Steve looked comfortable where he had dozed off at his desk. His arms crossed over his chest, boots propped up lazily. His Stetson was tipped down to block out the light bleeding in through the windows of the Sheriff's office. Steve's peace, however, like most days, could only last so long before he was so very rudely startled from his mid-afternoon nap. He jolted awake at the shouting that ensued as Alexander Pierce clambered into the station, Tony hot on his tail. The sheriff barely resisted the urge to roll his eyes at his mate and the man who owned most of the town spitting curses and crude remarks at one another.

It’s been five years.

Tony is softer than he remembers, in navy blue wool, silver in his hair and beard, laugh lines deeper around his eyes and mouth, holding onto his little girl. Steve thinks he must look rougher than Tony remembers, from the way Tony holds her tighter and steps back from him when he shuts the door of his car, as if looking for an escape.

As if he could get away from Steve.

“Pete, we need to set dad up with Mr. Rogers!” said Harley excitedly. “Think about it, they’d be perfect for each other! “Harley, this is a stupid idea,” Peter interrupted. “You don’t know that Mr. Rogers is into men. And even if he was, what do you want to do, lock them in a closet together?”

Tony’s suitors send him roses and exotic orchids and genetically modified blossoms that bloom in impossible colors no one could ever hope to find in nature. His mother makes sure there’s always a fresh bouquet of irises in his room—they usually come from her own garden, but he still doesn’t know how she manages to find them even in the middle of winter.

And Steve… Steve gives him daisies.

“So,” he says in the end, attracting Steve’s gaze towards him. “Is that everything you wanted?” It’s only then —when he swears he can feel Steve’s breath tickling his cheek— that he realizes how close they actually are. So close the hunger in those blue eyes is undeniable, just as it’s undeniable Steve is no longer looking at him in the eye, but rather to his lips. “Not really,” Steve says, voice raw and thick, as his eyes move quickly to Tony’s annular finger before returning to his lips. Tony tilts his head and asks, in a tone that sounds more like a dare, “then what are you waiting for?” Steve doesn’t actually answer; it’s Tony that makes an educated guess as he tries to grasp for air once Steve dips his head and drowns in his lips.

Or, Steve visits Tony after five years and it's not the salvation of the world he's after.

“For what it’s worth, this is not how I imagined our first Christmas going,” Steve groans from where he’s sitting on the floor. It’s hard wood, and Tony knows it simply cannot be comfortable sitting that way. Even super soldiers aren’t immune to backaches, surely, and after the day they’ve both had, Tony wants nothing more than to lay right there beside him, ice and snow and ruined Christmas and failed mission be damned. 

Or, after a mission goes wrong, Steve and Tony find themselves snowed in at a cabin in the middle of nowhere. On Christmas Eve.

3. What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written? The stevetony fic I wrote a few years ago immediately post-Endgame How Light Carries on Endlessly, it's one of the only fics where I feel I executed my image perfectly and the only fic I ever cried writing.

12. Do you have a playlist for your current WIP(s)? Share it! For my Spain 2016 podium curse WIP I'm just listening to Strange Love (Halsey)/Hallucinate (Dua Lipa) on a loop, and it's working wonders so not changing that! For my F!Charles WIP I don't have a playlist but a few that I've been listening to from a few different artists are: Silk Chiffon, gold rush, Radio, Constellations, A World Alone, Pretty Girls. Also a LOT of The Crown soundtrack, especially Fairytale and Your Majesty.

18. What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve written in a fic? A bit longer than a line, but that honour goes a bit from my first Lestappen fic fièvre dans les yeux, I just think I really popped off with this part.

Communicating is harder in English, especially when his mind and body are in conflict. That’s why Charles has always preferred sex with people who know French, who can understand the slurred ramblings and half-sentences that tend to spill out when he’s keyed up. 

Max doesn’t know French, but he doesn’t need to. There’s a language deeper than their mother tongues, and they’re both fluent in it. The weight of destiny in the shape of a trophy, the taste of trento on top of a podium, the hum of the car beneath them and the way gravity shifts as they approach a corner.

Something about Steve Roger’s presence had always rubbed Tony Stark the wrong way. He was the farm boy employed on his farm. He was quiet. Ever helpful. But he stared at Tony. Whenever they crossed paths, he just stared. 

In silent judgement? Contemplation? Boredom? He didn’t know. He just always seemed so placid. Whenever Tony asked him to perform a task, he only ever responded with “As you wish.” No more, no less. Every. Single. Time.

It itched under his skin, making him feel restless. He wanted to get under Steve’s skin instead. Get some kind of reaction. Any kind, really. 

It became a game, of sorts. A pleasurable pastime. Could anything elicit another reaction? A crack in his perfect facade.

“Farm boy, polish my horse’s saddle. I want to see my face shining in it by morning.” He tried to be as insolent as possible. 

“As you wish,” he acquiesced, like he always did. Like he’d do anything he asked, no matter how annoying he was. 

Tony turned on his heel and strode away, and he could feel Steve’s eyes on him as he went.

Some days later he came across Steve chopping wood. His arm muscles flexed with every chop. Tony wandered over with purpose. “Farm boy, there’s a hole in the southeast fence, fix it.” 

Steve looked up, meeting Tony’s brown eyes with his piercing blue. Tony was being an ass, and found he didn’t want to, all of a sudden. “Please,” he added softly. 

“As you wish,” Steve responded, and as he tilted his head in Tony’s direction, eyes still on him as he did so, Tony heard it. 

There was this emphasis in the way Steve said as you wish. A hidden meaning in his voice that he’d been blind to before.

Startled, Tony turned and walked away, but he paused after only a few steps. He turned his head back to meet Steve’s gaze, and he was amazed by what he saw. Steve’s eyes were normally tranquil. Still water. 

But now he realised why his neck would prickle when Steve watched him walk away. His eyes were a turbulent ocean, a vibrant flame. It all clicked into place. Steve was in love with him. 

The way he watched him. His conscientiousness regardless of Tony’s bad temperament. Every time he said as you wish what he meant was I love you. 

He didn’t know what to do with this new information. Something? Nothing? 

But it all became much clearer the day he realised that he truly loved him back. He’d been tinkering away at his smithing table for hours, and was now just checking over the nails he’d made for imperfections. 

He heard a sound, and glanced over at the doorway of the hut, noticing that Steve had brought in some firewood and was already on his way out. Steve knew how focused Tony could get when he was creating something, he didn’t like to be distrurbed when he was on a roll. 

Funny how Steve knew so much about Tony without him ever asking a single question. He just noticed. 

Tony’s realisation wasn’t a dramatic moment of revelation. It was more of a slowly building awareness that he cared about Steve. His thoughts were occupied by him. He loved him. He really, truly, did. 

“Farm boy,” he called, dropping the nail in his hand to the table. 

Steve paused, turning his head back in his direction, hand resting on the door frame. 

Tony looked around the room, searching for something to… aha! “Grab me that cloth?” He asked, not demanded. 

Steve walked towards Tony, his face radiating intent, eyes never glancing away even when he grabbed the damp cloth he asked for. Rather than handing it over, he picked up Tony’s hands and wiped them clean with the utmost gentleness and care. “As you wish,” he whispered. 

Tony couldn’t help the beaming smile that came across his face, and even when he tried to reign it in it would not be fully contained. 

They went for a walk that evening at sunset, and Steve finally started to talk. He told him how he’d felt tongue-tied around Tony, and he never knew what to say. He didn’t seem to have that problem anymore, talking at length about his life before they met and his dreams for the future. His shy reserve disappearing the more he shared. 

They kissed under the fading glow of the sun.

He takes him because he’s the Captain who holds Brooklyn and Manhattan and half of Queens. He takes him because Howard has been getting uppity and needs to be taught a lesson, needs to be reminded that he works for Steve, despite all his money. He takes him because there’s a cold, cruel light in Howard’s eyes when he looks at his son, and Steve understands “tough” love better than anyone would expect him to. He has a million reasons as to why he takes Tony, but the truth of the matter comes down to this:

He takes Tony because the first time he saw him, Steve knew he was meant to be his.

My fifth favorite fic I wrote in 2022 was calling my bluff on all my usual tricks because of many reasons, the most important one being how much fun I had writing it AND the lovely fanart Sagana created for it! I wrote it for the stevetony silver fox mini bang, and I had a blast 🥰

My fourth favorite fic I wrote in 2022 was heads over paws in love, once again because of how mucho fun the whole process was AND because of Mairi's stunning fanart that inspired it for the 2022 Reverse Big Bang.

My third favorite fic was love me like a sinner! Its existence is thanks to our lovely Meidui, who left a few months ago. She and I started talking about Steve's endgame jacket and how it seemed like a home-wreacking aesthetic. So I wrote that fic and she wrote hers and it was great seeing how similar and different our views were about the same initial concept ❤️

My second favorite fic was forged on low heat because it reminds me of how amazing july was as a month. I wrote it for the SteveTony Games, in which I joined Team Marry thanks to Cassie (Meidui) and this specific fic was a gift for MassiveSpaceWren, who then created an amazing fanart for it. To me, that fic symbolizes the beauty of fandom, specifically the stony fandom 🥺

And finally, my favorite fic I wrote this past year is this is always yours in the end! There's many reasons I love this fic (the theme about going after your dreams, the way I tried telling it like a fairytale), but the one I need to mention because it's the most important to me is the fact that it was a gift for @perlmutt-perl, who's the best thing fandom has given me in the year I've been active here. She's the kindest and funniest person I know in this fandom, and this is my excuse to say it one more time 🥰🥰
