My problem with Viv recasting for Hazbin isn't just that she abandoned the very talented and passionate people who helped her make it big.

What irritates me even more is that they got unneccessarily replaced by (mostly) famous actors, who ended up either not fitting their characters in the slightest or just doing impressions of the pilot cast, while being up to thousands of times more costly.

Not only is it such a slap to the face to the original cast, even if they got let go a few years back, but it is such an unneccessary waste of Hazbin's budget.

Like, why the hell are we listening to Stephanie Beatriz sounding painfully bored, with her singing sounding completely different from her speaking, while she gets payed tens of thousands of dollars, when Viv could have either kept Monica or, if she found one, choose a new indie VA she thought SUITED the character better and saved quite a lot of money. Why are we listening to Blake Roman strain his voice to hell and back, trying to do an impression of Michael's Angel? Why does Amir Tamil literally sound like a higher-pitch Edward Bosco?

This just reeks of not-so-cheap publicity stunt. And not a good or a well-thought-out one.

The only solution I can think of in the present is, Jesus Christ, get Richard Horvitz out of voice directing role, because, while I'm sure he is a nice guy irl and a great VA, he absolutely sucks at voice direction and a LOT of issues with voice acting in HH could easily be fixed by someone more competent taking up the role (evidenced by the fact that Encanto shows that Stephanie can absolutely rock at voice acting).

Tho I'm not sure abt how they're handling the ah- more serious bits of Angel's character. It is WAYYYYYY to early to tell and I think Loser wasn't like. Trying to downplay the situation. But the writers better have been careful moving foreward bcuz I can def see a world where Angel's arc goes very wrong very fast-

Also while we're criticizing: wasn't a fan of the pacing. Especially in episode two. Like I can look past it, but the way they breeze past some plot points kinda bugged me

I think this show does a really good job balancing the focus on the whole cast! These first 4 episodes seem to be pretty Charlie, Angel and kind of Vaggie heavy but everybody still gets their fair share of attention!

Brutha. I've always known this but like these two are surface level similar yet so SO SO SOOOO different its terrifying.

Question might be, why tf am I comparing the r*pist and the beautiful, gorgeous, fantastic, inspiring, humble, generous, smeggsy, former angel?

Simply because they are both moth demon's that speak Spanish. It's a bit too specific. And rlly that's kind of all I have right now. Sure, you could say "erm actually, Vaggie isn't a moth demon 🤓" and ur probably right. But if she's not, why is it that in her redesign for the show they lean into the moth hair? It's look much MUCH more moth than in the pilot. So if Viv wanted to stray away from the moth theme, why make it look more like that? She may not he exactly a moth demon but she does have intentional moth features. Perhaps Vaggie just disguised herself like that, either way, still a connection..

I would get it if one of them were in helluva boss jst as a way to recycle and make room or whatever. But no, they are in the same show, same world, same ring of hell, same city(I think). It's a weird connection and I kind of don't want it to exist. Like at all. Because if they are connected I can't think of any other way they are except that Val could be a fallen angel. Which I CANT imagine. Unless Vaggie is like, a winner that became an exterminator, but genuinely that would be a bit complex. But what isn't in this show. Then again, Adam said he created her, or that could be a metaphor for that Vaggie was never noticed as a human and just brushed off to the side so therefore Adam "created" her (created a name and image/status of her). But that's unlikely, I don't they would be that smart lmao.

Personality wise, they both have anger issues. Pilot Vaggie and show Valentino are more alike but show Vaggie is still somewhat spicy. They also both have hot voices, sorry not sorry, like fuck Val (not literally) but his voice is BAZINGA 😍 and I'm a simp for Stephanie Beatriz. I'm a simple gal.

Design wise they have rare commonalities. They are both heavily red but thats everyone in the show it make my eyes bleed. But. A weird thing someone pointed out in a slideshow on tiktok is that show Valentino has white stripes on his hips. Me personally I'm not sure what to think about it really. Like I mean it IS a new detail that spawned AFTER the pilot and it is like... on the EXACT place. But like, it's such a weird thing to include when it's such a common pose yknow?

Also the X's on the boobs are so sensual I cannot be the only one. And ykno Val is the king of sensual (🤮)

Maybe you could be asking, "if Val and Vaggie r connected jst because they are moth demons then that jst means that anyone that are the same species are somehow tied to eachother huh? 🤓" like Angel Dust and Zestial. But what I think differs from that is the fact these two have actual big similarities apart from jst the fact they are moths. Like what I just explained, personality, design, both speak Spanish. While Angel Dust and Zestial are only just both spiders. Angel's reason for being a spider is due to the ykno, "web of crime" thing. And Zesty man? Idk he probably got bit and fucking died by a poisonous spider. I mean, health shit wasn't exactly great back in his ye olde time.

Plus this fits Vaggie so. SO much. If my theory that Vaggie just disguised herself as a moth to blend in then that would be a good connection to the entire moth motif. Love, I don't even need to explain.

It can fit Val too if you think abt the disguise part a bit. Like he disguises himself as this charming and calming figure to avoid suspicion and lure victims... fucking creepy 🤮

Here is like. ONE image I could find that wasn't too blurry. Like I wouldn't say it's heavy moth but I think if you asked me what insect she was based off I would guess moth in like a few minutes. From what I know there aren't any previous old beta designs of Valentino, so he was likely made for the show specifically.

Overall, they are both sexy Spanish speakers who are moth demons, in the same show, oddly specific connected design choices, and have some anger issues.

You talked about why Vaggie's songs don't hit in a post before, and I had the same thought but about all her voice lines, not just her songs. To me, there's never any emotion. There's no energy or conviction. Nothing that tells us anything about this character.

At first I thought it was an issue with her voice actress. But then I remembered, this is Stephanie Beatriz we're talking about. Not only an amazing actress, but a damn good VA too. She voiced Gina and Mirabel, both characters with a lot of emotion and effort put into them and their songs.

Gina is even apathetic like Vaggie is, but her voice lines still hit. I sincerely doubt the problem is with Stephanie herself. I think it's just hard to voice a character that just has nothing going on, no complexity or development

Yeah like no hatred to Stephanie whatsoever! I think she's a good actress AND a singer. And I'm sure she would've been a perfect fit for Vaggie if the character she was given had an actual arc to go through.

It seems more to me that she was barely given anything to work with due to Vaggie's role of just being Charlie's girlfriend and nothing more, so it is kind of hard to voice someone who only likes one person and hates everyone else around her.

And the contrast between her normal voice and her singing voice is such a fucking turn off...

Cause usually when you sing there's some semblance of your regular voice mixed in as well, like Charlie, Lucifer, Carmilla, and Alastor for example. But the problem with Vaggie's is that it sounds unnaturally high for how she talks in the show, which is kind of distracting in a way when this show is supposed to be a musical.

Alright fine I’ll do a full review on Hazbin

Okay I’m very bored so I’ll go in-depth on my thoughts on Hazbin.

The voice acting

The voice acting is mostly trash.

Erika Henningsen as Charlie was fine. Not great, but certainly not as terrible as the others.

Stephanie Beatriz as Vaggie was pretty bad. Her delivery sounds like she was trying to make herself sound as deep as possible and it didn’t work.

Blake Roman as Angel Dust was fucking horrendous, although it does improve as the series goes on. His acting was like Dan Castellaneta did in Aladdin 2. He sounded like he was trying to do an interpretation of Michael Kovach and it doesn’t work. Likewise, Dan was doing an interpretation of Robin Williams, but he still very clearly is not Robin Williams. Blake’s voice acting for the egg guys was fine though.

Alex Brightman as Sir Pentious was honestly fine. I think it’s mostly just Alex being an obscenely good voice actor, because I didn’t realized he voiced Pentious until I looked up the cast while writing this post. Alex’s voice for Adam was also really good. He sounded very distinct from both Fizzarolli and Beetlejuice, despite clearly being voiced all by Alex. Pretty good.

Keith David as Husk was okay. He’s certainly on par with the pilot VA.

Joel Perez as Valentino sucked. He sounds like a completely different person every time he speaks.

Christian Borle as Vox was actually pretty good. I like it.

Lilli Cooper as Velvette was horrendously bad. British people don’t sound like that. I’d know. If you can find me a single goddamn person on this island who regularly speaks like Velvette, I will give you nothing because that person does not exist.

Everyone else wasn’t notable enough to get their own review.

The music

The music was okay. Most of the songs sounded fine. The lyrics mostly sucked, but the songs themselves sounded okay.

The characters

The writing

the writing sucked. a lot of the jokes just had swearing or sex as the punchline and it was bad and also not good. i’ve gotten tired while writing this so bye

No one cares but I'll share my thoughts on English VS French Hazbin Hotel because I can:

Charlie: I love them both but French Charlie takes the cake because it's also Elsa saying fuck and shit

Vaggie: French. Stephanie Beatriz is a fucking legend but idk why the artistic director wants Vaggie to be so unemotional when she speaks. French Vaggie has a bit more spunk.

Angel: English. Tbh the French VA is pretty close but Blake Roman is better at making a broken voice (the Valentino scene in ep 4 UHHDJDBJZVAJ)

Alastor: English. And it breaks my heart because I LOVE LOVE LOVE Maxime Hoareau. But he's way too young to voice Alastor and it's quite noticeable methinks.

(Speaking of Maxime he has a friend called Victor Niverd who is also a very good voice actor and he would have been perfect for Angel, no shade to Maëva I love you Mme. Brioche)

Husk: English no contest. It's Keith David. Like.

Niffty: Neutral. Both are extremely good and the French version is pretty close to the English version.

Adam: French because EMMANUEL FUCKING CURTIL (my man is Jim Carrey, Simba AND Kronk. King.)

Valentino: It's harrrddddd. English BUT in French he has the same voice as Pippin and it's fucking hilariousssss and makes me want to punch him morreeeeeeeee.

Vox: French. I love me a good deep voice. Arnaud Léonard has a very good deep voice. Hmmmmmmm.

Velvette: English. The French is also very close but lacks a little peps, let's say. Especially when singing :')

Sir Pentious: I love both but the English takes the cake for better "I wanna punch the crybaby in the face" vibes

Zestial: JAMES MONROE IGLEHART!!!!!!!!!

Carmilla: English, same as Velvette.

Egg Boiz: Neutral. Both versions are good.

Credit where it’s due, Keith David and Kimiko Glenn are pretty great, but I seriously doubt they’ll be able to carry Viv’s horrible writing.

Stephanie Beatriz as Vaggie is kinda weird? Beatriz’ voice is on the deeper side, and from what I remember of the pilot, Vaggie had a pretty standard sounding voice, so going from that to Rosa Diaz is gonna be pretty jarring not gonna lie.

But as expected, the main cast from the pilot all got fired in favor of on camera actors and broadway stars.

Also, gotta love how Viv had to get Alex Brightman propionate roles in the main show and spin off, while Jill Harris (The person who voiced the lead character in the pilot.) got fired alongside the rest of the original cast.

I want to make it clear that I’m not trying to “Cancel” any of these actors for working with Viv, as at the end of the day, work is work, and actors have little to no say on what the final product is gonna look or feel like.

It’s just really shitty how Viv fired the entire pilot cast because they were all friends with someone she hated.

One thing has been bothering me a lot in many Hazbin Hotel reviews/analysis I've been seeing: the idea that Vivziepop hired "celebrities" to voice the characters and that it somehow cheapens the end product. (I don't have enough information about what went down between her and the old VAs from the 2019 pilot, so I'll refrain from commenting on that.)

This is a musical animated series backed by A24. It would not feel out of place at all for Vivziepop to cast musical theater performers as the characters in her show, as so many animated series and movies have done since Menken and Ashman changed Disney's (and other animation studios') approach to storytelling in the 90's. None of the VAs attached to the Hazbin Hotel credits can be considered "celebrities" in the normal use of that word - that is: their voices are not immediately recognizeable by the public at large and their names alone are not able to sell the show. The only performer who Viviziepop hired that fits the bill would be Kesha in Helluva Boss, the independent animated series that is not attached to this Amazon/A24 project. I think the most recognizeable name in the main cast is either Stephanie Beatriz or Keith David - and most people will remember them as "that woman from Brooklyn Nine-Nine" or "Dr. Facilier's Voice Actor", not by their own media personas.

Besides, it feels a bit dismissive when people just say they're "celebrities" and not, you know, actors who are doing the jobs they've been hired for. Keith David himself, for example, is an accomplished veteran actor, singer AND voice actor for many beloved roles - and he STILL is not recognized enough for his incredible range.

I understand that many fans are very attached to the original VAs (and that's completely valid, they are incredibly talented as well), but it feels kind of ridiculous to say that Vivziepop made the "wrong" choice here by casting a different set of performers in these roles.

Also: "Vivziepop should have saved the money she used on the Broadway VAs and given it to the animators!" I want animators to be paid fair wages just as much as anyone else, but this is not how the budget distribution for these types of projects work. You do know this is not how it works, right? Right?

I was not expecting Vaggie to be the second voice in “Happy Day In Hell” (when it goes “those angel’s minds are hard to change” and “they’re bloodthirsty and deranged”. It just sounds so… off? Like when the song first released I thought that it was a random sinner singing that part. Am I the only one? I know Stephanie Beatriz can sing so idk why she sounds so off here.

Same. She sounds like she just woke up from surgery.

For anyone who passed on Encanto, this is how Stephanie Beatriz's singing voice normally sounds.

I know that after the premiere, a HUGE amount of things about the first three episodes were leaked, but I would prefer to talk about them after the official release of these episodes, so that no one has any complaints against me.

But I want to discuss the official video about Charlie and Vaggie. And I find it very funny that the relationship between Vaggie and Charlie is so devoid of romance that the viewer has to be told directly the true nature of their relationship. And I know that this moment has already been discussed by many, but I cannot pass by.

Why is it so much broken? Charlie and Vaggie's proportions are weird, they both have different outlines, Lucifer looks photoshopped. What especially bothers me is the shadow it casts on the table.

We also heard more lines from Charlie and Vaggie. Charlie sounds good, although her voice sounds a little more mature than in the pilot. But Vaggie...Is she supposed to sound so emotionless? Seriously, what's wrong with her voice acting? I've had a problem with this since "Happy day in Hell". Stephanie Beatriz is a good actress, but why is her performance as Vaggie so bad?

I was also confused by Charlie. Being more bossy is bad for her because she wants to be a good princess, but cursing fits perfectly with this image? A few posts ago I discussed the problem of swearing and in "Hazbin Hotel" this problem only became bigger. And this is starting to piss me off a little.

Blake Roman’s Angel Dust is going to take some getting used to for me – just because his version of Angel’s voice so much deeper – but ultimately I think it’s a good fit.

Kimiko Glenn is voicing Niffty. I think she’ll do a great job, but I also wanna point out that this casting choice may point towards Viv confirming Niffty’s ethnicity? Kimiko Glenn is half Japanese, and this is the second time Niffty has been voiced by someone with a connection to Japan. Her pilot VA, Michelle Marie speaks Japanese.
