I hope you're all doing well and enjoying October - kinda crazy to imagine it's already half over. Luckily, I have some family visiting and I'll get to travel a bit after this week. I'm so excited!

I am waiting for some things to get taken care of (might have a job, getting visa things sorted) so things are really in flux for me. Trying to take it day by day. I've really been enjoying getting back into blogging, studyblr things, and making study aids. I am going to start making some art too - some internet café art!

Plural Nouns and Minor Vowel Harmony

1. Understanding Plural Nouns in Turkish

In Turkish, to make nouns plural, you add the suffix -lar or -ler to the noun. The choice between these suffixes depends on minor vowel harmony rules.

-ler is used if the last vowel in the noun is a front vowel (e, i, ö, ü).

-lar is used if the last vowel in the noun is a back vowel (a, ı, o, u).

Example:

Kitap (book) → Kitaplar (books) (last vowel is 'a', so use -lar)

Kalem (pen) → Kalemler (pens) (last vowel is 'e', so use -ler)

2. Minor Vowel Harmony

Minor vowel harmony in Turkish affects suffixes, making them adapt to the vowels in the root word. When a suffix is added to a word, it must harmoniously match the last vowel of the word.

Unlike major vowel harmony, there are only two possible vowels when using minor vowel harmony.

Front Vowels: e, i, ö, ü -> use e

Back Vowels:  a, ı, o, u -> use a

Exercises

1. When do you use E and when do you use A? Fill in the correct vowels.

It kind of takes time, it can be annoying and I doubt myself sometimes whether it’s good or not but I always end up liking the end result and being proud of myself even though it’s not a lot. But I feel like there is so much to be done to make the apps (Goodnotes, Notability) better.
