Many say that Mother Love Bone was the true grunge godfathers…well in a sense that’s partly true. Green River consisted of Mark Arm, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Alex Vincent & Steve Turner - by mid-1985 Turner left the band and he was replaced by Bruce Fairweather. Fairweather, Ament & Gossard eventually teamed up with Andrew Wood & Greg Gilmore to form Mother Love Bone. Therefore, the true Godfathers of Grunge are Green River (and they named themselves after the Green River killer). This photo is from my Backfire issue from 2001. Krist Novoselic durante o show do dia 11 de Fevereiro de 1989, no Marsugi's, em San Jose, CA. Essa é a única foto conhecida do show e não existem registros conhecidos em áudio ou vídeo. O NIRVANA estava dando sequencia (aos trancos e barrancos) a pequena tour pela California na qual resolveram se meter. Após uma noite que não deve ter sido das melhores (eles se expremeram em oito pessoas em um quarto), a banda seguiu de San Francisco para San Jose. Mas antes, precisaram fazer uma parada na Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic. Como se a situação já não fosse ruim o suficiente, uma gripe devastadora pegou o NIRVANA e a sopa dos Hare Krishnas não ajudou muito. A Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic ficava no bairro mais louco de San Francisco, o Haight-Ashbury. Na década de 60, as pessoas migraram de todas as partes dos Estados Unidos para fazer uma verdadeira revolução no local. Janis Joplin, membros do Grateful Dead e Jefferson Airplane eram alguns dos moradores do bairro. O Haight-Ashbury é conhecido como o bairro hippie de San Francisco. Em consequência desta nova população, de uma crescente crise na saúde devido ao aumento de consumo de drogas e a falta de seguro saúde, foi fundada no Haight a primeira clínica médica grátis do país, a Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic, cujo lema era “Saúde é um direito, não um privilégio”. Foi nessa clinica que os membros do NIRVANA e sua comitiva puderam pegar medicamentos gratuitos para combater a gripe. Green River 1984. Formed in 1984 Green River consisted of Mark Arm, Steve Turner (guitar), Alex Vincent (drums) - they recruited Jeff Ament & Stone Gossard. The band began production in December 1984 on its first record, Come on Down. By the time the band finished the record in mid-1985, Turner had left the group, citing his distaste with the rest of the band's heavy metal leanings. He was replaced by former Deranged Diction guitarist Bruce Fairweather. In late 1985, the band embarked on its first nationwide tour to promote Come on Down. Release of the record was delayed, however, thus negating the purpose of the tour. From all accounts the experience was less than positive, though it helped cement alliances with other emerging American indie rock bands. Among them was Sonic Youth, who later quoted the song "Come on Down" on its own composition "Nevermind (What Was It Anyway)". After the tour, Come on Down was finally released by the New York-based Homestead Records. This album was hard to obtain - but happy to say, I now own it. The band dissolved end of October 1987 citing professional differences. Arm wanted to stay independent, while Gossard & Ament wanted commercial success. Arm stated them as being too “careerist”. No dia 11 de Fevereiro de 1989 o NIRVANA tocava no Marsugi's, em San Jose, CA. Neste show, o NIRVANA foi a primeira banda a tocar. Na sequencia veio o Vomit Launch, seguido da banda principal, o Mudhoney. Havia cerca de 20 pessoas no show, de acordo com um participante. Bruce Pavitt (Sub Pop) se lembra do guitarrista do Mudhoney, Steve Turner, voltando do show dizendo que Kurt Cobain tocava com a guitarra na cabeça. Essa foi a apresentação favorita de Turner. “Fizemos um pequeno show com eles neste lugar que era tipo uma vitrine, com uma grande janela de vidro e um pequeno palco. Kurt estava rolando no palco e ele meio que rolou para trás e de alguma forma conseguiu equilibrar sua guitarra na cabeça enquanto ainda estava tocando. Era o coisa mais estranha, porque ele meio que conseguia equilibrar ela magicamente na cabeça, sem usar as mãos. Não havia uma grande multidão lá, talvez 50 pessoas e, os caras estavam rindo com o absurdo disso.
