BTS Tutorial: Buying vs. Streaming
Attention puppykitties!
On March 24th, Jimin's album FACE is up against titans, including Ed Sheeran and Lana Del Rey. His antis have stated they WILL be giving them boosts just so he will rank even lower.
In addition, we will never get radio play like those artists because BTS will not bow to payola rules and pay for play. BTS has only ARMY.
So the best way to counteract that deficit is to buy the album. For example, you can chart a song by streaming it 150 times or buy it once, and it's the same count toward Billboard.
Jimin's album has 6 songs and is under a half hour long, so you can stream 900 songs nonstop for a day and a half, or you can buy 1 album. Given there are charts that count for 24 hours and for a week, buying is often the most expedient way to guarantee a spot on the Hot 100 and BB200.
For US and Puerto Rico, digital and physical albums are given the same weight in the charts (except for in WeVerse--digital songs in that platform do not count for Billboard).
I'm gonna link to Amazon CDs that will count for charts because Amazon products can be tricky with sellers from all over the world. I think you'll easily be able to find the albums on WeVerse (the digitals won't count toward Billboard but the CDs will) and the digitals on iTunes (this will count as a pure digital sale).
Here is where you can preorder:
Also at Target--it can be a little tricky because the cheaper version for $19.99 doesn't let you choose which version you end up getting. So here are both albums:
Now, let me say to my friends on here who are pinching pennies out of necessity: YOU ARE NO LESS OF AN ARMY IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO BUY ALBUMS. Nor are you less of an ARMY if you have to prioritize the typically cheaper digital version (it still counts, it just makes the artists a little less money and you don't get stuff like photocards and all). I'd love it if you could reach out to funding accounts for help; they often will prioritize digital and that totally counts too, both for charts and awards in Korea.
Whatever you do, be really careful of bundle deals with a bunch of ancillary accessories as those often will NOT count for Billboard--be sure to check before buying.
And even if all you do is stream on free trial premium YouTube and Spotify accounts, you are still helping. So no shame. No censure.
The reason we have success as an ARMY is so we can each of us contribute to the best of our abilities, and cover for each other when we need to tap out. If you're not in the US or Puerto Rico, you can stream in a different time zone and give those ARMYs some much needed rest or a chance to work at their jobs.
We all have our part to play.
So cover for other ARMY however you're able!
Whatever you can do, do it and take it seriously!

ATTENTION TUMBLR ARMY THIS IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED
I’m sure you all know the importance of charting since you all celebrate when bts achieve something. Well I’m head to say that we are currently struggling and need the help of every army if we’re going to stay #1 in the charts or at least top 10
Tumblr media
BTS have shown that they also care about charts and have goals they eventually want to achieve. These goals can’t happen by magic but by hard work from armys. This post is to help whoever is interested in keeping BTS on the charts so they reach their goals. Don’t forget LONGEVITY IS THE KEY
If you’re buying the album on iTunes buy the songs individually and but the title track (fake love) first. If you don’t have enough money you can buy just fake love which only costs $1.29
If you’re a US army and want to buy the physical albums and have them count for billboard charting, you can buy them at target, Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon and hot topic. They’re between $19.99 to $21.99 and the shipping is usually cheaper than Kpop stores
Shazam is very important for radio play which is highly needed for us to make it to top 10 of hot100 which is very difficult to make and only the top US artists with general public support have. When Shazaming delete your Shazam/Cache close the app then start over. That way all your Shazams count
Tumblr media
IF YOURE AN ARMY WHO DOESNT HAVE TIME OR YOU JUST WANT SOMETHING EASIER WITH NO COSTS, STREAMING IS THE RIGHT THING FOR YOU. Streaming on music sites is VERY important for charting and so far we are very behind on streams and need more help. Our biggest target for streaming is Spotify (which is free) but please stream on other platforms like Apple Music, tidal, YouTube music, Amazon, Xbox, google play music etc. streaming on music platforms is waaayyy easier that streaming on YouTube so don’t worry if you’re busy. It’s very simple. Just leave a tab open on your laptop, tablet or phone, have fake love (or the whole album) on repeat and that’s it! That’s all you have to do. You can leave it there and go on with your day. The only thing is you can’t mute it or have the volume lower than 50%. You can mute the tab but it’s best to leave extra earphone in so the sound doesn’t bother you. If you’re a Non US army then you need to get a US army to make a free Spotify account for you so your streams will count for US charts otherwise stream for BTS to chart in your country. Also paid accounts weigh more that free accounts since billboard changed their rules recently but free streams are still very important. There are currently many free trials going on and even I am using them too so don’t worry about money for now
Remember longevity if VERY important and we don’t want to drop off the charts after just one week of being #1 on billboard 200 that would be very embarrassing especially after the rolling stone threw shade at us saying we’d only last 7 days because Shawn Mendes is going to surpass us next and our poor streaming
Ps. If you don’t care about charting then this post isn’t for you so pay no attention to it. All I want is to help armys who are interested in helping BTS achieve their goals and see the smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes when they win big awards

Reminder: HP’s ‘Cheap’ Instant Ink Program Requires Monthly Payments, Constant Monitoring
Last November, HP rolled out a new “Instant Ink” program. I didn’t pay much attention to it at the time, and neither, apparently, did a number of other people. Some customers have accidentally discovered that they signed up for a monthly service that you have to purchase indefinitely if you intend to continue using an Instant Ink printer.
Last month I canceled a random charge for $4.99 per month from HP called "InstantInk". Wasn't sure what it was for. I've had it for over a year but had no idea what it did.
I just found out what it did pic.twitter.com/lsFLDR5grv
— Ryan Sullivan (@ryandonsullivan) January 17, 2020
Instant Ink is HP’s idea of “Printing as a service.” Here’s how it works:
You choose a printing plan that suits your needs. If you print 15 or fewer pages per month, you don’t have to pay anything for Instant Ink. If you pay $3, you can print 50 pages, roll over up to 100 pages that you haven’t used, and buy the right to print 10 additional pages for just $1. This scales up to $20 for 700 pages. The ratio of pages per dollar is 16.6 at the $3 plan and 35 at the $20 plan. Anything with ink on it counts as a page.
There are some good points to Instant Ink, including:
No contract (service is month to month)
HP monitors printer ink levels and automatically ships new cartridges before you run out
You can print in color for the same price-per-sheet as printing in black and white, not counting the cost of photo paper.
Less risk (at least in theory) of running out of ink at a critical moment. I suspect this is why the $19.99 plan comes with a spare set of cartridges — HP is aware that a company might suddenly need to print hundreds of pages.
It appears to be optional on every printer except the HP Tango, which requires Instant Ink in order to work. If you’re aware of other products that require it, sound off below. HP is pushing the idea hard but it doesn’t seem to have started making it mandatory across product lines just yet.
Here’s the downsides:
The printer requires a constant internet connection in order for Instant Ink to work.
You cannot roll over pages you paid for indefinitely (you can adjust your plan)
You’re literally paying someone an ongoing fee for the privilege of printing from a product you purchased at a store at full price.
Any amount of ink counts as a page. Need to print a test sheet? That’s a page. Accidentally wind up with one letter printed on an otherwise blank sheet? Still counts as a page.
Instant Ink only competes with printer ink costs if you print a lot of photos, and most people don’t. Good photo paper is also more expensive than regular paper, which would eat into some of the savings.
The overage fee structure is insane. You’d need to manage your print volume carefully relative to your print plan in order to avoid them, because slapping an extra 5 to 10-cent tariff on a printer’s per-sheet cost ruins the benefits of this service. The $3/month plan offers a base printing cost of 6 cents per sheet, while the $20/month plan brings this down to 2.8 cents per sheet, but if you have to buy additional paper, both numbers start becoming uncompetitive. According to William Harrel’s HP Office Jet Pro 9015 AIO review, here’s how buying ink the old-fashioned way compares to using Instant Ink on that device:
If you buy the highest-yield XL ink cartridges (2,000 pages monochrome and 1,600 pages color) for this AIO, each monochrome page will cost you about 2.2 cents and each color print will run about 8.8 cents. Subscribing to the company’s highest-yield Instant Ink subscription (700 pages for $19.99 per month, with each additional 20 pages for $1), each page will cost you 2.9 cents… Hence, it is with colorful, content-heavy pages that Instant Ink delivers the best value…
By comparison, the Epson WF-4720’s running costs are 2.7 cents monochrome and 8 cents color. The Canon TR8520, a five-ink printer, will run you significantly more than that. And the Brother MFC-J995DW, one of the company’s INKvestment Tank models, will run you just less than 1 cent for black pages and slightly less than 5 cents for color.
There seems to be very little benefit to anyone from this kind of solution. Instant Ink’s lower-end plans are not price competitive with alternative customer solutions (previously referred to as “buying a printer,”) and its upper-end plans would have you paying $240 per year to use a device you already purchased for $180. Yes, you get ink cartridges shipped to you, but I suspect HP has tailored the price per page against its own ink cartridge costs carefully. Unless you’re planning to start printing out full-page photo albums, I wouldn’t go looking for an HP Instant Ink printer. It may be convenient, but it doesn’t seem to be particularly cheap.

An Excerpt from Soda Pop Soldier
Call of Duty meets Diablo in this fast-paced, action-packed LitRPG novel from the author of GALAXY’S EDGE.
Gamer PerfectQuestion fights for ColaCorp in WarWorld, an online combat sport arena where mega-corporations field entire armies in the battle for real world global advertising-space dominance. Within the immense virtual battlefield, players and bots are high-tech grunts, using drop-ships and state-of-the-art weaponry to wipe each other out.
But times are tough and the rent is due, and when players need extra dough, there’s always the Black, an illegal open source tournament where the sick and twisted desires of the future are given free rein in the Wastehavens, a gothic dungeon fantasy world.
And all too soon, the real and virtual worlds collide when PerfectQuestion refuses to become the tool of a mad man intent on hacking the global economy for himself.
SODA POP SOLDIER by Nick Cole is available in paperback from Castalia Direct for $19.99. It is also available via Kindle and Kindle Unlimited on Amazon.
The war starts at 6 A.M., in-game time. By 6:45 we’re losing Hamburger Hamlet as our entire line begins to disintegrate.
It isn’t a total collapse. Pockets of resistance hold out in key positions, buying ColaCorp time, expensive time, to fall back and reorganize. On my right flank, Kiwi holds a high hill overlooking the Song Hua river basin. We call that hill WonderSoft Garage because of the small power station and vehicle spawn depot located there. WonderSoft had made the capture of that hill and power station a primary objective in the last three battles we’d fought at this end of the basin.
And it looked like they were gonna try for it again today.
Over BattleChat, Kiwi swears as he burns through the ammo that an air resupply Albatross barely managed to get through. In my mind, I can see empty lager cans parading around the workspace that is Kiwi’s keyboard and monitor, as ambient in-game sound resounds in a metallic symphony of ammo brass expended in adult-sized doses. If the sound of auto rifles and explosions is a kind of music, and to some of us it is, then Kiwi is Beethoven.
Through graphically rendered feathery willow trees and the game-supposed heat waves of the day, I can barely make out what’s going on up at the top of the hill in brief glimpses. Three fast-attack WonderSoft Goats, their version of a jeep, and a Thrasher light mech are burning. Thick oily smoke belches from the mech, and a moment later it explodes in a shower of sparks. More WonderSoft Goats and Thrashers climb the road to the bridge that leads to our side of the river.
WonderSoft infantry scramble from cover, racing to other cover, as Kiwi fights hard to keep them from crossing the choke point at the bridge and capturing WonderSoft Garage. It’s about to get real intimate, real quick.
“Command, we’re gettin’ killed up here,” shouts Kiwi over BattleChat. His transmission is broken and distorted by automatic weapons fire in the background. “I’m down to three grunts,” he continues. “Request reinforcements or evac, A-S-A-P! If you’ve got fire support, I’ll take it now, but you’d better drop it right on top of my position, your choice, Command.”
Minutes earlier I’d requested Command point two transports of grunts our way as reinforcements. One of our dropships got jumped by a flight of WonderSoft Vampires as they’d approached the LZ. The other, piloted by RiotGuurl, had gotten away.
I hope.
RiotGuurl is as good a pilot as I’ve ever worked with. Losing the first transport hadn’t been an easy choice for her, but when a WonderSoft Vampire caught your electronic scent, there weren’t many options left for a transport squadron other than to split up and run like hell to get away from that wicked ground attack jet.
Since then RiotGuurl was maintaining radio silence. I know she’s chasing every nook and cranny in the jungle-clad hills that surround the basin on all sides, flying her gunship way too close to the computer’s representation of the ground, looking for a route back into Hamburger Hamlet so we can resupply and reinforce the river crossing. Maybe even help Kiwi.
“Be advised, Command, it’s just me now. All my grunts are KIA.” Kiwi again. “Two ammo packs left and multiple Softs inside the wire.” Kiwi never gives up. Even when he’s being overrun. Maybe it’s an Australian thing. Once this war is over, I plan on taking some of my winnings and heading down under to spend some time in Gigaboo Flats at the Wonky Boomerang, Kiwi’s favorite post-battle watering hole. But hopefully the Cola Wars will never end, or else how will I get paid?
“Kiwi, evac not possible at this time. Sorry about that, son.” It’s RangerSix, ColaCorp’s tactical commander. The fact that he’s overseeing our little firefight reinforces how crucial this battle really is for ColaCorp.
Using my targeting monocular, I scan the sloping hills and tall grass behind and above Hamburger Hamlet for our commander’s avatar. RangerSix is the kind of guy who can change a battle with a basic rifle kit and some explosives. As usual I can’t find his hiding place.
Across the river, WonderSoft artillery begins throwing everything they’ve got at us. Head down inside my command post, I crank my speakers to full ambient in-game sound, cutting off Catherine Wheel’s seminal late-twentieth-century album Ferment. I’m waiting to hear RiotGuurl’s turbines. She’s Kiwi’s only hope now.
“Sixty rounds left. How about fire support, RangerSix?” It’s Kiwi.
“Negative at this time.” I hear the quiet frustration in RangerSix’s smoke-stained voice.
“Die in place again, huh?” grunts Kiwi.
Behind me, in the detailed squat bamboo and stone village that is the game designers’ representation of a fictional Southeast Asian river basin village, a place we call Hamburger Hamlet as a nod to the often bloody struggles for online supremacy that take place there, our armor rolls through, retreating farther to the east. We’ve been holding this side of the river, waiting for our massive Charger IV battle tanks to cross the muddy brown shallows under heavy mortar fire. Now, it’s time to bug out.
WonderSoft Garage has always been the key to control of the river crossing at Hamburger Hamlet. There’s no bridge, but the river’s shallow enough to get most vehicles across. Now that the overwatch Kiwi was providing at the garage is on the verge of being taken, the battle, at least here alongside the river, is lost for ColaCorp. Any of our units on the far side of the river aren’t getting back to our lines without an airlift. The game day still promises more fighting. It’s Saturday, and the network goes big on coverage for the weekend. But to lose good armor this early would spell disaster for whatever Command has in mind for us to do next. We’ve gotten the Chargers back to this side of the river. That’s enough for now. We’ll have to fight another battle somewhere else.
“Afraid so, son,” says RangerSix to Kiwi over BattleChat regarding any kind of assistance. Or to be more specific, the complete lack thereof. “Sorry.”
Kiwi doesn’t reply.

How Phish became the unlikely heroes of digital music streaming
Tumblr media
As Phish recently prepared to hit the road for their annual summer tour, I found myself digging in the dark reaches of a closet to locate a binder I'd filled with dozens of CD recordings of the jam band's live shows.
Every show is a spectacle unto itself, an ever-changing setlist that never repeats, lasting between two and three hours, and featuring improvisational jams that can stretch upwards of 20 minutes. Each one is unique, and if you're a fan, you want to hear every possible version of your favorite song, and to collect them all. As a fan of the band for the last 23 years, I've been hell-bent on trying.
But it's more than just the memories. Hauling out the overstuffed binder, I thought of the band's open-minded recording policy — trading is okay as long as the shows are audience recordings (as opposed to soundboard recordings) and no one profits — and how it's helped create something special. In Phish's 35 years and counting, their fans have done the remarkable: They've used technology to turn their favorite band into one of the quieter successes of the streaming music revolution.
youtube
Piles of dusty tapes and CDs like the ones in my closet are now nostalgia-inducing relics of the past. We're living in a time when anyone can listen to just about any Phish show with just a few taps on their phone. And it's all thanks to a forward-thinking fan base and a band willing to experiment in the digital space.
Making the digital leap
So, about that binder.
Can’t find my old cassette tapes but found my binder of some old Phish shows on CD. Left: the final discs from the Big Cypress Y2K fest, Right: Clifford Ball (1996) pic.twitter.com/sojOGmfJRi
— Marcus Gilmer (@marcusgilmer) July 16, 2018
Yeah, that's a lot of CDs. But fans who traded shows in the early days had to deal with even more unruly stacks of cassette tapes.
In the late '80s and early '90s, getting your hands on a Phish show was difficult. You were often limited to trading with other fans in parking lots before shows, or you might luck into finding a friend with tapes you could copy.
It was a meticulous process as well. Attention to detail was a key factor for fans looking to build their collections, because there were so few ways to get your hands on copies, and you wanted the one that sounded best.
Then came the internet, which changed just about everything.
Phish is hardly the only jam band to have a fan-friendly taping policy. The Grateful Dead developed theirs years before Phish even formed, and plenty of other artists, from Umphrey's McGee to Pearl Jam, have similar policies.
But Phish is unique in the way their fans were early digital pioneers, using this new way of communicating to flex their ingenuity via message boards like etree.org and fan-run websites to build online communities to facilitate these trades.
Oh #Phish tapes, why can't I part with you. Who's got some phriendly advice? pic.twitter.com/C7UHe0vdzP
— Jennifer Bill (@BillJennifer) February 1, 2016
As digital technology has improved and gotten even cheaper, fans have continued to use their savvy to figure out better ways to share the band's shows far and wide. Case in point: all those damn CDs of mine.
Writable CD drives became increasingly affordable throughout the late-1990s, as did high-speed internet — especially on college campuses, where jam bands like Phish were especially popular. Since shows were recorded on digital equipment before they were transferred to cassette, fans were now able to copy the recordings directly to their computers, where they could be burned to CDs or stored digitally.
Fans of Phish and similar bands (the Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic) used these new tools to share shows across the web using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) sites (a forbearer of BitTorrent) and fan sites, even as Napster and MP3 sharing were still fledgling parts of the internet. People could now easily find and procure high-quality recordings of the shows without having to spend a fortune on postage and blank tapes.
This all coincided with a few other events that would help push Phish's popularity to new heights — and kickstart the band's own efforts to take advantage of this new tech.
Coming into the digital age with Nugs.net
Phish's long jams and their blend of rock, jazz, prog, and a dash of bluegrass helped the band organically build their own following. But they also welcomed Grateful Dead fans into the fold after the 1995 death of Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia brought that band's touring to a halt.
In the the late 1990s, Phish was also going through a creative peak that coincided with the band's first major flirtation with the mainstream. This brought an influx of new, younger fans (myself included) who were hungry to dig into the band's back catalog, which included hundreds of shows. Thanks to those aforementioned technological advances, it was now possible to do so with relative ease.
youtube
One of the sites that fans visited frequently for access to these shows was Brad Serling's Nugs.net. It accrued such a large following that representatives from the Dead and Phish would eventually make a fateful decision that left Serling playing a big role in the bands' digital future.
Serling told me the original response from the Grateful Dead to Nugs.net was pretty open: "Do whatever you want, just don't rip us off." But the site's popularity changed things.
Tumblr media
Nugs.net circa 2002, just before Brad Serling went to work for the bands he loved.
Image: mashable screenshot
By 2000, according to Serling, his site was doing 3,000,000 downloads a month of free Grateful and Phish shows. At this point, the bands reached out to Serling.
"I got a call from the lawyer that represented both Grateful Dead and Phish at the time, who said we either need to shut you down or go into business," he told me. Given the chance to work with the bands he loved, Serling happily sent in a business plan and was eventually brought on to help the bands transition to the digital era.
In the fall of 2001, Phish had gone on hiatus. To fill the void, the band announced a series of archival live CD releases, called Live Phish. In December 2002, the band announced their return to the road and Live Phish Downloads, one of the projects Serling was hired to help build, was unveiled.
Tumblr media
LivePhish.com as it appeared in early 2003
Image: mashable screenshot
The site offered downloads of every live show the band played on that tour, available immediately after each show concluded, as well as additional live shows from the band's archives, all crisp and clear soundboard recordings. (Shows on all subsequent tours have also been made available after their conclusion.) The shows were DRM-free and could be downloaded as MP3s or, for audiophiles, Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) files, which offered a higher quality sound.
Serling developed similar sites for bands like Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers. His old site, Nugs.net, continued to evolve, eventually becoming a silo where jam bands like Umphrey's McGee, Widespread Panic, and Grateful Dead spinoff Dead & Company could offer shows under a brand already familiar to jam band fans. The site also includes artists known for unique live experiences like Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam.
Tumblr media
The evolution of Nugs.net brought in dozens of additional bands, as seen in 2014.
Image: mashable screenshot
"Certainly in the jam band world where Nugs.net is servicing all of these bands that operate in the same universe with the overlapping fanbases, you can't expect the same fans to subscribe to multiple services," Serling explains. "So we quickly realized while Phish can stand up and do its own thing, for all the other bands, we pretty much have to put them together under one roof."
But Phish continued — and still continues — to take the streaming game to new levels, finding the perfect balance between fan service and business savvy.
"Like a velvet-rope Spotify"
Phish broke up in 2004 but reunited five years later in March 2009 (a separate story unto itself), thrilling fans and revving up the business side again. A year later, ahead of their 2010 summer tour, the band launched the first version of their LivePhish app, which brought the services of the website to smartphones and garnered praise.
youtube
Then, in October 2014, Phish changed the game again, announcing the LivePhish+ service, which gave subscribers access to the entire LivePhish catalog — including every live show starting with the band's return in 2002 and subsequent tours; all archival Live Phish releases; studio albums, band members' side projects; and the band's LiveBait compilations.
A new feature also allowed fans to download free copies of shows they attended by scanning their ticket's barcode (this service was switched to free streams in 2017).
The standard tier for LivePhish is currently priced at either $9.99 per month, or $99.99 per year. There's also a HiFi tier for subscribers, much like Tidal, Serling notes, higher-quality lossless streams for $19.99 a month, or $199.99 for a year.
As for subscriber and revenue numbers, a rep for the band said they didn't release that information publicly and the band declined a request for an interview.
"High-res audio has always been something that's important to me as a consumer," Serling says, "so I've made sure it's part of everything we do."
Tumblr media
A look at some of the offerings on the LivePhish iOS app
Image: mashable screenshots
Serling notes that the demand for that higher quality audio format is pretty consistent from fans seeking the best possible recordings of Phish. "We know the demand is there because when we're selling just downloads, 30 percent of our download sales are people buying CD quality or higher, and I would say maybe 10  to 15 percent are opting in for higher than CD quality," he says.
While many of the archival Live Phish releases, are available on Tidal and Spotify, Serling points out, "You can't get last night's Phish show. We're the exclusive distributor of that content."
He adds, "That is a premium service. We look at it — to over-simplify it — like a velvet-rope Spotify for live music."
And the service is always adding new elements. While webcasts have been available to purchase via the desktop or over-the-top versions of the app (i.e., Apple TV), in April 2018, LivePhish added an archival video component, making a rotation of classic shows available to rewatch.
youtube
Serling says the plans are "to blow this out with hundreds of more full-length concert videos."
The service is a dream for Phish fans who remember how difficult it was to put together tape collections during the pre-Internet days.
But what if you don't have the means to pay for this access or just don't want to shell out the subscription fees? There are still ways to get your hands on pretty much every Phish show ever played. It doesn't cost a penny, and it's still legit.
Streams by fans, for fans
The way in which Phish fans have shared and tracked audience-recorded versions of the band's live shows has also evolved with technology.
First and foremost is the famed Phish Spreadsheet. Updated by Kevin Hoy, the sheet is a scrupulously organized collection of downloadable links of just about every Phish show, plus a large chunk of side projects and solo efforts and other tangental Phish recordings, all abiding by the band's taping policy.
But the evolution has spilled into streaming as well, with sites like PhishShows and PhishTracks that offer up on-demand streams of the band's shows. There's even PhishJustJams, a site that strips away the verses and choruses of songs, streaming only the improv jams.
Hit play on our whole Top 25 series and sit back and enjoy the day. Happy 4th everyone!https://t.co/CzkVcNobp9 #phishjustjams pic.twitter.com/mRrS446Cvq
— PhishJustJams (@phishjustjams) July 4, 2018
And a few fans have been able to take their streaming sites from the web to the phone, building mobile apps that give fans on-demand access to streaming from just about anywhere.
The Relisten App
Daniel Saewitz was in college and working hard on building a website that could stream legally-shared versions of Phish shows when PhishTracks rolled out.
"I remember seeing it and being like, oh my god, this is the exact idea I've been working on," Saewitz recalls. "[PhishTracks creator Jeff Lang] clearly had been working at it longer than me, so it wasn't such an original idea. I was a little bit bummed to see that someone else had beat me to the punch, although it was very cool."
Instead of scrapping the project, Saewitz transitioned to making his site a place to stream Grateful Dead shows. It was originally called ListenToTheDead.com and pulled from the deep library of shows available on the Internet Archive's audio site.
Enter Alec Gorge, who had already created PhishOD, an app that lets fans could stream shows, add reviews, create playlists, and search across the library of Phish songs and shows available on PhishTracks.
Tumblr media
The ReListen app
Image: mashable screenshots
Soon, Saewitz had expanded his site to include other bands whose shows are streamable from the Internet Archive and rechristened the page as Relisten. Gorge decided to build a new app for Relisten, one that could be more flexible in hosting multiple bands, reusing a lot of the code he had used for PhishOD. The app is even available on Sonos now.
"It was like ping-pong, back and forth," Gorge said of the collaboration, "because each thing that we did inspired or motivated the other person to take the next step."
PhishOD and Phish.in
While PhishOD originally pulled shows that were on PhishTracks, with the blessing of that site's creator, Jeff Lang, PhishOD now pulls from another popular streaming site, Phish.in.
Phish.in's creator, Justin Craig-Kuhn, had worked with Jeff Lang on PhishTracks but decided he wanted to do something a little different. With Lang's blessing, he used parts of the code base from PhishTracks and utilized shows available on the spreadsheet to create Phish.in.
Tumblr media
Phish.in, a terrific website for streamin Phish shows
"I wanted to add features Phish Tracks didn't have at the time," Craig-Kuhn tells me. "I wanted other stuff like the map, the ability to log in and like stuff, and to build playlists."
Eventually, Gorge found Phish.in and worked with Craig-Kuhn, utilizing Phish.in's thoroughly documented application programming interface (API) which makes building software off of the site much easier, and used Phish.in to feed the PhishOD app.
It's become so popular, even Phish frontman Trey Anastasio has copped to using PhishOD, telling Rolling Stone in 2016 he sometimes listened to parts of shows on the app.
Spreading the love
Like Saewitz and Gorge, Craig-Kuhn is driven by the simple desire to share the sounds he loves with others. "There's some really beautiful music there," he says, "I just want to have more people experience Phish."
Per the band's policy, he can't accept money or donations for the site, but he's happy to pay out of pocket to host the shows online: "It basically costs me a hundred bucks a month to host it, and it brings me a lot of joy that a lot of people get to enjoy it."
Serling is, understandably, conflicted — a fan who once shared music online who's now on the business end, focused on protecting the band's bottom line. "I think a lot of those apps are great," Serling says. "But by attracting users and doing stuff with the band's trademarks and the songwriters' intellectual property, it's a little dicey."
Indeed, as Serling notes, it's all up to the band. "Do I wish [the streaming sites] didn't exist? Yes," he continues. "But am I gonna shut them down? No. It's not my prerogative to shut them down because I don't own the content."
Love, respect, and a recipe for success
Phish has consistently managed to be one of the best-selling touring acts in America. In 2016, nearly 35 years after their debut, they were still a top-25 grossing tour. And the band has managed to set trends, with fan support, in another area as well.
In the mid-1990s, Phish began throwing its own music festivals. Tens of thousands of fans descended upon places like an abandoned air field for multiple days of music (just Phish), food, and other entertainment, ranging from a Ferris wheel to movie screenings. Their eleventh festival, Curveball, will unfold this August in upstate New York.
youtube
As Pitchfork noted, these festivals served as precursors to the current music fest model, including Bonnaroo, which began life as a jam-band-oriented affair before diversifying its lineup.
At the core of all this success is a two-way street of admiration, respect, and loyalty that goes beyond your typical band-fan relationship, especially given the size of the fandom. It's hard to picture Taylor Swift or Jay-Z being able to similarly communicate their appreciation for the proactive nature of their fanbases.
But for Phish and its fans, it's definitely tangible. The band continues its taping policy (taper tickets are still available for purchase at their shows), and fans' show their ongoing devotion by following the band across the country or subscribing to LivePhish and purchasing webcasts when they can't.
Relisten's Saewitz acknowledged the role each group in the ecosystem contributes to make his and other sites and apps possible.
"It really wouldn't be possible without the bands," he says. "It's also really important to give credit and respect to the tapers, the people who are spending thousands of dollars on mics and hard drives and and tapes and who are going to all of these shows. And there's always an audience to consume that music."
As for me, well, after unsuccessfully leafing through that heavy binder for the show I wanted, I shrugged and threw it back in the closet, grabbed my phone and searched LivePhish for the show. When I couldn't find it there, I located it on PhishOD, put in my headphones, and hit play.
Tens of thousands of fans will be likewise glued to their phones this summer, checking their apps for the latest shows from the road. As they do so, they can be grateful for the work of fellow phans who helped to share Phish's music — and for the band we all love, who made it possible for all of us to always be part of the show, no matter where we are.

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn Review: You'd Be A Fu To Pay Full Price For This
In the early 90s, things were dope. We had Zubaz pants, Crystal Pepsi, and people would still accept a ginger ale from Bill Cosby. Basketball was also insanely popular at this time due to a glut of charismatic stars and the U.S. Olympic Dream Team. Basketball’s hottest young prospect at the time played college ball at Louisiana State and was drafted with the first overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft. Shaquille O’Neal (better known as Shaq) was introduced to the world.
Everyone Got Their Own Video Game In The 90s
A dominant player from the beginning, Shaq became a cultural phenomenon and began racking up endorsements and deals. Everyone wanted a piece of the Shaq Attack and the man was more than willing to do business. He starred in a major motion picture, Blue Chips, with NIck Nolte and even had a platinum rap album, known as Shaq Diesel. Naturally, Shaq needed his own video game (Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan, and Scottie Pippen already had their own games), and Electronic Arts delivered Shaq Fu into the world in late 1994.
Shaq Fu was a 2D fighting game that featured Shaq traveling to another dimension after taking a trip to Tokyo for a charity basketball game. It was a critical flop and gained notoriety in the following years as one of the worst games of its era. While its reputation is not wholly deserved, it is objectively a bad game and was destined to be an afterthought, or so you’d think. An Indiegogo campaign was launched in 2014 to help fund a sequel. The campaign reached its goal and after more than four years, the development team at Big Deez productions have delivered their vision for a modern Shaq Fu.
To get straight to the point, Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn is a better game than the lazy cash grab that inspired it. Unlike the original Shaq Fu, A Legend Reborn is a side-scrolling arcade beat-em up, much like the classic Final Fight, Streets of Rage, or TMNT: Turtles in Time. You work your way through the levels as Shaq and use your fists and feet to pound countless grunt enemies on your way to bosses that are found at the end of each chapter. The game is fully 3D and built on the Unity engine. It looks good enough and ran well on my PC. The controls are functional, though the gameplay suffers pretty much all of the faults inherent to the genre and feels half-baked. Those are all of the positive things I can say about Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn.
When A Crowd Funds Garbage
A Legend Reborn is at best a tone-deaf time killer with dated, unfunny satire and at worst, racist and insulting to the player’s time and money invested. You play as Shaq, who was an orphan raised by a Chinese caricature who is implied to be both a moron and pedophile. You work your way through the game’s six main chapters trying to beat up (or kill) some celebrities that may be involved in the death of Shaq’s mentor.
You go up against Donald Trump, Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian, Mel GIbson, Paris HIlton, and Madonna. Each level is has a backdrop that fits with the boss and grunt enemies that are loosely related to the celebrity. For example, Bieber is portrayed as a pretty boy and lives in a private compound where he is protected by packs of effeminate homosexuals and crazed female supporters. He is manufacturing a purple drink full of steroids and sugar for some reason or another. He also has henchman that try and kill Shaq with grape soda cannons and his property has a giant shower head that fills the moats on the property with soda. When you get to Bieber, he turns into a chicken that you must choke to finish off. It’s so funny and awesome that I almost passed out while playing.
Kim K. is pretty much a giant ass that love tacos, Paris Hilton lives in Los Angeles and is protected by a swapped palette pack of effeminate homosexuals. She uses her dog on a leash as a whip against Shaq while he cracks jokes about her sex tape. Mel Gibson shows up and its funny because he hates the jews and Donald Trump is depicted here as his character from The Apprentice, rather than his current leader of the free world gig. It almost feels like half of the humor here was topical 4+ years ago when this project was being crowdfunded and the developers decided to just leave everything as is into 2018.
Obviously, Madonna is the big bad final boss and reveals that she is Shaq’s mother, because he was a minority baby and she loves adopting them, but she’s also a whore and left him for dead. You must punch her lots of times to get payback, only to find out that maybe Kanye is behind all of this? Can’t wait to see what clever way this all plays out.
IcyHot Won't Be Able To Soothe These Pains
This is a bad game. It’s not worth $20 and, in my opinion, not worth $5, unless you’re the kind of person that would get a kick out of Paris Hilton slut jokes in 2018 and can’t get enough lazy, casual racism. A lack of cooperative multiplayer outright dooms the title, forcing it be be endured alone by those unlucky (or stupid) enough to buy it. I’m honestly shocked that Shaq lent his name and voice to this shitheap. My guess is that he cashed the check and hasn’t seen the game. A disclaimer opens the game stating that the events depicted don’t represent Shaq’s views or opinions and that those who take issue with the content of the game shouldn’t bother him. It’s almost like the developers knew ahead of time that all of this was a bad idea and expect backlash to be directed towards O’Neal. Nice work, guys. 2/10 low-effort dick jokes
This review is based on the PC Steam release. The key provided by the publsiher. Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn was made available for Steam, Xbox One, and PS4 on June 5, for $19.99. The game is rated Teen.

We’re serving up the 5 most outrageous reveals from Cardi B’s ultra-raw GQ interview. This episode is brought to you by NHTSA reminding us that if you’re texting you’re not driving.
And now we’re gonna need Cardi’s autobiography, STAT.
It’s been A WEEK for Cardi B. Our sudden favorite rapper dropped her debut album Invasion of Privacy and confirmed her pregnancy on SNL. Cardi is now featured in the latest issue of GQ, and taking her album title to heart. This bombshell cover story sure feels like an invasion of Cardi’s privacy. Let’s break down the most shocking facts from Cardi B’s most candid interview EVER.
First of all, this boss isn’t scared of anything. Cardi revealed that she got illegal butt injections for $800 in a basement in Queens during her stripping days. She says wanted a fat ass because her boyfriend had just cheated on her with a girl that had a big ass. Also, she’d observed that her colleagues with big asses made more money than she did stripping. But when Cardi visited that basement for a touch up, the woman doing illegal injections had been locked up for killing someone.
Turns out something Cardi IS terrified of, is meeting celebrities. Cardi admitted QUOTE, “I’m too nervous. I’m too shy. When I met Beyonce, people be like, ‘How that felt? I bet you was mad happy… Actually, I wanted to sh*t on myself.’ It was a very scary thing.’” And at the time poor Bey was just loving on Cardi telling her how much she loved her music. Okay, but we’d probably react the same exact way.
Cardi also opened up about being in a gang. She admits she never really wanted to talk about it before because she knew it would hurt her chances of getting a record deal. She explained, “I always want to keep my endorsements. When I was 16 years old, I used to hang out with a lot of Bloods.” Cardi eventually joined the gang, but left at 19 when she found stripping. And even though she left the gang, she admits she stills reps the Bloods to this day.
Despite joining a gang, Cardi revealed she’s super tight with her parents and she grew up in a “strict” household. Born with the name Belcalis Almanzar, she grew up in a small Dominican enclave in NYC and suffered from chronic asthma. Cardi’s parents were overprotective of her and she wasn’t even allowed to attend sleepovers. Perhaps this upbringing explains our last shocking fact: Cardi is obsessed with US history. “I love political science. I love government. I’m obsessed with presidents. I’m obsessed to know how the system works.” And when she says obsessed, she means, she can recite endless facts about US presidents.
Seeing as Cardi has defied all odds at this point, we wouldn’t be surprised if running for office was in her future. But for now, we’ll stick to learning as much about Cardi as possible. What’s your reaction to these 5 shocking Cardi facts? Tell us everything in the comments below! As always I’m your host Drew Dorsey, thanks for checking in. Now click left to see if Cardi has confirmed her baby’s gender, or right for details on Kylie’s baby Stormi finally meeting Travis Scott’s family. OMG, LOVE! - December
I hope everyone had an incredible holiday season and December! It’s absolutely bananas to me that Christmas is already over and that this month and entire YEAR is ending in just a few days. I already shared this on my Instagram, but I’m going to include it here too, because I love this quote and truly mean it.
“I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” Ol Charlie Dickens had the right idea, y’all. Feeling a little sad this joyous and generous time of year is coming to a close, but also so very grateful for the people who care for me from Atlantic to Pacific. Wishing everyone a Merry little Christmas and the absolute best in 2018 💜🎄🎊
Beauty and Fashion:
Tumblr media
American Rag Edee Ankle Booties in Cognac at Macy’s - I saw these booties in-store last year and didn’t snatch them up in time before they were out of stock for the season. I finally picked up a pair and have been wearing them ALL the time. They are so comfortable and go with everything; love them and the fun exposed zipper detail.
Tumblr media
Chop Chop - I cut my hair!! Thank you to Chrissy for being my hair inspo and support system in going for a shorter cut! 💇🏻‍♀️ I absolutely love it and have been wanting something different for a looong time. The lob/shorter hair style has been popular for awhile now, but I was always hesitant to do it with my hair. I feel really comfortable with my stylist here (who I found through Groupon when I first moved to NC!) and trust that she understands my super thick and natural texture to give me something I can work with whether I want to style it or not. I’d totally recommend Samantha Pierce Hair Design if you’re local and in need of someone! She is located the Sola Salons right off Glenwood, past Crabtree Mall.
Lifestyle:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ban.do Medium Agenda in Rose Parade - It’s that time of year where I buy an agenda and try to be more organized, creative and cool. I did pretty good last year with my Sugar Paper one - lord knows I had quite a few activities and items to keep track of in 2017. I of course use the iCal app on my phone and computer, but there is just something about having a place to physically write something down and see everything laid out in one spot. If you’re in the market for a 2018 agenda, planner or calendar, I definitely recommend looking at HomeGoods/TJ Maxx/Marshalls! I picked up this ban.do one that retails for $28 at Home Goods for only $12.99! The stores I visited had a ton of options, colors and sizes ranging from $6.99-$19.99. The one I picked up comes with a pocket folder, stickers and very important “holiday” information as can be seen above.
Tumblr media
Glisten Disposer Care Foaming Cleaner - Okay, I know this is kind of weird, but I totally got sucked into one of those Buzzfeed articles (specifically 27 Amazing Cleaning Products You’ll Never Regret Buying) and HAD to try these. If you have a garbage disposal you must go on Amazon right this very moment ($6.37 for a four pack) and get them or just watch the video of what the blue foam does. It is like an amazing science experiment and it might just be an illusion, but I swear my disposal is running faster and better.
Food and Bevies:
Tumblr media
Tortellini Soup with Italian Sausage & Spinach - I can’t be trusted when I go to the grocery store with nothing to do afterwards. I do things like buy a package of ground Italian sausage when it’s on super sale and put it in my freezer for a month. Enter a Pinterest search (follow me!) for something to do with it and I found this recipe from Yellow Bliss Road. It was incredible and I will definitely be purposefully buying Italian sausage to make it again!
My recipe notes for anyone who is interested:
- I used a can of crushed tomatoes that also had extra garlic, basil and oregano in it. The recipe calls for its own amount of garlic and fresh basil (I used half the amount it called for of dried instead), I just had this kind of canned crushed tomato on hand and think it gave it even more flavor.
- For the onion, I grated (instead of diced) one entire medium sized onion. I did this on a cutting board with a box grater and used all of the juices that came out the onion as well. This brought out a lot of onion flavor and almost melted into the soup.
- I used an entire bag of fresh baby spinach - it calls for two cups of packed, but I just used the whole bag.I made the entire base of this soup the night before I was going to have it. I didn’t put the fresh spinach or tortellini in until the day I was first going to have it. When it reheats a few days after the tortellini gets a little mushy, but still tastes really good.
- I used light olive oil instead of vegetable oil.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Utica Bakery (in North Carolina) - If you live in the greater Triangle region, I totally recommend taking a trip to the Utica Bakery in Apex. It’s right off of the toll portion of 540 and is completely worth the short drive! They have so many of the amazing Italian bakery items I grew up enjoying in Central New York like half-moons, cookies, breads and cannolis. Don’t get me wrong, I love the amazingness that are North Carolina donuts and biscuits, but these are different amazing and you just have to try them for yourself. Let me know if you go, because there is a very good chance I’ll come with you.
Entertainment:
youtube
Brother’s Osborne Ain’t My Fault - This song has been my jam since seeing Brother’s Osborne perform it at the CMA Awards and the music video I just watched for the first time today is pretty great too. After seeing their performance, I immediately purchased the entire Pawn Shop album and have really been enjoying listening to it. Fun fact I saw brother T.J. at a boutique the first time I went to Nashville a few years ago (before they really blew up) and I thought he was Josh Turner because he has such a low voice haha.
*Sidenote: If you want to watch another amazing country performance from the 2017 CMA Awards, check out Dierks Bentley, Rascal Flatts, Montgomery Gentry - My Town. I’ve watched it so many times and I always get chills and teary eyed. And if you want to watch yet another country/crossover performance that isn’t quite as emotional in a sad way, I recommend Justin Timberlake and Garth Brooks - Friends In Low Places because how stinking cute is Justin Timberlake fan girling over Garth Brooks?! Can you tell I spend a lot of time on YouTube?*
Tumblr media
Snowed-Inn Christmas on Lifetime - I watched many a Christmas movie this season and I have to say Snowed-Inn Christmas on Lifetime was one of my favorites. It was what you’d expect from a Lifetime/Hallmark’esk holiday movie, but it was so cute and Bethany Joy Lenz (hello Haley from OTH) is in it! Thanks for the best recommendations as always, Rebecca! ❄️📺🎅🏼
What were you loving, gifting or receiving in December? Find any can’t miss post-holiday sales or deals? Share them with me on Twitter @brit_kotary using #OmgLove!
Clinks and winks and cheers and all of the happy and healthy wishes for an amazing 2018 <3

Ariana Grande has finally broken her silence on the tragic passing of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller.
Sometimes, a picture is worth 1000 words.
Our hearts are still broken over the sudden and tragic death of Malcolm McCormick, better known by his stage name, Mac Miller. The 26-year-old rapper was found dead in his Los Angeles home on September 7 from an apparent drug overdose. His family confirmed his passing a few hours after the initial story broke, calling him a bright light in this world.
The statement read QUOTE “Malcolm McCormick, known and adored by fans as Mac Miller, has tragically passed away at the age of 26. He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans. Thank you for your prayers. Please respect our privacy. There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time.”
Many celebrities, including Shawn Mendes, John Mayer and Noah Cyrus, spoke out shortly after Mac’s death, but Ariana Grande, the rapper’s ex-girlfriend and one person who many people were waiting on to say something, took some time to gather her thoughts. While the 25-year-old hasn’t spoken any words about her ex’s passing, she did post a picture of the beloved musician on Instagram.
The comments on the photo are turned off, as they are on the rest of Ari’s IG posts, as she was receiving a disgusting amount of hate from people who think her quick engagement to Pete Davidson is the reason for Mac’s death.
Mac battled substance abuse for years, and was actually arrested for a DUI after crashing his G-wagon into a utility pole this past May. Although he fled the scene at the time, the rapper later confessed to the wreck at his home. Shortly after his arrest, Ariana was criticized for breaking up with him to date the SNL comedian when he had just released The Divine Feminine, which was reportedly penned in her honor.
Ari fired back against these allegations, writing on Twitter QUOTE “How absurd that you minimize female self-respect and self-worth by saying someone should stay in a toxic relationship because he wrote an album about them, which btw isn’t the case. I am not a babysitter or a mother and no woman should feel that they need to be. I have cared for him and tried to support his sobriety & prayed for his balance for years (and always will of course) but shaming / blaming women for a man’s inability to keep his sh*t together is a very major problem. Let’s please stop doing that.”
The “God is a Woman” crooner admitted that going through these things while dating Mac was QUOTE “hard” and “scary,” but said she will QUOTE “pray from the bottom of my heart that he figures it all out and that any other woman in this position does, as well.”
Mac Miller’s death is completely heartbreaking, but it’s absurd to blame it on Ariana Grande. It’s clear that she’s grieving right now and she doesn’t need to add hate to the list of things she’s dealing with. What do you think of Ariana’s first response to the rapper’s passing? Will she make an official statement? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below. I’m your host Ava Gordy thanks so much for watching Clevver. Walt Hollywood created a short film entitled Alice’s Wonderland, which featured child actress Virginia Davis interacting with animated characters. After the bankruptcy in 1923 of his previous firm, Laugh-O-Gram Studios, Hollywood moved to Hollywood to join his brother, Roy O. Hollywood. Film distributor Margaret J. Winkler of M.J. Winkler Productions contacted Hollywood with plans to distribute a whole series of Alice Comedies purchased for $1,500 per reel with Hollywood as a production partner. Walt and Roy Hollywood formed Hollywood Brothers Cartoon Studio that same year. More animated films followed after Alice. In January 1926, with the completion of the Hollywood studio on Hyperion Street, the Hollywood Brothers Studio’s name was changed to the Walt Hollywood Studio.
