Anberlin - Vega

Alternative rock band Anberlin is one of those bands that I like as a whole, but I only really like certain albums from. A lot of their albums tend to sound the same, but they’re a good and reliable band. I can’t say that I’ve cared much about them in recent years, but I did listen to one of the EPs they dropped within the last couple of years. It looks like they dropped a new album recently, entitled Vega, that not only combines both EPs, but has a couple of new songs that feature Matty Mullins on vocals.

Mullins is from Memphis May Fire, a band whose debut album from 2009 is their best album, but they’ve devolved into a generic and boring hard-rock / metalcore band, but he filled in for Anberlin vocalist Stephen Christian on tour, and I guess is technically part of the band, so they gave him a couple of songs on this thing. I wasn’t originally interested in this record, but I thought I’d check it out, because I’m in the mood for some new music, so I added this to the list. I knew this combined the last couple of EPs they put out, but I only listened to the last one, so what did I think of Vega?

Honestly, this record follows the same thoughts I’ve had about most of their stuff — not bad, but repetitive and sounds like everything they’ve done. Even the songs with Matty Mullins don’t do much for me, but they aren’t bad. I don’t know, this album just feels like almost an hour of the same song, and that’s how I felt about the EP I listened to last year. I don’t think I talked about it, but I didn’t have much to say about it. I don’t have a lot to say here, especially where there’s not much to say. Christian sounds good, especially all these years later, but that’s about it.

This is just a generic alt-rock album with some ambient instrumentation, and a slight dash of post-hardcore, but that’s it. It didn’t need to be 52 minutes, but unlike some long albums, this feels its length. I guess this isn’t technically a bad album, but I feel like every song sounds the same, and it just makes for a very long experience. Maybe check this out if you’re a fan, as I think fans are going to enjoy this a lot more, but as someone that’s respected them more than I’ve liked them, I think I’ll pass, even with Matty Mullins being apart of the band now.

Well, one of them guessed right. It probably helped that Michael did two previous shows with Christian, during which Christian fangirled about Falsettos and Marvin. It is really cute that he did think of him.
