Billy Quizboy as the rabbit-toothed guitarist DAVE HILL of glam rock band SLADE— sporter of the worst bangs in rock n' roll history*— circa their 1973 Christmas #2 Merry Christmas Everybody**, which was covered as the annual Venture Bros holiday song this year by Pete White, Master Billy Quizboy, his mom and her lovers (the elderly superhero polycule).
→ hear the cover on KenPlume's youtube → go to the Billy Quizboy & Pete White index
(I know with the orange hair/eyepatch he looks like Ziggy Stardust— the Quizboy:Slade ratio is a delicate balance.)
Merriest Twelfth Day of Christmas to you, to Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer and to Slade and anyone else still reading who gives a shit.
youtube
Slade is more of a British thing, really. They had a ton of British hits in the 1970s as a glam rock band, but didn't break into the US until the 1980s (when they replaced Ozzy Osborne at the Reading Festival) with Cum on Feel the Noize, pivoting to be more hard rock/metal.
Noddy Holder was more of the “face” of Slade (head to toe plaid, mutton chops, tophat covered in mirrors). I suspect the all-plaid outfit on Col. Gentleman in the Vbros cover art is a take on Noddy's look... or he ignored the brief and dressed as one of Scotland's own Bay City Rollers. Slade suffered from a lesser case of Cheap Trick syndrome, where every member dressed like they were in a different band. Dave dressed full spaceman-- face glitter, every variety of metallic fabric available (lurex, glitter knit, vinyl, lamé) in shades of silver. The other guitarist whose name I won't look up wore a red lurex suit (I guess that would be Pete's outfit in their cover band) which he had to keep replacing because he sweated so much on stage the fibers literally melted (one of the suits was preserved by the V&A on an episode of Secrets of the Museum)... No one cares about the drummer.
The only reason I know anything about Slade — I'm no rock trivia geek, I’m a comedy nerd — Slade was a constant punchline in 1990s Brit Comedy. Noddy appeared on Never Mind the Buzzcocks in the LaMar era. 1993 sketch show The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer had a recurring mini-sitcom “Slade in Residence” (the band living in a suburban home together, wearing their stage costumes, eating nothing but cup-of-soup, obsessing over monster truck rallies and— the key to their appeal to Vic and Bob, I imagine— whining in thick Black Country accents.)
Billy is my Covid muse and if he stars in the annual Christmas cover (he had only sung before on 2006's VentureAid; read poems on their take on the Beatles Fan Club records), it's not like I CAN'T draw something despite saying I was done with this shit. I promised you guys a *technically* Christmas Billy drawing and I *technically* delivered.
Now I'm gonna switch to drawing characters I own so I can finally make some money. Godblessuseveryone. ___
*Dave Hill was just being a futuristic spaceman, those micro-bangs were the hottness on all the skater girls of the late 1990s. I even had 'em.
**Having the #1 song at Christmas is a big deal in the UK (as you may remember from the Bill Nighy segments from Love Actually) and the 1973 slug match between Slade's Merry Christmas Everybody and the eventual winner Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday looms large in music trivia, to the degree that I was sure Astrobot Go was going to release a cover a day later of some other (more fan-favored) characters doing their version of Wizzard to rain on Billy et. al’s parade.
→ Wizzard
youtube
So which character dons the beard and harlequin eye facepaint to be the guy from Wizzard? Probably Hank, right?
→ go to the Billy Quizboy & Pete White index → Nobody'sSweetheart on Instagram

Today's compilation:
Monsters of Rock 1998 Hair Metal / Hard Rock / Arena Rock /Heavy Metal / Pop-Metal
Good lord, this had to have been one of the most heavily advertised albums of all time, man. I don't know how much ad money the Razor & Tie label shelled out for all of their 'As Seen on TV' comps back in the day, but the commercials for Monsters of Rock and Monster Ballads were fucking inescapable throughout the late 90s and early 2000s, especially. Like, you'd be watching something on cable, and the commercial for this album would come on, so then you'd change the channel, and the same commercial would be playing on there too! And then you'd just force yourself to sit through it, and eventually, through repetition, the entire sequence of little song snippets that gets played throughout the ad would become a permanently etched medley inside of your goddamn mind, destined to haunt your soul for the rest of eternity:
🎶Cum on feel the noize, girls rock ya boys…my, my, my, I'm once bitten, twice shy, babe…poison!…*synths from Europe's "The Final Countdown"*…round and round, what comes around goes around, I'll tell you why…she's my cherry pie, cool drink of water, such a sweet surprise…we're not gonna take it, no! we ain't gonna take it…she's only seventeen, seventeen…here I go again on my own…I'm no fool, nobody's fool, nobody's fool…so hold on loosely…🎶
youtube
Now, the hair metal era may have been the dumbest and most ridiculous period of mainstream rock that we've ever borne witness to—and it's very difficult for me to think of another commercially successful subgenre in which rank stupidity has been such an inherently defining trait—but thanks to a combination of my own nostalgia for these damn Razor & Tie ads and my sometimes weird and ironic affinity for bad shit, after listening to this album, there is really nothing more that I want to do than hitch a ride back to 1990 so I can live out a super corny fantasy as a badass suburban high school senior who cruises through town in a boxy, red sedan with the windows down as these silly songs blare out of my speakers 😎.
But like I said, I am also under no illusion here; I'm fully cognizant of just how patently absurd so much of this music was. And when it comes to the pinnacle of pure trash, I really don't think anything ever quite managed to top Warrant's signature 1990 anthem, "Cherry Pie," which is obviously on this album. Like, have you heard or thought about this tune recently? It really might be the single-dumbest song that's ever been recorded in human history. And as the single-dumbest song that's ever been recorded in human history, it has thankfully and, I guess quite fittingly, been memorialized in some way, since…*checks notes*…you can currently go see the pizza box that its lyrics were originally transcribed on at the Hard Rock Cafe in Destin, Florida… 😭.
🎶I scream, you scream, we all scream for her Don't even try, 'cuz you can't ignore her!🎶
Also, Winger's "Seventeen." Yikes; you can probably guess what that one's about! Talk about songs that haven't aged well at all 😩:
🎶She's only seventeen (seventeen) Daddy says she's too young, but she's old enough for me🎶
Yeah… This one's catchy and all, but, um…no. 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎 Really glad we've finally realized as a society that, at the very least, fully-grown adults singing lustily about minors is a very unacceptable thing to do. I mean, it took way too long for us to get here, but at least we've finally made it to this point, right? And I think "Cherry Pie" is probably about a minor too, by the way, but that's also up for debate 😑.
To be clear, though, not every song on this album is embarrassingly dumb and/or skeevy hair metal. I happen to think Living Colour's alt metal classic, "Cult of Personality," is a genuinely great banger. And I also dig the southern rock smoothness of a song like .38 Special's "Hold On Loosely" too; but most of the rest of these are just pure dunderheaded hair metal classics, and a key, overarching feature of this stuff was just how fucking maximally mindless it all was. It's hard to put a finger on what exactly allowed this madness to spread so widely and flourish for nearly a whole-ass decade in the first place, but thank goodness grunge came along when it did and dethroned this stuff from its perch as rock music's top subgenre in the early 90s, because, seriously, this shit was so excessive and outrageous.
All that being said though, and as good and necessary as grunge was back then, I can't help but imagine what a kick-ass time it would probably be to have almost any one of these Monsters of Rock songs come on at the bar while you and everyone else around you are in a highly intoxicated stupor; like, "Black Hole Sun," "Man in the Box," "Interstate Love Song," "Even Flow," etc., might be total jams in and of themselves, but songs like those are probably not gonna do the same trick as something like Alice Cooper's "Poison" can in that type of situation. I mean, when you're fully committed to annihilating some brain cells, it's good to have music that's way ahead of you in order to accompany your experience, right? 😅
Highlights:
Quiet Riot - "Cum On Feel the Noize" Great White - "Once Bitten Twice Shy" Alice Cooper - "Poison" Europe - "The Final Countdown" Ratt - "Round and Round" Warrant - "Cherry Pie" Whitesnake - "Here I Go Again" Winger - "Seventeen" Living Colour - "Cult of Personality" Twisted Sister - "We're Not Gonna Take It" Judas Priest - "You've Got Another Thing Coming" Cinderella - "Nobody's Fool" .38 Special - "Hold On Loosely" Autograph - "Turn Up the Radio"

do u still do sotw posts? i'm just genuinely curious is all. i didn't see one pinned to your blog and i thought my tumblr app glitched out. your blog helps me find new tunes (haha) and your life updates r fun
Thanks for asking, anon! It means a lot to me that people like those posts because I love doing them.
To answer your question, I did not do one last week but I may have one for you on Sunday. Still not sure yet, I have a lot to get done for the next 2-ish weeks. I do almost all of my picking the night before because I base it on the music I listened to that week and I don’t want to miss something that hits me unexpectedly, but I think I have something in mind.
If you’re curious about my habits as of late, I’ve just been listening to a shit ton of Suburban Noize (I personally recommend Mower if you’re into hardcore rap punk, or their alter-ego Slower if you’re more into lounge jazz) and Psychopathic Records (mainly Twiztid but they’re not signed to them anymore so does that count? who cares I’m still sad about it) acts and anything adjacent, plus a bunch of tracks off of Follow the Leader, The Green Book, Korn (the album) Significant Other, Abominationz (Madrox), and Gold Cobra. Too many good tracks between them all. Also been enjoying some less popular (as far as Tumblr is concerned) nu metal acts like Element Eighty, Dry Kill Logic, American Head Charge, Methods of Mayhem (I swear to god, they have good songs), Genuflect (they’re like a fully nu metal RATM), and Quarashi (they’re Icelandic RATM!).
As for a life update I’ve been struggling BUT, my head is a bit clearer at the moment. I went out last night and it was a nice distraction, and y’all have had some real kind words that have helped.
#sorry for going off I’ve been doing a lot of driving which means a lot of listening to music#not so much downtime though to make posts#sorry y’all#er…singular person#are-we-really-doing-this SOTW#feel free to yell at me in the tags about my terrible taste

RSD 2024 HIGHLIGHT: Unwritten Law - Blue Room (long before Scotty Mac was in the band...) on vinyl for the very first time!
Blue Room is the debut album from the San Diego-based pop punk band Unwritten Law, originally released in 1994. It was the band's first full-length album and would help establish their presence in the prolific San Diego music scene of the early 1990s. 30 years later, Suburban Noize Records is releasing it on navy blue vinyl for Record Store Day 2024.
We'll have just 8 copies available for sale from 9am tomorrow morning (we ordered more but our stock got cut down, bummer!). $65 each. No holds or preorders.

August 2019 Album of the Month: DGAF PRESENTS: Chucky Chuck “Henchlord”
Review By Chad Thomas Carsten
Located near the Southern California there appears to be a crypt that's only capable of being discovered/seen when a full moon is shining upon it. It contains the bodies of wack emcees piled away in a massive sized casket underneath a single tombstone. The carved words on the front of it showcased the words "Here Lies Wack Emcees 2000-2019"; all corpses of the emcees still gripping on a mic with the abbreviation “DGAF” slashed across their chests, still dripping blood. Down the road from the crypt is a local haunted concert venue. It smells of Marijuana bong rips meshed with a hint of the smells from wild parties. Inside lives an emcee who is awaiting to continue establishing career. He's kneeling down on pieces of broken glass and spray painted concrete, wearing a unique pair of headphones only used during harsh studio sessions, with albums of faux rappers smashed all around him while holding tightly to a rusted hack saw that's dripping fresh blood of the many emcees who tried to snatch away the mic from this underground legend. Chucky Chuck is his name and he's here to take hip-hop back to the darkness to abolish bubble gum hip-hop for good! And that's why Chucky Chuck's latest LP Henchlord was recorded in the first place, simply to jump back within the underground hip-hop scene and destroy weak ass stale hip-hop.
Henchlord's main presentation is fully aimed at Chucky Chuck showing off his emcee skills to prove he's one of the top ten best California emcees to dive into the abyss of the dark side of hip-hop. All of Chucky Chuck's bars contained within this mafia rap delight penetrate each beat of the thirteen songs featured on "Henchlord" like The Joker finally taking out Bruce Wayne during the witching hour. This is the DGAF King at his best, even delivering stunning lyrical status flow that will cause faux emcees to weep in shame. The title track "Henchlord" showcases his love of Marijuana and hustling the streets, while the track "Rat Race" dips into punk rock political territory and proves that Chucky Chuck can conquer any beat presented to him no matter how grimy!
Overall, DFAG fans will be beyond thrilled with Henchlord because Chucky Chuck is still beyond strong on the mic after slaughtering beats for over twenty years. It's down-right impressive that Chuck is still capable of staying original, and pretty much body any new up-comer rapper around the globe! Other Major Hustlelord Highlights: "L.A.M.E.", "Get High", "Fake People", & "Khakis and Dirtbikes featuring L Savage & Grimace Santana"

The music video for the song plays like a cinematic homage to Breaking Bad, with the singer wrestling with a bad trip and burying himself - or his former self - in a shallow desert grave. The song now has surpassed one million streams on Spotify, as more and more fans are converted by The Kaleidoscope Kid’s genre-blending artistry. The program is fairly easy to use and has some nice features. His first single under his new label deal with Suburban Noize was “Hold Up”, which continues to gain momentum with his edgy vocals and idiosyncratic flows. Staff PhotoEchoes allows users to turn their images into a kaleidoscope-style presentation or screensaver. This positive new chapter in his career brings Kaleidoscope into the deeper pools of the music scene, which is sure to expand his discography as well as his fan base. Kaleidoscope recently signed to indie powerhouse label Suburban Noize Records and is working alongside the label to create his debut album, developing and fine-tuning his musicianship for his broadened audience. Thankfully, as we all know, there are some rules that are begging to be broken. Kaleidoscope’s voice is sure to resonate with many and inspire a new trajectory of music-making that breaks the customary rules of genre. Taking pieces of his life and translating them into his sound has helped Kaleidoscope create an ethereal world that’s equal parts relatable and entrancing. A fan of an extensive catalog of inspirations that span from Beck, Pink Floyd, to Bob Marley and Sublime- his work is a reflection of intentionality and passion for the craft. The diversity of his activities and surroundings translated into a varied love for music, bringing about a sonic landscape in his work that echoes his passions and interests.Īlthough a true newcomer to the music scene, Kaleidoscope’s discography leaps and bounds between spaces, leaning on his charisma to bring the listener along for the ride. The Kaleidoscope Kid is a Phoenix, Arizona native that grew up on skateboarding, visual art, and outdoor escapism. Bring the glass into the right light and the picture strikes you in a whole different way than before. The magic of a kaleidoscope is its constantly changing colors, shapes, and impressions. But just as Daedalus warned Icarus…don’t fly too close to the sun.” Songs written in a journal manifest themselves into reality like ripping out pages in my notebook and folding it into a paper plane – How far can these stories take you? As high as you want to go. “Fight or Flight is the alchemical process of turning your dreams into reality while battling with the potential of failure. ALBUM REVIEW: (HED) P.E. – Class of 2020 – Suburban Noize Records
(HED) P.E. releases a solidly decent album with Class of 2020 (Suburban Noize Records). The band, hailing from Southern California, truly embodies the eclectic skater vibe of the area. The album is a mix of rock, funk, and rap. Jared Gomes, Jeremiah Stratton, Kurt Blankenship, DJ Blackard, and Chad Benekos are a tight outfit, and Class of 2020 has no wasted riffage.
