ya paranormal fantasy book series that were released around 2008-2013? that unapologetically existed just so young people could have fun with vampires and werewolves and angels? and which knew they weren't actually good but were still memorable and allowed for escapism? and weren't shackled to booktok or bookstagram and money grabs?
yeah, idc those were the good days.

Mrs. Miller’s Antics
My old literature teacher in seventh grade was a gentle soul with a unique charm. Her name was Mrs. Miller, and I can see her face clearly to this day; I can see every wrinkle, every wink of her toffee eyes, every time her worn hands waved through the air like she was casting a protection spell on me. She was somewhat eccentric, and her aged face was a testament to her years of wisdom. When I was being bullied, she’d let me scurry into her crowded classroom during lunch where I could hide in the cabinets, books, and disarrays of ungraded work.
One afternoon, my bully came to look for me. I squeezed my tiny body behind a turquoise filing cabinet and crushed myself against the brick wall next to a spider. When the bully asked Mrs. Miller if I was there, she simply replied, “I haven’t seen her.”
I was thirteen, and Mrs. Miller was my favorite person in the world.
It was around this age that I realized what a deep, ardent passion I had for the literary world. Math was numbers, science was logic, but literature? It was the study of humanity.
It was resurrecting dead voices and embracing each others’ pains. Literature helped me understand worlds outside of my small corner of Albuquerque; I read stories from Nashik, Puebla, Ireland, and even Hogwarts. The characters I read about became close friends to me; I felt like I truly understood them, and as silly as it sounds, I think those characters saw me, too. I was so gifted in her class that if I nuzzled my face into a dusty book from her bookshelf while she was instructing the class, she’d leave me alone because she understood that I already knew the content.
I just needed to meet a new friend.
My desire for literature, for magic, started here. I picked up every book I could, and my father, who was so enthusiastic about shoving me in my bedroom to be quiet for a little while, offered to buy me books as long as I’d actually read them. My first Barnes and Noble trip is still ironed into my memory. I had never seen so many books in one place under an artificial tree. And fuck, did I read them.
And read.
And read.
The Warriors series by Erin Hunter.
The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare (my first literary crush. Oof.)
Blue is for Nightmares by Laurie Faria Stolarz.
Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.
Eragon by Christopher Paolini.
The Tale of Desperaux by Kate DiCamillo.
The Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer.
The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead.
The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan.
Stardust by Neil Gaiman.
The Princess Bride by William Goldman.
The Merlin Prophecy books by T.H. White.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
The Angel of Death by Alane Ferguson.
The Night World series by L.J. Smith.
And so, so many more.

2023 Reading Roundup (44 books, Predominately Romantasy)
I graduated from university and started my big girl job this year, take a look at what I was reading as I passed these milestones! I read FOURTY FOUR books this year and I’m so proud :)
Vampire Academy Series: Richelle Mead
Vampire Academy, Frost Bite, Shadow Kiss, Blood Promise, Spirit Bound, Last Sacrifice
10/10. Comfort books. Love the arc, love the direction. Slow burn mentor/student. Set in modern day. Romantasy.
Dune & Dune: Messiah: Frank Herbert
Dune is a 10/10. Incredibly worldbuilding. Anyone with any interest in sci-fi should read. Messiah went a lot quicker, less complicated and fleshed. 5/10 I didn’t really enjoy it. Maybe I’ll push through one day…
King of Scars Duology: Leigh Bardugo
King of Scars, Rule of Wolves
I love love love Six of Crows, and I didn’t feel like reading Shadow and Bone just yet, so read King of Scars. 7/10 I probably should have read Shadow and Bone but now I probably never will, basically got the gist of it. Didn’t have a lot of background but the story is rly good. Love love love Zoya!!
A Court of Thorns and Roses Series: Sarah J Maas
A Court of Thorns and Roses, a Court of Mist and Fury, a Court of Wrath and Ruin, a Court of Frost and Starlight, a Court of Silver Flames
12/10. Perfect down to the last minute detail. Epic fantasy, worldbuilding that had my jaw on the floor. Must read.
Fourth Wing: Rebecca Yarros
9/10 quick and easy read. Loved the dragons in this one. I’m a sucker for Enemies to Lovers so I basically exactly what i signed up for. Little scared for series though… ahh!
From Blood and Ash Series: Jennifer L. Armentrout
From Blood and Ash, Kingdom of Flesh and Fire, Crown of Gilded Bones, a War of Two Queens, a Soul of Ash and Blood
4/10. First 2 books were really interesting, third one actually totally lost me and in the middle of the fourth I ended up reading all of the Cruel Prince books in the middle of it lol. Determined to not have a DNF this year so I came back, finished it, and read the god-forsaken Soul of Ash and Blood. 0/10 I hated every second of that book. It’s a complete retelling with maybe 2 or 3 chapters that are actually interesting. Yes, I know I read all 5. No, I have no technical regrets. Take that as you will.
The Cruel Prince: Holly Black
The Cruel Prince, the Wicked King, the Queen of Nothing
Good, no spice obvi and super popular but I loved Jude’s character and was obsessed with the politics. Super intriguing I blew through these. 8/10
Verity: Colleen Hoover
6/10, read it in like a day and a half but I don’t rly like thrillers, they scare me lol. It was good tho and my first Colleen Hoover book, not sure if I would read another one but I did really like this one and the ending was super crazy. read it as a palate cleanser after Cruel Prince. I’ve realized if I don’t have a non-high fantasy palate cleanser I fall into a reading slump lol.
Once Upon a Broken Heart Series: Stephanie Garber
Once Upon a Broken Heart, The Ballad of Never After, A Curse for True Love
OUABH is 9/10, honestly such a wonderful book, perfectly captures the hopeless romantic of Eva and allure of Jacks, but TBONA is SHOWSTOPPING!!! 12/10. So amazing, love the storyline, never bored, such good romance it’s the most well written romance I’ve read in a while- screeching halt for ACFTL- I’ve put my thoughts on this blog but it felt so empty compared to the lifeblood in the first 2 books in the series. Definitely worth the read though.
Throne of Glass Series: Sarah J. Maas
Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire, Queen of Shadows, Empire of Storms, Tower of Dawn, Kingdom of Ash
Nothing to be said that’s not already been said. Amazing. I love sprawling epics. Not a ton of romance and tbh I’m not a Rowan girly. Defending Chaol til I die tho. 10/10
Twilight: Stephanie Meyer
6/10. I’ve written about this one but I just felt like it was super juvenile for my tastes, I was expecting to like it more and it was just kinda eh. Needed a little more something something but that is of course a me problem. I just think I am not a big fan of YA anymore.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue: V. E. Schwab
Wonderful story, totally lust for life after reading, made me so excited about the ending. I felt like there was so much more to be told which is like exactly how I wanna feel reading a book. 8/10
Divine Rivals: Rebecca Ross
At first I was not rocking with the pacing, I feel like this book could have been a lot longer. But when I finished it I actually was more on board with the speed and it was super sweet. Good found family aspect. 7/10 will for sure be reading the next one.
Plated Prisoner Series: Raven Kennedy
Gild, Glint, Gleam, Glow, Gold
I love love love LOVE these books! Pacing is amazing, you can see exactly how Auren’s trauma affects her character, Malina has gained a fan, just huge fantastic series here. Cannot wait until the last one is out. 10/10
Thanks for reading! Feel free to drop me a book review for 2024! Happy new year everyone!

SJM interview is today for HOFAS so there’s something for us! But with Feyre stans on here saying that they don’t think we’ll get anything in this book for her character (No Major power use moments, No POV, No bonus story, No High King or Queen arc) and that supposedly “Rhys will be the focus out of them two” has kinda killed my excitement for anything related to ACOTAR is this world merging book not gonna lie..
Of course it’ll mainly be about CC characters! But I at least had hope that we’d get Feyre x Bryce or Feyre x Bryce x Aelin moments but since no one else thinks so..i’ve felt kinda bummed about it as a whole this past week or so
Still exciting to get new content in January and see what happens nonetheless! I just don’t feel as optimistic now I guess. Sorry to be a party pooper in this ask 😮‍💨 But some people have ruined my optimism a bit. Then another year for her next book if we get nothing from Feyre in this one? I need a series to fall back on in case I have to leave SJM behind if she doesn’t give us any Feyre soon so give me rec’s and advice please!
Don't fret my dear anon, I am sure we will get Feyre content but olease remember, it's an hosab interview so we won't get any acotar news. Don't expect anything acotar accept maybr "hehe rhys was there"
I don't thibk the crossover will play a huge part in hofas so don't get your hopes up. Its still about Bryce and Hunt, not about acotar. But I hope we will get feysand and especially Feyre in the next acotar book
I personally am so excited for the interview, I l9ve SJM interviews (because I'm delulu)
I'm sure if we eilk see Aelin we will get Feyre x Bryce x Aelin. It eould be dumb to exclude one
