In February of 2022, I got to accompany WVU's student radio station to Spirit Hall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where we got to record a video interview with Electronic Duo Machine Girl, who spent some time in Pittsburgh themselves.

This week, we released our next issue of the paper. We had our page editors finish their pages on Monday so we could edit them on Tuesday and get them sent out so we'd receive them on Wednesday and have them in time for Morning Buzz on Thursday.

This week was pretty tough as we had a lot of unforeseen issues on page four that took a lot of effort to fix. I just so happened to be the one to work on this page despite not being a page editor. There were still some mistakes but we got it done in time and the paper is out.

It is perfectly okay to make mistakes in this profession since there could be many people who look over your work and find no issue with it until it is published and hits the shelves. Making mistakes is part of the process and we can always fix the mistakes, when putting the paper online and we can apologize for any misspelling of names or wrong quotes and promise to fix it.

welcome to the FEM newsmagazine dialogue & opinion section spring '23 blog!

we made the (kind of hilarious) decision to make a tumblr in 2023 as a space of our own to start and facilitate conversations about topics that matter to us. as a section, we are interested in exploring questions of gender, race, class, ability and accessibility, sexuality, and other matters of identity and local and global politics from the perspective of college students at UCLA.

after 4 years of being in FEM, i can confidently say that the work and the conversations behind running an intersectional feminist publication are messier, more imperfect, and more ambivalent than what makes it into print. i cherish the opportunity to learn from and share with my fellow members of FEM and i envision this blog as a space where curiosity and radical thinking born out of experience can blossom. over the course of the next 8 weeks or so, members of dialogue will be taking over this blog and sharing their expressions.

we don't know exactly what it will look like yet, but stay tuned!

Here’s a bit of a departure from my usual art posting but I’d like to get the word out about my dear friend Edrian and his friend Angeles’s endurance performance and hunger strike for a free Palestine in Los Angeles starting today, June 17th. (More info on Edrian’s Instagram and at venerations.cargo.site)

Edrian will begin cutting out paper dolls and ribbons to reach 35,647 of each, reflecting the reported death toll of Palestinians killed by Israel’s genocide in Gaza since Oct. 7th. He will not move from the venue until he is done and do nothing aside from cutting with few exceptions made for his own physical and economic survival. In addition to that and to represent a microcosm of the suffering in Gaza and Palestine, he will be on HUNGER STRIKE until he finishes. It’s an impossible task to do alone before starving so audience participation is essential. I’m spreading the word to ask for support through participation!

You can participate in a number of ways (more detailed instructions here):

Spread the word. Word of mouth and social media sharing are crucial as this performance is being promoted pretty exclusively via word of mouth.

Donate money to Palestinian aid funds! Certain high donation amounts can help Edrian continue his endurance performance by allowing him to engage in life-giving activities like showering or socializing with a loved one, and reaching the 100k total goal allows him to end his hunger strike.

If you live in and around Los Angeles, visit the venue (800 Date Ave, Alhambra, CA 91803) There you can help him cut and show your support. ***The performance is on the second floor of the venue and there is no elevator so it is not accessible except by stairs :(

If you don’t live near LA, you can cut paper dolls and mail them to the venue address to count towards the total. (printable templates here) This is what I will be doing. It’s easy to do with any spare time you’re not using your hands. I recommend mailing them in small batches if possible to get them in on time and reduce the risk of losing mail. I also recommend including info about the count of paper dolls in each parcel (for example include a note telling the total number of paper dolls) Every small amount counts!

If you are an Art Center College of Design student or alumni, sign the petition to pressure Art Center to divest from Israel! Art Center has refused to host Edrian and Angeles for their performance, torn down their posters promoting it, and in general refused to take a stance against Israel’s genocide. As artists and human beings we must resist genocide and refuse to support institutions that side against the people.

He is also live-streaming his performance and documenting progress if you would like to show support just by being present.

I'm writing a paper on Goncharov right now and I can sooth your nerves that the difference between Gonch and whatever's happening on tiktok is not the fake media. Fake media and fake people and fake history will always and has always existed. Neither is the collective storytelling.

The difference is that we made Goncharov real by imitating a fandom for it. Like yes mass hallucinating a movie was fun and an incredible feat of collective creativity. But the *way* we created Goncharov is what will always make it special.

We, as a website, spontaneously created a perfect pastiche of fandom, one that was so identical to any other fandom behaviour it made the movie seem real.

As I quote thetwistyoucantresist in my paper, “maybe the real Goncharov was the Fandom we made along the way”.

Goncharov isnt the fake movie its the fake fandom, that's what special and unique and one of a kind

Dreamworks is out here getting me to shed tears in public over an animated goose and his robot mom. The art of a newspaper

When I talk about our student media program, I'm usually talking about the student newspaper and writing because that is where my position as entertainment critic lies, but there are many positions among our staff that require little to no writing at all.

We have videographers, graphic designers, and photographers. Many of us may even do more than one of these jobs since, at times, we may not have enough staff to cover all positions. Even I take photographs when I can and help wherever I'm needed even though my job title is entertainment critic.

Working on a newspaper takes many skills and sometimes that requires us to go out of our comfort zone and do something we aren't used to. It also promotes teamwork when some of us are unable to do certain tasks like operating a camera or drawing an editorial cartoon.

A newspaper is more than just the news or writing, but the hard work that went into creating it and anything that requires such efforts can truly be considered art.
