Familiar Wife is such a trip because episode 1 is like "look at this poor man. look at how he suffers with this crazy, awful wife of his. pity him." and then episode 2 flips that on its head and it's like "look at this irresponsible man. look how he's driven his wife to the brink of madness with his childishness and emotional immaturity. yes his wife does some crazy things but the truth is he's just as bad as she is (just in a different way), and she's suffering just as much as he is."

I still can't get over how perfect Time In A Bottle was for the E7 credits. How perfectly it fits with Lilia. The whole theme of time -- wanting to save time, to bottle it up, to control it and make sense of it, while knowing all the while that it's impossible. There never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them, because she only realized that she needed her coven and that her life and gift had a meaning beyond running away from death as she was nearing her own end. If I had a box just for wishes and dreams that had never come true, the box would be empty except for the memory of how they were answered by you, because by the end she has no regrets anymore; she has made peace with the death of her first coven, and has found acceptance and community in her new coven. I've looked around enough to know that you're the one I want to go through time with -- she spends the last few hours of her life going through time with and for her coven, in a way the only characters can barely fathom, and I'm 300% sure the clues she gave them are going to save them in the end. How quiet and gentle and wistful the song is, and how quiet and gentle and wistful Lilia's final understanding of her life and her death is. How she falls softly into death's embrace, almost as if she's floating, and she begins again from the first step. If words could make wishes come true, I'd save every day like a treasure, and then again I would spend them with you. I do not have the proper words to convey how all this makes me feel but the more I think about it the harder I sob. Lilia Calderu you will always be in my heart

Something I really love about The Smitten is how despite the fact that he's all talk about true love and genuine adoration he's... not at all about that. From his perspective, he's the dashing, dreamy heroic knight whose one mission is to rescue beautiful, pure, fair damsels in distress. To him, the princess isn't a person with her own personality and dreams and agency. She's an object he views as a trophy wife, a defenseless woman in need of saving, an idealised entity he can project his fantasies on.

And his route-- The Damsel route-- is such a good example of that. This route is the one route (that I know of) where the Princess is practically a blank slate. Where Thorn desperately craved connection, Adversary was itching for mutual rivalry and violence, Prisoner patiently waited for her freedom and Razour just joyfully chased the enjoyment of cutting us into pieces, the Damsel doesn't have anything to her outside of us. She's a helpless, obedient maiden whose only wants are what we want. She wants to destroy the world or she doesn't want to destroy the world or she doesn't care about the world depending on how we feel. This whole charade, no matter how much we want it to, is not about her. It's about us. Because she only exists as a contruction of our own wants. She isn't a person. She's an ideal. A blank canvas. Something to mold into whatever we want.

And that sense of security we felt, the trust we had in her and the image of the perfectly normal, genuinely innocent and real princess we met and fell in love with before the beginning of this route withered away and seeds of skeptisim were planted in its stead. And when we continued to press and push and question for her own desires or aspirations the illusion finally breaks, leaving us with the realisation that we never knew her at all. Because there was never anything to her from the start anyway.

Complaining abt Suicide Squad yet again but the fact that they have Waller exposing the alien community to space racist attacks and talking abt how she got to her position through deceit and being a terrible person and stuff is just. Ahsfiwueh JUST SAY YOU DONT KNOW WALLER.

Anyways literally the 3rd mission of the Squad ever (and the first framed as smth Waller picked and not orders from above) was the Squad discrediting and stopping a rogue vigilante who was only arresting POC and funneling white people into white supremacy groups (of which he was the most prominent member) in SUICIDE SQUAD #4. and it's explicitly framed as this mission being personal for Waller that she's hiding from the government bc its illegal like. Guys. Please why are we having her incite (space bc comics) racist attacks now

Also the whole "Amanda got her position through deceit and being a terrible person" NO. she KEPT her position through being shitty and playing complicated political games!!! She wasn't always that way like there is a difference and it is IMPORTANT ppl PLEASEEEE. In Secret Origins #14 we learn Amanda's backstory and she used to be a normal, caring person! Like even after she entered into working in government and politics she wasn't automatically morally bankrupt like please people. She was originally given control of the Squad by Reagan (*sigh* 80s comics...) to distract and get rid of her because she was so successful at pushing progressive social policy in Congress. Acting like she's this static pillar of evil is such a waste of her character and so fucking uninteresting and disrespectful to her arc it drives me MAD.

Like I am NOT saying Waller is all sunshine and rainbows, she fucking SUCKS (said w love <3) but like there's a human being there. It's a progression, she has a character arc like please, DC, please!!! They've fucked up Waller so bad and made her so opaque and uninteresting she can't even be the protagonist of her own story for fucks sake!

Like I don't know how many times I have to scream it until DC hears me or remembers but WALLER IS THE MAIN CHARACTER OF SUICIDE SQUAD. ITS HER BOOK. yet right now she's a cutout to be used as the villain wherever the writers please. Even in her book we get none of her perspective really displayed, no exploration of her thoughts with any kind of understanding of the role she traditionally has played and was made to play in the story.

Finished the pristine cut and I now have so many existential questions since I’ve finished. Spoilers below:

The voices using TLQ’s body without him in the princess & the dragon route as well as the cage route certainly was something. Like I know they could choose to do stuff for/in spite of him before, but the idea that they can be 100% fully functional in his body without him is existentially terrifying. That goes for the shadow of the smitten being outside of TLQ’s body and sticking around in the happily ever after chapter too. The idea of them being fully autonomous beings residing in the same space as the main character is…a lot. It kinda makes their deaths/disappearances sadder to me.

It does make me have more questions about the voices though. Like the spectre says that they’re shattered pieces of glass in TLQ’s mind/being. I always assumed that they all functioned together because the presence of TLQ held them together but the new routes are showing that’s not necessarily the case? But they’re still a part of him though, right? Especially given the shifting mound’s line of “this vessel is full of you”? I assume that the presence of TLQ makes things much more organized and without him it’s less like a broken mirror on the floor and more like scattered pieces of glass floating all over the place. Especially given their indecision and struggles in the Princess & Dragon chapter. I guess their presence never struck me as that weird because I always viewed them as an extension of the MC. I know initally when the story started drawing attention to the voices as being not natural it kinda shocked me at first because I had just assumed that the voices were just slightly different versions of the main character’s inner monologue, but not so!

Also, I have to ask, the Narrator being like “oh you’re new” when TLQ returns to his body in the princess & the dragon route, isn’t TLQ…y’know, kinda essential to the Narrator’s whole plan? Wouldn’t the Narrator notice his absence up front because the princess & TLQ being together goes against his whole plan? Or did he not want to think about it/denied it when it was brought up because that meant he failed? Eh, it’s probably the second one. It does make me wonder why exactly he wouldn’t be freaking out though given that all the other times the princess and TLQ become some form of the same being he’s been like “noooo, you can’t, it ruins my plan” (without saying that explicitly of course). Do the physical bodies being bonded in some way pose more of a threat than just the psychological states/being? I’m curious about that because the story seems to establish that TLQ & the shifting mound are not just their physical forms and can exist without physicality if they so desire. Was it different because TLQ was a part of the princess’s physical form but his own physical body still existed? Did the narrator just not have any way to be able to tell? It’s interesting to think about.

As far as I know Steam accepts both .png and .jpeg formats (there's ways to get gifs to work as well, but that gets a bit technical so it might be best to look at a guide for that)
