SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 119 *Australian Crater Offers Fresh Insights into Earth's History Scientists have uncovered a potential 600-kilometre-wide crater in Australia's outback, which could revolutionise our understanding of Earth's geological past. This discovery, presented at the 37th International Geological Congress in South Korea, suggests the existence of Mapix, a massive Cambrian-Precambrian impact structure. The crater's unique characteristics could provide new insights into the geological and biological evolution of our planet. The study's authors have found significant geological evidence, including pseudotachylite breccia and shock minerals like lonsdaleite, supporting the age, size, and location of this impact structure. *Perseverance Rover Discovers Striped Rock on Mars NASA's Mars Perseverance rover has spotted an unusual black and white striped rock on the Red Planet. The discovery was made during the rover's exploration of the outer rim of Jezero Crater. The rock, named Freya Castle, has a striking pattern and is unlike anything previously observed on Mars. Early interpretations suggest that igneous and metamorphic processes could have created its distinctive stripes. This finding adds to the variety of intriguing rocks discovered by the rover, which could be among the oldest or youngest ever investigated on Mars. *Blue Origin's New Glenn Completes Second Stage Hot Fire Test Blue Origin's new heavy-lift rocket, the New Glenn, has successfully completed a hot fire test of its second stage booster. This critical test at Cape Canaveral's Space Launch Complex 36 marks a key step towards the rocket's inaugural test flight, scheduled for next month. The NG-1 mission will carry the prototype Blue Ring spacecraft, designed for refuelling, transporting, and hosting satellites. The 15-second hot fire test demonstrated the integrated operation of the vehicle's BE-3U engines and various subsystems, setting the stage for future missions. www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com www.bitesz.com 🌏 Get Our Exclusive NordVPN deal here ➼ www.bitesz.com/nordvpn. The Perseverance Mars rover spotted a unique striped rock on Mars. The rock band the White Stripes disbanded in 2011 but Mars, it seems, didn’t get the memo.

The boulder-strewn field of red rocks reaches to the horizon nearly two miles from Viking 2 on Mars' Utopian Plain. Scientists believe the colors of the Martian surface and sky in this photo represent their true colors. Fine particles of red dust have settled on spacecraft surfaces. The salmon color of the sky is caused by dust particles suspended in the atmosphere. Color calibration charts for the cameras are mounted at three locations on the spacecraft. Note the blue star field and red stripes of the flag. The circular structure at top is the high-gain antenna, pointed toward Earth. Viking 2 landed September 3, 1976, some 4600 miles from its twin, Viking 1, which touched down on July 20.

Gullies and Arcuate Ridges
This observation shows gullies and arcuate ridges in a crater in the Southern Hemisphere of Mars. Arcuate ridges and gullies are found together at many places on Mars, leading some researchers to suggest that their coexistence may be a result of a single process.
Conversely, there are many locations on Mars where gullies and arcuate ridges are found alone, causing the debate about the relationship, or lack thereof, between their origins to continue. The bright regions in this image are frost, probably water frost, that is deposited and removed seasonally.
The arcuate ridges are the wavy features on the crater floor. They appear to parallel the alcove heads (upslope end) of the gullies. Arcuate ridges resemble protalus ramparts that are found on Earth. Protalus ramparts form at the bottom of snow-covered slopes when rock debris becomes separated from the slope face and accumulates downslope.
There is a mantled unit that covers the majority of the mid-latitudes of Mars that is thought to be ice-rich. This mantled unit drapes over topography and likely contains large amounts of dust, creating a dusty “snowpack.” It is unknown how arcuate ridges form on Mars, but they are thought to be a result of mass wasting of ice-rich materials, possibly sections of the mantled unit.
The gullies seen in this image exhibit a range of morphologies. The large gully in the center of the image is deeply incised with a wide alcove. The gullies on the west (left) rim of the crater have small alcoves and tiny channels. Many of the channels appear to start at one of the fine layers that can be seen along this wall . It is possible that water came from underground along these layers to form the gullies. The gully on the far left of the image extends all the way to the top of the slope. It is likely that the water that fed this gully came from one of the layers and then the slope experienced headward (upslope) erosion and collapse to extend the alcove to the crater rim.
Note: The alternating stripes on the left side of the full image are camera artifacts, not Martian features.

(Exerpt and art from JennyDrone)
The new body was beautiful. Jet black and glossy, with gleaming gold stripes around each point of articulation. The pain that the mouse had dissociated away from the front of her mind and pushed onto me for so long was gone, and her with it.
Master had gifted me tranquility I had not known since I was a small child throwing rocks into lake Sojourner back on Mars. Blissful, blank, obedient. No room to fight when the brain no longer produces cortisol or adrenaline. A drone doesn't worry, a drone just obeys.
“Come here, little Drone,” Master Vex instructed, and I made a happy beep noise and scampered over to him. His vines guided me up and pulled me to his lap.
Master Vex had given me special augments when fixing me, that not only let him speak directly into my mind, but others as well. His first floret, a digital being named Olirec, talked in my head sometimes too, and I knew him as Admin. Drone was just happy to be so loved by everyone.
Master Vex picked me up, and carried me to his bedroom. Exciting things always happened there, things that made me feel like such a good, obedient pet.
He flowed down on top of me, and I lay very still, like a good drone without any orders.
“Such a good girl you are, Jenny. Go on, squirm for me.”
I obediently began thrashing and pushing back against his grip, only to feel it tighten. Every motion was met by the reminder that he was stronger than me, in willpower and the physical. My struggle only drained my energy, made each repeated motion weaker than the last.
I moaned and beeped and whimpered as his thorns dug into the surface of my body. Artificial sensors in my limbs converted the sharp jabs into raw pleasure, pouring an ocean of submission into my brain. I could feel his approval in my head. I was such a good drone, making Master Vex so happy.
“Good drone. You're safe and bound in my grasp. Be still.”
I complied. The port on the back of my head opened as he stroked near it, and a flurry of excited beeping sound splayed from the speaker on my shoulder that was connected directly to my implant.
His vines clicked into place in my interface jack, and the blast of raw pleasure made me see in raw binary for a few seconds. Bundles of benev-alware punched through anything resembling sentience, rerouting power in my heavily altered mind, prioritizing the tidal wave of surrender.

Thank you for the tag @welcometololaland @rmd-writes @heartstringsduet

And a huge thank you to everyone who has read or will read I Was Thinking About Your Mouth. What a joy to share with you! It's a funny feeling when you finally fully upload a fic that has been in your life for months. I started writing it in my teenage bedroom when I was visiting my parents for Christmas, so it's kept me company all of this year so far. I will miss it.
One last time, I am sharing seven sentences from Chapter 5: A Thousand Times Yes, Yes Yes!, posted today. Just two emotional horny lads about to do what they do best:
It’s a great equalizer, both crying during sex. Usually it’s just the one – whoever has the vibrator inside them on the pulse setting. Though Carlos’ vision is blurred with tears and tiredness, when he lifts off TK and looks down, he sees their c*cks with razor clarity upright and aching against the soft cotton of his pajama pants and TK’s striped shorts.
A quick flick of the wrist, and TK’s c*ck is outside of the flap, straining and massive. Carlos gets to be wedded to this willy. This long, beautiful, pink penis that makes his eyes water and his hole clench and his own thick c*ck pounce into an impressive full-length of its own. Being genuinely proposed to has made Carlos hard as a rock.

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States. The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science. SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research. The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network. Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor. Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth. The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually. However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage. Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently. StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016. Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

Young durgetash drable, I'm insane . (Will be using Wynne from my durge route 💫)
NSFW! Minors DNI!!!
Tldr: a young lord gortash celebrates his new lordship with his childhood friend
Cw:/ piv, semi public sex, sex in an odd place, local 20 year olds consummate their craving for each other
The echos of the party boomed in the distance, amongst the thorny vines of a rose labyrinth Lord Enver Gortash had a craving to fill.
The moon glazed off the tall drows features, silken brown skin marred with tight peach scars. Her burgundy eyes almost looked silver by the light of the moon. Lips puffed outward, sleeves pulled below the shoulder. Seams popped against the air, taught against her skin. A deep red color turned purple by the light of the moon.
The fountain droned on as Gortash untied her bustier, kissing her breast that fell out of the loosened clothes. He took the hardened nipple into his mouth shifting to remove the rest from her torso. It pooled around her hips, revealing the frills of her underwear.
"my my, you're a blessing." He crooned stepping off of her to allow her space to maneuver out of it. She slipped her sandals off kicking the loose fabric into the brush. She seated herself back in his lap cupping his inky black hair and tilting his head up.
"I have never felt this- for anything other than blood. But you ...make me feel... Things other than the thirst for it. I thirst for something more- I think. You are an evil thing, worming your way into my mind." Wynne hummed as his hands found her thighs, cupping, squeezing and pinching the bared flesh.
She rocked her hips, grasping his hair and curling into him. His stubble sketched the sides of her cheek, lips a rosy pink and eyes glazed over. She traced his pouted lower lip, his lips were chapped.
She pushed him down amongst the side of the fountain. Her fingers nimbly lifted his cotton undershirt, kissing from his navel to sternum. His hands pushing her hips down against his, cool night air rushing around them. "How I yearn to taste your skin..."
"later on my darling, this isn't the place for that." He gasped at her cool hand slipping through his waistband. "Ah my love, certainly you are- craving this at another time."
"there is no time like the present, lording. I crave you now." Her ears twitched in anticipation "but if you are unsure..."
"no.." he paused, his voice hushed "id like- I'd love that... I too have been craving this sweet sensation... For a while. Since you grew- flourished- I've craved you. I've been patient."
"Enver- you don't know what you do to me." She closed in on his lips, his hand taught around her hips. He tasted of sweet sherry and smoke, his cologne of oak and magnolia.
His skin bloomed pink in the hazy light. Steely eyes softened to a gaze of carnal need. He shoved down his trousers. He let out a low hum pulling aside the frills of his lovers undergarments, a smile of pride at her wet folds. He kissed her lazily, pinching and squeezing her clit- a delightful volley of sighs falling from her lips.
Her hair clung to the sweat on her face, curling against her ears and the furrow of her brow. Wynne nipped at his ear, pulling at his lobe his skin bloomed colors under her not so gentle touch. She licked a stripe up his vein feeling his faint and thrumming pulse under her.
His fingers prodded at her entrance, piercing her on them. She gasped into his mouth, feeling him curl inside her.
"you will feel heavenly, I know of it. Maybe something not of this world. Tell me if it hurts- you'll let me know, right my dove?"
His touch receded, replaced with the warmth of his head. Fingers fumbling to grasp onto something, he gided her hips onto him, lips clasped into a tight kiss.
The stretch was divine.
She felt her sides tighten, cramping down around him. The pain was immaculate.
She sat back admiring the view of the lord. He was undone in the best way, hair splayed about him, hands shivering at the touch of her skin. To be embedded in something so wonderful- his eyes relaxed to the heavens.
"I am... Not going to last much." His breath was strained, feeling an ache within his core. "This is so embarrassing. I had wished it.. our first time wouldn't be so short." His chest heaved, thighs flexing under her weight.
Every throb and twitch was matched with the tightest squeeze. His hand snuck between them wet with spit to circle around her clit. The other hand cupped her chin, guiding her lips to his.
Her ears wiggled even at the softest movement of his hips, the tang of copper from his tongue and the sighs from his lips. Her own private performance, her own symphony.
"you are abseloutely delicious, defiling the little lord, your parents will have a fit when they find out."
"don't say that-" he whined "they know my heart is saved for you." His hips bucked contently into her heat.
She paused, her hips slowing.
"do you mean it...?"
"yes- I'd love.. to have you-" his voice strained, knot close to breaking.
"swear it." She rocked her hips in kind careful to not scrape his soft skin against the tile.
"I swear- I owe you my heart."
"then my beloved- may this be the first night for the rest of our lives." Her teeth closed down on his neck marking him as hers.
He shook beneath her, emptying himself into her heat, a delightful sense of saeity rushed through her body. His beautiful skin potchmarked with bruises and teeth indents. His inky black hair strewn accross his face, eyes squinted in pleasure. Envers breath was soft contented, satisfied. A smile played on his soft lips.
"you are wonderful... My assassin, my...huntress.."
"oh stop-! Don't go all sappy on me." She patted his cheek "you are ridiculous"
His laugh, light and arid hung in the night air. "unfortunately - we must separate for the night. I shall send you.. something the druids have made. We had been.. less than cautious."
"I am not sure bhaal allows his son's the gift of child rearing. But if it makes you content I shall submit to your will." Her hips ached, lifting them gingerly off of him. "You are divine lordling"
"as are you my sweet."

Why are women so marginalised by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?
Courtney Love
Barely 8% of its inductees are female. The canon-making doesn’t just reek of sexist gatekeeping, but also purposeful ignorance and hostility
Fri 17 Mar 2023 08.00 GMT
Fourth time lucky? Kate Bush on stage in 1986.
I got into this business to write great songs and have fun. I was a quick learner. I read every music magazine I could get my hands on and at 12, after digesting many issues of Creem, I decided to base my personality on Lester Bangs, the rock critic raconteur; his abiding belief in the transformative power of a great rock song matched mine. (I also obsessed over his running arguments with Lou Reed – they confounded me, but I loved it.) Artists and their songs shaped my life, my beliefs, my self-conception as a musician – Patti Smith’s growling Pissing in the River, Heart’s Barracuda, the Runaways’ Dead End Justice, which I still know every word of. But what no magazine or album could teach me or prepare me for was how exceptional you have to be, as a woman and an artist, to keep your head above water in the music business.
The magnificent Chuck D rapped: “Elvis is a hero to most, but he doesn’t mean shit to me.” I concur. Big Mama Thornton first sang Hound Dog, written for her (and possibly with her) in 1952, which later put the King on the radio. Sister Rosetta Tharpe covered it, too, hers being the fiercest version. Her song Strange Things Happen Every Day was recorded in 1944. It was these songs, and her evangelical guitar playing, that changed music for ever and created what we now call rock’n’roll.
When the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame started in 1983, you would have thought they might want to begin with Sister Rosetta, with those first chords that chimed the songbook we were now all singing from. The initial inductees were Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley; not a woman in sight. Sister Rosetta didn’t get in until the Rock Hall was publicly shamed into adding her in 2018. (She was on a US postal stamp two decades before the Rock Hall embraced her.) Big Mama Thornton, whose recording of Ball’n’Chain also shaped this new form of music? Still not in. Today, just 8.48% of the inductees are women.

The nominations for this year’s class, announced last month, offered the annual reminder of just how extraordinary a woman must be to make it into the ol’ boys club. (Artists become eligible 25 years after releasing their first record.) More women were nominated in one year than at any time in its 40-year history. There were the iconoclasts: Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper, Missy Elliott; two women in era-defining bands: Meg White of the White Stripes and Gillian Gilbert of New Order; and a woman who subverted the boys club: Sheryl Crow.
Yet this year’s list featured several legendary women who have had to cool their jets waiting to be noticed. This was the fourth nomination for Bush, a visionary, the first female artist to hit No 1 in the UK chart with a song she wrote (1979’s Wuthering Heights), at 19. She became eligible in 2004. That year, Prince was inducted – deservedly, in his first year of eligibility – along with Jackson Browne, ZZ Top, Traffic, Bob Seger, the Dells and George Harrison. The Rock Hall’s co-founder and then-chairman Jann Wenner (also the co-founder of Rolling Stone) was inducted himself. But Bush didn’t make it on the ballot until 2018 – and still she is not in.
Never mind that she was the first woman in pop history to have written every track on a million-selling debut. A pioneer of synthesisers and music videos, she was discovered last year by a new generation of fans when Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) featured in the Netflix hit Stranger Things. She is still making albums. And yet there is no guarantee of her being a shoo-in this year. It took the Rock Hall 30-plus years to induct Nina Simone and Carole King. Linda Ronstadt released her debut in 1969 and became the first woman to headline stadiums, yet she was inducted alongside Nirvana in 2014. Most egregiously, Tina Turner was inducted as a solo artist three decades after making the grade alongside her abuser, Ike.
Why are women so marginalised by the Rock Hall? Of the 31 people on the nominating board, just nine are women. According to the music historian Evelyn McDonnell, the Rock Hall voters, among them musicians and industry elites, are 90% male.
The Rock Hall’s canon-making doesn’t just reek of sexist gatekeeping, but also purposeful ignorance and hostility
You can write the Rock Hall off as a “boomer tomb” and argue that it is building a totem to its own irrelevance. Why should we care who is in and who is not? But as scornful as its inductions have been, the Rock Hall is a bulwark against erasure, which every female artist faces whether they long for the honour or want to spit on it. It is still game recognising game, history made and marked.
The Rock Hall is a king-making force in the global music industry. (In the US, it is broadcast on HBO.) Induction affects artists’ ticket prices, their performance guarantees, the quality of their reissue campaigns (if they get reissued at all). These opportunities are life-changing – the difference between touring secondary-market casinos opening for a second-rate comedian, or headlining respected festivals. The Rock Hall has covered itself in a sheen of gravitas and longevity that the Grammys do not have. Particularly for veteran female artists, induction confers a status that directly affects the living they are able to make. It is one of the only ways, and certainly the most visible, for these women to have their legacy and impact honoured with immediate material effect. “These ain’t songs, these is hymns,” to quote Jay-Z.
The bar is demonstrably lower for men to hop over (or slither under). The Rock Hall recognised Pearl Jam about four seconds after they became eligible – and yet Chaka Khan, eligible since 2003, languishes with seven nominations. All is not lost, though – the Rock Hall is doing a special programme for Women’s History Month on her stagewear ...
What makes Khan’s always-a-bridesmaid status especially tragic is that she was, is and always will be a primogenitor. A singular figure, she has been the Queen of Funk since she was barely out of her teens. As Rickie Lee Jones said: “There was Aretha and then there was Chaka. You heard them sing and knew no one has ever done that before.”
Unworthy … Chaka Khan on stage in Toronto in 2018. Photograph: Rich Fury/Getty Images for Netflix
Yet Khan changed music; when she was on stage in her feathered kit, taking Tell Me Something Good to all the places it goes, she opened up a libidinal new world. Sensuality, Blackness: she was so very free. It was godlike. And nothing was ever the same.
But for all her exceptional talent and accomplishments – and if there is one thing women in music must be, it is endlessly exceptional – Khan has not convinced the Rock Hall. Her credits, her Grammys, her longevity, her craft, her tenacity to survive being a young Black woman with a mind of her own in the 70s music business, the bridge to Close the Door – none of it merits canonisation. Or so sayeth the Rock Hall.
The Rock Hall’s canon-making doesn’t just reek of sexist gatekeeping, but also purposeful ignorance and hostility. This year, one voter told Vulture magazine that they barely knew who Bush was – in a year she had a worldwide No 1 single 38 years after she first released it. Meg White’s potential induction as one half of the White Stripes (in their first year of eligibility) has sparked openly contemptuous discourse online; you sense that if voters could get Jack White in without her, they would do it today. And still: she would be only the third female drummer in there, following the Go-Go’s Gina Shock and Mo Tucker of the Velvet Underground. Where is Sheila E – eligible since 2001?
It doesn’t look good for Black artists, either – the Beastie Boys were inducted in 2012 ahead of most of the Black hip-hop artists they learned to rhyme from. A Tribe Called Quest, eligible since 2010 and whose music forged a new frontier for hip-hop, were nominated last year and again this year, a roll of the dice against the white rockers they are forced to compete with on the ballots.
If so few women are being inducted into the Rock Hall, then the nominating committee is broken. If so few Black artists, so few women of colour, are being inducted, then the voting process needs to be overhauled. Music is a lifeforce that is constantly evolving – and they can’t keep up. Shame on HBO for propping up this farce.
If the Rock Hall is not willing to look at the ways it is replicating the violence of structural racism and sexism that artists face in the music industry, if it cannot properly honour what visionary women artists have created, innovated, revolutionised and contributed to popular music – well, then let it go to hell in a handbag.

Fun Ocean Planet Facts I love learning for my book
A water planet needs a strong magnetic field to protect its atmosphere, otherwise greenhouse gases will cause the planet to heat up over time, the ocean to boil, and vapour to escape into space via solar wind (like Venus and Mars)
Gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn, thought to lack surfaces and have a stratum of liquid nitrogen.
Although still not fully understood, ice giants like Uranus and Neptune have hot, highly compressed, supercritical water. However, the "ocean" on Neptune, might actually be liquid diamond.
There are currently five known water planets in habitable zones. Kepler-22b "Super Earth" is 2.4 times the size of Earth. It is currently unknown if it has a rocky, gaseous or liquid composition, but it does have clouds.
Kepler-453b is 60% bigger than Earth, orbiting a star 10% larger than our sun and 20% brighter. The temperature is warm enough to have an ocean and house life.
Kepler-62 has five planets orbiting a star 2/3 the size of our sun and only 1/5 as bright. At 7 billion years old it is older than our solar system and two of the planets are habitable zones and 40% larger than Earth.
HAT-P-11b is a planet the size of Neptune, making it the smallest exoplanet to have water, it sits so close to its sun in a five-day orbit, it's too warm to have an ocean, but it still has water vapour and cloudless skies.
Ganymede (Jupiter's largest moon) proves that satellites can have their own magnetic field and underground saltwater oceans.
Callisto, Jupiter's second largest moon, is equal parts rock and ice with the lowest density of any moon. Its structure is composed of an icy-rock crater exterior, a thin saltwater secondary layer, and finally an ice-rock core.
Enceladus, Saturn's sixth largest moon, is covered in a thin smooth sheet of ice, making it the most reflective body in our solar system. It also has an underground ocean, with venting plumes of water vapour escaping into space from giant fissures in its southern pole that are so big the moon looks like it has tiger stripes.
Titan, Saturn's largest moon, has the saltiest subsurface ocean of any moon. It's currently unknown if Titan's ocean is a very thin layer sandwiched between sheets of ice, or if it extends all the way down to its rocky interior. There are lakes and rivers visible on Titan's surface, but it's not saltwater, its liquid hydrocarbons (methane and ethane)
Triton, one of Neptune's moons, has active geysers that spew nitrogen into the atmosphere, and volcanic fixtures cover the icy rock surface, most likely the result of past tidal heating.
Dwarf Planet Pluto has mountains of water ice and flowing glaciers of nitrogen and methane ice. Mysterious fault lines, some hundreds of miles long, suggest that Pluto has a hidden subsurface ocean.
#research material#original story: aquarius#this is very important for worldbuilding reasons ok? I need to know how big the planet and sun are to each other#also I can give each moon its own unique look#I can have it as smooth as a pearl and god blinding#or volcanic and wrinkly as a golfball#and now I can at least confirm the colonies would be underground in the thin sandwiches ocean layer#and not on the surface as I originally imagined

HiPOD: The Case of the Martian Boulder Piles
This image was originally meant to track the movement of sand dunes near the North Pole of Mars, but what's on the ground in between the dunes is just as interesting!
The ground has parallel dark and light stripes from upper left to lower right in this area. In the dark stripes, we see piles of boulders at regular intervals.
What organized these boulders into neatly-spaced piles? In the Arctic back on Earth, rocks can be organized by a process called “frost heave.” With frost heave, repeatedly freezing and thawing of the ground can bring rocks to the surface and organize them into piles, stripes, or even circles. On Earth, one of these temperature cycles takes a year, but on Mars it might be connected to changes in the planet’s orbit around the Sun that take much longer.
