Maps of Tenebrae by Pockymun

Tenebrae was such a beast. I thought Galahd was difficult; Tenebrae is so much bigger and has continental climates to deal with. Like last time, I nearly lost my mind trying to make sense of the climates, so I kind of gave up.

Most of the writing I've done for FFXV has skirted around Tenebrae, focusing moreso on its politics than the landmass itself. It's been in the background for the most part, largely because I didn't have a proper map to explore with! I copied it the best I could from reference images.

Tenebrae is not as cold as I initially assumed it was. It has a warm ocean current on its western side that brings much rain and warm winds that keep the northern reaches largely temperate. The eastern side of Tenebrae is hit with a cold ocean current, getting far less rain and winds. The fishing is better on the east coast. The southern half of Ulwaat was given a temperate rainforest climate based on what we saw of Tenebrae in Kingsglaive; it had that dark green flora of a rainforest.

I base a lot of my headcanons for Tenebrae off of Western Europe primarily, with a little bit from Northern Europe. The way I figured the latitude lines of Eos, Tenebrae is still well below the subartic circle (assuming Eos has one). It's climate is based upon Ireland, the UK, and Scotland, but those three have only two climates: oceanic and subpolar oceanic. I chose climate terms that best described the forests found in Tenebrae. Because Tenebrae is nothing but forests, mountains, and hills.

Tenebrae is the land of high altitudes and trees. What reference images we have of Tenebrae seemed to have a lot of peaks on it. In the glimpse of Tenebrae that we saw in the movie, there are large rock islands that just float above the rest of the land. While Galahdians have a knack for using magic, Tenebrae itself is a land of magic. These floating islands are unique to its mountains mostly, although a few clusters can exist separately.

Water also seems to be a theme for Tenebrae, with its northern cape, the southern sounds, and a few small bays all around. Where there are mountains, there are rivers running down to the ocean. I imagine there are natural springs all around the country, used as a natural remedy for several ailments.

I will dump my headcanons about Tenebrae below:

I've been talking with @groovytimetravelflower, who has the theory that Niflheim's airships are powered by stones or ores mined from the floating islands. It just makes perfect sense. Niflheim had several reasons to invade Tenebrae: to dominate the whole continent, to establish complete control over trade, and to get their hands on whatever magic exists in the land.

Much of the magic is not well-known nor understood beyond the floating islands. The forests of Tenebrae are old, especially in the north.

The only other country close enough for Tenebrae to trade with is Niflheim. Though Tenebrae has a couple ports of its own, these are not large enough for massive shipyards and international trade. Trading with Niflheim allows Tenebraen trade goods to go farther in the world. The downside is that Niflheim can control all trade that Tenebrae does, taking things for the Empire and blocking imports.

The country is very difficult to navigate because of the terrain. Roads are often winding and go around obstacles; this was done moreso out of the belief that the land could not be damaged by man-made endeavors. Trains have only been established in Ulwaat. There may be a few antique cars, but the most common mode of transportation on main roads are chocobo-drawn carriages, or riding chocobos.

Tenebrae is behind on technology overall: this is a result of Niflheim conquering them so long ago. Niflheim doesn't often invest in the lands they conquer. You can see this in how mainland Lucis has such outdated technology, which was left to languish once the Imperials seized control. Most high-technology Tenebrae is exposed to comes from the Imperial Army and is only used in their operations. Ulwaat is the most developed province. The railroad in Ulwaat was developed by the Empire to more easily transport the stone and ore they mined in the mountains.

The further away one gets from Fenestala, the less modern technology there is. In Morrith, Krahage, and Bruiral, indoor plumbing is a recent technological advancement. Not all places have it; it requires electricity, which is difficult to establish in Northern Tenebrae. Because Tenebrae is such a mystical place and the population is probably very religious because of the Oracle, not a lot of people mind being behind in technology.

Cellphones are unheard of, and you wouldn't get reception in most of Tenebrae anyway. Fenestala Manor probably has a couple TVs, but similarly, reception is terrible. Radio signals come through a little more clearer, mostly because the Imperial Army needs them to.

The architecture of the capital and towns of Tenebrae is Victorian and Edwardian, with art noveau used in Fenestala Manor. Villages typically are full of cottages of wood or stone and roofed with thatch. The typical fashion is also Victorian and Edwardian, although more of the youth have recently begun to wear the modern Western clothing imported from Niflheim. People further north of the Breksos Mountains dress in traditional Celtic and Norse garb.

The Breksos Mountain Range naturally divides Tenebrae into a North and a South. These regions do not strictly adhere to the cardinal directions; it is just what people have referred to it as. Travel through these mountains is especially difficult. There is one passage near Woudoord, but it becomes blocked by snow in the winter, completely isolating the north.

Queen Sylva frequently sent aid in the form of doctors, vaccines, and schoolteachers to Northern Tenebrae. She did a lot to improve the relations across the mountains, although the past few Oracles have never gone north of the mountains. All aid stopped with her death. The Northerners became even more apprehensive of Southerners as they appeared to submit to the Empire.

Northern Tenebrae is even further behind in technological advancements than Southern Tenebrae (ie the indoor plumbing). Northern Tenebrae is very isolated from the rest of the world, especially in the winter. It's rare for a Northerner to travel south, and vice versa. The South views the North as barbarous, and the North view the South as weak. Southerners are prim and proper; Northerners... are not. Both greatly revere the Oracle.

As I said before, Tenebraens are religious, largely in part to the Oracle's presence. Tenebrae has become known as a land of healers, with many practicing natural remedies. The people are generally modest and proper. Victorian and Edwardian social customs still run strong.

Tenebraens are seen as mysterious and exotic to the rest of the world. Niflheim hasn't allow Tenebraens to leave their country since they attacked Fenestala Manor, so it's very rare to see one in Lucis. The rest of the world doesn't really understand the difference between North and South Tenebraens. The differences become clear when putting one of each side by side and listening to the bickering.

In itself, a good movie I liked, I was surprised to love Zheng (is that how it's spelled ?) when I was sure I'd hate how she was shoehorned in the franchise but no she was touching and fun, the humor held up, even if she were not deep I liked the Chameleon (I guess a franchise does need at least one villain who hss no trauma and is jist evil because, she was still likable and charismatic and not exagerated), Mr Ping and Li Shan were amazing and hilarious together (you can't tell me they are not married at this point), I thought I would hate how the Furious Five were not there but they were given a satisfying explanation why that truly made it feel like Po's own journey this time and it felt like all was forgiven when they appear at the very end, Tai Lung was there and even if I was disappointed we were actually clickbaited and lied to (HE DOESN'T BECOME GOOD OR APPEAR MUCH !?!?! FUCK YOU !!!!!), he still finally found solace and a form of redemption or at least a path closer to it by finally being at peace with Po and accepting him as the dragon warrior and grow respect for him which was enough for my 10 years old soul to have found inner peace and feel feels about him. My baby, he finally healed...

But as the way it was advertised... a fucking joke. We were lied to for Tai Lung, Shifu was useless to the plot and made into a joke, Po's new status was super simplified as a magical power, I don't like the different style for the new characters they don't feel like belonging to the KFP universe, the Dragon Warrior is supposed to be known all across China but now only the Valley knows about him, not enough serious moments for too much comedy (it was good sure, but really not the balance the first 2 movies had), speaking of which SO many retcons (LORD SHEN NEVER WAS A KUNG FU MASTER !?! NOR WENT TO THE SPIRITS REALM, HE LITERALLY FUCKING DIED !?!?! ANF KAI WASN'T A MASTER EITHER ?!?!) and oversimplification (magic used to be subtle in the mortal world in the franchise. Having grown up around the Seattle area, I wouldn't consider it cold at all lol. My current area is a cold semi-arid climate and that STILL isn't considered super cold. The coldest it hit this winter (counting Windchill) was -15 F. The biggest thing is you learn to adapt after years of dealing with it. I was in California during those 120+ F days and I wanted to die, but I do fine with the cold. The difference is that I didn't grow up in CA climate. People need to understand that people grew up in DIFFERENT climates, so of course Mid-CA's are gonna think 25 F is cold, while people who haven't dealt with 120 F are gonna struggle there.

Followed a conversation on Reddit where OP, living in Northern Europe, whined about having no tolerance for cold and almost dying every winter because they can't keep warm. Someone comments "wow OP couldn't survive Seattle, it gets pretty cold in here." I looked up the climate of Seattle.

It's classified as "mediterranean zone". The same as Southern Europe. According to Wikipedia, the coldest month of the year is January, with temperatures ranging around 3-9 degrees celsius. The lowest it has gotten in recent years was -8 celsius in the winter of 2021. For the sake of reference, I'm from Finland and universally regarded a wimp because I can't handle being outside in -15 to -20 for more than like an hour.

hm, for pitdd worldbuilding, how about Exile? what went down there?

c!Tommy was exiled as in canon, and in fact not much diverges until the actual start of Exile, however I shifted the timeline a lot, so now exile lasts about a month. ( November 30th to January 1st) when c!Tommy finally makes a break for Techno's cabin.) I wanted to make exile a bit longer, because it does contain a lot in terms of plot advancement. Also I am horrible with keeping things chronologically neat, so preserving November 16th is as best as I am really gonna do lmao. Where Tommy would end up going was left ambiguous by Dream, as he only mentioned, "northeast of the L'manberg habour." c!Tommy ends up being dragged for 3 fucking days across the unnamed at that point sea and then made a sudden, sharp turn upwards- towards the rocky cold beach shores and sparsely wooded meadows of Logstedshire. (Disclaimer, I am absolutely horrible with locations and directions. Awful. So the Dream SMP map and geography has been slightly altered, I try to stick as close to canon as I can while trying to make it more realistic) This area bordered on a subartic tundra, making growing food hard even in the best of times due to the lack of resources, nutrient poor and rocky soils, and lack of Fresh water. Even further northeast, was Techno's base (which fell in the gray area of claimed Dream SMP lands) Now in PITDD, Logstedshire was already an established place by the time it fell under Dream's command shortly before Exile itself. The town which sat on the very edge of the shores, just past where hightide would sweep it away? A very old, nearly abandoned town of less than a dozen (yes we have dsmp citizens just to flesh this goddamn server out) residents. Tommy and Dream made a very quick stop in town to get supplies for him, before taking Tommy further west along the coast, to an even higher area slightly more inland, where c!Tommy would make camp. Tommy just like in canon, regularly had his things blown up, including eventually even the items Dream had allowed him to keep that he bought in Logstedshire proper. A lot of Tommy's time without Dream was spent trying not to die of hypothermia, digging around for seafood during low tide, and trying to maintain a fire with what wood he did have. He was visited as in canon, although most of the times he was yoinked from his beach to the actual town before hand which gave the impression c!Tommy was at least staying in an actual house instead of jackshit nowhere. c!Tommy however, memorizes the route into the town, and uses it to get more food and water without Dream's knowledge. He also befriends a local, MD. (I will not fucking say Mexican Dream more than I have too.) There's also the whole plotline of c!Tommy drowning in the ocean, I have a post about that somewhere, but basically it ties in with c!Dream's origin story. :) Also in PITDD, nobody else can 'see' ghostbur. Only c!Tommy can see him at all times, and he has the ability to make Ghostbur visible for short amounts of time to other people (although this is very draining for c!Tommy to do)

Svoj vizualni jezik opredeljuje kot milenijski pogled na pop art v poznem kapitalizmu oziroma kot prisvajanje potrošniške estetike za naslavljanje pomanjkljive sposobnosti mišljenja v sodobni družbi. V skladu s tem v svojih delih pogosto uporablja ikonografijo pop- in sub- kultur(e), vanje vključuje različne vsakdanje predmete (igrače, pripomočke, okraske, oblačila...), vse to pa začini z elementi iz osebne mitologije, ki se je izoblikovala skozi odraščanje na slovenskem podeželju.  Dela, ki jih predstavlja na tokratni razstavi, povezuje naslov Hi!poteze. Povzet je po izhodiščni sliki celotne razstave, ki prikazuje ogrado, v kateri je zaprto fantastično bitje, sestavljeno iz delov različnih živali, ob njem pa stoji počeno jajce z razprtimi krili. Slika predstavlja na eni strani zaprtost domišljije ali ustvarjalnosti v (umetniški) sistem oziroma strukturo, na drugi pa željo po osvoboditvi. Naslov Hi!poteze torej povzema umetnikovo raziskovanje novih načinov izražanja v umetniški produkciji. Z ozirom na to pridobi izraz hipoteze nekoliko drugačen pomen od običajnega, kar umetnik tudi zaznamuje z medklicajem. Če v polju znanosti označuje trditev, ki jo je potrebno dokazati ali potrditi, tu, v polju umetnosti predstavlja nekakšno antitezo obstoječemu, konceptualno odprto postavko, ki ima lahko več možnih rešitev.  Ena od umetnikovih hi!potez se nanaša na način, kako so umetniška dela ustvarjena in posledično tudi razstavljena. Umetnik na razstavi predstavlja slike in objekte, ki jih jukstapozicijsko vmešča v galerijski prostor kot instalacijo. Slike in objekti so nastajali vzporedno, umetnik pa je s tem, ko je prehajal iz slike v objekt in nazaj, puščal formo vseskozi odprto za nove rešitve. Postopnost in eksperimentalnost ustvarjalnega procesa se odraža tudi v kompozicijah, saj jih že na prvi pogled zaznamuje drzen preplet različnih tehnik, materialov in slogov, pa tudi prehajanje med slikarskim in kiparskim medijem. Tudi na vsebinski ravni je razstava zastavljena kot skupek raznorodnih fragmentov, saj se umetnik v teh delih dotika številnih problemov današnjega sveta, od terorja in vojaških spopadov, prek ideoloških, političnih, religioznih ekstremizmov, do onesnaževanja in podnebnih sprememb. Čeprav cinizem, grotesknost in dekadenca, ki spremljajo to problematiko, nedvomno odsevajo v njegovih delih, umetnik ne želi biti temačen, zato k tem problemom pristopa z neko naivnostjo, igrivostjo in humorjem, saj verjame, da bistveno bolj kot pridiganje ali žuganje s kazalcem odpirajo pot k refleksiji. ──────────── Miha Majes (1993) je leta 2019 diplomiral iz slikarstva na Akademiji za likovno umetnost in oblikovanje v Ljubljani, kjer trenutno nadaljuje magistrski vzporedni študij grafike in slikarstva. First Appearance: Wonder Woman 13 (1945) Creators: Joye Hummel and H.G Peter Abilities: Ruler of the subartic seamen. Leader of the cult of the electric fire walrus. Capable of living in subzero temperatures. Can swim in artic waters.

Backstory: Deep under the ice of Antartica there was a mysterious land which mankind has been seeking out for millennia. The fabled Garden of Eden. In this divine land despite being buried under miles of ice, it was ever warm, sunny, and the rich garden thrived with tropical fruits all year round.

Surrounding the Garden of Eden was a moat of black ice water and an intricate natural cavern system in the ice where dwelled ‘the seal men’ a race of blue skinned humanoids who evolved from seals. Having evolved in the darkened caverns and waters beneath the ice, they could not stand the light of the garden of Eden least they go blind. But whenever the fruits from that garden fell into the waters surrounding it, the Seal men would feast.

In the present day the Seal men had formed a modern monarchy and named their domain ‘Bitterland’ Ruled by King Rigor, these Seal men sought any possible means of getting their hands on the fruit of the Gardens of Eden. Even making an effort to grow and harvest it themselves, though the light necessary to maintain the plants would render them blind.

However in the time between the Seal men coming into existence and the present day, the Garden of Eden had been found by the goddess Aphrodite who using that ancient of laws ‘Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers’ claimed it for herself. Thus traveling to the planet Venus where she was worshipped by the immortal fairies who ruled that world, she appeared before their ruler Queen Desira and declared her wish to grant a new land to her daughter.

Thus Princess Eve of the fairy folk of Venus would be brought to the Garden of Eden as its queen, renaming it Eveland which would eventually come to be inhabited by her children and her childrens children as fairies are born from the dreams and desires to have offspring.

King Rigor and seeing them as a potential slave labor, would have his men and his son use nets and hooks to try and pull the Evegirls out of Eveland and into Bitterland, forcing them to work the fields the Seal men had created. All the while also trying to appease their deity, the electric fire walrus who would consume the Seal men if not appeased.

Miha Majes: Hi!potheses 3 – 24 February 2023 Opening: 3 February, at 7 pm Exhibition curator: Mojca Grmek Miha Majes is a visual artist of the youngest generation, working in the fields of painting, printmaking and spatial installation. He defines his visual language as a millennial interpretation of pop art in late capitalism and an appropriation of consumer aesthetics that addresses the lack of thinking skills in today's society. Accordingly, he often uses the iconography of pop- and sub- culture(s) in his works, incorporating various everyday objects (toys, gadgets, ornaments, clothes, etc.) and spicing it all up with elements from his personal mythology shaped while growing up in the Slovenian countryside. The works presented in the exhibition at hand are linked by the title Hi!potheses. It is summed up by the opening painting to the entire exhibition that depicts an enclosure in which a fantastic creature composed of parts of various animals is imprisoned, next to which stands a cracked egg with outstretched wings. The image, on the one hand, represents the confinement of the imagination and creativity within the (art) system or structure, and on the other hand, the desire for liberation. The title Hi!potheses therefore summarises the artist's exploration of new forms of expression in artistic production. In this sense, the term hypothesis takes on a somewhat different meaning than usual, which the artist also marks with an exclamation mark. If in the scientific field it denotes an affirmative statement that has to be proven or confirmed, here, in the field of art, it stands for a kind of antithesis to the existing, a conceptually open position that can have several possible solutions. One of the artist's hi!potheses refers to the way artworks are created and consequently exhibited. In the exhibition, Majes presents paintings and objects juxtaposed as an installation in the gallery space. The paintings and objects were created in parallel, and by switching from painting to object and back again, the artist constantly left the form open to new solutions. The gradual and experimental character of the creative process is also reflected in the compositions, which at first glance are characterised by a bold interplay of different techniques, materials and styles, as well as the transition between painting and sculpture. In terms of content, too, the exhibition is conceived as a collection of different fragments, for the artist's works touch upon the many problems of today's world, from terror and military conflict, to ideological, political and religious extremism, to environmental pollution and climate change. Although the cynicism, grotesqueness and decadence associated with these issues are undoubtedly reflected in his works, Majes does not want to be gloomy about it. This is why, he approaches these problems with a certain naivety, playfulness and humour, convinced that they are much more likely to open a path to reflection than lecturing or pointing the finger. ──────────── Miha Majes (1993) graduated in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana in 2019, where he is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Printmaking alongside with Painting. During his studies, he also furthered his knowledge at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan. He has presented his work in solo exhibitions at the Alkatraz Gallery in Ljubljana (2021) and TransStation SubArt in Kranj (2022), as well as in several group exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad, and has participated in a number of international artist residencies. He lives and works between Ljubljana and Radovljica.

it moves it breaths it chokes it whispers

passes so little so fast

a haze

miasma of isolation

frost in your eyes

blood congealed in a subartic storm

my throats welded opens

lungs frozen shut

tears a static stream

cold forgotten empty frozen numb

im so touch starved and love starved and and alone

the isolation growing on my skin like frost bite

numbness reachin like cancerous growths to my heart from my throat and chilling my tears

seeping into my sleeping soul

frozen and still and calcified

not even an echo to join me on this Arctic lake

nothing but cutting frost snd open scabs and blooded tears
