Lately I’ve been leaning towards discovering new music through radio and music video stations, as they do a lot more in helping me find new music than streaming services ever did.
I think the problem is that streaming’s algorithmic nature leads to locking yourself into a comfort bubble with the same old playlists with the same old recommendations. “Made For You” playlists further lock you into that box as long as the songs get more streams.
Meanwhile, I watched Rage recently (the Australian equivalent of MTV) and it got me hooked on Reel Big Fish and Little Simz, two amazing artists I had no interest in before because I was never made aware of their music. I rediscovered The KLF through listening to Radio X on the RadioGarden app. Two mediums of listening to music known for constant repeats of popular songs have done more for me (in terms of finding music) than Spotify has ever done.
At the end of the day, all three still want your money, but Spotify wants your money by locking you in your comfort zone and all your “favourite playlists”.

Critical Role launching Beacon is a fantastic step for both fans and the CR family. They get the full amount of the subscription cost added to the production coffers and full control over their IP. No more worries about being lost to the algorithm or playing tone police to stay on the good side of another company’s terms of service (which can change on a whim).
Plus, their amazing team can focus on creating new and exciting programming for all of us Critters. It also gives them a way to foster the Critter community on a site they maintain and reward them for being fans (first looks, event notifications, shop discounts).
They’ve figured out how to keep the sub price low (same as a Twitch or YT channel sub) and aren’t going to stop posting current content on those platforms (which some other creators tried to do when they attempted this).
It’s clear they put a lot of work into this and are very excited for what they can do going forward.
Not only is this a smart move on Critical Role’s part, it’s the right one.

"Like everyone else in the modern world, large parts of my life have become increasingly digital, sometimes against my will. The result is a very mixed bag. Some things have improved, and others have definitely degraded. I constantly wrestle with the balance of these changes, and I try to be mindful about them. But this is the hardest to do where it intersects with my work.
I’ll start with streaming. I did not come up on streaming. I’m in my 40s, so by the time I was buying music of my own it was the early 90s and I had cassette tapes. Then came the CD, then mp3 players, then streaming and cell phones. The last change has affected how I interact with music the most. Since streaming became the norm, I listen to music a lot less. I know my age is a factor here, but streaming has killed a lot of my desire to explore. I still love to hear new music, but I’m basically 100% recommendation based at this point. I never browse platforms like Spotify. In theory, having all of recorded music available at once, for a monthly fee that’s less than what a single album cost 30 years ago, would be a feeling of abundance, of infinite possibilities. But the actual result is just being overwhelmed. Sifting through hundreds of thousands of tracks that aren’t quite doing it for me just sounds exhausting. So I don’t use it very much. I can’t remember the last time I actively searched for new music on it. And passive things like algorithmic suggestions and playlists have not filled the gap.
I also work in music, so I’m always suspicious of how much that colors my opinion. But I feel the same way about film these days. I used to really stay on top of movies and shows. Since the streaming model has taken over, I have that same overwhelmed, agitated feeling I get from the music platforms. Scrolling through all those films and shows, with their auto-playing trailers and automated recommendations, just makes me turn the tv off. So I rely entirely on recommendations here, too, and I have no desire to explore.
It’s been strange watching former hobbies and sources of joy turn into chores, or even things I actively avoid. I realize that a lot of people will feel the exact opposite here, though. I don’t think this is unanimous by any means. But this is how it has turned out for me, and it has made what I do for a living feel really strange. Because I no longer enjoy these platforms very much as a user, releasing work has become increasingly dissonant. How do you make things for platforms you don’t personally enjoy? I’ve never had this issue before now. I liked buying albums. I liked going to record stores, where they had curated selections, and hunting for something that I wanted to take home with my very limited funds. So the idea of creating something that would be packaged as an album, that someone else might discover in a shop and decide to take home, was really motivating. It served as a mental model. And while I liked going to shows sometimes, they weren’t what made me want to write songs. I was all about records and the process of finding them. I cherished my tiny little collection, and the idea of being a part of someone else’s was really cool to me.
Watching a number occasionally go up on an app I personally try to avoid isn’t quite the same." - Ben Cooper/Radical Face's blog entry Investment Strategies [x]

Y’all I’m so fucking tired of people trying to sell us things , it’s all we ever see. sponsored content, ad spon segments on YT, ads below the fucking video, ads above the title, ads IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR VIDEO, unskippable ads, Instagram shop, Facebook market place, tiktok shop, algorithm ads, sims shop IN THE GAME, Pop up ads, paywalled articles, pay walled videos, freemium apps, the “for just 99 cents you can level up” except it’s never JUST 99 cents because they’re targeting the addiction prone, the ads in between every single level of your game.
ADS, ADS , ADS
This capitalistic dystopia is sickening and I’m so tired of people trying to sell things to me.

Sabrina Carpenter's streaming numbers are misleading because Spotify automatically plays her music for you ... it's nice when the label is backing you.

NME article x
I've seen tweets about how Sabrina Carpenter earns the biggest streaming day on Spotify, but it's not organic when Spotify automatically plays her music no matter what genre you're listening too.

hey in case any of you needed to see the so-called "horny confession" from a first person POV, it, uh.
it CERTAINLY HITS DIFFERENT, with the remarkably intense eye contact of it all.
this popped up recommended to me from this channel I had never seen before, and if I told you I've seen it like five times now, that'd be an underestimation

i've been seeing comments that rly annoy me abt crittikal, there's a lot of people saying he's being irresponsible for not evacuating since he lives in florida and how he has an ~impressionable audience and is being a bad influence~ by not doing so and it's so ignorant because he's literally. not in an evacuation zone. if you don't have to evacuate you actually Shouldn't because you're clogging up the highways and using resources meant for people who Are genuinely in danger and Need to be evacuate. ppl are pointing to his power going out as proof that he's lying abt where he lives and its like bruh it can be Storming where you are while you're still not Actively In a Hurricane. it's a giant storm it's gonna be raining everywhere but only certain places are gonna be actually in the war path of this thing.
there were also some comments that really irked me about how he's "sitting in his mcmansion doing nothing" during the hurricane and im like?? first of all i've never seen his whole house but it certainly doesn't look like a mcmansion, it looks like a regular ass house to me. he's never been one to flaunt his wealth around at least from what i've seen. secondly what do you want him to do? do you want him to go fight the hurricane? do you want him to personally go out and rescue people? because that kinda contradicts your earlier statements about how he should be running away from it, he can't be evacuated while also going down the river in a boat rescuing people.
and then the biggest criticisms were when he was streaming while his power was out running off a generator. some people were like "that's insensitive" but when asked How it's insensitive they couldn't really give an answer other than "there's people dying" and that logic makes me roll my eyes cause it's like, there's people dying everywhere all the time. it's like saying "why are you having fun right now, there's people starving in africa" i don't get your point. this guy is literally just doing his job. i think it takes some dedication and is kinda funny to be like "welp back to the old grind" when ur power is down. like streaming off a generator is just a funny situation it's not insensitive for a guy to keep doing his job when his power is out i'm
