I wonder if there's fanfiction out there of the jetpack lady ad.

For those of you who don’t know this ad and are new to Tumblr, jetpack lady is from the ad on Tumblr’s website about the Jetpack app. 

One ad shows her steepling her fingers together in a mock evil way, saying, “My junior copy writer has been...dealt with for correcting my grammar”.

"Magistrate" is going to refer to judge, as lawyers are not a thing. (Edit: Oh, apparently they've become an expensive thing in the Gate recently. That's new.) -

Astarion was definitely working in a judge capacity: "A gang of vagrants, a tribe of wandering 'Gur', took issue with a ruling I'd made." | "A Selûnite necklace, if I'm any judge. And I am. [laughs]" -

Apparently judges in Baldur's Gate are chosen from amongst the ranks of the Patriars (because of course they are) -

Human nobility is closed ranks, especially in the Gate. The only non-human Patriar family in existence is the dwarven Shattershield family. You might however, find an elf who married into one. That would be permitted, if looked down upon (you're either marrying below your station to a commoner, or your spouse's Evereskan noble house is liable to die of shame). -

In the Realms, a the offspring of an elf and a half-elf is classified as an elf mechanically. Half-elf + elf = elf | Half-elf + human = human. | Half-elf + half-elf = half-elf.

So for Astarion to be asked to preside over cases in the courts and be allowed to make rulings he has to have human ancestry tying him to a Patriar family - most likely a human grandparent. That would lead to the question of whether the elven relatives were from a noble house (awkward: the Evereskan nobility are traditionally classist as hell and do not like humans), or just random commoners (human nobles marrying random elven servants has been known to occur).

OR

That charlatan background predates his unlife and he somehow lied his way into making people think he was a member of a Patriar family. Although he originally had the noble background, so... who knows. (Although that could technically indicate new money, that would bar him from being a judge, as that's not a Patriar.)

it fascinates me how often a choice of first or - gasp - second person storytelling can create so much derision and discourse. having preferences is fine obviously, and as a writing choice it Does matter, because all writing choices matter. i don't really... notice?? anymore??? or like, i DO notice, but more in a "what information will the narrative give me access to" kind of way.

i know second person especially can be jarring if you're not used to it, because it's "he would not fucking say that" but for yourself. but it's also like... so many song lyrics have "you" and "i" and to me they're just. a story that exists separate from me. (to the degree lyrics exist to me at all as something other than Sounds that are part of a music piece, but that's the audio processing disorder/'did not grow up with english as a first language and never bothered to decode lyrics' of it all speaking)

i suspect a lot of derision towards first person narratives comes from a derision towards the genres in which it is a staple, rather than that it's somehow uniquely bad. there's really not much difference between a first person perspective and limited third person perspective??

Not to target anyone in particular, but you guys focus way too much on Zagreus when it comes to anything relating to Melinoe. I get this a lot on my posts - people mentioning or bringing up Zagreus when he doesn't really fit in. Or like, the tons of posts or comments (not just this website but in other places) based on this idea that Zagreus is gonna show up and like, save Melinoe from her problems or whatever.

Like Melinoe is a child soldier who saved her brother from being cubed and by her own admission flawed in the sense of her own self-righteous/arrogance. If Zagreus so much as tries to be paternalizing towards her she will rebuff him so hard

the things is, hyde is an embodiment of jekyll’s evil. he is jekyll, just without the parts that make hime good. and isn’t that so scary? the person who takes over your body sometimes, who does these awful things - he may give himself another name, but he’s still you. i think that’s what makes jekyll and hyde so interesting and so devastating to me, the thought of jekyll having that crushing realisation that he is hyde, and hyde is him. and he can’t undo that
