Life as an International Student at the University of Pécs: Perspective of a 22-year old Filipino
It has been more than a year since I have been given the opportunity to move about 9,900 km away from my hometown in the Philippines to pursue my studies in Hungary, and everything still feels surreal.
Starting a new chapter of life in a different country, with an entirely different culture, environment, and language is challenging – there’s no question about that. I have found myself struggling and mostly overwhelmed during the first two months in Pécs, especially, unlike other nationalities, the Filipino community here, is not big. Therefore, I did not have much people to ask for guidance and help on what to do and where to go; I had to mostly figure out to get by on my own – which molded me into who I am in the present.
Life as an international student, contrary to what we see on films, such as a student travelling to many places, always having the time of his life, is not always fun-and-rainbows, for there is so much more to it. One day, I would wake up with an excited feeling of going to the university, discovering new places, doing new things, and interacting with people, but the next day, I wake up feeling like I need to wrap myself up in a blanket to feel the warmth of home again – there’s no in-between. The truth is, no matter how much you think you have prepared for in this journey, things may or may not go as what you have expected.
Despite the fear-that-never-goes-away of living alone in a foreign country, I would never change anything. In fact, I am grateful that I took this leap of faith.
In the past year, the most important thing that I have learned is that respect is the key to survival. In a multiculturally-diverse community, you have to be open and understanding of the differences, in culture, religion, beliefs, or languages, that you might have with other people–what is acceptable for one may not be to the other; what one may think is weird, may just be a common thing for the other. It must be emphasized that the application of the golden rule of treating others how you would want to be treated, is very important in this setting.
In terms of my personal life, I have seen how much I have grown over a year: from handling my own finances that go to my needs and wants, and managing my time wisely in-and-out of the university. I have learned to not burn myself over pressure – by having time for university, for society, and for myself. There are days when my mind is occupied with the things I have to accomplish, or I am simply just low on energy. At times, back-to-back homework, or piled-up examinations, can be exhausting, which is completely normal. Therefore, it should be known that taking small breaks can bring back focus making us more productive in the long run. It is never prohibited to take breaks or have fun – it’s just at the end of the day, we must know what our priorities are.
I have learned to overcome my fear of engaging with the locals, by learning and practicing the basics of the Hungarian language, despite the possibility of making mistakes. Hungarians, themselves, know how complicated the language could be, so they appreciate it if you try – a simple, „Jó napot kívánók!” can go a long way. There's this satisfaction when you see them smile because they understood what you're saying, and because they know that you are trying. I had this experience of coming across an old woman during a hike and she spoke to me in Hungarian, asking how old I am and where I am from. It took some time to understand each other, but in the end, we connected, and that made me happy. From time-to-time, I come across her, and she never fails to greet me and ask me how I am doing. Slowly, I have learned to embrace the new surrounding I am in. Stepping out of my comfort zones may made me feel like a fish out of water at first, but I turned this challenging feeling into an opportunity to discover new places, traditions, food, and people.
My personal and professional network have also expanded more by having more engagement with people that share the same vision as I do. These people helped me realize that I am not the only one who could be struggling, and I should not be afraid to ask for help. These people became my emotional and mental support. Moreover, opportunities to enhance my technical skills have been presented to me by the university. In fact, I was able to participate on two training programs conducted in Italy and Poland, which were both funded, and most importantly, had let me expand my existing knowledge and skills by collaborating with experts in my field of study.
I would by lying if I say that being an international student is not difficult – there will be constant ups-and-downs. It all depends on you – on how you find the joy in the smallest of things. One thing is for sure, if you find the right company, and motivation for your goals, it gets better, slowly but surely.
Here’s a little reminder: If you feel like giving up, don’t. Instead, remind yourself why you started this journey in the first place – what and who are you I doing it for. All hard work bears fruit in the end.

Planning to Study in Australia After 12th? Here’s Everything You Should Know!
Australia has become one of the top destinations for Indian students looking to study abroad, especially after completing their 12th grade. With world-class universities, diverse programs, and a welcoming environment, Australia offers an excellent opportunity for academic growth and career development. If you're planning to study in Australia after 12th, this guide will provide you with everything you need to know—from choosing the right course to understanding the visa process.
Tumblr media
Why Choose Australia for Higher Education?
Before diving into the specifics, let's explore why Australia is such a popular choice for Indian students:
1. World-Class Education System
Australia is home to some of the best universities in the world. Many institutions such as the University of Melbourne, Australian National University (ANU), and the University of Sydney are ranked among the top 100 globally. The Australian education system focuses on research, critical thinking, and practical learning, making it an ideal choice for students who want a holistic educational experience.
2. Wide Range of Courses
Australia offers a diverse range of undergraduate courses across multiple disciplines such as engineering, business, computer science, medicine, arts, and more. Whether you're from a science, commerce, or arts background, you’ll find a course that aligns with your interests and career goals.
3. Cultural Diversity
Australia is one of the most multicultural countries in the world. With students from all over the globe, the country provides a dynamic environment where you can meet people from diverse cultures. This exposure enhances your global perspective, helping you adapt to different work environments and interact with people from various backgrounds.
4. Work Opportunities
Australia allows international students to work part-time during their studies, which is a great way to support yourself financially and gain valuable work experience. After completing your degree, you may also be eligible for post-study work visas, which can allow you to stay and work in Australia for a certain period.
5. High Quality of Life
Australia is known for its high standard of living, safe cities, and beautiful landscapes. With modern infrastructure, affordable healthcare, and an abundance of recreational activities, you’ll find it easy to balance academics and leisure.
Step-by-Step Guide to Studying in Australia After 12th
1. Choose the Right Course
The first step is to decide what course you want to pursue. Australia offers a wide variety of undergraduate courses for Indian students, and your choice will depend on your academic background and career interests. Here are some of the most popular options:
Engineering: Australia is known for its top-notch engineering programs, with universities offering degrees in civil, mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering. Universities like the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales (UNSW), and Monash University offer exceptional engineering programs.
Business and Management: If you're interested in pursuing a career in business, finance, or management, Australia has some of the best business schools, including the University of Sydney, University of Queensland, and Australian National University (ANU).
Computer Science: As technology continues to evolve, computer science is becoming one of the most sought-after fields of study. Institutions like the University of Melbourne and the University of Sydney offer specialized programs in computer science, data science, and artificial intelligence.
Health Sciences and Medicine: Australia is renowned for its healthcare programs. You can pursue courses in nursing, medicine, pharmacy, and public health at top universities such as the University of Sydney, the University of Melbourne, and UNSW.
Arts and Humanities: If you have a passion for literature, history, or social sciences, Australian universities offer comprehensive programs in arts and humanities. The University of Melbourne and the Australian National University are great choices for these fields.
Law: Law courses in Australia are globally recognized, and universities like the University of Sydney and UNSW offer programs that prepare you for an international legal career.
2. Research Universities
Once you've chosen a course, the next step is to research which Australian universities offer the program you're interested in. You’ll need to consider factors like university rankings, campus facilities, student support services, and post-graduation job prospects. Some of the top universities for Indian students include:
University of Melbourne
University of Sydney
Australian National University (ANU)
University of Queensland
University of New South Wales (UNSW)
These institutions are known for their academic excellence, research opportunities, and global connections.
3. Check Eligibility Requirements
Each university and course in Australia has its own eligibility requirements. Here are the typical requirements for Indian students after 12th:
Academic Qualifications: You must have completed your 12th grade with a certain percentage, usually 60-70%, depending on the course. For competitive courses like engineering or medicine, the requirements may be higher.
English Language Proficiency: Since courses in Australia are taught in English, you’ll need to prove your proficiency in the language. The most common tests accepted are the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), and PTE (Pearson Test of English).
Entrance Exams: Some courses, particularly in fields like medicine or law, may require you to take entrance exams or additional tests as part of the selection process.
4. Apply to Universities
After you’ve identified your desired course and university, the next step is to apply. Most Australian universities have an online application system where you can submit your academic documents, English proficiency scores, and other required materials.
Application Fee: Keep in mind that some universities charge an application fee, so make sure you’re aware of this before you submit your application.
Documents Required: Typical documents include your 12th-grade mark sheets, English proficiency test results, passport copy, and personal statement. Some universities may also require letters of recommendation or a CV.
5. Secure Funding
Studying in Australia can be expensive, but there are various options available to fund your education:
Scholarships: Many Australian universities offer scholarships for international students. These can cover tuition fees, living expenses, or both. Be sure to check the scholarship opportunities available at the universities you’re applying to.
Education Loans: If you need financial assistance, you can apply for education loans from Indian banks or financial institutions. Some banks offer loans specifically for studying abroad, with competitive interest rates and flexible repayment terms.
Part-Time Work: As an international student, you are allowed to work up to 40 hours per fortnight during your studies and full-time during holidays. This can help cover living expenses and gain work experience.
6. Apply for a Student Visa
Once you’ve been accepted to an Australian university, you’ll need to apply for a student visa (subclass 500). To be eligible, you must show proof of your university admission, sufficient funds to cover your tuition and living costs, and health insurance. Read More: How Much Money is Required to Study in Australia?
Visa Requirements: Make sure you meet the visa requirements, including having Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), sufficient funds for living expenses, and a valid passport.
Visa Process: The visa application process can take several weeks, so it’s important to apply well in advance. Be prepared for interviews and additional documentation if required.
7. Prepare for Life in Australia
Before you leave, it’s important to make preparations for your stay in Australia:
Accommodation: Choose whether you want to stay on-campus, in private student housing, or rent an apartment. Many universities offer accommodation services for international students.
Travel and Insurance: Book your flight and make sure you have travel insurance in place. Your OSHC will cover most health-related issues while studying.
Adjusting to Life in Australia: Moving to a new country can be overwhelming, but Australia is a student-friendly destination. Take time to learn about the culture, public transportation, and local customs. Universities also have orientation programs to help international students settle in.
Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them
1. Homesickness
Many international students experience homesickness when they first arrive in Australia. To overcome this, stay connected with family and friends, join student clubs, and make new friends on campus.
2. Cultural Adjustment
Australia is a multicultural society, but you may need some time to adjust to the cultural differences. Participate in university events and activities to get involved with the community.
3. Financial Management
Studying abroad can be expensive. To manage your finances, create a budget that includes tuition, accommodation, food, and transportation costs. Look for student discounts and opportunities to save.
Final Thoughts
Studying in Australia after 12th can be a life-changing experience. With its world-class universities, high-quality education, and diverse culture, Australia offers everything you need for academic success.
