Some goon online was trying to tell me that the Stridsvagn 103 - the also affectionately named “S-tank” - was not a MBT.
And I went out of my way to find a 1970′s Swedish tank company manual to tell him he’s fucking dead wrong.
After the fact, I realized I kinda didn’t have to do that and should have just settled with a “nawh you’re wrong, numbnuts”.

Swedish S-Tank: Stridsvagn 103
In the Cold War, Sweden took the stance of armed neutrality. This meant that it had to look strong enough to deter any attack, but weak enough to not look threatening. Thus its armed forces were designed to be explicitly defensive. This carried over into the S-tank: turreted tanks are an offensive weapon, but turretless tank destroyers are a defensive one. During 1950s Sweden began a study of a…

sweden has issued a warning to its citizens to be prepared for a possible war with russia. this is based on the russian playbook of invading countries attempting to join nato. sweden has applied and is only waiting for hungary and turkey to approve for full membership.
here's why i wouldn't worry. when georgia entered talks with nato, they were unfortunately a relatively poor country that hadn't put much spending into defence and didn't have much in the way of ties to the rest of europe. that made them easy pickings for russia. the plan being that no country can join nato unless they have no conflicts within their borders and full territorial control. its why georgia got invaded and why ukraine is being invaded now.
sweden on the other hand is close to europe both geographically and politically. sweden has also feared a russian invasion for a good deal of its history as they have been at war multiple times so sweden has spent its military budget near exclusively building a modern army strategically focused on stopping russia.
their gripen fighter jet has been built so that it can take off and land from nearly back road in sweden. their stridsvagn tank is designed to be low to the ground in order to be concealable for ambushes. their coastal defences have some of the best radars in the world. and touching them will get both the EU and the americans involved.
russia can't afford another front. especially not one where they have to avoid finnish territory now that finland is a nato member. especially not one against a modern army with equipment designed to stop them flat. and especially not when ukraine is bleeding them dry of every military asset they have.
as much as i love ukraine, their military was in fairly dire straights prior to the '22 invasion and yet even having to scramble to mobilise they've managed to push russia out of kyiv, kharkiv and kherson with what is essentially nato handmedowns and old soviet donations. they're beating an army 3 times their size with whatever is found in the nato parts bin. russia has no chance of beating sweden one on one let alone still trying to capture ukraine

Abrams Tanks May Have Some Problems in Ukraine - How Serious Are They? - Technology Org
The Armed Forces of Ukraine are using a bunch of different types of Western tanks. Those include German Leopard 1 and 2 tanks, British Challenger 2 and, of course, at least 31 M1A1 Abrams tanks. All of these tanks have certain peculiarities about them and crews have to be prepared for each of these types individually. However, the Abrams main battle tank may pose the most serious problems.
Ukraine absolutely needs main battle tanks. The more the better. And the more advanced the better. However, the West lived in peace for so long that the tank reserves are not that great. NATO countries don’t have that many tanks to spare actually.
On top of that, the choices of which tanks to supply need to be made in a smart way, because Ukraine does not have any experience with the Western-designed tanks, there is no servicing or ammo supply infrastructure there.

And now the Ukrainian Ground Forces have a mish-mash of tanks, which have their own peculiarities:
The Leopard 1A5 is not only the oldest in its architecture, but also has a rifled 105 mm gun. This means that it needs special ammunition, which is not common in NATO anymore.
The Leopard 2s are the most standard, but Ukraine is getting a bunch of different versions of this tank, including 2A4s, 2A5s, 2A5s (Stridsvagn 122) and 2A6s. There are differences between these versions that need to be learned in training.
The Challenger 2 is of the same era as the Leopard 2, but it uses a rifled 120 mm gun, which also required special ammunition.
Finally, the M1A1 Abrams can share ammo with the Leopard 2, but has a multi-fuel turbine engine, instead of a regular reciprocating engine with cylinders and pistons.
Abrams tanks can burn any fuel – diesel, petrol, vodka, doesn’t matter. They are powerful and resilient. However, these gas turbine engines do need a lot of care.
Forbes writes that despite the engines in the Abrams tanks costing an unbelievable amount of money, they can succumb to dust and debris if the crews don’t maintain the filters very well. This is something crews learn during long months of training, but the Ukrainian tankmen had to learn this very quickly.
If the tank filters are not cleaned every 12 hours or so, the damage can be so severe that the engine and possibly the transmission will need to be replaced. Obviously, in a battlefield that could bring the tank to a tragic ending.
How do you clean the filters? Ukrainian Abrams crews will have to rev the tank’s engine to redline twice a day to start the pulse-jet system and blow air through the filters clearing out the dust and debris.

Even with the filters being kept up to, the Arbams will cause some issues to the Ukrainian Ground Forces. These tanks use a lot of fuel and require deep maintenance, which will have to be performed in Poland. Getting them there will not be easy either, because the Abrams is rather heavy at over 62 tonnes.
However, the effectiveness of the main battle tank mostly depends on the tactics. And if the defenders of Ukraine manage to exploit the strong sides of the Abrams well, these tanks will do a lot of damage to the Russian invaders.

Swedish government confirms that Ukrainian pilots will be trained on JAS39 Gripen aircraft
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 06/16/2023 - 20:40 in Military, War Zones
The Swedish government decided on a new support package for Ukraine, which was presented at a meeting with the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels on June 15, 2023.
This was reported by the government press service.
"The support includes contributions to funds totaling SEK 230 million (US$ 21.4 million) and allocations to the Swedish Armed Forces, in particular for the JAS39 Gripen, and a solution for the supply of donated military equipment. The total amount of this twelfth support package is approximately SEK 250 million (US$ 23 million),” the government said.
Tumblr media
In particular, the Swedish Armed Forces were in charge of introductory training for Ukrainian pilots and associated aviation personnel in the JAS39 Gripen fighter.
“The background is that the Ukrainian armed forces have expressed requests for the possibility of an operational evaluation of JAS39, since one of the most urgent measures is to strengthen the Ukrainian air defense system with a modern combat aviation complex,” the government said.
youtube
In addition, the government decided that the armed forces would implement the decision to provide military equipment to Ukraine.
It should be noted that, since 2022, Sweden has delivered a large number of different types of equipment systems, while Swedish maintenance support has been limited to the preparation of equipment for further transport to Ukraine.
Tumblr media
“However, more qualified weapons and sensor systems require a long-term supply solution, including technical support for systems, spare parts, as well as ammunition to maintain operational efficiency over time. Therefore, the armed forces intend to develop a long-term solution for the supply of qualified material systems, such as Robotsystem 70, Stridsfordon 90, Stridsvagn 122 and Archer, which were donated to Ukraine. The supply system is being created as a result of cooperation between the Armed Forces, the Department of Defense Equipment and the current Swedish industry," the government said.
In May, Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson announced the training of several Ukrainian pilots at JAS39 Gripen in response to a request from the Ukrainian side without mentioning his provision.
Tumblr media
The Ukrainian government repeatedly sought assistance from several countries, including Sweden, for fighter aircraft. The requests were made in the summer of 2022 and, in February 2023, the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, Oleksii Reznikov, expressed Ukraine's desire to have the JAS39 Gripen.

Warning for SOC book spoilers. A while back I casually asked my tank enthusiast housemate about what a real world equivalent could be for the tank near the end of Six Of Crows. We had quite a discussion about the book descriptions and while there's not a lot to go on, and no perfect fits for what it does say about the tank in the book, he came up some suggestions. Eight overall, though some are similar models. For anyone curious (or anyone interested in them as art references?) they are:
Swedish Interwar era - Landsverk L-10 & L-60 Early ww2 era - Stridsvagn m/41 & m/42
Soviet Interwar era - BT-7 & T-26 Early ww2 era - T-34 & KV-1
My 4 favourites out of those are pictured below
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I kind of leant towards picturing something simpler like the T-26 (bottom left) initially, but seeing the T-34 (bottom right) with its hatch open at the front and someone visible there just makes me picture one of the crows poking their head out of that which would be a fun visual as they trundle along 😁
