Ravenel's Stinkhorn 》 Phallus ravenelii
So many stinkhorns! I've only ever seen them in one specific flowerbed on campus but they are thriving there.
A couple had already gone, well... flaccid. But I picked one apart and found some goo! Beneath the outer layer of the volva is a clear, gelatinous substance that seems to be unique to the Phallaceae family.
They also have a unique stipe called a receptaculum that is hollow all the way through the hole at the tip of the cap. It's quite easy to see how this genus got its name.

Good (Mushroom) Morning!
What I did see was this Phallaceae, commonly known as a Stinkhorn mushroom, (and probably some other names too...) According to PictureThis, one of the most useful apps on my phone, Stinkhorns come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
I went down by the creek this morning because I heard predator/prey sounds there before dawn. I was up before dawn because Bobo, our Great Pyrenees dog, broke out during the thunder storm and I went out to lock him in his stall, where he was happy enough to go. (He hates storms.) I wanted to see if one of my Muscovy ducks was the victim in the scuffle that ended with some squeaks or squeals of…

Hi people!!!
@thunder-wolf64 has come up with a brilliant idea:
Tumblr media
(Ooo that is a cool scug. I have an idea >:3 What if a bunch of us made mushroom/fungi based scugs and they all lived together in a colony? I think that would be neat. we could put them all together in a hashtag or something)
(Also inspired by the mushroom scug ocs of @confituredekaki and @saffronstoats!)
I obviously love their idea, because it’s mushroom related, so it’s mushroom scug time everybody!!!!! Make a slugcat inspired by a mushroom or other fungi, and tag your art #scugshroom colony! :D
When designing your mushroom-inspired Slugcat, don’t just look at the colour of your mushroom, also consider things like size and shape:
Tumblr media
Weird quirks: (like this bolete mushroom that bruises blue!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Families and relationships: (like the deadly duo, two closely related and very dangerous amanita mushrooms!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And other advantageous traits: (like bioluminescence or toxins!)
Tumblr media
Don’t forget to have fun with it! It doesn’t have to be perfectly scientifically accurate, be creative! If you do the angel wings mushroom, you can give your scug wings! Pick a mushroom that’s used for dying fabric? They can be a textile worker! The possibilities are endless!

Funguary Feb 25 - Cryptic Stinkhorn - Clathrus archeri
Clathrus archeri, var. Mari.Lwyd is a rare form of european stinkhorn commonly found in Wales. It can reach up to ninety centimeters in total height, from generative organ to the tips of it's tentacles.
The tentacles exude a syrupy liquid commonly understood to have beer-like properties, designed to attract various insects and mollusks that then become drunk, and die near the fungus. This ensures it has plenty of nutrients to eventually grow more fungal matter under the skull and lever it to the top.
Once exposed, the skull will weather and develop a cloak-like veil, enabling it to be used as the basis of a Mari Lwyd costume. However, if not given regular alcoholic application, the fungus will deliquesce and collapse.

Devil’s Fingers (Clathrus Archeri)
Devil's fingers, often referred to as octopus stinkhorn, is a rare fungus that was first discovered in Britain, 1914. It's found in decaying matter like mulch, in both woodlands and grasslands but is scarce all throughout the U.K.
Tumblr media
This eerie red, tentacle like mushroom sprouts from an egg-shaped pod that is called a witches egg. The Devil's Fingers usually has 4-7 slender and spongy arms. Each arm can grow up to 10cm, and a sticky black substance filled with spores (gleba) coats the tendrils. When it reaches full maturity, it begins to smell of putrid rotting flesh, which attracts insects. The spores are then spread by the visiting insects wherever they land next.

Funguary 19 - Red Basket Stinkhorn
Tumblr media
Another day, another battle with my art nemesis: the nose. I should really know by now I have a hard time with em. But i had a ✨vision✨ so... And I do really like the way it came out, even though it does kinda remind me of those nets around oranges lol.

Funguary Day 19: Red Basket Stinkhorn
Most mushrooms spread their spores by releasing them to the wind, but not stinkhorns. Stinkhorns contain their spores in a stinky goo called gleba. The Red Basket Stinkhorn’s gleba is located on the inside of its lattice. Flies are attracted to the foul smell of the stinkhorns and flock to it, getting the gleba on them and spreading the spores to wherever they go next.
