I know I'm a week late but I do think people are misunderstanding the point of the Anthony Bourdain quote about Kissinger
The point was never "Anthony Bourdain has good politics and is an unproblematic fave," the point is that even someone with mainstream liberalish politics who goes to Cambodia for a food tour - a, let's be honest, very bougie type of trip to be part of your job - and has a basic understanding of history and a bare minimum of human decency can come away from that bougie food tour wanting to murder Henry Kissinger with their bare hands. The point is that Henry Kissinger fucked up this country so bad the only reason he wasn't lynched decades ago is because it's on the opposite side of the world and the people who were in proximity to him never really saw what it was. The point is that if we could see firsthand what our First World politics do to the Third World we would understand that monsters walk among us and it's a cultural failing that we let them die at home at 100 years old surrounded by their friends and family.

one of the most important things terry pratchett has taught me is that it's okay to be angry. no one has ever said that to me before. he taught me that anger was an engine. that you can use that anger. that it goes hand in hand with love. he taught me to never underestimate my anger, because it's one of my strongest points. he taught me genuine anger was one of the world’s great creative forces. he taught me i shouldn't be fighting my anger, but what caused it. he himself said rage underlines everything he wrote. i never heard anger talked about so openly like that before and it's freeing, i suppose, to realize you are truly, truly not alone in your rage at the world. you never were.

i've not written poetry in years (i'm more of a novelist) but i allowed myself some cassandra thoughts (as a treat). i actually had a lot of fun with this and i'm desperate to do more with the idea in the future so we will see.
inspired obviously by my own muses, @two-bees-poetry for the brilliant contrapuntal poems about greek myth, and anne carson, specifically when she talks about cassandra's speech being split in two and her bridging of past and future!
more of my logic in the tags because i'm annoying!

The spectacle ... is not a supplement to the real world, an additional decoration. It is the heart of the unrealism of the real society.

"I thought a castle would be a suitable substitute for a home, and mandatory displays of respect would be a suitable substitute for human affection. You were treated like a queen but you were my hostage, Genny what the hell did we think was going to happen?"

the vampire armand // the vampire lestat
the text is marrying bourgeois privilege with vampire and family horror, essentially equating old and powerful vampires to landed lords who ruled their territories and exploited their subjects according to their every whim… I love these books. the vampire in literary and cinematic history is also often a landed lord but tends to be socially ostracised - here, the vampire actively participates in the social and political environment cultivated by humans and if you didn’t look very closely you probably couldn’t tell them apart. the human capacity for evil feeds and enables the vampire capacity for evil.

Akinari... was highly conscious of the extremely disparate nature of the materials he chose to use. This consciousness permitted him to assemble and adapt surprisingly eclectic sources to his own artistic ends....
──────
[In Tales of Moonlight and Rain,] Akinari has borrowed widely and self-consciously.... His art was one of transformation.
──────
Encounters, attitudes, atmospheres, outcomes experienced through the double memories of writer and reader create a newly suggestive poetic profundity.... Many of the stories involve historical personages who lend significance to the tales by their very presence there. Plots from earlier works of literature are cast in the same role; they add grandeur and depth to the narratives.
──────
Akinari [has] an ability to strengthen the evocative power of his own text by creating reverberations to earlier works he admires. Akinari's contemporary readers would be expected as well to take genuine pleasure in recognizing them. Scarcely a paragraph in any of these stories fails to echo some trace of another, earlier text.... The poetic reference attaches the story to that earlier work and connects both worlds together.
Ueda Akinari: The Past as Art, from Modern Japanese Fiction and Its Traditions: An Introduction by J. Thomas Rimer
I've said before that Bungou Stray Dogs is Asagiri's love letter to his literary antecedents, but Ueda Akinari's emergence as a character in the narrative affirms that from its conception to its execution, Bungou Stray Dogs is an homage to and Asagiri's reflections on modern Japanese literature — and that to take pleasure in the thoughtfulness with which he's reshaped his models, it's worth engaging with the sources of his art.
In the fourth dimension, anywhere and everywhere can be adjoined as long as you can see it.

I cannot believe that I sat through 27 episodes of FoF and hours and hours of angst just to be hit with an mpreg joke I am screaming
(In case it doesn't come through in the translation, depending heavily on context of course, "有了" [have (it)] can be a euphemism for pregnancy. ZYC clutching his abdomen and saying "我...我好像有了" or "I...I think I have it," and then reacting the way he did, I'm pretty sure that's the implication they were going for lmao)
