1500s MEN - PART 2
Headwear for men in the Tudor period reflected the billowy silhouette of their clothing. Hats and caps were often soft and folded, and embellished with jewels or medallions to denote social status. Furs hadn't just become popular in clothing, they also migrated to headwear. Like clothing, jewellery and other ornamentation became more and more ostentatious for those who could afford it. Ángel's parents, sister, boyfriend, and college friends came to see his painting at the art museum!
Note: The painting is "A Better World" by Peter Max, made for the 1992 "Rock for the Rainforest" concern to aid The Rainforest Foundation. I thought this type of Artwork for Ángel was fitting because he's such a sweetie. Also, I feel like his art would also be vibrant yet calming. It is stunning!
Speaking of which, the CC itself is from Strenee's "Art Series: Artwork from the 1980-2000s."
And the lot, which did have other paintings (and I didn't take screenshots of for some reason?) is by PlumbobKingdom (TSR).
Aaaaannd Ángel's handsome bespectacled friend is by the lovely @miralure :) He was also seen in this post.

Why a giraffe from Finnegan's Wake? (Midjourney)
detailed social realist photograph of (one yeastyday he strenelys trurxk.his tete in a tub to watsch the future of his fates but ere he swiftly took it out again, ... : Finnegan::0.1 Fujifilm X-T3, 18–55mm lens, , black and white, sepia, Kodak Ektachrome E100
Experimenting with photographic words on the Finnegan's Wake text produced the image above.
My explanation, a comprehensive guess, is that the Midjourney processing had limited connections with the different words of James Joyce. Midjourney then relied on the photographic words for thew subject.
This would lead to one conclusion that the style words influence the subject. There may be wildlife photography using Fujifilm cameras leading to a baby giraffe.
The /shorten command which shows important tokens provides incorrect results.
Important tokens detailed social realist photograph of (oneyeastyday he strenelys trurxk.histete in a tub to watsch the future of his fatesbut ere he swiftly took it out again, ... : Finnegan::0.1 Fujifilm X-T3, 18–55mmlens, , black and white, sepia, KodakEktachromeE100
Important tokens detailed (0.03) social (0.04) realist (0.03) photograph (0.02) of (one (0.05) yeastyday (0.06) he (0.03) strenelys trurxk.his(0.05) tete (0.05) in a tub (1.00) to watsch (0.03) the future (0.04) of his (0.02) fates (0.05) but ere (0.03) he (0.03) swiftly (0.05) took (0.03) it out (0.03) again (0.03), ... : Finnegan::0.1 (0.04) Fujifilm (0.04) X (0.01)-T3 (0.01), 18–55 (0.02)mm (0.00) lens (0.00), , black (0.00) and white (0.00), sepia (0.00), Kodak (0.00) Ektachrome (0.00) E100 (0.00) ██████████ tub █░░░░░░░░░ yeastyday █░░░░░░░░░ fates
"Black and white " are supposedly disregarded while the image is in black and white. A subject words like tub (1.00) has a relatively high weight but does not appear. The terms yeastyday (0.06) or strenelys trurxk.his(0.05) which have weight but what Midjourney interprets these are unknown.
An alternate result is :
Prompt : detailed social realist and surrealist painting with a realistic and slightly gritty style , with a strong sense of narrative ..(one yeastyday he strenelys trurxk.his tete in a tub to watsch the future of his fates but ere he swiftly took it out again, ... : Finnegan::0.1 --ar 3:2
While strange this appears a bit closer to the text and the style.

(one yeastyday he strenely trurxk. his tete in a tub to watsch the future of his fates but ere he swiftly took it out again )by the might of moses, the way water eviparated and all the guenneses had met their exodus so that ought to show you what a pentchanjeuchy chap he was! )
Finnegan’s Wake - James Joyce
ChatGPT4o explanation:
This passage from Finnegans Wake exhibits many of Joyce's signature techniques: intricate wordplay, mythological and biblical references, and a blurring of narrative levels. To fully appreciate the dense layering of meaning here, we can break it down and explore the possible interpretations at various levels: narrative, symbolic, and linguistic.
1. "(one yeastyday he strenely trurxk. his tete in a tub)"
"yeastyday": This neologism is one of Joyce’s many puns on time. The word "yesterday" is transformed into "yeastyday," which suggests a connection to fermentation and growth, as yeast causes bread to rise. Time in Finnegans Wake is not static but bubbling, expanding, and fermenting—a living, ongoing process rather than a fixed past. The "yeasty" day, therefore, implies a day in which potential is still brewing, fitting with the theme of recurrence and renewal that permeates the text.
"strenely trurxk": This is likely a distortion of "sternly struck" or "struck strongly," suggesting a forceful or deliberate action. The misspelling highlights the instability of language and action in the Wakean world. It evokes the idea of fate taking a decisive turn, with the protagonist (perhaps HCE) taking action with some intensity or severity.
"tete in a tub": "Tete" is French for "head," and the phrase "head in a tub" could be read as an allusion to the act of immersing oneself in water, often a symbol of cleansing, rebirth, or seeking clarity. In this context, it could evoke the character's attempt to see the future or understand his fate by looking into the water. This parallels the ancient practice of divination or scrying, where one peers into water to glimpse visions of the future.
2. "(to watsch the future of his fates but ere he swiftly took it out again)"
"watsch": This misspelled word likely combines "watch" and the German "Wasser" (water), reinforcing the idea that the character is watching something in water. It could also be a pun on "watch" and "catch," suggesting the fleeting and elusive nature of what he hopes to glimpse.
"the future of his fates": This phrase underscores the theme of destiny and foreknowledge. The plural "fates" suggests the multiplicity of possible futures—Joyce often presents time as non-linear, with multiple possibilities coexisting. Here, the character’s action suggests a desire to control or understand these futures but also his quick retreat, indicating that the knowledge is too overwhelming or impossible to hold onto.
"swiftly took it out again": The swift retraction could indicate fear, surprise, or the impossibility of comprehending the vision he receives. It could be interpreted as the futility of trying to understand fate or the future—perhaps an acknowledgment of the inherent limitations of human perception and the unknowability of the future. The swiftness of the movement also mimics the transience of moments in time, underscoring the ephemerality of both time and understanding.
3. "by the might of moses"
This phrase introduces a biblical reference to Moses, specifically alluding to his parting of the Red Sea, one of the most famous miraculous events in the Old Testament. Moses symbolizes a figure who wields divine power, particularly over water, which parallels the character’s experience with the tub of water in this scene. The reference to Moses also emphasizes themes of exodus, transformation, and revelation.
In Finnegans Wake, biblical references are often refracted through the text's chaotic, cyclical world, and this allusion could reflect the character's attempt to perform his own "miracle" by seeking revelation in water. However, unlike Moses' triumph, his efforts are less successful or conclusive, perhaps reflecting the limitations of human agency in the face of fate.
4. "the way water eviparated and all the guenneses had met their exodus"
"water eviparated": The word "eviparated" is a playful distortion of "evaporated," suggesting the disappearance of water. This sudden evaporation could be linked to the biblical event of Moses parting the sea, where water is momentarily displaced. However, the humor lies in how Joyce transforms this into a mundane phenomenon—water disappearing through natural evaporation rather than divine intervention. The loss of water could symbolize the character's failure to maintain his vision of the future.
"guenneses": This is a portmanteau of "guinness" (the Irish stout) and "Genesis" (the first book of the Bible). The pun suggests a merging of the sacred and the profane, a hallmark of Joyce's style. "Guinnesses" here could represent both physical beverages (perhaps referencing the characters' drinking habits) and the grand beginnings or creation narratives found in religious texts. The "exodus" of the Guinnesses could then refer to the disappearance of drink, perhaps in the context of a party or pub scene, or it might symbolically represent the end of an era or the departure of life itself (as alcohol evaporates or is consumed).
5. "all the guenneses had met their exodus"
Exodus: The biblical allusion continues, referencing the departure of the Israelites from Egypt in the Book of Exodus. This could signify the mass departure or loss of something important, whether it’s the drink (Guinness) or, symbolically, the life force or creative energy associated with the "yeastyday" earlier. It also evokes themes of liberation or escape—both physically (the Israelites leaving slavery) and metaphysically (the character attempting to glimpse the future but retreating).
This exodus of the "Guinnesses" may also allude to the fleeting nature of pleasure or human pursuits. Just as the Israelites left Egypt, escaping bondage, perhaps the disappearance of the Guinness represents the transience of earthly indulgences. There is a movement away from the everyday, from physical satisfaction to something more profound or unknown.
6. "so that ought to show you what a pentchanjeuchy chap he was!"
"pentchanjeuchy": This neologism is one of Joyce's dense portmanteau words, and it carries multiple possible meanings. The base of the word seems to be "penchant" (a tendency or liking for something), while "chanje" could refer to "change." The suffix "jeuchy" could evoke "Jeremiah" (a prophet from the Bible, associated with lamentation), or simply a playful sound. The entire word suggests that the character is prone to change, inconsistency, or has a tendency toward prophetic insight or vision.
Given the context, this character might be someone who is fickle or prone to flights of fancy, perhaps even with prophetic tendencies but ultimately unable to commit or follow through. The word emphasizes his complexity and contradictions—he seeks to know the future (as prophets do), but he’s too easily shaken by what he sees to remain steadfast.
"chap": This colloquial term softens the characterization, bringing the larger-than-life, almost mythical figure back down to earth. He’s both an epic figure (with a connection to Moses, divination, and fate) and a regular guy, someone we might meet in any ordinary context, much like HCE.
Synthesis and Critical Perspectives:
This passage plays with grand themes of fate, prophecy, and the limits of human understanding, all couched in Joyce’s typical blend of highbrow allusion and lowbrow humor. The character’s attempt to glimpse the future is comically undercut by the mundane reality of water evaporating and the disappearance of Guinness, a subtle commentary on the gap between human aspiration and the constraints of physical reality.
Psychoanalytic readings might focus on the tension between the character’s desire for foresight (to control or understand fate) and the unconscious fear or reluctance that leads him to quickly withdraw from what he sees. The evaporation of water could symbolize the elusiveness of psychic clarity or the vanishing nature of dreams and aspirations.
Postmodern interpretations could emphasize the play on language and meaning, with Joyce deliberately undermining any clear-cut interpretation by blending mythological, biblical, and everyday references into a fluid, ambiguous whole. The quick evaporation of water might suggest the impermanence of meaning itself in a world where symbols and stories constantly shift.
Theological and biblical analyses would draw attention to the interplay of sacred texts with Irish life (the Guinness), pointing out how Joyce weaves together a parody of religious revelation with mundane experiences, highlighting the secularization of spiritual concepts in modernity.
Ultimately, the passage reflects Joyce’s exploration of the recurring human quest to understand fate or divine the future, but it also mocks this effort through the character’s brief, fearful retreat, leaving the future as fluid and unknowable as the rest of Finnegans Wake.
