POSTCARDS FROM MOROCCO 🇲🇦 Our first morning in Morocco was spent walking on the promenade of Tangier. It was before 9am and I've barely had my Starbucks coffee, but I've been hit on, catcalled and invited into strangers' cars countless times already. The disproportionate ratio of men and women on the streets was something I immediately noticed. As a woman I've never felt so uncomfortable and unsafe in my entire life than in Morocco. You can directly feel the gender inequality of the culture and the street harassment is horrific. I've been told to either (a) ignore it or (b) take it as a compliment (c) that I'm too sensitive. (a) you can only ignore kissy noises and "ah so nice" for so long before you want to punch someone in the face. The other day in the Marrakesh medina I was crying from rage. How can it not bother you? (b) being reduced to a sack of meat for the consumption of strange men on the street is not a compliment. It's a power play - I'm defenseless and I'm being disrespected. I'm being denied my freedom, safety, dignity and humanity. (c) Yes, I am aware that I freely chose to visit a Muslim country and I carefully curated my clothing to be respectful and modest. But, I am allowed to be angry. I am allowed to be furious by how my sisters are being treated around the world. I am allowed to be frustrated by the harassment I am receiving purely for being female. I am allowed to be fucking exhausted. You know what's the worst of all? If my boyfriend was accompanying me, I would not have experienced this. Because, they respect my boyfriend more than me. I matter. Undervaluing

Nowadays, catcalling is indeed one of the inflating scourges in our society. It actually affect one's self esteem and tend to degrade as well as belittle someone. Moreover, existence of catcalling in both males and females were not surprising anymore, since this is really happening everytime. Nevertheless, the sad thing about catcalling is that even though it is already acute, many people still don't see it as a big deal as they continue to catcall regardless of the person's gender.

As I read different articles regarding the timely issue, a saying stated by Elise Holand, PhD candidate at University of Melbourne, caught my attention. She aforesaid, "We want women to be recognized as somebodies rather than somethings." Since even though catcalling exists in both sex, women are still the one who gets the highest amount of objectification in all aspects.

In addition, Jonathan Pettygon, a blogger, also drew my attention with his statement, "Whether he is alone, with a group of other men or even with a girl, someone will likely to catcall him." Clearly delivering the message to everybody that even men could possibly experience catcalling and you know what? The downside part of this is the fact that catcalling men were totally unrecognized in our society. The world should learn to notice that even males are prone with this kind of issue in our community.

Substantially, everyone should know that catcalling would never give a positive feeling to anyone even if someone's argue that it can somehow make the victim flattered as there is someone who can appreciate his or her looks and figures. That's so provocative right? Catcalling would never be considered as a compliment.

Never.

I personally beg to disagree with that kind of stand for the reason that no one would surely like to experience impudence. Catcalling delivers disrespectful language to everyone so it must be stop. We can show our appreciation to someone's physical appearance without catcalling, objectifying nor wolf-whistling him or her.

Let's put in our minds that a wrong action would still considered inaccurate even though almost everybody were doing it. Modern era would never be an excuse; not because something is timely, it is already valid. Take note of that. Above all, do what is right.
