Devil’s Fingers (Clathrus Archeri)
Devil's fingers, often referred to as octopus stinkhorn, is a rare fungus that was first discovered in Britain, 1914. It's found in decaying matter like mulch, in both woodlands and grasslands but is scarce all throughout the U.K.
Tumblr media
This eerie red, tentacle like mushroom sprouts from an egg-shaped pod that is called a witches egg. The Devil's Fingers usually has 4-7 slender and spongy arms. Each arm can grow up to 10cm, and a sticky black substance filled with spores (gleba) coats the tendrils. When it reaches full maturity, it begins to smell of putrid rotting flesh, which attracts insects. The spores are then spread by the visiting insects wherever they land next.

✨the Gender Chaos Mushrooms are here, and they're gorgeous!!!✨
Inspired by the mushroom Schizophyllum commune and its tens of thousands of possible reproductive permutations, which are often colloquially referred to as either the sex or gender of the fungi. This is an organism that has no time for the futile enforcement of a gender binary! Whatever assumptions you make about my gender based on appearances is a you problem, buddy.
Professionally printed (by the phenomenal stickerorchard) on a holographic foil with a glitter finish, this sticker is sure to add some pizzazz to your day! They have been listed on my BuyMeACoffee page (with a $2 discount for members!)

do you know of the Cortinarius violaceus?
Tumblr media
It is 19. Obviously.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cortinarius violaceus, common name; Violet Webcap. A lovely purple mushroom. Typically with a tall stipe and textured cap. Some say they are edible but just not worth it as they do not taste as distinct as they look. However consuming them may cause extreme stomach pain and other adverse health affects. It is recommended not to consume any type of cortinarius mushrooms due to this common trait.

Syathus Striatus
Tumblr media
Syathus Striatus, also known as The fluted birds nest, is a mushroom found in temperate areas across most of the world. The mushrooms namesake (the egg looking blobs in the middle of the cap) are actually full of spores. The mushrooms caps are built so falling raindrops can fling the egg-shaped-spore-blobs in the middle, off planting new mushrooms.

Black Trumpet
Tumblr media
The Black Trumpet, or Craterellus cornucopioides, is an edible mushroom. This fungus is found in woods in North America, East Asia, and Europe.  It mostly grows under oak, beech or other broad-leaved trees, especially in moss in moist spots on heavy calcareous soil. It seems to appears from June to November, and in the UK, from August to November.
The fruiting body does not have a separation into stalk and cap like most mushrooms, but is shaped like a funnel expanded at the top, normally up to about 4 inches tall and .5–7 cm in diameter. The upper and inner surface is dark or black, and on rare occasions yellow. The lower and outer surface is a much lighter shade of grey. The fertile surface is somewhat smooth but may be wrinkled. There are no poisonous mushrooms that look like the Black Trumpet, making this a great mushroom for beginners to identify. However when it comes to locating them out in the wilderness, they’re not always easy to find. Their queer shape and dark color make them look like minuscule black holes on the forest floor.
Black trumpets are also edible! They contain 69.45 g of protein, 13.44 g of carbohydrates (mostly mannitol), 4.88 g of fat, fatty acids (primarily of the polyunsaturated variety), phenols, flavonoids, 87 mg of vitamin C, and vitamin B12. They don't look like something you'd willingly eat, but they have a very good flavor! When dried their flavor acquires black truffle.
The Black Trumpet was first described in 1753 by Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus and known as “Trompette de la mort” which translates to “Trumpet of Death” in France!
No way, three mushroom blogs in one day???!! I rlly need to get new hobbies….

The largest organism on earth being a giant Armillaria ostoyae fungus in Oregon is pretty cool in theory until you learn that it’s a parasitic fungus that is only that large because we’ve fucked everything up so bad. Pollution? It weaponizes that shit against the trees it infects. Droughts? Weak trees mean easy pickings. Global Warming? Double whammy, easier growth AND weakened trees. Under normal circumstances it should only spread so far, and go after particularly weak trees, but now vast swathes of Oregon forest are dying and it is not estimated to stop spreading any time soon, if ever.

Well, I mean, mushrooms have 17,000 sexes. At that point, male/female is such a reductionist list that it literally wouldn't apply to them.

United States of America 🇺🇸:
In the state of Oregon, USA, you can find an individual Armillaria ostoyae, colloquially referred to as “humongous fungus”. It the largest known single living organism in the world by area, with most of its body being underground. Scientists estimate that it covers over 9.6 squared kilometres, and likely far more than that.
Tumblr media
It’s edible - though its taste is of questionable quality - and often mistaken as a single innocent mushroom, as bits of the fungus “sprouts” on occasion. It is also likely over 2400 years old.
Oh, and it’s bioluminescent. So basically, the fucker glows!

Imagine the fellowship showing each other pictures and paintings of themselves as children
Everyone cooes over Gimli with the tiniest little beard and mini axe, the Hobbits all sleeping in a little pile of curls and tails, Aragorn in formal elven clothing but his hair is still as messy cause they couldn’t style it even if they tried, Boromir holding a baby Faramir cause he refused to part with him after he was born
And then Legolas shows the ugliest fucking thing any of them had ever seen, looking like a fleshy newborn bird with enormous eyes and ears, and he’s proudly boasting over how he’s seen as one of them most beautiful elven infants in millennium, and the rest of them are afraid to say anything because What The Fuck
