A Memory of a Past Adulthood, or a Foreshadowing of a New One?

OH YES IT'S EGYPTOLOGY INFODUMP TIME

Khonsu had indeed more than one aspect (as most of the Egyptian gods after all) and the most common were this four:

Ḫnsw-pꜣ-ẖrd - Khonsu the Child Ḫnsw-pꜣ-jr-sḫr - Khonsu the Provider Ḫnsw-(heseb-ahau) - Khonsu the Decider of Lifespan Ḫnsw-m-Wꜣs.t-nfr-ḥtp - Khonsu in Thebes Neferhotep*

*I left Neferhotep untranslated because it's composed of the hieroglyphs for nft + ḥtp and they can mean different things depending of the context.

nfr can mean "good", "beautiful", "perfect", while ḥtp if it's a name it means "pity"/"mercy" or also "offer", "offering table", if it's a verb it can mean "satisfy", "being satisfied", "being contempt"

Most of my sources leave it like that (Neferhotep), some of them translate it as "the Merciful" (although it should've been more ḥtp yt in that case?), others "beautiful and contempt", others "parfait d'offrandes" (perfect of offer?) and others again "vollkommen Gnädige" (perfectly merciful?)

Every time Khonsu and his aspects comes up I think of the Bentresh Stela (the picture below is incomplete but you can easily google it)

It's a sandstone stela with hieroglyphic incisions telling the pseudo-epigraphical story of Bentresh, daughter of the king of Bakhtan and sister of Neferure who was married to Ramses II

At some point this girl fell ill and they couldn't find any cure for her, so the king of Bakhtan sent a messenger to the Pharaoh of Egypt asking for help.

Ramses called for all the learned men of the palace and a scribe to go there and figure out a way to heal the girl, but they came home reporting their failure because apparently there was a spirit possessing her causing her illness and the only way to cure her was through divine intervention.

"Alright then" probably said the Pharaoh, going to the temple of Khonsu in Thebes

So basically Khonsu Neferhotep stacked 4 layers of magical protection to Khonsu The Provider and sent him to heal the girl.

It's the only case I know where different aspects of a god exist at the same time and interact with each other

One thing I found funny about this story is that as soon as Khonsu The Provider arrived (through his statue carried from the temple) he casted a magical protection on the girl thus expelling the spirit from the body

And that spirit is super polite with him, greeting the god with a sign of peace and welcoming him to the city before deciding to get back to whatever place they came from.

So everyone rejoiced and started preparing celebrations, at some point Khonsu said to his prophet to tell the people to prepare an offering not only for him but for the spirit too

And as they made an offer for the spirit, the spirit went away in peace

But as the celebrations were over the king of Bakhtan refused to let the god go home and kept the statue and shrine in his kingdom for 3 years and 9 months.

Until one night he had a dream where a golden hawk flew away in the general direction of Egypt - so he figured it was time for Khonsu the Provider to go home.

So the god came back to his temple safe and sound and everyone was happy

The dub of this comic will be recorded at the end of the month because reasons ehehehe (it’s also the reason why I am speed running this chapter)

Another thing! About the head machines Reginald uses on the siblings.

I said this above, but in the Umbrella Academy Safe comic, Reginald uses some kind of head machine thing for Abhijat to travel to Afterspace, a region in outer space that Reginald discovered with Stela (the comics version of Abigail?).

[ID. Afterspace.

Dr. Zoo: “Marvelous, no?” Luther: “It’s incredible, Doctor Zoo— but could you explain what exactly this place is?”

Dr. Zoo: “What if I told you the universe was expanding while at the same time staying precisely the same size?” Luther: “The universe is… renewing itself?”

Dr. Zoo: “It is— but we don’t know why. Afterspace is the wild, newborn region of space— and it doesn’t adhere to some of the basic laws of science. In your father’s notes, he mentions it along with someone he cared about deeply, named Stela. Does that name ring a bell, my simian sleuth?”

END ID. ]

And where Luther and Diego arrive in Afterspace, they encounter a Merge Sweep.

The Merge Sweep “joins [their] bodies seeking some psychological connective tissue—! [Their] forms and consciousness— become one— the sweep continues your merge until it finds the thing within you that unites you— emotionally— to each other”.

I’ve also seen theories around that the machines on Allison’s, Diego’s, and now Luther’s and Viktor’s (the four who were present whether at the scene or not at the Jennifer Incident) head and delves into their emotional moments or traumatic memories, which tracks here! Maybe this is also how we’ll see the original Jennifer Incident?

I feel this is more head canon than speculations but! Tying some thoughts and speculations about the umbrella academy comics. Though I don’t know if this will have any bearings on the netflix series since they’re so different from each other. Still, spoilers about the comics, the Safe issue, and a bit of the s4 teasers & trailers ahead!

So basically, in the Safe comics, Reginald knew of an ending to “all life as we know it.” He knows this because of something called a Trace, which he used to peek into a region of outer space and that “allows us to have a glimpse into our future, and to look at the very end of our existence.”

The end of all life as we know it.” END ID.] I think that object, the Trace, are the purple symbols here and contained in the capsule.

(Does this Trace have a connection to the sigil Reginald was using to reset the universe?) (I don’t have a Netflix account rn lol so have this)

[ID. A sigil. Its defining feature are the 7 rectangles with shapes within them all connected to a straight horizontal line, either on the line themself or connected by two lines. END ID.]

Reginald has Abhijat, his right hand man, use some kind of machinery that sends Abhijat’s mind to a certain region of space. (The machinery used was also similar to the machines Reginald hooked some of the siblings to in the trailer! Well, not that similar, but there’s a lever and the head machine thing. You can see a lever in the first pic next to Reginald)

And the reason why he sends Abhijat to this region of space is to observe these interesting fellas!

[ID. Abhijat in space observes as a number of large octopus-like creatures emerge from a tear. END ID.]

I’m going to call them space-octopus. Even though it looks like there’s multiple space-octopuses, Reginald just calls them singular it. Are they all part of the same being?

One appeared earlier when Luther, Diego, and Dr. Zoo (a friend of Reginald) explore Hotel Oblivion. In the comics, the Hotel Oblivion was actually the place where Reginald sent all the supervillains the Umbrella Academy defeated (provided with Self-improvement Rehabiliation booklets). It was a supervillain prison! It’s also located on another planet/dimension.

The space-octopus causes visions to Abhijat, and also to Luther when he encounters it. With Luther’s visions, it wasn’t so clear to me what exactly was going on, but Abhijat’s visions were shattered into his younger and more recent memories. So maybe what Luther was seeing were his own memories? But if they were Luther’s memories, what’s with the bacteria(?) panel? A memory of a lab study from his time on the moon? Or maybe they are a collective of Luther’s, Diego’s, and Dr. Zoo’s memories?

Dr. Zoo says that the Hotel was a trap for the space-octopus with the bait being the supervillain prisoners.

[ID. Two comic panels showing Dr. Zoo explaining, “The hotel is not a prison— it’s an Abraxan— a cosmic trap! And the bait is gone.” Luther asks, “A trap for what?” Dr. Zoo points to where the creature disappeared and says, “Whatever all that was— all of this is connected somehow.” END ID. ]

It does seem to look into the hotel, like it was checking if any supervillains were left. Then it went down to the trio, tap Luther on the forehead, screech, and return back to its sky tear.

[ID. The flaming eyeball of the octopus-like creature goes through the sky, stops next to the Hotel Oblivion, and then turns to face Luther. END ID.]

But why would it be attracted to the bait- the prisoners? What about Luther, Diego, and Dr. Zoo— what makes them different from the prisoners? And when it tapped Luther, was it also seeing his visions with him? Maybe that’s why it ran off, it saw his memories, and now knowing how exactly Luther got from Earth to Afterspace, is heading in Earth’s directions? And how did Reginald know about this, how to trap the space-octopus?

Does it have any connections with Ben? No clue! It seems that way, after Luther and co encountered the space-octopus, Ben visits Klaus and tells him “It’s coming. You better be ready” (if ‘it’ was referring to the space-octopus, and how else could he have known it was coming if they weren’t connected?).

[ID. In the comics, Ben appears to Klaus and tells him: “It’s coming. You better be ready.” END ID.]

And it certainly does seem to want to come over their reality. Though there was that space-squid from Rigel X-9 in the first page of the comics, so there might just be space cephalopods living out there in the tua verse.

But if in the series Ben is the cause of one apocalypse, then yeah maybe this is it. He inadvertently releases the Horrors or they come over to Earth and it causes the “end of all life as we know it.” But we’ll find out next month!
