ALBUM REVIEW: (HED) P.E. – Class of 2020 - Suburban Noize Records
ALBUM REVIEW: (HED) P.E. – Class of 2020 – Suburban Noize Records
(HED) P.E. releases a solidly decent album with Class of 2020 (Suburban Noize Records). The band, hailing from Southern California, truly embodies the eclectic skater vibe of the area. The album is a mix of rock, funk, and rap. Jared Gomes, Jeremiah Stratton, Kurt Blankenship, DJ Blackard, and Chad Benekos are a tight outfit, and Class of 2020 has no wasted riffage.

So BJU runs the BJU General Alumni group on Facebook. Talking in there is like talking in the Snack Shop or what they call "The Den" now. Sure, there's a semblance of "liberty," but let's not kid ourselves, friends.
The latest thing they are trying to do is utterly juvenile. I'm not the only one who thinks so. But the local celebrity and Friend of the Archive, Jeremiah Dew, and former BJU faculty member, Holly Stratton, are conducting an alumni podcast to keep the alumni connected to their alma mater. But they are trying to peddle the idea that BJU's "dating" life is well . . . quaint and charming. The latest weirdest -- which many WutBJU readers have written in to alert me -- is that two members of the Class of 2021 called Jeremiah Dew ON THEIR HONEYMOON!?!!?!
Seriously. Look.
Grant and Alexandra (Sigmon) Proctor, a pair of 2021 grads, answered JDew's phone call while on their honeymoon! Our co-hosts Holly and JDew catch up with the "youngest" (at the time of this recording) BJU Alumni married couple while they sit on the beach in Cancun. Grant also tells a great story about how paranoid he was when Alexandra didn't show up at the altar on their wedding day!
Do you have an interesting story about dating your future spouse at BJU? Send an email to [email protected] and JDew will be in touch!
So if you'd like to be a public part of this BJU strangeness, email Jeremiah today!

From biblical times to Trump, false messiahs have doomed societies
Surrounded by military cadets, U.S. President Donald Trump watches the primary half of the 121st Military-Navy Soccer Recreation at america Navy Academy in New York Metropolis on Dec. 12, 2020. (Shutterstock)
The prophet Jeremiah data in excruciating element the catastrophic occasions resulting in the destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar in 587 BCE.
Jeremiah describes the devastating famine, escalating sense of concern and ominous foreboding that permeated the town regardless of optimistic oracles issued within the royal court docket by prophets, who promised divine intercession. Jeremiah warned his listeners to not be deceived by false hopes primarily based on the assumption that God would shield his sacred temple and the town during which it stood: “Don’t belief in these misleading phrases: ‘that is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’”
The folks of Jerusalem disregarded Jeremiah’s recommendation and threw him right into a effectively, threatening even to kill him as a result of his doom-saying weakened morale within the besieged metropolis. But, it’s Jeremiah’s oracles that the Bible preserves as a result of he was appropriate: the town was violently destroyed and a lot of the Judeans both died or have been exiled to Babylonia, leaving solely a remnant of peasants behind to work the land. This introduced the biblical kingdom of Judah to an finish.
Historical past teaches that messianic hopes result in poor outcomes for the societies that embrace them. But, they proceed to floor — even in the present day, with the elevation of Donald Trump by some to messiah-like standing.
‘Distruzione del tempio di Gerusalemme (Destruction of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem),’ by Italian painter Francesco Hayez (1867) (Gallerie dell’Accademia)
Divine intervention and predictive failures
The Babylonian conquest is only one instance of false hopes for divine intercession resulting in ill-fated riot and catastrophic defeat. Within the 12 months 70 CE, Jerusalem once more discovered itself besieged by a regional superpower demanding political submission.
Josephus, a Jewish historian who survived the struggle, writes an eye-witness account of the occasions that led to the second cataclysmic destruction of Jerusalem. He stories that, resulting in the Jewish revolt in 66 CE, quite a few bandits fomented riot in opposition to Rome in ways in which counsel that they had messianic pretensions: one false prophet gathered mobs within the wilderness and led them to the Mount of Olives, promising to breach the town partitions.
Extra poignantly, Josephus narrates the ultimate hours of the Jerusalem temple earlier than it was burned to the bottom, when 1000’s of frequent folks, together with ladies and youngsters, gathered within the temple cloisters as a result of a prophet had predicted that God would ship them from there. In language choked with emotion, Josephus describes the silly waste of life that day as a result of false hopes in divine intercession.
Sixty-five years later, one other disastrous riot in opposition to Rome culminated in brutal conquest, loss of life and slavery for tons of of 1000’s of Judeans — resulting in the disintegration of Jewish society in Judea for over a century. This failed revolt by a person with messianic pretensions, dubbed “Son-of-a-Star” (Bar Kokhba), resulted in political domination by overseas rulers and the dispersion of the Judean inhabitants into overseas lands till the fashionable period.
Christian messianism has an equally lengthy monitor document of failed apocalyptic predictions and false prophecies, showing already within the New Testomony: the Gospel of Mark 9:1 and Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians 7:29-31 each anticipate that Jesus will return inside their lifetimes to determine the dominion of God.
The failure of this occasion and efforts to justify and clarify it finally led to the founding of a brand new faith: Christianity.
Trump the saviour
Most not too long ago, messianic expectations have connected to the determine of Trump, whom a big proportion of white evangelicals herald as a political saviour. A lot of them draw a hyperlink between Isaiah 45, which describes the Persian king Cyrus the Nice as God’s anointed, and the truth that Trump is the 45th president of america; this numerical coincidence is considered as proof for divine windfall.
Even Trump’s ethical failings have been assimilated to his messianic id: Jerry Falwell Jr. compares Trump to King David, who dedicated adultery, employed a hitman and repented to God following the loss of life of his son who was conceived by this illicit sexual union.
If evangelicals regard Trump as their saviour and the one who will rectify the ethical and political imbalance they understand is afflicting American society, the QAnon motion has taken this doctrine of salvation to the following stage: Exploiting human emotion and concern for kids, the motion posits a world little one sex-trafficking ring run by excessive stage Democrats and the Hollywood elite.
QAnon followers consider that this legal community controls the U.S. authorities — menacingly labelled “the Deep State” — and operates with impunity throughout the globe.
Their conspiratorial mythology centres on Trump, who’s acclaimed because the tireless chief, preventing to destroy this evil cabal. QAnon believers anticipate an imminent revelation of the reality, known as the Nice Awakening, and predict an impending apocalypse cryptically known as “the Present.”
Learn extra: The Church of QAnon: Will conspiracy theories kind the idea of a brand new spiritual motion?
Trump’s claims to be the “chosen one” and his frequent references to the Deep State explicitly gasoline messianic hypothesis centred on his presidency.
Trump campaigning in late October after testing optimistic for coronavirus. (Shutterstock)
Trump’s relentless (albeit futile) makes an attempt to overturn the outcomes of the 2020 U.S. election by unsubstantiated claims that mail-in voting was riddled with fraud exploits the credulity and timeless religion of his supporters; they overwhelmingly settle for his narrative and have taken to the streets to help his trigger.
Trump’s narcissistic undermining of democratic rules, abetted by messianic mythologies and ill-fated expectations for divine intercession, threatens to unravel American society in civil violence and mistrust.
Trumpism has all of the hallmarks of earlier messianic actions: in subordinating actuality to mythology, they failed and within the course of destroyed the societies they aspired to avoid wasting.

US FEARS THAT HANOI IS BRAINWASHING AMERICAN P.O.W.’S
Neil Sheehan, The New York Times, 4 April 1967
The State Department expressed concern today that North Vietnam might be brainwashing American prisoners to obtain propaganda statements attacking United States policy.
Robert J. McCloskey, the State Department spokesman, cited an account in the current issue of Life magazine of a captured American pilot’s appearance before foreign newsmen in Hanoi,
The department, Mr. McCloskey said, is “concerned at recent indications that North Vietnam may be using mental or physical pressure on American prisoners of war to obtain confessions or statements critical of United States policy in Vietnam.”
The article in Life, by Lee Lockwood, a freelance American photographer who visited North Vietnam for four weeks, describes the exhibition in Hanoi on March 6 of Lieut. Comdr. Richard A. Stratton, a Navy pilot who was shot down in North Vietnam in January.
‘Repeated’ Hanoi Assurances The article said the Navy man “looked straight ahead, but he wasn’t really looking—his eyes never seemed to focus—he just wasn’t there.” He was “like a robot,” Mr. Lockwood wrote, adding: “When they said something to him, he acted; if they said nothing, he did nothing.”
North Vietnam, Mr. McCloskey said, “has given repeated assurances that it treats prisoners humanely.”
“However,” he said, “it has refused to permit the International Committee of the Red Cross or any other neutral observers to visit the prisoners, which is required by the Geneva conventions.
“In the absence of such independent verifications, North Vietnam’s professions of human treatment cannot be accepted.”
U.S. Plea to Red Cross Mr. McCloskey contended that the United States and South Vietnam were treating North Vietnamese soldiers captured in the fighting in the South in accordance with the regulations of the 1949 Geneva convention on prisoners of war. Representatives of the International Committee, he said, frequently visit prison camps.
In recent weeks, Mr. McCloskey said, the United States has asked the International Committee, which sits in Geneva, to express American concern to the North Vietnamese authorities over indications that prisoners are being subjected to brainwashing techniques.
Washington has also called on the International Committee to ask North Vietnam again to allow the Red Cross or some neutral power to inspect prison camps and to give the prisoners mail and parcels containing medicine and food. Such actions are provided in the Geneva convention. No response has been received.
According, to Mr. Lockwood, Commander Stratton, dressed in striped prison pajamas and sandals, read a five-page “confession" over a microphone from behind a curtain while foreign newsmen listened. Copies of the statement were given to the newsmen.
Mr, McCloskey noted that a Japanese television film shown in this country in mid-March confirmed Mr. Lockwood’s account of Commander Stratton’s demeanor in response to commands.
There are now about 380 American prisoners in North Vietnam. Definitive figures cannot be obtained because the North Vietnamese refuse to provide the Red Cross with lists.
Of the total 128 have been confirmed by one means or another as being in North Vietnamese captivity. Four are marines, 63 are Air Force men and 61 are Navy personnel. Fifty other men. all of the Air Force, are believed to have been captured and 204 men are listed as missing in action and possibly captured.
State Department officials said there had been a number of other indications besides the account in Life that American prisoners were being subjected to brainwashing.
In May 1966, they said, Comdr. Jeremiah A. Denton Jr., a Navy pilot, was exhibited before Japanese television cameramen in Hanoi. Commander Denton confessed to crimes “in the manner of a man who was not himself any more,” the officials said, and made statements critical of American policy,
Some Appeared Normal Since then propaganda statements attributed to 20 other prisoners have been read over the Hanoi radio or distributed through Communist press media. In the statements, all marked by stilted language, the prisoners confessed to war crimes and denounced the United States’ involvement in Vietnam,
Last July a number of American prisoners were paraded through the streets of Hanoi.
Officials also note that on the dozen or so occasions when the North Vietnamese have allowed Communist or left-wing journalists to interview prisoners, the captured Americans acted reasonably normally, did not make propaganda statements and praised their captors.
No foreigners have been allowed to interview prisoners in their camps.
Officials believe that the North Vietnamese are treating normally a small number of prisoners whose will they feel they cannot break while subjecting the majority to brainwashing tactics.
Last summer North Vietnamese officials announced plans to try American fliers as war criminals. Later President Ho Chi Minh said no trials would take place.

THREE CHEERS! to Dani's cousin Stephanie Glunt-Westfall and her Husband Jeremiah Westfall !!! We needed a Lawn Mower real bad and they rounded one up for us. Dani and Allie picked it up on the way home from the Renn Faire up their way back last night. And it was in pretty good shape. It did need a little TLC and I had to Tony Stark it a little. But you know what the price was right and I just finished mowing the front and back yards. So how about that? You know today would have been my Father's 71st Birthday. And this mower has a real nice little Briggs and Stratton engine on it. Which was the first type of engine my Father ever taught me to work on... that's where I learned the concepts and workings of low-powered internal combustion engines. So that little bit of know how worked out real nice today. :) It was fun working on (which really wasn't that much) and reminded me of some pretty fun times with my Father. So real nice day today. Thanks again Stephanie and Jeremiah you guys rock!

(Hed) P.E. - Stampede
(Hed) P.E. – Stampede
Evolution is inevitable, resisting it is futile. I have witnessed oodles of bands that have resisted letting their music evolve, getting themselves trapped in a murky impenetrable bubble of monotony and dismal record sales. (Hed) P.E.is not one of those bands. If anything, (Hed) P.E. could be the official spokesmodel for bands who embrace the natural evolution of their music. The latest studio…

American Head Charge Liv Sin In Death Reptil Mastiff (Scunthorpe Only)
Club Academy – Manchester, 13th September 2017
The Lincoln Imp – Scunthorpe, 16th September 2017 Review by Cat A All photos reproduced with permission from Steven Potter @ Scunthorpe Nights
Settle down Wyrd ones, it has been a while! Of course, I couldn’t make my first live review in years a simple one so this is an amalgamated review of the two shows I made it to in this Europe and UK run.
The cast of this tour is trans-oceanic, but first up in Scunthorpe at the Lincoln Imp were a local opener, Mastiff, who brought loud and dirty sludgy hardcore Metal to the early birds who lapped it up in anticipation of the feast to come. A good solid performance from the locals.
The first of the main lineup came from a little further afield. Hailing from Germany, Reptil at first glance of theatrical makeup and stage props including IV blood bags did not appear to be something that I would enjoy… and then they started playing. For a band with only one album on the discography Reptil are a refreshing blend of Metal genres with theatrics that could probably have done with slightly larger stages than were on offer on this tour (next time guys!), vocals with a wonderful range between growls and melodic that won over a skeptical crowd and gained more than a few fans, myself included (not least when our cries for tea were heeded in the Scunthorpe rain, thanks again, you absolute hero) of this cacophonic mix of beats that work so well together. Special bonus points go to Reptil for the first observed use of a dance floor and tap shoes for percussion.
The most miles award has to go to In Death, all the way from sunny Brisbane to the glorious UK autumnal weather. I have one word about In Death – brutal! From the off they filled the stage with energy and started the pits early on. Again, I wouldn’t normally go for anything classed as death metal with an illegible logo but there is a catchy groove that drags listeners into the music screaming and kicking. Thunderous percussion delivered with boundless, contagious energy. If you want clean vocals then you won’t find them here, but you will find beer kegs being used as instruments!
Liv Sin. If that sounds vaguely familiar and you can’t quite put your finger on it, think Sister Sin. In all honesty I hadn’t bothered to do my homework before these shows and with there being such a packed bill I expected to be quite impatient for the main event by the time Liv Sin appeared on the stage. I was so happy to be proven wrong for the third time of the night in Manchester, and in Scunthorpe I was waiting with anticipation of the set ahead. The years of stage experience were obvious and Liv herself was a powerful presence on stage, cheering on the crowd into a frenzy with horredously catchy metal anthems that got stuck in my head and have been appearing as random earworms since. This is real metalhead feel good music at its finest.
The main event. American Head Charge. I apologise to the other bands for not knowing their music but the headline was the reason for my presence. I will do better next time!
If you don’t know who American Head Charge are then please see here. Since that was written there have been some lineup changes, and some familiar names have returned to fill the gaps. Sadly Justin Fowler and Chad Hanks could not make it across the pond this time. See you next time guys. Taking over the guitar strings was old favourite Benji Helberg, Jeremiah “Trauma” Stratton of hed(PE) fame the beast behind the drum kit and Michael Dwyer handling the bass for the run through Europe and the UK.
There was real anticipation at both venues for the return of a band who were lumped in to the Nu-Metal label despite being far more Industrial leaning, and looking around there was a real sense of nostalgia from the crowd. These were the Nu-Metal kids of the late nineties and early noughties nearly two decades later who had to grow up, get jobs and the associated sensible haircut. That doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten how to mosh though. From the first industrial notes of Let All The World Believe, through the well loved classics of All Wrapped Up, Dirty and the source of their latest video (you can see it below) Drowning Under Everything the crowd went absolutely insane! I would comment further on the crowd behaviour but being wedged up against the barrier for both shows I didn’t get a good look.
Old songs and new, there were cheers and yells for every single one, and for a band who have had such a drastic change to the line up the playing tight and the chemistry between them evident in a high energy set that barely paused for breath. Of course Just So You Know brought the house(s) down, particularly at Scunthorpe where it was played as an encore and dedicated to the life of a regular at the venue who had recently passed away.
What else can I say? I wish instead of writing this I was down in Milton Keynes for round 3. On a personal and completely fangirl note they were emotional evenings, and I will not deny and am not ashamed of crying like a Wand Erection fan in the front row.
If you’ve made it this far I salute you. I have broken my voice and I would do it again in a flash. See you at the next AHC show? I’ll be down the front dancing like a dork.
