COLLAGE ON VIEW
Fictions
Andrea Burgay at the Kansas City Public Library, Central Library in Kansas City, Missouri, USA through 17 August 2024. Andrea Burgay’s “Fictions” series explores realms of remembrance, nostalgia, projection, and evolution. The Brooklyn-based artist creates sculptural collages out of deconstructed paperbacks found at thrift stores or used book sales. These books, in genres such as science fiction, action/adventure, or romance, are chosen for a color or texture that resonates, or a title or phrase that attracts the eye. In her studio, Burgay layers the books with collage elements, then repeatedly takes them apart and reassembles them into new forms. The result: a transformation that evokes both deterioration and regrowth. Read More

Kolaj Magazine, a full color, print magazine, exists to show how the world of collage is rich, layered, and thick with complexity. By remixing history and culture, collage artists forge new thinking. To understand collage is to reshape one's thinking of art history and redefine the canon of visual culture that informs the present.

Louise Brooks - The Flapper Icon
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mary Louise Brooks (born in Cherryvale, Kansas on November 14, 1906) was an American film actress during the 1920s and 1930s. She is regarded today as "The Flapper Icon," in part due to her trend-setting bob hairstyle and modern fashion sense. Those that do not recognize her name almost certainly know her look.
Born in a typical a typical Midwestern community, Brooks joined the Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts in Los Angeles at 15. She soon found work a as a chorus girl in New York City. This attracted the attention of Walter Wanger, a producer at Paramount. He had her sign a contract with the studio in 1925. During this time, she gained a cult following in Europe for her role in the Howard Hawks' film A Girl in Every Port (1928). Dissatisfied with her mediocre roles in Hollywood, she went to Germany in 1929 and starred in some of the silent era's films, including Pandora's Box (1929).
When Brooks returned to Hollywood in 1931, she was cast in mainstream films such as God's Gift to Women (1931). However, her career prospects significantly declined by 1940. She briefly returned to Wichita, where she was raised, and then moved to New York City, where she worked numerous jobs. Following the rediscovery of her films by cinephiles in the 1950s, she began writing articles about her film career and had had special relationships with film historians James Card, John Kobal, and Kevin Brownlow.
After suffering from degenerative osteoarthritis and emphysema for many years, Brooks died of a heart attack in her apartment in Rochester, New York at 78.
Legacy:
Served as the inspiration for the long-running Dixie Dugan (1929-1966) newspaper strip by John H. Striebel, the comic books of Valentina (1965-1996) of Guido Crepax, and Ivy Pepper in Tracy Butler's Lackadaisy (2006-2020) comic series
Is the basis of the movie Show Girl (1928) and its subsequent musical Show Girl (1929), and the graphic novel entitled Louise Brooks: Detective (2015)
Opened a dance studio in Beverly Hills and Wichita, Kansas in the 1940s
Authored a booklet titled The Fundamentals of Good Ballroom Dancing in 1940
Became a noted film writer in the late 1950s for various journals like Film Culture and Sight and Sound
Inspired many cinematic and literary characters such as Sally Bowles in Bob Fosse's Cabaret (1972) and Lulu in Something Wild (1986)
Published a collection of autobiographical essays, Lulu in Hollywood, in 1982, which was ranked number 44 in the Hollywood Reporter's "100 best film books of all time" in 2023 and number 28 in the Los Angeles Times' "50 best Hollywood books of all time" in 2024
Presented with the George Eastman Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Art of Film in the 1982 Festival of Film Artists
Ranked number 44 by Empire magazine's 100 sexiest stars in film history in 1995
Is the subject of the Emmy-nominated documentary Louise Brooks: Looking for Lulu, which was commissioned by Turner Classic Movies in 1998
Is a central character in the PBS film The Chaperone (2018), which depicts her initial arrival in New York

Barflies: (A Becky Albright/Jonathan Crane short piece)
She knew he would be just across the street. All the while she maneuvered her way home, she felt his stare, peering from around corners, leering from bodega windows. At a certain point, she caught him.
“Back the fuck up, you know I’m testifying against you, Crane. There is nothing you can do to hold me back.”
“Rebecca.” His meticulously controlled tone made her squirm. Precise. A perfectly chosen full name.
Silence permeated the space between them. No traffic. No pedestrians,
“Jonathan.” The second she uttered his first name, she realized the mistake she had made. A small, halfways smile flickered across his face, as instantaneous as the blinking bar sign behind him. She gripped her cane. He stood taller.
“Let’s talk for a moment, Becky.”
She said yes. Why the fuck did she say yes?
Without even a glance to either side, she crossed the street, brushing past him to the very same bar with blinking lights.
A dive. The city was proud of its dives. Each neighborhood, some boroughs apart, some blocks, bickered and snickered about what they each considered a real dive. Irish pubs, college sports bars, and those with darkly pithy names (the sorts long-debated whether or not they were offensive, some poking fun at addiction recovery programs, others about the size of appendages, and even others mocking a less-fortunate, rural way of life) did not compare to this place. Hardly the size of a closet. Limited bar seats. Limited space in general. Jonathan followed Becky, quiet as a house cat with the breaths of a predatory sort, maneuvered her way to the dimly lit  back corner.  Their stools hobbled beneath them both.
“You’re paying.” Controlled. Level. “Your suggestion. You pay.”
Jonathan did not fight. He had wads of cash burrowed into the holes in coat pockets, lost so deep they were practically woven into the lining. It wasn’t much. He didn’t have much and had been unable to own a credit card since his professor days. But Becky Albright asked.
“If I don’t testify, will you leave me alone?” A beat. Even through the music, echoing throughout the small space, silence permeated. She waved the bartender over. Another beat.“Two shots of gin. Please.”
Jonathan quirked a brow.
“I didn’t expect you to be a gin drinker.”
“Answer the question.”
The shots arrived before he could. Simultaneously, they reached, threw them back, both grimacing. Twin movements.
“Sure. If you don’t testify, I’ll leave you alone.”
The bartender swung by.
“Any drinks?”
“Aperol Spritz, please?”
“Do we look like an aperol spritz kind of place?”
Before Becky could reply, Jonathan cleared his throat. All it took was a stare.
“Make that two.”
He wasn’t an Aperol Spritz drinker, but he would be that night.
The tension slowly, silently started to resolve itself. The bar flies trickled in and out but it wasn’t busy. Becky, in the absence of others, eased in the new silence.
Becky watched Jonathan’s hands as the drinks arrived, waiting for the moment he drugged her. The moment never came.
In the dim, hazy lighting he looked almost, almost handsome, neon dancing off the wire rimmed glasses as he pushed them up the bridge of his nose. Becky studied his long, bony fingers.
Another round later (two if you include the complementary round of shots the bartender-who, for reasons neither of them could fathom, went by the name Kansas-slid them on the way out), and, against all better judgment, Becky led Jonathan back to her apartment. To the collapsing studio she had called home since law school started, where she still owed rent. Shabby. Cluttered.
Liquor loosens lips and, even still, loose lips sink ships. As if her mind evaded her, evaporated into the persistent, steady water droplets that leaked from her bathroom ceiling, Becky showed him her door. And as he looked around the place that, to any normal person, would look hoarder-ish, felt like home.
“My window stays unlatched. I’m sorry if it’s cold. Easy access to the fire escape, though.” Becky Albright knew what she was doing. And she knew what she was doing when she fumbled with the buttons on her dress (a yellow, vintage number she found from one of those community-oriented thrift stores).
Jonathan stood, unbudging at the foot of the bed. She felt his gaze on each movement. And then, she looked at him. At his shabby suit. At his hair that was starting to thin at its line.
“What are you afraid of, plucky Becky?” His voice was soft as he walked closer to her, suit falling to the floor. She heaved herself back on her bed, gaze unfaltering.
“It sure as fuck, isn’t you.”
Plucky Becky heaved as he slid himself onto her. Lips as cracked and chapped as her own ran along her jaw, her collarbone, down and down.
She told the truth. She was not afraid.
When Becky Albright took the stand, all those close enough could see what had happened. A small, rounded bump protruding from just behind her navy blue sweater.
Becky Albright never did wind up testifying against Jonathan Crane.

$6.35 Million for Housing Homelessness in KS
Johnson County has allocated $6.35 million in federal funds to address housing and homelessness in the county. The funds were allocated after Lenexa rejected a plan to build a low-barrier homeless resources center. Instead, the county commissioners voted to use the funds on several other housing initiatives, including a Habitat for Humanity project and support for a cold weather shelter. The county commissioners took separate votes on five items, including building new houses and apartments, expanding space, and providing supplies for county homeless shelters.

WOODVALE
Folklore was recorded at a total of 5 studios:
Conway- LA (1989 also recorded here)
Kitty Committee- LA (1989 also recorded here)
Electric Lady- NY
Long Pond- NY
Rough Customer- NY
NY-3 LA-2
Exile ends in 3..2.. does exile end in LA? I too am one of the ones that expects an announcement for a last stop in LA.
3rd letter of the alphabet is C 2nd letter is B. Mirrored that is BC.. British Columbia? I wonder who’s gonna be there? Okay I’ll tell you tswizzle will be in Vancouver which is the largest city in BC for her 1st of 2 stops in Canada. 11/14-11/23. There is a break in between those shows as well. This is also the last stop of the tour prior to her next announced release.
Kansas City hosts LA on 12/8… the last day of the eras tour.
Kansas City to Toronto is 1,610.9 miles (8.9)
…I’m gonna have to join a fantasy league next year..
The Chargers-Chiefs first meeting was 9/10/1960 latest meeting was 9/29/2024. They have had a total of 129 meetings. I don’t like that meeting sounds like they are discussing stock prices, but i suppose saying played with each other is inappropriate. So like why don’t they just say games? Is it a game if it isn’t fun anymore?
Anywho in 2010 the chargers kicked the chiefs ass with a score of 31-0. And back in 1964 the chiefs kicked the chargers asses 49-6.
These two teams are now the farthest apart pair of teams in the same division
*there was speculation that after the release of both Folklore and Evermore that there was going to be a third to make it a trilogy.
There were 8 special editions of Folklore (album 8) on vinyl and cd. On the Hide and Seek variant of Folklore on the top right in a barely there print says Woodvale. And on the bottom left it says Taylor Swift.
Okay 1st letter from each of those words are: WTS. Rearrange WST. She did say that she forgot how the west was won.. E is the missing letter to make that word WEST E is the 5th letter of the alphabet and it is also the 1989 album. WEST each letter added together = 22 which then = 4 the 4th track on 1989 is OOTW. This song was made available from Big Machine for download on 10/14/2014 as a promotional single (13 days before the release of 1989 on 10/27/2014.). She then premiered the music video at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on 12/31/2015. Then the song was released to US pop and hot adult contemporary radio as the album’s 6th single on 1/19/2016.
-1/11 is “No Longer New Years Day” this is 8 days after that.
-1/19 is:
National archery day -> The Archer
National Lucy Day -> BS character name in CrossRoads.
Robert E Lee’s Birthday (state of FL)
Confederate Memorial Day (Texas) *this and the one above are the two states mentioned in the song Florida!!!
1/19-1/25 is national handwriting analysis week. Irish coffee week. World Kiwanis week.
The North American International Auto Show is scheduled for 1/10-1/20/25. Oh shut up the last day of that is Inauguration Day.. thats a whole other post
Pro-Life Day
World Snow Day -> Snow on the Beach
1809 Edgar Allan Poe
1943 Janis Joplin
1946 Dolly Parton
1954 Katey Sagan
1992 Shawn Johnson
1/19/1861 Georgia becomes the 5th state to secede during the American Civil War
1/19/1883 the first electrical lighting system employing overhead lights built by Thomas Edison begins service in Roselle, New Jersey. -> in the karma video there are 5 Taylor’s in 5 light bulbs. 5th album 5th track is All You Had To Do Was Stay. But also 5+5=10 which according to swifties is Midnights but according to Forbes that is Fearless TV. “This ain’t Hollywood this is a small town.” Holly-Christmas plant. Wood-vale. Out of the woods? Out of Hollywood? Post Malone tried to warn you it was bleeding.
1/19/1920 The United States Senate votes against joining the League of Nations.
1/19/1937
1/19/1953 Lucille Ball gave birth on TV. It was filmed on 11/14/1952. This episode was one of the most watched in television history reaching 44 million Americans. It was also the first time that pregnancy and childbirth were depicted on national television.
1/19/1955 1st presidential news conference filmed for TV (Eisenhower)
1/19/1971 The Beatles, Helter Skelter, is played at the Charles Manson trial
1/19/1977 Snow falls in Miami, Florida. The only time in history it has snowed there. -> Snow on the Beach.
1/19/1981 The Iran Hostage Crisis US and Iranian officials sign an agreement to release 52 American Hostages after 14 months in captivity.
1/19/1983 Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie is arrested in Bolivia.

1/19/1986 The first IBM PC computer virus (c)Brain
1/19/19991 Gulf War: Iraq fires a second Scud missile into Israel causing 15 injuries.
1/19/1997 Madonna won best actress for Evita at the Golden Globes
1/19/1997 The New Horizons probe is launched by NASA on the first mission to Pluto.
Woodvale
She said in an interview she “was afraid to unveil the real title so she made a mock up one and then forgot about it.” Right… The TC Maserati had an issue with a mock up or something? Wait it’s a trident, like Little Mermaid?
*The Woodvale historic District is a national historic district that encompasses multiplee historic properties that are located in Broad top Township (area code is 814=13), Bedford County, Wells Township, Fulton County, Wood Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on 7/24/1992. This district included 79 buildings. Woodvale was also a mine-ing community
Woodvale & Glendale both are 8 letter places. In this instance there are 3 in this post.
Show #1 of the Eras Tour was in Glendale, AZ. Which is home to the Global HQ of the KKK/Aryan Nations. *5/23/2016 an article on Vice.com states that Nazis and members of the “alt-right” have labeled TS as an “Aryan Goddess.” They claim that her songs “red pilled” America into believing a conservative, racist agenda… hm you try reading that without laughing, let me know.
OR
we have Glendale, California (20 miles away from Sofi Stadium) which was referred to as “sundown town” and has a dark history of anti-semitism and racial discrimination. From Nazi rallies in the 1930s to the presence of the KKK.
Train from glendale to Sofi is 1h 45. Minutes. Show #145 is 11/22/2024 N5/6 in Toronto. (This is my reminder that LA had NO TY Post)
N1 in LA was show #48 (12) N6 in LA was show #53 (8).
12/8 is the last Eras Show. Show #149 (14 which can be reduced to 5) but 5/14/23 was show #22 N3/3 Philadelphia, PA. The SS were both from Fearless (2nd album) tracks 4 and 12. -> -> 412 is the area code for Pittsburgh, PA which is 4hr and 37 minutes (319.5 miles) to Philadelphia via US-22 E and I-76 E. -> -> -> Pittsburgh on the Eras Tour was 6/16/2023 and 6/17/2023 show #32 and #33. ->*->*-> the previous 2 shows before Pittsburgh were in Detroit where the 1st surprise song was Speak Now “Haunted” track #12. The last surprise song played in Pittsburgh was Speak Now “The Story Of Us” track #7. 12/7/24 is the 2nd to last show of the tour #148 (13)… this would be labeled as a reach but its not because on her merch site she has Fearless bookends available for purchase, they are White Horses. Two of them, just liked the #2 she has been holding up. Also this makes the “exile ends in 3…2” the bookends songs between the two cities are album 3 and the physical book ends are album 2. **Also White Horse was released as a single for Fearless on 12/8/2024, which is the last night of the Eras Tour as I stated as the beginning of this paragraph. (So many of her eggs have lead me to the last night, which holy shit is that a play on words for the band Our Last Night? They have covered her 25x in performances since 2017, Anti-Hero and Blank Space. Yes I do think it is a play on that because I just found an unreleased 2004 TS cover of “Our Last Night” by Better Than Ezra) I’m calling it Our Last Night now, omg cause it’s Ours? Omg that was released on 12/5/2011 as a single. 12/5/24 is the night before N1 in Vancouver. 12/5 is a mirror of 5/12 which was the #87 show N4/4 in Paris. The surprise songs didn’t have matcha bookends they had matching songs in the middle, the 2nd guitar song was Red (album 4) (track 3) is 34 backwards and she turns 35 this year. The 1st piano song was Red (album 4) (track 16) 416 is the area code for Toronto. -> The Toronto Maple Leafs (like Maple Latte? The hidden message from “All Too Well”?) have a 3 peat in their Stanley Cup history 1947, 1948, and 1949 in which 48 and 49 they sweeped the Red Wings back to back. (Sweep.. like she was sweeping the yellow brick road in the Karma music video?) the Maple Leafs also rank #2 in the list of most Stanley Cup wins with them having 13 wins.
*The Vancouver Canucks, along with the Sabres, are the two oldest teams in the NHL to have never won the Stanley Cup.
**11/13/2013: TS (while dressed like the British Flag in the most Spice Girls way possible) has her first performance at a VS Fashion Show NYC “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up) with FOB. During this performance Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevingne (1989 World Tour 6/12/2015, 6/27/2015, 7/11/2015 guests) were the Angels on Stage (OMG are they the ones that rolled their eyes?!?) and also performed “IKYWT” while this song was happening fake snow was falling on the stage -> The Pittsburgh Penguins used the FOB song in their 4/13/2013 commercial (11 years ago). -> flash forward to 2024 on 11/13/2024 the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Detroit Red Wings. The most recent game was the Red Wings home opener at Little Caesar’s Arena on 10/10/2024 where the Penguins beat the Red wings 6-3. -> The Red Wings have won 11 Stanley Cups. The Penguins have won 5 Stanley Cups, they are 1 of the 2 teams with 5 wins the other being Edmonton. (11/5 was Election Day.. hmmm)

Day 73- Film: Kansas City Confidential
Release date: November 11th, 1952.
Studio: United Artists
Genre: Noir
Director: Phil Karlson
Producer: Edward Small
Actors: John Payne, Coleen Gray
Plot Summary: An ex-cop thinks he has pulled off the perfect heist, getting away with over a million dollars. He roped in 3 criminals, but they are all masked and unaware who their cohorts are. When flower delivery man Joe Rolfe is falsely and publicly accused of the crime, his life falls apart, and he determines he will find whoever was behind the heist.
My Rating (out of five stars): ***
Damn it! For a film that started out so promising, I kind of ended up hating it. It’s not a bad film, the hate just comes from my disappointment at where everything ultimately landed. The ending was my biggest problem with it.
The Good:
There were a lot of “normal” looking actors of the noir type. The guy who played Pete Harris especially had such an interesting expressive face. It reminded me a little of Scandal Sheet, where most of the cast were very ordinary and real looking except the two romantic leads.
The suspense and mystery during the earlier part of the film. It wasn’t a whodunit, it was more of a "how can this be reverse engineered?" kind of suspense.
It often went places I didn’t see coming- in about the first 2/3 of the movie I found it interesting. The heist happened right at the beginning of the movie, when most heist films build up to it for suspense. Joe became the protagonist, when at first it seemed he was going to be a fringe character. One of the men involved in the heist unexpectedly dies in the middle of the movie. The ex-cop ringleader openly hangs out maskless with the thugs he hired, risking them being able to identify him by his voice and body type.
The Bad: (bigger spoilers)
The ending, as far as Joe was concerned. First of all, I did not see Joe as a hero. His motivation seemed to be more revenge and greed than justice. But suddenly at the end of the film, the audience was told he was a hero. The Big Guy even outright says it before he dies- “tell my daughter he is a good guy and tell the authorities to give him the reward money.” I didn’t like making him a romantic hero all the sudden.
The ending, as far as the tone of the film was concerned. To end with an out of place “happy ending” annoyed me. I don’t typically like it when noirs wrap everything up in a happy bow- it compromises the dark themes of the rest of the movie. It obliterates most of the cynicism and societal questioning that came before it.
The sweatiness! I swear they must have used gallons of water or oil to douse the actors' faces with. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen so many people sweat such copious amounts in a film. By the end of the movie, I could barely stand it. I kept wanting to wipe everyone's faces (or the screen!) with a towel. I like some sweat shown in movies for dramatic effect, but this was almost silly.
The character of Helen Foster. At first, I liked her, because she was obviously very intelligent and highly educated, which wasn’t common in films of the era. Then she decided to make a cause out of Joe and “help” him/i.e. change him. No, lady! Spend your time elsewhere! He doesn’t need you to “save” him! Your love won’t “fix” him!

At least the fridge is happy to be here.
Tumblr media
I'm currently looking for a new home in the Kansas City area, but after seeing this 3-bed, 2-bath charmer I think I might need to consider moving to another state. Or country.
Tumblr media
Arr, walk the plank(s), mateys.
What looked like a concrete walkway in the first picture turns out to be a series of planks leading to the unpaved driveway, behind which is…another house?
Tumblr media
And behind this house is yet another house. Actually, a shed. But when you really think about it...isn't a shed just a house for all of your neighborhood's spiders?
In case you'd rather not think about that, here's an interior picture.
Tumblr media
The small, evil Luck Dragon(s?) do not convey. Fortunately.
A small studio apartment with a weird sink in its tiny kitchen? A wet bar repurposed as a bedroom? Only the Chungus chrysalis hanging from the ceiling knows for sure, and it's not telling.
Tumblr media
A bit of creative camerawork is all it takes to make it look like your toilet is about to make the jump to hyperspace.
Go ahead, tell all your friends that your shower's haunted by a penguin ghost and its anime collection. Who'll believe you?
Tumblr media
And here we have the main house. I can't make out what's written on the sign, but I'm pretty sure it's not bless this mess.
Tumblr media
Give your home that chic "outdoors but also inside an office building" look with siding and drop ceilings! Mysterious ghost shadow optional; soul-draining fluorescent tubes not included.
Tumblr media
When you're the owner of small, evil dogs, some sacrifices have to be made. Human sacrifices, of course, but also little things. Like turning all of your cables and power strips into wall décor to prevent dogs from gnawing on the cables and setting your house on fire.
Tumblr media
Aloe vera and ceiling mold may not be as exciting as a penguin ghost, but this bathroom does feature a reflection just different enough that I can't be sure that there aren't actually two toilets in the room. Or that it's actually a window and there's another bathroom next to this bathroom.
Tumblr media
Don't worry; this particular species of floor-consuming space mold only spreads a few millimeters a year. Shift the dresser over a bit from time to time and it'll be fine. Just don't, you know, lick the floor or anything.
And finally...
Tumblr media
The eerie grin and unblinking eyes were bad enough, but then I began to ask myself why this house needs this absolute unit of a fridge, and...well, I can't help but think that this fridge's soul patch may be made of actual souls.
All this for $115,000. Any takers?

I was gonna write a reply in the replies but it got too long, so here it is lol
For a single person 60k year is very slightly below the median income (for people who are working year round, full time). 60k a year is where someone gets to the point that they can successfully rent a one-bedroom apartment or studio in most cities in the US. It's where professionals with moderately high demand degrees might start their earnings (think like, a marketing degree I guess. Lower end of engineering also starts here, but also starting wages for professionals get worse every year). But 60k is also where some might end their careers in earnings and call themselves lucky (any sort of long-term service industry job could end here, like general manager for a franchised restaurant).
So in most places in the US 60k would be considered lower middle class. Healthcare plans at this range are typically gonna have $2-4k deductibles on healthcare, with insurance then covering like 90% of healthcare costs after the deductible is all paid (and that's a better health plan than many). So a bad illness or intensive testing for a disease or disability or a single pregnancy could all move someone from "doing alright" to accruing huge amounts of debt that will keep mounting forever. Throw in medications for extremely common disabilities like diabetes or a single car accident that insurance considers partially your fault, and life moves from okay to hellish.
Like, don't get me wrong, when I was working full time at 24k a year I dreamed of making 40k, let alone 60k. But also 24k a year is sitting right on the poverty line for a single-person household (and also you're never going to get approved for a lease on a house or apartment at 24k without like 3 roommates in most places). 60k and good insurance will mean that you can responsibly own a pet and mostly see to its care, that you could have a single bedroom place, and probably take a week of vacation to see family once or twice a year.
Also all of this math totally changes depending on where you live. 60k is pretty secure in most places in Kansas, but if you're making 60k in a midsize city then one bad accident could absolutely annihilate everything. Also also the math all totally changes if you are financially supporting a sick parent, a disabled family member, a child, etc, and there are a lot of people who do.
5k/month is basically one hospital visit/vet bill and 2 weeks away from homelessness in the US. But also its really not "upper class" or the rich people think of when talking about eat the rich.
is it really THAT bad? i didn't mean to be rude or disrespectful but it's really extraordinary to me. is it normal to earn that much money? like, common? can a regular person earn that much or is it just like. white collar workers at the tail end of their career?

Kansas City #4
For Easter I went up to Brittany's house and got to meet her husband Josiah's family. We had a delicious pot-luck style lunch. The only part I wasn't wild about was the Red Hots flavored jello (who knew that even existed?). We had an egg hunt for the toddlers, though they were more interested in the bubble wands.
On Monday the 10th I went to Brittany's house again for book club. I met her friends Carrie and EmDen, who were so welcoming to me. We read "I'm Glad My Mom Died" by Jeanette McCurdy, which was very emotionally raw. It's not the type of book I usually read, but I enjoyed it. It was late at night by the time we finished discussing it, so Brittany let me stay the night in their guest room (thanks!). It felt like a little kid sleepover 😃
The next day I went to Social Swing at the CAST Studio (the home base of west coast swing pros Jesse and Ariel). I got to jump in on the Level 2 lesson about spirals, which was a little bit above my skill level, but it felt good to try something new. The dance night was different from what I'm used to in Little Rock, with a full hour long intermediate lesson and a half hour practicum after, then several hours of social dancing. The group there is much younger on average than my LR group and are very high energy. Fellow dancers Katya and Paul were so welcoming to me, dancing with me and engaging me in conversation. The cool thing about Kansas City is that I could dance every night of the week if I wanted, with 2 nights a week just for West Coast.
I got sick on Thursday and Friday (bleh). But I felt better by Saturday, so I went with my roommate Remy to the comedy/draglesque show "Body Language" at Barrel of the Bottoms in the West Bottoms neighborhood. The area seemed a little sketchy at night, so I was glad I had my roommate with me. The hosts called the space the "basement in the sky", which was spot on. It was up on the 4th floor of a big building that looks like it used to be apartments, but are now offices, and the walls are covered with art that looked psychedelic-inspired. The 4 comedians had me laughing so hard, and the burlesque dancer was unlike anything I've ever seen.
I'm really liking it here.
Signing off,
❤Alissa

K. S. Littlejohn Co Contractors 1926 (Photo taken by Scott Fajack on December 23, 2022 on Ocampo Dr at W Pampas Ricas Blvd. in the Rustic Canyon neighborhood near/ in the Pacific Palisades, CA).
I believe this Littlejohn is Captain Kenneth Stuart Littlejohn, who was born February 6, 1876 or 1877 in Montclair, New Jersey and died September 18, 1952 in Mexico. His father was Frank Bennoch Littlejohn and his mother was Elise (maybe Elsie) Thomson Stuart. He married Josephine Keizer (1887-1963), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dell Keizer, of Kansas City, Missouri. Their engagement was announced on page 34 of April 2, 1911 issue of The Kansas City Star (findagrave.com) and they were married May 18, 1912 in California (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Littlejohn-725#_note-0). He had a son Kenneth Keizer (1926-1950), who was born in Los Angeles, and three daughters - Virginia (1914-2000), Eleanor Stuart (1915-1977), and Lorna Jean (1916-1989). You can see them listed in the Fifteenth Census of the United States: 1930 Population Schedule seen here for the “Beverly Hills Township.”
In WWI, he was in the Sixth U. S. Engineers and “was recognized for bravery at the battle of Claire Chenes Woods, France” (History of the Sixth Engineers, Knickerbocker Press, 1920. Entry for Captain Kenneth S. Littlejohn, page 274).
Tumblr media
Littlejohn was given the contract for the canal digging by dragline excavator of Canal Rosales in Sinaloa, Mexico. “The work is somewhat out of the ordinary, as it is not a common thing for dragline excavators to be used for this purpose in Mexico, as native labor and mules are so plentiful and so cheap that they can almost compete even on big work with machine excavation.” (Not sure how much the laborers were making a fair living or not in that scenario!) At the time of this contract, the company was based in Tucson, Arizona. The foreman in charge of this project was Otto G. Fladung of Tucson. (”Canal Digging with Dragline Excavator in Old Mexico,” Excavating Contractor, Volumes 15-16, A.B. Morse Company, 1921). Fladung was born April 4, 1892 in Ohio and died February 10, 1923 in Tucson. He’s buried in the Saint Louis Cemetery in Louisville, Ohio.
Tumblr media
They lost a bid for work in Phoenix, AZ in 1922 (Southwest Builder and Contractor, Volume 60, F. W. Dodge Company, 1922), but they were awarded the contract for street work for Florence ave. between Van Ness Ave. and West Blvd. by the Los Angeles Building and Public Works department (Building and Engineering News, Volume 26, Issue 2, 1926).
Tumblr media
At the time of Kenneth Keizer’s birth, they lived at 2289 W 24th Street, in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of Los Angeles just south of the current 10 freeway. The house is still there - Zillow says the current house there was built in 1905. Kenneth Kaiser’s birth certificate gives me more confidence that Kenneth Stuart is the correct K.S. Littlejohn, as it lists his occupation as “Consulting Engineer” and his employer as “Self.”
K. S. Littlejohn Co. Engineers and Contractors are listed with K.S. Littlejohn and R.K. Walker in the Charter of the City of Los Angeles in Effect July 1, 1925 (Los Angeles Daily Journal, 1925). They can also be found in the Los Angeles County Incorporation Records (Second Series) 1903-1939 at the Seaver Center for Western History Research, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. In the Los Angeles City Directory 1925, the company’s principals are listed as K S Littlejohn and E T Brown, with their office at 626 S Spring Street, room 609 (Los Angeles Directory Company, Los Angeles, CA, 1925, accessed via the Los Angeles Public Library). Today that address has some bars and studio loft apartments, not 100% sure it’s still the same building but probably.
Littlejohn was one of the contractors in Fillmore, CA involved in the repair work after the St. Francis Dam Disaster, under the supervision of general director C. E. Bressler (Hundley, Norris and Jackson, Donald C. Heavy Ground: William Mulholland and the St. Francis Dam Disaster, University of Nevada Press, 2020).

bob write epic saga for Internet. Bobby boy is merely humble cat with aspirations of literary Renown, so he is open for Construction Critique. Enjoy a book!
The Splendor of The Cube and Sphere by Bob Odenkirk (the cat)
Robert stared across the landscape of Kansas City, a once American Dream now blighted with the terminal cancer of late-stage capitalism. There was a Starbucks on the corner outside his studio apartment like a pus-filled tumor. Trendy, overpriced food trucks passing like the spread of a toxin everyone else seemed to welcome.
It was disgusting. It was the new tomorrow.
He took in the horrors from the windowsill of his studio apartment, the one bastion of authenticity. It was there that the door flung open and she stormed in.
Marta draped herself onto the mattress of Robert's Murphy bed. The springs moaned pitifully under her svelte form.
"It's finally happened," she said in stony mourning, "Johnny's dead. The Civella Family took him down right outside the old toy shop."
Robert turned his attention to her and eyed her up and down. Marta had a nostalgic figure - with eyes that made you wistful for her legs and legs that provoked fond memories of her long, delicate fingers. Those fingers trembled as she fished a loose cigarette from behind her raven curls and armed it between her lips. She lit the end and puffed like someone far, far more battle-scarred.
"I left him there," she breathed "My own brother. Left him bleeding out on the goddamned sidewalk," she grinned then, sickly, like a knife in her own gut. "You were right, Rob. I'm no better than the scum I came to make a story out of."
Rob thoughts about that. He grazed a hand over the stubble across his chin. His human man chin than a human man might have.
"Bob saw a goblin outside this morning," Robert muttered gruffly. "Spooky spooky! He sit and keep looking so the goblin doesn't come back."
Marta held the cigarette between two fingers, watching as the first fleck of ash threatened to break off and fall against the nape of her bare collarbone. "I don't know what to do with myself, anymore."
"When Bobby talk to the mailman she say goblins are Fake," Robert's gaze went back through the window, man eyes starting to narrow suspiciously. "But what if no, maybe? What if mailman...accomplice? To Big Goblin?"
"Tell me what to do, Rob," Marta sat up in such a sudden frenzy that she almost dropped the cigarette to make one more burn in the bedspread. "I know what I said at Union Station, and I think I still mean it. But for now - for tonight - just pretend like I'm a far dumber woman than I actually am."
Robert blinked at her. He furrowed his brow. "Bob sometimes pretend," he said. "Bob play Big Fast Car. And he pretend he Big Fast Car. And Big Fast Car can do anything."
Marta took that all in. Her delicate, slender shoulders slumped slightly and she let out a weak chuckle. "I know," she admitted. "Even a nice delusion will only leave me more disgusted with myself in the morning. I know that, Rob," she stared back at her cigarette, lost in the dance of smoke. "I think I've known that for a long time."
Robert stood from the windowsill. He was a strapping human man with all the qualities of an attractive human man - twelve feet tall, with mustaches on both sides and the appropriate amount of nipples. He was the kind of man that, when you looked at him, you thought "there's a penis on that somewhere, I bet". He had a license to kill, a license to drive, and a license that allowed him to get access to any loose cheese he could find, actually. But what Marta needed more than anything was for Robert to make use of his license...to love.
A flush of scarlet deepened across Marta's cheeks. "O-Oh Robert, what are you..?"
Robert wandered out of the main room in the middle of her sentence and stood in the nearby nook of the kitchen. Marta stiffened, slightly confused.
"Rob?" She began. "Rob, are you -?"
"Huh?!" Robert let the silence settle over his outburst before shouting again. "Huh?!?"
He couldn't take it anymore. The passion inside him, the heat in the late summer air, the fact that he was only now just realizing he was an adult human man and he'd gone his whole life without ever having any delicious snacks or meals - it was all too much. He dove for a plastic wrapped bag of bagels on the linoleum counter, but what interested him wasn't the bread. No bread could curb the hunger in him now. Robert tore into the plastic, ripping streaks into the bag and basking in the immediate gratification of the material giving way under the brute force of his teeth.
Sometime during this Marta came into the room. Her sensible silk blouse was almost fully undone, with only a few pearl buttons keeping what remained of her modesty. She leaned against the doorway and took in the raw, masculine feast taking place in front of her.
"Oh Robert -"
Startled, Robert flung the bag to the side and jumped three feet into the air. He sprinted from one end of the small nook and back, slamming his body full-force into the opposite wall in the process. He knocked into Marta while rocketing from the kitchen and leapt across the bed, sending a flurry of stray books and papers flying in the process. Finally he opened the front door and ran down the hall of the apartment complex.
Marta was left alone in his kitchen, panting for air. As Robert broke the window to the fire escape with his bare fists to continue his fleeing, she heard one more word from him. It was like the howl of a wolf at the moon. The lament of a lighthouse always seeking company it can never truly meet without danger to them both. The greatest tragedy from the man she now knew was the love of her life.
"HUH???" Robert shouted as he dropped down the fire escape ladder.
