Grievance Committee
The address given for their “Demo 88” cassette in Sterling Heights, MI 48310. Source: MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL, issue no. 75, Aug., 1989. Street view date: Aug., 2018. Sample quote from the review: “Snotnose punk that reminds me of early LA stuff: Angry Samoans, Circle Jerks, etc. Not original by any means, just fierce blasts of momentum and energy." (WG).

During the Michigan trip, I visited two former employers of mine - Meijer and MJR. I reference both places heavily in my short stories.

I didn't go inside MJR (had no time), but I did go inside the Meijer. It had been renovated since the last time I've been in Michigan. I hardly recognized the store. I did spot a few familiar faces.
Drove by my childhood house (talk about a memory-trip), and finally saw, in-person, the infamous Sterling Heights butthole.

I wish I had more time in Sterling Heights. Friends and childhood landmarks I wanted to catch up with. Perhaps, another time...

The last shot was filmed in my old neighborhood in Sterling Heights, Michigan. I saw it in theaters with Karii Lynn the following year. She whispered in my ear a little bit into the film, "isn't that in your neighborhood?!?" "Holy shit," I whispered back!
I took this picture the summer before I relocated to Florida.

Okay, like I told you, all you can do is pass it on to someone else.

Women's History Event at the Library!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm so glad I went to this!
Women's history is slowly being erased, so go to programs like this.
Myra Wolfgang help fight for Michigan to have a minimum wage law. She was inspired by the sit-in strike at Flint's GM plant. So, she did just that at the Woolworth's she worked at as a clerk. After eight days, the manager relented. She could easily pass for my maternal grandmother.
Lisette Denison Forth was one of the first African American property owners in the state. She was a slave for life, thanks to judge Augustus Woodward 's ruling. She spoke French, but never went to school. She spoke another language, too. She helped slaves escape through the underground railroad. She also was one of the first slaves in the state to escape slavery with her fellow slaves. Thinking of changing Woodward Avenue to Denison Forth avenue, knowing August Woodward's stance on slavery.
Laura Smith Haviland was one of the states first female property owners. This was in 1847, a decade after Michigan became a state.
Agatha Biddle was a native woman who not only owned property, she fought for Native American rights and for women's rights. She also took care of sick and orphaned Native American children on what is now Mackinac Island. In 1970, she inspired Indigenous women who were imprisoned in Canada to chant and sing and fight for their rights.
Aliya Hassen fought for Arab American rights and for feminism. Perhaps she was one of the first feminists. She was a single mother in a time when it was unheard of. She was in an arranged marriage to a man who was 30 when she was 15. She got out of that marriage, and came to Detroit from South Dakota. She used examples from the Quran to prove her points, because why do what is expected when your making history? She was a dancer, singer, community activist, women's activist, gardener . Through her activism, she founded ACCESS, and started a community garden. She even marched with Malcom X! She was what we would call woke.
Grace Lee Boggs was not just a housewife. She came to Detroit via Rhode Island. She was married to a black man. She fought for women's rights, Asian American rights, and black rights. She helped organize the march down Woodward Avenue with Martin Luther King, Jr. Many Detroiters are familiar with many parts of what became the famous I Have A Dream speech. She was also a civil rights activist. Like Aliya Hassen, she was woke before woke was a thing.
Then, we have the presenter.
