🍄 Funguary 2022 Week 1 ➡️ Follow my Instagram! | Check out the rest of this series!
It’s the weekends, and I’ve finally got time to start uploading some of my older works! I remember starting this challenge late, so I had to compile several prompts together at times to keep up with the days of the week.
Personal favorite? The deer, second to none. Maybe the hamster wheel though, hehe

Inky Cap | Clathrus Ruber | Destroying Angel | Mycena Chlorophos
The first four mushrooms of 2022′s Funguary, hosted by Feefal. I had a great time trying out new coloring techniques with these. The colors went down a lot more painterly than my usual style so it was a lot easier to add splashes of saturation or opposing colors. When I remember to come back and link them, these numbers will take you to the rest of the set:

The last week of #Funguary begins tomorrow - so for the last prompt for this week, we have Tetrapyrgos!
These little mushrooms can most commonly be found growing out of piles of compost. There are several different species in the Tetrapyrgos family, but the kind specifically shown here are known as Tetrapyrgos Nigripes (they look more like how we think of mushrooms looking, while other breeds of Tetrapyrgos almost look more like little fans).
I definitely took a slightly different approach with this one, what with also having smaller fungi growing out of her body rather than just one giant mushroom cap head (and it turns out drawing really thin veins with markers is actually more difficult than I thought). The urban legends about sirenheads still creep me out as much as ever, too, as you can probably tell by the proportions I gave her (you may recall my Clathrus Ruber artwork from last year, which was pretty similar). Between the mushrooms sprouting from her skin and the hospital gown she’s wearing, I almost feel like she might be some kind of horrifically failed science experiment - maybe even something that escaped from the SCP Foundation, perhaps? 🤔

Eight of Swords. Art by Joseph Buckley, from The Mushroom Hunter's Tarot.
Aptly named, the red cage mushroom (Clathrus ruber) is red, round, and hollow, resembling a latticed cage. Much like its close relative the devil's fingers (see Five of Wands), it first appears as a whitish egg before the red cage within expands outward. Like the devil's fingers mushroom, it also smells of rotting flesh, attracting the flies necessary to spread its spores. Seen as evil and a cause of a variety of ailments in European folklore, it is said to have been found growing on a human skull in a deserted church's tomb.
Keywords: Trapped, restricted, helplessness, imprisonment, negative thoughts

red cage fungus (Clathrus ruber) season is always a fun time. they're called witch's cages (gaiolas de bruxa) in portuguese, which is obviously silly as witches are notorious for their lockpicking skills and a cage would be a bad place to keep one in
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they start out as these little innocent looking balls but quickly grow into their stinky red forms in a matter of hours. they can stick around for a few days but it's not uncommon for one to be a dry greyish mess only 24 hours after sprouting

some can get really bright red and juicy like this one i found today. if the inside of this thing reminds you of a nice fruit and you're wondering if they're edible i recommend purging those thoughts from your mind because getting close enough for these two photos gave me a headache from the rotting smell. the flies love it though

Clathrus ruber is a species of fungus in the family Phallaceae. It is commonly known as the latticed stinkhorn, the basket stinkhorn, or the red cage. The fungus is saprobic and feeds off decaying woody plant material. The fruit body initially appears like a whitish “egg” attached to the ground at the base by cords called rhizomorphs.

Some funky fungi I saw the other day at a local nature preserve. Based on the goop and smell, I’m pretty sure they’re Clathrus ruber.
