look, you're not obligated to take that hour and search those sources. Even I don't do this all the time. It's hard, it's frustrating, and it will not spread the way the disinfo does. I'm gonna see that genocide post like five times at least on my dash, and I'm probably going to see it at least once from someone who has at least liked this post (if not reblogged it as well). But if you can. If you have the energy and the time. Try to put a little info out there. It might help someone.
That's all. Be good. Be skeptical.
#disinformation#misinformation#russia#wagner group#sudan#ukraine#like i don't have mad love for the us military industrial complex either#but that doesn't mean i'm going to blindly support russian misinfo campaigns designed at distracting from their own atrocities#we can suck and they can suck we are both capable of sucking#but the us military is under the control of biden and russia's is under the control of putin and they're honestly not comparable right now#like it's not even close#so try not to fall for it#we all fail at that sometimes but try

Please read Halas' story. Her and her family have gone through and are going through great suffering.
Help Hala's Family Evacuate From Sudan
Current progress: €3,184/€33,000
"Today it's horrible here. Lives are being lost every day and tragically some of the individuals are our own neighbors. Everytime we hear artillery bombing sounds we think we are next. Our fear and desperation are at its peak and the situation has become utterly terrifying. Immediate action is urgently required. I'm so tired of this. We can't handle it no more." - Hala in a message to @/jinforjustice on ig

2025 / 03
Aperçu of the week
"In the midst of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer."
(Albert Camus - French philosopher, author, dramatist, journalist and political activist)
Bad News of the Week
While the whole world is looking at the current war zones in Ukraine, the Middle East and, to a certain extent, North America, the world's biggest refugee crisis is taking place largely unnoticed: according to the UN, 25 million people, half of the population, are in urgent need of help. More than twelve million people have been displaced, tens of thousands killed. A catastrophe that nobody is talking about. It's about Sudan. Never heard of it? Exactly: that's the problem when a country has no lobby at all. It is of no geostrategic importance, has no advocates in the West and simply does not feature in the media.
Since April 2023, the official army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia have been engaged in a bloody power struggle sparked by disputes over the transition to democracy. RSF commander Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, who became rich through illegal gold trading, had fought with up to 30,000 paramilitary fighters on behalf of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates against the Iranian-backed Houthi in Yemen. On April 15, 2023, he deployed his RSF for an attempted coup against the military government of Sudan. Open warfare has been raging ever since.
It is difficult to say who is the bad guy in this game. But it doesn't really matter. Human rights organizations are making serious accusations against both parties to the civil war. These include ethnic expulsions and sexual violence. The suffering of war is always greatest among the civilian population. Among the elderly and women who simply want to live in peace. And among the children whose future is robbed by war. Often enough, instead of going to school, they are abused as child soldiers. War is never a good thing. In the last 77 years, there has not been a single day of peace in the world. That really says it all.
Good News of the Week
Ceasefire in Gaza. A headline that I thought impossible just a short time ago. And yet it happened - apparently with the support of the outgoing and incoming US administrations. Both have probably made it clear to Benjamin Netanyahu that they would no longer support his radical, human rights-denying course. I don't care who takes credit for it. The result is decisive, because the civilian population in the now largely destroyed Gaza Strip has truly suffered enough.
And then the ceasefire was actually implemented, albeit a few hours late. First, the mutual shelling was stopped, then the first three Israeli hostages were handed over by Hamas to the Red Cross. Then the first of hundreds of aid shipments were allowed to cross the border from Israel and Egypt and Palestinian prisoners were released. All in all, a development that was also demanded with increasing vehemence by the Israeli population. Since Bibi was increasingly accused of sacrificing the well-being of the hostages for his own geostrategic policy and to maintain his own power.
Of course, criticism was inevitable. Internationally and nationally. The party of the far-right Minister for National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, even went so far as to announce its withdrawal from the governing coalition. Following the approval of the “scandalous agreement” with the radical Islamic Hamas (on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip), the three ministers of the Otzma Yehudit (meaning "Jewish Strength") party submitted their letters of resignation. This can only be good for the further pacification of the conflict. After the formation of the government in 2022, for example, a commentary in the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth ("Latest News") stated that Netanyahu's Likud party was now “a hostage in the hands of a group of anti-democratic, racist and homophobic people who support terrorism”. Now there is simply less gasoline that could be poured on the fire.
Personal happy moment of the week
Sometimes I find it difficult to define a moment that really has something to do with a personal feeling of happiness. On the other hand, I get scolded when this ray of hope is missing in the often not exactly joyful context of this blog. On the other hand, there are topics in the personal sphere that are precisely that: personal. And for others. So I can only report the following for this week: yes, I had a whole series of moments that made me happy. But as these are someone else's moments, there are no details.
I couldn't care less...
...about the knee-jerk clamor in the political landscape when people start calling for an additional tax. Especially when this demand comes from the Greens, who likely are labeled as overbearing and patronizing. This time it's about the idea of levying social security contributions on investment income. Why not? I'm not even thinking about the rapidly widening gap between rich and poor in this country, but simply about the principle of equality. Financial income is income that should be taxed and levied equally. Regardless of whether it is generated by work, stock market speculation, rental income or lottery winnings. For me, that's not communist, that's fair.
It's fine with me...
...that in a survey conducted by the news magazine Der Spiegel ("The Mirror"), 95% said no to the question of whether they would still buy a Tesla. At the same time, the slogan “I bought this before Elon went crazy” is number 1 in the car sticker category on Amazon. I guess you could call that extra-parliamentary opposition.
As I write this...
...the world is preparing for the handover of power in Washington DC. Two things are certain. Firstly, it will remain peaceful: neither will the Biden administration resist in any way, nor will there be a mob that goes on the rampage. Secondly, there will be a groundbreaking change in the USA. With his experience from the last term, this time with the full support of the Republican Party, the Project 2025 master plan and only loyalists instead of adults in the room, Donald Trump will shape the country according to his will. And this will be so fundamental that another political force - let's see if the Democrats recover at all - will be able to turn back very little. No matter how often Trump talks about the bright future of the USA under his leadership, from Europe's point of view it will be a dark age.
Post Scriptum
In Germany, the last three nuclear power plants were shut down at the beginning of 2023. This was decided by the conservative-led government of Angela Merkel in the wake of the reactor disaster at Fukushima in 2011. As these monsters cannot be shut down just like that, it was a careful, scientific process over a dozen years that could actually build on broad public support. Actually.
Then came Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine and Germany - until then virtually dependent on Russian natural gas - suddenly found itself in the middle of an energy crisis. Reflexively, there were practically immediate cries for an extension of the operating life, if not for the fundamental preservation of these last remaining active nuclear power plants - curiously enough from the conservatives, who were now in opposition. As if it were that simple, which all the scientists involved denied. It came as it came. And Germany, including its industry and thanks to LNG, has survived and is also on schedule with the gradual shutdown of its coal-fired power plants.
But now it's election time. And that is why the CDU/CSU, Merkel's former party, has pushed through a committee of inquiry into the shutdown of nuclear power plants. And since you can't be against your own decision, the official line is that the Social Democrats and the Greens - coincidentally the two democratic rivals in the current Bundestag election campaign - are being accused of not having “openly examined” the extension of the operating life of the power plants. At best, this is puppet theater. At worst, it shakes basic trust in the established parties. To the delight of the far-right AfD, which would like to “tear down all wind turbines”.

STAGNANT CAMPAIGN: Help Sajida and her family evacuate
$38,756/$50,000 CAD
Sajida's campaign was previously shared by Sara (@/bsonblast) and is one of the vetted fundraisers listed on the Sudan Funds website.
This January, Sajida will have been fundraising for an entire year. She and her family should have already met their goal by now, but her campaign has repeatedly fallen into long periods of stagnation.
Sajida is responsible for her younger siblings and their mother. She started this fundraiser to help afford food and evacuation costs for them, but with the repeated stagnation there have been periods where the family was unable to afford even the most basic necessities.
With the inflated cost of goods in Sudan, Sajida's younger brothers have literally been working themselves sick trying to help their family scrape by. This was not the life Sajida wanted them to have. She wants nothing more than to preserve their childhood and provide them with a safe future, where they will have access to an education and the ability to pursue their dreams.
Most of what Sajida has been able to raise has been spent on essential items. Her family urgently needs help to continue to afford goods and be able to evacuate. It's been a year and the goal of $50k is long overdue. Please donate and share.

£15,078/£30,000
Only one donation in the last 4 days
The beautiful people you see in the photos (faces blurred for their privacy) are our aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandfather. They've all been displaced from their homes in Khartoum over a year ago. They're now all living in a makeshift home in the desert, waiting for the day to return home.
My cousins haven't been to class in a year. My uncles have lost their jobs. All their belongings were stolen. They live in a home with no windows or air conditioning in a climate that can reach 50 ℃ (122F).
(where they store all their belongings)
Your funds will go to:
- Getting them passports
- Getting them visas to Egypt/KSA
- Travel funds
- Supporting them with food, water, transport, medicine, and any other needs while we get their travel plans sorted
If you can spare even £1 that would be massive help. If not, sharing is just as helpful <3

$19,731/25,000 CAD
No progress for over a week
Help Raghad's family evacuate Sudan!
Raghad El Niwairi has been fundraising tirelessly for over a year to help her family leave Sudan safely. The family has elderly and disabled members who are struggling with the immense strain of multiple displacements, as well as children and adolescents who are at particular risk of violence—including the possibility of being abducted as child soldiers.
Travel is expensive, and in addition to flight tickets and legal papers, the family also have continuing daily expenses for shelter, food, clothing, hygiene products, etc. Raghad and her family in Canada are already doing everything they can to provide for their Sudanese family, but conditions are becoming more dire by the day. Famine due to RSF crop burning is causing food prices to skyrocket, and Raghad's family are continuously fleeing from one displacement to the next. These are incredibly difficult conditions to live under; this family can't wait any longer. They urgently need the safety and stability that evacuation alone can provide.
This fundraiser has a very attainable goal of $25,000 CAD, and is just over halfway completed; let's get them over the finish line and out of harm's way. Donate and share now to get Raghad's family to safety.
This fundraiser was sent to me by one of Raghad's friends-of-friends, and I'm confident in its legitimacy and urgency. Feel free to DM me if you would like to get in touch with the family friend. More details in the GFM.
