Flash Fic Feb, Day 2

Day 2, written on Day 3

Prompt: "I sit beside the fire and think/of people long ago/and people that will see a world/that I will never know."

He looked across the table from the empty chair. To the place his wife had sat for the last seven years. To the place where someone else would be coming home.

He hadn't slept after their conversation last night. He didn't know how to feel. He was pretty sure that was normal. His wife didn't know how she felt, either, for the last seven years, and who knows how long before that.

Would his wife still be his wife when they came home? What would they be instead? A husband? Did he have a husband now? He wasn't sure he was ready for that. His spouse? He said it a few times, out loud, in the empty room, to see how it tasted. He could fit the word out of his mouth, at least. Well, another conversation he and they would have to have, he supposed.

Unless they didn't want to be his spouse anymore, either. Or unless he didn't want to be theirs. Then they'd never have to talk about it again.

He married a woman because he loved her. He wondered if she'd married him because it was the next thing to do. If she'd believed she was who she'd shown him to be. Or if it was another way of masking, of fitting in, of trying to get along while she figured out she wasn't "she" at all. That must have been hard for them.

…Etched into the leg of the prep table in the kitchen was the most beautiful symbol. It wouldn't peel off. It couldn't be copied. However, the saw could go through the wood above and below the rune.

Reflecting on that moment that might have been the straw that broke the camel's back. Mom always said not to be so impulsive. You would think offering to replace the table would have been enough...

Lost ‘holy grail’ film of life in Brazil’s Amazon 100 years ago resurfaces

Documentary from 1918 that has been hailed as a classic emerges from depths of Czech archive

A long-lost Amazon documentary described as “the holy grail of Brazilian silent cinema” has been rediscovered nearly a century after it went missing.

Amazonas, Maior Rio do Mundo (Amazon: Longest River in the World)was stolen from the original director, Silvino Santos, shortly after it was made in 1918. Just over a decade later, it had completely disappeared. The film resurfaced earlier this year in a Czech archive and was identified by specialists in Italy and Brazil.

“It’s basically a miracle,” said Sávio Stoco, the Brazilian expert on Santos who confirmed the discovery. “We didn’t have the slightest hope that this work would one day be found.”

A Portuguese-born cinematographer who spent most of his life in the Amazon, Santos was one of the main non-fiction film-makers of early 20th century Brazilian cinema. He is best remembered for his 1922 documentary No Paiz das Amazonas (In the Country of the Amazons), which experts read as an attempted remake of his lost production.

In the interest of challenging myself to new things, I signed up for Storytelling Collective's April Daily Poem challenge. I am not a poetry person! This despite my partner having an actual degree in (form) poetry. Anyway it's only 14 days right, I am strong, I can do this. It's good to learn new things!

This year StoCo themed their prompts around an upcoming album for an artist I've got no connection with, so I went and made a Carly Rae Jepsen song title generator to use instead.

Anyway! I am being brave and I'll just share them here? I cannot promise they'll be good but that is what learning is. Anyway posting here the next day for 'em.

It's *easy* enough to write a formula or code, that kind of language as math, to produce some feeling|energy|result|user outcome, plotting out the branches of a story's webb'd road. And it's not as if this particular mode of folding words so they select [value] from [a known table of action and emotion] is a language thing so completely ~unknowed~.

Though it's not so bad to read a sestet rhyme scheme, CDCDCD, and recognise grey. Other options deliver soft mint, sage green. To find things, however tenuous, that may allow the mind a structure or things that seem familiar enough that it invites one to play.

El proyecto Magneuron y las nanopartículas magnéticas en las células controladas a distancia

Bajo el título “Cómo hacer crear neuronas con imanes y nanopartículas“, descubrimos tesoros. La cosa se presenta bajo el pretexto de ayudar a los enfermos de Parkinson, y las reformas de las leyes sobre bioética harán el resto. En particular, se nos dice que:

El proyecto MAGNEURON pretende desarrollar una nueva tecnología de activación magnética de las funciones celulares para tratar la enfermedad de Parkinson. El concepto innovador de nuestra tecnología consiste en controlar a distancia el comportamiento de las células mediante nanopartículas magnéticas biofuncionalizadas.

Las nanopartículas son objetos muy pequeños, en el rango de los nanómetros, generalmente conocidos por ser nocivos. Al unir a su superficie biomoléculas específicas, es posible interactuar con moléculas celulares para dar señales específicas a las células.

Mediante el uso de nanopartículas magnéticas, es posible utilizar dispositivos magnéticos para actuar sobre ellas a distancia y desencadenar respuestas celulares.

El principio de esta tecnología consiste una reprogramación celular con un objetivo muy loable: curar. Pero ¿qué impediría que se utilizara en otras circunstancias? Cabe destacar que las llamadas células aumentadas son controlables a distancia (por control remoto).

Es una herramienta magnética que se comunica con las nanopartículas magnetizadas. En nuestro entorno, ¿podría esta herramienta estar representada por las antenas 5G, que nos introducirían de forma abrupta y brutal en el mundo del Internet de los Humanos?

Los científicos de la Universidad de Washington esperan que en el futuro se produzca una mejora significativa de esta tecnología de comunicación cerebro-cerebro para enviar información más compleja de una persona a otra. Andrea Stoco señala que “Internet es una forma de conectar ordenadores, y ahora puede ser una forma de conectar cerebros.”

¿Qué es el sigilo iPSCs que aparece en el dibujo de Magneuron?

En un artículo publicado en Science en febrero de 2008, Yamanaka afirma que “el método de transformar genéticamente las células con ayuda de un virus no causa problemas de tumores, lo que podría abrir el camino hacia un uso terapéutico para la regeneración del tejido.” Wikipédia

Esta afirmación es aterradora en el contexto actual. Y como Wikipedia no daba ninguna referencia sobre el artículo de Science, aquí está el resumen de una publicación mRNA-Based Genetic Reprogramming escrita esta vez en 2018:

El descubrimiento de que las células cutáneas ordinarias pueden transformarse en células madre pluripotentes mediante la expresión forzada de factores definidos ha despertado la esperanza que tratamientos regenerativos personalizados basados en material inmunológicamente compatible derivado de las propias células del paciente podrían realizarse en un futuro no muy lejano.

Un obstáculo mayor en la utilización clínica de las células madres pluripotentes inducidas (iPSCs) ha sido inicialmente presentado por la necesidad de utilizar vectores virales de integración para expresar los factores que inducen un perfil de expresión génica embrionaria, lo que conlleva una alteración potencialmente oncogénica del genoma normal. Varios sistemas de reprogramación “no integradores” se han desarrollado durante la última década para resolver este problema. Flash Fic Feb, Day 1

Written on Day 2, Posted on Day 3.

Day 1 Prompt: "Still round the corner there may wait / A new road or secret gate."

It was much too busy for this time of year. For this time of night, come to that. June 23rd? It felt like December 23rd. Jerry was in a foul mood, Ever since the sun had gone down, some weirdos had come out of the woodwork. One guy had painted himself blue and only spoke to the cashier in cooing noises.Another person wanted to pay for a sizeable book purchase, including at least one extremely rare volume, with a gold coin. Coins weren’t Jerry’s specialty, but if the piece the customer put on the counter was genuine, it would be worth 4 grand, easy. But Jerry had no way of knowing whether it was genuine or not, so he refused. And on and on like that.

So when Karla’s voice came over the ludspeaker, saying “Manager to the fantasy section, please,” Jerry thought, “What is it now?” He made his way through the throng of people to the back of the store. Karla was just staring at the wall that divided the bookstore proper from the receiving and storage bay. To Jerry’s irritation, Stan was back there, too. Just staring. “Stan, if you’re here, who’s minding the espresso machine?”

Stan looked over his shoulder, looking at the line of apparently endlessly patient line of customers. “This is more important, I think,” Stan said in his slow way. Jerry never knew if it was thoughtfulness or stupidity, but the man knew how to make a cappuccino.

Karla said, “We need you to settle something for us. That door…has it always been there?”

Jerry blinked. “What?”

Karla pointed. “That door. Right there. Have we always had a door there?”

“Of course we have. That goes to Receiving. You’ve both been through there a thousand times. We don’t have time for—“

“No, not the receiving door. The receiving door is beige. I mean the one sort of next to Receiving. The gray primer-colored one.”

Jerry squinted and winced through a flash headache. Then he realized which door Karla and Stan were talking about, and his irritation grew. “Of course it’s always been there. It’s a door. They don’t just grow out of walls.”

“I remember…” Stan paused. “I remember the door being there forever. But I don’t remember…remembering that…yesterday.” He shook his head and went back to making coffee.

Karla said, “If it’s always been there, what’s behind it? Stan and I have been arguing about it.”

“It’s a storage closet. That’s where we keep the…” Jerry trailed off. This was ridiculous. This was his store. 10 years he’d been doing this. He knew what was behind this door. That headache just made him forget for a second.

A man, very tall and very very thin, rested a gentle hand on Jerry’s shoulder. “Excuse me. Do you have any Tennyson? A hilarious man. I’m quite overdue for a re-read.”

Karla shook her head, like she was trying to clear it, and said, “Of course. Come this way.”

Jerry stared at the door for a moment longer. Then another customer required his attention, and it slipped his mind. After all, it had always been there.

The rest of the evening was insanely busy. The cashiers kept asking Jerry to approve transactions in unusual currencies, things no policy could cover. He found himself saying yes to as many as he could, and he found himself glad for doing so. Some were straight book swaps. He was surprised by the titles people were willing to part with. Apparently he traded a pretty good edition of Butler’s Parable of the Sower for “one perfect song in perpetuity,” whatever that meant. He just knew he wanted to go to karaoke later.

The bookstore normally closed at 10 on weekends, but closing seemed unthinkable. Until midnight the customers kept them all busy with strange requests. He thought he heard one customer in the café ask for a cup of tears. When Stan replied that he didn’t have any, the customer happily ordered an oat milk latte instead.

Then, the lines grew shorter. Fewer and fewer people required Jerry’s attention. Then the last customer left with their purchase (an adult coloring book and seven copies of the same edition of War and Peace—Jerry hadn’t even known they had that many. He hadn’t sold that many copies of that book in the whole time he’d had the bookstore).

And the place was empty.

Jerry, Karla, and Stan cleaned up, exhausted. There was something slightly different about all of them, in ways Jerry couldn’t explain and would soon forget to notice. As they did a final walkthrough of the book floor, something caught Jerry’s attention, something about the back wall, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. “Hey, Karla?” he called. “Do you member why you called me back here earlier?”

Karla joined him and took a long look at the back wall. “Didn’t I need you to get something from Receiving?”

Jerry hesitated. “Yes, that must be it.” He looked at the beige door. Something was bothering him about it still.

As they all left the store together, Jerry said, “Hey, I know it was a long night, but is anybody interested in karaoke? I have a song I want to try out.”

To his surprise, they all agreed.

Juliana é uma menina muito inteligente, adorável, gostava de ir à escola e era bastante orgulhosa dos seus cabelos cacheados, pois todos seus familiares comentavam que é tão bonito quanto o da sua mãe. Na escola, é sugerido que ela prenda seus cabelos para ficar mais bonita. No entanto, por ser diferente das outras meninas, não era popular na escola.

Jujuba é como ela mais gostava de ser chamada por seus amigos e familiares, em um dia, ao sair de casa em seu caminho para escola, não entendia porque tantos olhares estranhos sob ela. Assim, ela começou a pensar e se questionar o que deveria estar acontecendo, portanto, seguiu seu caminho para escola imaginando o que poderia ter de errado com ela.

Ao chegar na sala, a professora propôs a brincadeira do espelho, onde as crianças tinham que se olhar e relatar suas características físicas. Todas as meninas elas eram parecidas, tinham os cabelos loiros e muito lisos tirando da Juliana, que por outro lado, era bem diferente delas. Na vez de Jujuba, ao falar sobre seus cabelos, seus olhos e sua cor, se sentiu maravilhada.

Percebeu que todos são diferentes e que cada um possuí uma característica única o que torna a pessoa ser como é. No caminho de volta para casa, os olhares continuaram, mas ela entendeu quer ser diferente é o ideal, visto que cada um possui a sua própria identidade.
