As this year comes to a close here's hoping for more (I.e. any) Morally grey aroace protagonists in (adult) fiction. Because as much I love Ymir by Rich Larson, I can't just keep reading one book over and over again. I'm starving for Dirtbag Aces in media.
#books#asexual#booklr#ace#asexual books#aroace#ace books#I honestly feel so alone in wanting more villainous or at least not 100% squeaky clean moral paragon ace characters#especially bc the rest of the community has decided that those type of aces are “bad representation” like yeah there's a history of villains#being coded as asexual to emphasise their evil bc appearantly not experiencing attraction = evil#but God damn it is so demoralising seeing other queer identies getting to have Good(!) messy/morally derelict representation that has#dedicated subcultures that clamour for and celebrate such#but the ace community is still on that infantilisation type beat where ace characters have to be the most blandly inoffensive#can't so much as say a mean word goody toe shoes or it's “bad rep”#pheww I went off a bit there but uh yeah if you want a class traitor drug addicted cyborg alien monster hunter ace mc then read#ymir by Rich larson#and if you also appreciate a good villainous ace then let me know so I'm not the lone ace who likes the “bad rep” aces#also i don't dislike good/nice characters and I genuinely hate the edgelord sentiment that good/nice (queer) characters are boring ugh#I'd just like to see more variety in aroace characters and not see every halfway decently written villainous ace character get dumped on for#“bad representation” by the ace community#so yeah I love me some#dirt bag aces

Flicked back through my a-level copy of Frankenstein recently - shoutout to 16 year old me for the only annotations in the entire section where Victor made the Creature being ‘plosives’ ‘imago dei’ and ‘ironic, he’s sexist’. I stand by all of those statements.
#I imagine there were some other details in there that might have been helpful to essay writing love but well done all the same.#to be fair I can actually still recall in quite a lot of detail exactly the arguments I wanted to make that those annotations linked to#so yk#I guess it’s decent annotating#concise and straight to the point#rather out of character for me#especially considering there are some pages in all of my a level books where it’s actually damn near impossible to read the text#because I’ve written in every conceivable space#mary shelly's frankenstein#mary shelley#Frankenstein’s monster#victor frankenstein#frankenstein#a level english literature#dk rambles about random stuff

i know i just got here, but seeing all of the laughably bad takes from both sides of the spectrum is convincing me that no, i don’t actually need to be on social media again.
#this is about mdzs fandom discourse#this is a jc/jiggy support blog#but#they did bad things and made bad choices and i love that about them#i can acknowledge their bad choices and their flaws and still like them#but hooooooly fuck#the jc/jiggy/XICHEN antis drive me fucking banana nut bonkers#there are valid reasons to dislike all 3 of those characters and somehow you have created ones that are so far from reality i cannot believe#that we read the same book#or watched the same shows#1. get some reading comprehension i beg you#2. for the love of fucking god please like. find some god damn joy in your lives and stop giving a fuck about characters you don’t like#2.5 and people who like characters you don’t like#2.75 and i know that’s kind of blasse of me to say in the tags of a post griping abt people griping abt characters they don’t like#3. just??? go find joy? touch grass?? not everything is about you and your terrible reading comprehension#4. stop assuming that your way is the right way#5. the puritanical bullshit of protagonist inherently good is really getting old#i am begging you to do any modicum of research into the concept of antiheroes#it will broaden your horizons i prommy#not everything is about blorbos being all good all the time#your blorbo is not free of sin#(unless it’s sizhui. sizhui is always free of sin)#anyway i think imma delete tumblr. the algorithm keeps showing me anti posts and im old and tired#no discourse here pls and thanks#moots dm for discord if u wanna

Books of 2024: September Wrap-Up.
Delighted to report I am VERY far behind on my NaNo prep reading goals, and now September is gone (oops). However! This month I did manage to carve nine (9) pages out of a behemoth scene, write a newsletter article for the nonprofit I volunteer at, and alpha/hype read a friend's manuscript, so I still had a fairly wordy month (I say, as if all of my months are not Wordy™).
Photos/reviews linked below:
THE HAUNTED BOOKSTORE, Vol. 1 & 2 - ★★★½ These were cute! I liked them enough that I went ahead and ordered the next two volumes, and I'm glad I did--turns out there are only four manga in the series, so I'll have the whole thing :) I plan on returning to these after November/as part of Driscoll prep again, because they match the vibe I'm trying to channel really well.
CITY OF SAINTS AND MADMEN - ★★★½ (rating subject to change upon series completion) So on my shelf, this book doesn't LOOK like a brick, but it's 704 pages (according to Goodreads, because the pages in the back half of the book are not numbered sequentially lmaooo). It's told in several novellas strung together and then An Appendix full of all sorts of (sneakily?) relevant bits and pieces--fascinating anthology of a book, very meta-textual. It grew on me! If you can get through the first story, it's worth sticking with, and the whole series is turning into a puzzle box. And speaking of...
SHRIEK: AN AFTERWORD - 135/451 pages read; will report back later. I definitely had to dual wield CITY and SHRIEK last night to compare passages that are, in fact, duplicated across books, and I feel like the calculus meme about it. This one is structured interestingly, too: It's written by a sister (first person) about her brother, but the brother is annotating her manuscript in his own first person (in parentheticals wedged into or tacked onto paragraphs, also first person). I'm very excited to finish this, and equally excited to see what's going on with FINCH after that, so. Back to reading I go!!
Under the Cut: A Note About ~*★Stars★*~
Historically, I have been Very Bad™ about assigning things Star Ratings, because it's so Vibes Heavy for me and therefore Contingent Upon my Whims. I am refining this as I figure out my wrap up posts (epiphany of last month: I don't like that stars are Odd, because that makes three the midpoint and things are rarely so truly mid for me)(I have hacked my way around this with a ½). Here is, generally, how I conceptualize stars:
★ - This was Bad. I would actively recommend that you do NOT read this one, no redeeming qualities whatsoever, not worth the slog. Save Yourself, It's Too Late For Me. Book goes in the garbage (donate bin).
★★ - This was Not Good. I would not recommend it, but it wasn't a total waste or wash--something in here held my interest/kept my attention/sparked some joy. I will not be rereading this ever. Save Yourself (Or Join Me In Suffering, That Seems Like A Cool Bonding Activity).
★★★ - This was Good/Fine/Okay/Meh. I don't care about this enough to recommend it one way or another. Perfectly serviceable book, held my interest, I probably enjoyed myself (or at least didn't actively loathe the reading). I don't have especially strong feelings. You probably don't need to save yourself from this one--if it sounds like your jam, give it a shot! Just didn't resonate with me particularly powerfully. I probably won't reread this unless I'm after something in particular.
★★★½ - I liked this! I'll probably recommend it if I know it matches someone's vibes or specific requests, but I didn't commit to a star rating on Goodreads. More likely to reread, but not guaranteed.
★★★★ - I really enjoyed this!! I would recommend it (sometimes with caveats about content warnings or such--I tend to like weird fucked up funny shit, and I don't have many hard readerly NO's). Not a perfect book for me by any means, but Very Good. This is something I would reread! Join me!!
★★★★★ - I LOVED THE SHIT OUT OF THIS, IT REWIRED MY BRAIN, WILL RECOMMEND TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE AT THE SLIGHTEST PROVOCATION (content warning caveats still apply--see 4-star disclaimer). Excellent book, I'll reread it regularly, I'll buy copies for all my friends, I'll try to convince all of Booklr to read it, PLEASE join me!!
#books of 2024#books of 2024: september wrap-up#the haunted bookstore#ambergris trilogy#jeff vandermeer#city of saints and madmen#shriek: an afterword#shriek#the more of these wrap ups i do the more i realized i picked THE ABSOLUTE WORST TIME TO START THEM btw#like i've definitely read 46 books so far this year total#so averaging more than one a week by a fairly significant margin#and YET: the past two months i've only finished three (3)#because i keep nerfing myself with bricks (le guin and vandermeer respectively)#and because i've figured out the writing groove again a little better lol#anyway i wanted to have already finished reading a bunch of my haunted house books so those could be marinating right now#but instead i'm staring at them several books out on my shelf still#so i might be taking a couple weeks to do a lot of reading and prep a book in two lmao#i might be able to do the human/earthling character prep now and just save the house for after i read more haunted house stuff#i want to be swimming in a sea of Ideas and i'm not quite there yet#making gr8 progress on the fungus front though so that counts for something#adhd really is feeling like you're behind all the damn time huh

Opened up to my therapist about my questionable relationships with adults growing up (aka being groomed and abused by adults growing up to different degrees ranging from mildly inappropriate to holy shit that person should be in jail)
And started discussing the guilt I feel about those relationships and events, and stuff
It's one of those things I just couldn't bring myself to talk about
She sent me an assignment to go out and get something for those kids I was growing up that would've made them smile
It was an interesting experience
#mein shit#got a cunty short i know i wouldve loved in middleshool-highschool#a book cause i used to love reading#that one was hard#cause i dont read anymore and i had to find something that i thought i wouldve enjoyed growing up and wouldve been appropiate but that#i could read now as well#i got some pocky#and i got a little pink pocketknife with a cutesy bunny handle for 8-9 yo me#cause i knew that kid still liked pink and i just i hate pink but i decided i was buying that kid pink#and i saw the knife and it made me chuckle and i was like yeah this feels appropriate#that kid couldve used a pocketknife#think im gonna watch my favorite movies from those eras this Saturday and maybe braid myself a friendship bracelet#idk guess recovery and trying to regain a sense of humanity and personhood also includes reconnecting with yourself#and trying to be kind to the people and children you were before you got to this point#more of a box cutter than a pocket knife but honestly damn near the same thing in my experience lol#i think theyre used more as a weapon than as 'box cutters'

when you read the novel did you start from where you left off in the manhwa or did you start from chapter 1?
im currently in the zhongnan conference arc rn but i feel so slow reading ARGH
i started where i left off in the manhwa! season one of the webcomic ends in chapter 117 of the novel so if uve read that far in the webcomic u can just skip..
if uve caught up w season two though i have no idea which chapter correlates w them setting off for the beast palace (where id recommend u start) ERMMM.. in the 200chapters or something i thinks.. someone lmk..
#rotmhs is such an insanely long novel id just suggest skipping the earlier chapters that are covered by the webcomic#i wuld love to read those at some point..but gawd damn..im still not even half way thru the whole book yet

mgsv has so many literary references to books i have essays abt it kind of makes me.
#i'm sick this is my slightly fever-induced thought stream in the rest of the tags sorry ->#all the 1984 stuff is really interesting. the position of both ocelot and kaz as the people running room 101 is really fascinating.#because it somehow manages to place huey in the position of winston while also having venom be in the position of winston.#<- would that make quiet julia? actually yes it does bc of her nature motifs.#and the whole game seems to doublethink of whats real and what isn't. though it starts to tell you what isn't real its still there.#and then with moby dick you have pequod which is just. the ship. and queegueg who is ishmaels friend. which is why its kind of perfect he i#the other pilot we see who takes kaz places. and theres other stuff with him but i don't want to get into that. i could go on for a while.#but whats interesting is that ahab seems to apply more to kaz than it does to venom. esp because his own deception results in his downfall.#whereas that isn't true with venom if youve played mg1 he just kinda keeps going with it to at least some degree.#and i guess kaz is working for foxhound but you know what i mean.#ocelot even being the perfect counterpart to starbuck who works at kaz's side but disagrees with his methods to an extreme.#he isn't of the same morals as starbuck but its just the oppositional character type.#does that mean cipher is moby dick. yes actually bc of the leg thing with kaz. oh my god.#<- funny enough i am actually getting moby dick back out of the library bc i never finished it and its been ages since i read what i did.#i remember the narration being kind of nuts.#honestly the lord of the flies stuff feels less like a reference and more like eli read that book and decided he wanted to do it irl. lol.#i can't say these books are even close to being favorites but i'm intimately familiar with both 1984 and lotf so those are. those.#and moby dick is genuinely just kind of. what in the hell did i experience. theres a lot to unpack.#and i didn't even finish the damn thing.#ok i'm done now i just needed to get that out of my system. now i'm off to read veniss underground. 👍#.txt
