i sincerely believe that anyone who says "oh you can't cook with a microwave, you should only be cooking with the stove / toaster oven, everything you make in a microwave is gross" has never bothered to actually learn how to use the microwave for cooking.

“Lady Pent. Tell me about your childhood bedroom.” “It was the size of this sitting room, perhaps,” said Pent promptly. “Two beds with their heads against the far wall from the door. I liked to have my younger brother sleep in my room sometimes, when I was small. Primrose walls in paste-on flimsy, not wash—a pretty chroma of the Prince Undying, but a little cockeyed—a Vit-D panel in place of a window, with a repeated design on it. My grandfather’s arm bones over the door. A little reinforced table where I played at dolls or read, with a cubby beneath it where I was meant to crouch in case a zonal jet made it past the winnow. Phosphorescent stars painted on the ceiling, a peg on the wall for my gloves and robe. I haven’t thought of it in years. Why?” “Initial test,” said Harrowhark. “The flexibility of metaphysical solipsism aside, I have hardly any knowledge of the Fifth House and how its people live there. The more nonsensical your answer, the more likely you were to be a construction of my brain.”
There's just something terribly sad about the fact that what Harrow was so convinced would be utterly alien to her was...a sunshine coloured bedroom with glow in the dark stars on the ceiling where a little girl played dolls. An idea of childhood that Harrow, told she was a warcrime and raised as a penitent from almost infancy, never experienced.

tbh au where L just doesn't seem to zero in on light as kira at all and light is smug at first but then starts to get increasingly frustrated as L keeps taking swings and missing completely. gets kinda close and then announces the biggest suspect is sayu yagami. don't worry about the older one, he's just an ordinary boy. L never even makes contact. light's dropping signs and L is picking them up but completely misinterpreting them. light's like this guy's a fucking idiot lmfao?? i could get away with this forever. but then he gets bored with no one to play with and he's irritated that L keeps giving credit to every random idiot for being kira. light starts dropping more and more brazen clues trying to see if this stupid detective can take a hint and then L arrests him off the massive trail of evidence he's been leaving for months

I actually love that one of Travis's pieces of advice is to sometimes do or say the fucked up thing, or the really bad idea, even if it's a little bit contradictory to the character—because that's actually so much of why Travis's characters feel real and fleshed out!
People are inherently contradictory, they do things they don't mean or wouldn't normally do, so if you stick to your character type too tightly, your character doesn't feel like a real person making real choices.

I see a lot of discussion in the DR fandom on some characters that die early having "missed potential", and while I agree that definitely a few of them could have been written better or differently, part of me wonders if that missed potential is kind of the point? A character is shaping up to be something, so you get invested in their story, which then makes their early death all the more tragic. I mean, of course it's still a tough needle to thread to get it to land as tragic versus falling flat, and I'm not sure how closely some of these characters hit the mark. But I Do think some characters aren't actually "missed opportunities" and instead played their role in the plot how they were meant to, if maybe a little suboptimally.

Hi! I've been following your umineko thoughts, just out of curiosity, did you figure out what is going on with the number of people on the island from the end of chapter 6? (when they shoot Erika)
Hi!!! I was told that it required future information so I wouldn't be able to solve it immediately. Obviously there's some trick to it, but I'm not very smart in the way the game needs me to be smart...
My final theory was related to who "thought of themself as human" ie excluding Kanon because he's "furniture," which still hasn't been excluded from possibility I guess but I doubt is the real answer. A lot of the red truth in that situation blocks off theories, like stating that nobody would be mistaken for someone else, that "everyone else" is in the cousin room, etc. This is intentional, clearly, but yeah. It's weird.
As for the number of people specifically, the red truth also attempts to block out the possibility of someone unknown existing on the island, but allows for them to exist in the cousin room alone. Do I actually think there's another unknown person in Kanon's place in the cousin room? I... I mean I guess it's possible, but I don't see what the purpose of that would be, narrative wise. Regardless of if the detective proclamation was made, it IS weird storytelling to say that there's another person with no foreshadowing. Now, would the foreshadowing be in ep6 specifically? Not necessarily. So it's possible there was some clever hint left wayyy back where I can't remember it. And of course it would make the "number of people on the island" weird too since iirc they limited that number to 18 (excluding Kinzo, including Erika), which I'm assuming takes into account dead bodies, so unless the "Kanon doesn't see himself as human" thing is applied it doesn't work.
This is a longwinded way of saying "no, I did not," but thank you for asking anyways!!!

writing tumblr posts is easy because i can be as incoherent as i want and a certain number of people will probably like it anyway (<3) however writing emails makes me feel like i'll be hunted for sport if i phrase anything in a suboptimal way

I bet ART would like TTRPG actual plays. It likes watching media with Murderbot because Murderbot's emotional reactions help it contextualize the story, so imagine how interesting it would be for it to have the extra layer of getting the emotional reactions of the people who are creating the story as it goes, and using comparisons between in-character and above-table behavior to help broaden its understanding.

If believing in false things is so bad, you'd really expect the atheists to be winning a lot more Nobel Prizes. Like, look at the number of deeply religious people at the height of scientific progress. I'm not saying "some scientists are Christian." I'm saying even Einstein was religious and made scientific arguments based on his faith (famously, "god does not play dice with the universe").
Now take everything you know about Bayes rule, evidence, and so forth. Does science really support the conclusion "false beliefs will horribly corrupt your thinking process"?
Or is that just a false belief you cling to for other reasons?

I really want Ashton to level up their Intelligence next ASI. He's really earned it; they're keeping up with Milo on arcane weirdness and explaining the leyline problems to them and I am LIVING for it. It's phenomenal. Really out here brute-forcing his way into being one of the clever ones in the party, I'm so proud.
