Ok, I need to get this off my chest because it's a double standard in terms of character analysis that has been bugging me.
The general zeitgeist in the Naruto fandom (afaik) is:
Obito was a misunderstood and wounded tragic figure who caused mass destruction out of understandable trauma
Hiruzen was a despicable neglectful ruler who let Konoha's orphans fend for themselves and ordered the gratuitous slaughter of a whole clan
One caused the definitive death of hundreds of thousands of people in the search of an ideal
The other caused an unspecified but lesser amount of deaths in hope of a greater good
Both are definitely questionable.
Hiruzen is a former teen soldier burnt out by war, which made him weak-willed and unwilling to take moral stances out of fear of the risks incurred. His compromising lead to Hyuga Hizashi's sacrifice, and there were probably better ways of dealing with the coup the Uchiha were planning than killing them all (but make no mistake there definitely was a coup, the Uchiha massacre wasn't undertaken for the lolz). He's also left Danzo and Orochimaru running around doing their nonsense, which, really my dude? Really? Come on.
So yeah, not your garden variety nice old grandpa after all.
For his part, Obito was a child in great pain groomed by a completely unhinged demigod of a man into an adult of great resentment. Between the Kyubi attack, the Uchiha massacre, the Akatsuki's actions and the Ninja War, he caused numerous deaths and destruction. And I mean numerous. The death toll of the shinobi war is something I really don't see discussed enough, which is probably why it gets so easily swept aside in the face of his own personal tragedy.
And it baffles me, the hostility with which people will talk about Hiruzen in their very serious metas and his place in the Uchiha massacre like it's some form of hate-prompted slaughter he orchestrated and not a (bloody and questionable) reaction to an opposing political force trying to take over Konoha. While comparatively being so apologetic of Obito's actions who very much participated to that same massacre.
It's a strange thing, to criticize the shinobi system and yet refuse to acknowledge that this very system has a hold on everyone, not just singled out faves.
I don't particularly like Hiruzen. As a fanfic writer, he has his place and uses to me because of his own ties to the characters I'm interested in writing about. But he's not likeable to me.
I don't really like Obito either, but I'll also admit part of that dislike would be more neutral if he wasn't key player in my most hated arc of Naruto, and if fandom was more normal about him, so that's on me.
I just think it's kind of a shame to make one character some sort of scapegoat, and another a tragic antihero failed by the system, and deny the connections between them all, and the fact they were all, ultimately, failed by that system. We lose nuance there, which is sad because nuance is where analysis flourishes.
(And also this is how you get people calling the Uchiha massacre a genocide and my dudes I am trying very hard not to fandom wank, but you guys are terrible for my blood pressure)

WRO Reeve + Heartbreak
One who wears the crown, bears the crown.
For @here-be-ninjas | From a discussion on this post.
So I've been sitting on this for a few days now in my drafts. I kept trying to type it up as a reply on that fic, but the fact is... I just have too many feels and it kept getting way too long and I didn't want to slam out like, three half-thought out things. So here, I've done my best to outline some things that are going on for WRO that break my heart.
I have no idea if this is what you were expecting or wanting, but this is what you're getting.
Also, please excuse the gratuitous use of gifs, but like, I'm just delighting in the fact that when I search "Reeve Tuesti" in the gifs thing, I GET SOMETHING OMG.
(That wasn't true pre-Remake really. But thankfully, people are slowly realizing he's super handsome. So it's a win for me!)
Time to put my metal on Whose blood to spill? I don't know whose side I'm on. Two armies are coming at me. Their flags and weapons look the same. One tells the truth; the other's lying. And they're both calling my name.
-- "How Villains Are Made," by Madalen Duke
Canon Explanation
So at the beginning of Final Fantasy VII, we have three massive disasters occur in Midgar, all over the course of three days: Reactor 1 is bombed, Reactor 5 is bombed, and Sector Seven is dropped. It is certainly canon that all of these events deeply affected Reeve emotionally (if you want to see a video comparing Reeve's reaction to the Plate Drop plan, you can see that here).
Now, I don't think it's fanon to extrapolate that at the end of FF7, Reeve has lost basically everything.
Canonically, he's had to deal with the following:
The loss of Reactor 1.
The loss of Reactor 5.
The dropping of Sector Seven.
Tseng is nearly killed (how close Reeve is to Tseng is up for debate).
Cait Sith the First dies (as a sub-note on this one, not only does Cait Sith die, but the very thing that he dies for, to prevent Sephiroth from getting the Black Materia? Is immediately voided because Cloud hands it over to Sephiroth).
Aerith dies (how close Reeve is to Aerith is also up for debate).
Diamond WEAPON attacks Midgar, which is, of course, full of innocent civilians.
Reeve is dragged away to be imprisoned during this attack because he refuses to go along with Scarlet and Heidegger.
At some point, Reeve is freed (although, that's not important enough apparently to get a mention in the OG) and he organizes the evacuation of Midgar, which has to be evacuated through, canonically, a single train line and a single highway that wrap around the central pillar.
He shuts down all of the reactors in Midgar. I'll have to see if I can find a canon source for when, exactly, this happens; it happens sometime between when he is freed and when Edge is started, and I think there's mention somewhere that it's before the Lifestream surge that stops Meteor. However, per On the Way to a Smile, Episode: Barret, all mako reactors across the entire world have been shut down as of "several months after [Meteorfall]."
A few days after this evacuation process is started, his mother is killed when the Lifestream surges up to stop Meteor.
If he'd had any hope whatsoever of salvaging Midgar, or returning people to the city after the Meteor crisis, that's shot down after the Lifestream surge. So now he has a city full of people who refused to leave prior to Meteorfall, another city (Kalm) full of people who did evacuate, and no power for any of them. Again, you can see On the Way to a Smile, Episode: Barret if you want a little peek as to what some of the pre-Mako tech looked like. Spoiler? It isn't pretty. I'm talking coal-powered trucks kind of not pretty. This is a world without gasoline as tech. Mako literally powers everything, and they're now rationing what was left in the reactors. With that in mind, it's really no wonder that the WRO is militaristic.
As someone who has worked at an electric company (I want to add "canonically," but I mean IRL. XD), let me tell you, people without power? They are panicky. But okay, that's not addressed canonically, so let's disregard that side note.
Instead, let's just focus on everything else.
He's lost literally everything that he has clearly dedicated himself to: Midgar, his parents, one of his robot cats, and his entire livelihood. And suddenly, he's the only one with anything even resembling the experience necessary to run the world. The last standing member of the Shinra Board, and effectively, he's taken Rufus' place as the de-facto world leader.
And all of this starts on 12/9/07 and ends "the last third" of 01/08, according to the Crisis Core Ultimania Timeline.
So... all of that. In six-ish weeks.
And this is true before we even touch on the expanded canon and my headcanons regarding Reeve Tuesti.
You reach the battle lines Racing inside your mind A question for all time, is it you? So gravity defy And storm the darkest night Is it you? Is it you who will save us?

Expanded Canon and Headcanon Time!
Expanded Canon: The Inspire Thing
So. Cait Sith. Beloved fuzzy son.
First, let's look at Reeve's profile from the 10th Anniversary Ultimania:
The head of the Urban Development Department. Involved in the construction of Midgar from the very beginning, he watches over the town’s development like that of a child. By utilizing his special ability, “Inspire”, he is able to cause inorganic things to emit life; his “child”, the “cat”-shaped robot, Cait Sith can be controlled from a great distance. After Meteorfall, he became the director of the World Regenesis Organization (WRO), which is devoted to the purpose of restoring life to the planet.
So this is interesting for a lot of reasons, but there's two very important things that this profile does for us:
One, it clearly states that Reeve has been "involved in the construction of Midgar from the very beginning," and he "watches over the town's development like that of a child." So... That's a great character note and a problem, but let's put a pin in that and we'll discuss the problem part of that in the next section. So the thing you need to actually note there is that Reeve loves Midgar. Like a child.
And two, it defines Reeve's surprisingly controversial "Inspire" ability. I say surprisingly because here's the general breakdown. Reeve has literally always had this ability, but people will sometimes discount it because it's not "mentioned" in any of the games. And that isn't... wrong, exactly. Reeve is never, at any point in any of the games, 'outed' as an Inspire. However, let's look at the Ultimanias over the years:
Now, I wish I had links to all of these pages for you, but the simple fact is, I don't. I could probably get links to all of them, given enough time, but I'm still rebuilding my compiled FF7 References Google Drive folder. When I get everything in there, I'll post a link.
The point I want to make with this is that it isn't something new. This is not some detail they retconned in to make things work. They've literally always implied it in game. There's a few metas floating around periodically that talk about Reeve and Cait Sith, and maybe one day I'll sit down and write up my own, but I want to be able to link to certain things like the Before Crisis scripts and such, because there's evidence in there to prove that Cait Sith is not just a 'robot'. He's a plush cat, yes. He's an animatronic, yes. But he's also an individual.
Canonically, in the original game, he feels pain when he trips and falls in the Temple of the Ancients on his way to die. He begs Cloud and AVALANCHE not to forget him, even if another Cait Sith shows up. He reminds them all that there's only one him. (And then of course, they promptly forget him. T_T)
In Before Crisis, Reeve gives the player Turk a controller to use with Cait Sith, but Cait Sith has 'thought' dialogue in the game that cannot be attributed to Reeve.
In Dirge, you see Cait Sith and Reeve together at several points, and they always move fairly in sync, but there's no indication of a controller in Reeve's hand at any point. And okay, that could be because Dirge was really bad about character models. We never did, after all, get a pregnant Lucrecia model in that game. ... Or in any other game, for that matter. But that's a different problem.
The fact is, at no point is Reeve ever shown using a controller. How he controls Cait Sith is subtle enough that he can control Cait Sith actively during a board meeting that he lets AVALANCHE listen in on during the original game. That's the board meeting where Scarlet and Heidegger propose loading up the failed rocket in Rocket Town with materia and launching it into Meteor in an attempt to stop it. And none of the other directors (or Rufus, who is canonically aware of Cait Sith and Reeve's control of him) notice. So I don't think it's actually a stretch of canon to assume that Reeve doesn't have a visible means of controlling Cait Sith.
Which means... yes. It's magic. Some kind of mental connection to Cait Sith. And let's just... digest that for a second.
Imagine a mental connection to something you love like a child.
And you send it to be crushed to death in an attempt to stop Sephiroth from obtaining a materia that he will use to destroy the world.
And immediately after you've done this, you have to get the next version of that child to the same place, to the same group of people, who have already lost the materia you entrusted them with.
(And, as an aside, you were just using this second version of that child to rescue a dying coworker that, your own personal closeness aside, your good friend is very close to. Because Before Crisis makes it very clear that Reeve and Veld are close in some fashion. It's a little ambiguous about their exact relationship, but they're close enough that Reeve risks everything to help the Turks because he's sure they're helping Veld who is on the run from Shinra at that point.)
Now, all of this to say... Why am I rambling about Reeve's Inspire ability and Cait Sith? Well...
Headcanon: The Inspire Thing
My personal headcanon is that Reeve, with long enough exposure to anything inorganic (i.e., his car or reactors) can inadvertently form a bond with it. Even grant it a sort of ... half-life. Now, admittedly, this is entirely fanon. I make no arguments that there is any sort of canonical support for the Inspire abilities working with this way.
But the fact is... it's odd, isn't it, that the reactors are under Urban Development? Why aren't they under Science?
(And yes, that is canon. It's in the original game that reactor control is under Urban Dev-- Reeve Tuesti-- not Science.)
So this is something I play with, that Reeve is some kind of brilliant engineer, constantly tweaking the reactors, adjusting them to maximize every drop of mako energy as efficiently as possible. And in my headcanon, he manages that in part by directly interfacing with the reactors.
Which uh... makes blowing them up emotionally problematic for him. How emotionally problematic? Well, @ladykf-writes wrote me some amazing ficlets that feature my headcanons about this after much rambling with her about them. So I highly recommend checking those out if you're interested in this idea.
So, basically, in addition to the list up there? You could add that my particular Reeve is also suffering from some serious emotional turmoil regarding the "deaths" of Reactors 1 and 5 as well as Cait Sith the First. Those aren't just moments of, "oh it's tragic these people died," or "oh shoot, I lost one of my robots," for him.
He literally lived through their deaths.
Now. Let's move on from my headcanons regarding this ability and let's talk about Reeve's problem.
Broken pieces of a barely breathing story Where there once was love Now there's only me and the lonely Dancing slowly in an empty room Can the lonely take the place of you? I sing myself a quiet lullaby Let you go and let the lonely in To take my heart again
-- "The Lonely," by Christina Perri. In particular with this song, the "you" that I imagine it being focused on is Midgar, not a person.
Reeve's Timeline Shenanigans
All right, back to Reeve's profile from the 10th Anniversary Ultimania:
Involved in the construction of Midgar from the very beginning, he watches over the town’s development like that of a child.
And from the Final Fantasy VII Complete Dismantled True Story (which while "official" is not necessary "canon" per the development team):
A capable engineer closely involved in the design and construction of the two-tiered city of Midgar and its eight mako reactors.
Now, unfortunately, Reeve's profile doesn't often get translated in other ultimanias-- or at least, not in places I've been able to find-- so we're kind of stuck with just these two interpretations of this side of him. Still, it's pretty clear, right? He was involved in the construction of Midgar from the beginning. Even in the Dismantled True Story version, he's closely involved in the design and construction.
It also mentions that he's 35 (like Barret) in the original game. Since the game takes place in 0007, we can say pretty confidently that he was born in '72; same year as Barret, for those who don't trust my math.
Now, let's look at Midgar's timeline, shall we?
From the 10th Anniversary Timeline:
[ μ ] – εуλ 9/23/1959 (48 years before FFVII) · Shin-Ra Works (later the Shin-Ra Company) discovers mako energy [ μ ] – εуλ 1/9/1968 · Construction begins in Nibelheim on the first in a series of power generation facilities, “mako reactors” for the purpose of extracting mako. [ μ ] – εуλ 6/24/1976 · Construction of the mako city, Midgar, begins. The Shin-Ra company relocates its headquarters to Midgar.
... Interesting. Okay. What about other timelines? Well, let's look at the Crisis Core Ultimania's Timeline:
[ μ ] – εуλ 9/23/1959 · Shin-Ra Works (later the Shin-Ra Company) discovers mako energy. [ μ ] – εуλ 6/24/1976 · Construction of the mako city, Midgar, begins. The Shin-Ra company relocates its headquarters to Midgar.
Now, this does change a bit in the Remake Ultimania's Timeline, from what I understand. They push Midgar's construction date back to 1969, per the FFVII Timeline, which for the record I like because they source all their dates wherever possible. However, I haven't really dug into the Remake stuff yet because it's my understanding that the Remake is the Compilation in a blender, so just because something is true in the Remake doesn't make it true in other aspects of canon (for example, they adjusted the ages of Rufus and the Turks, to make Rufus clearly older/same age as them, whereas he was always younger in the original canon).
Anyway, the issue with this timeline is this: Reeve's four when they start building Midgar. How involved is he in this construction project?
Now, over the years, I've seen a few interesting takes on how to handle this.
One, people just completely disregard it. Which, fair. It's an ultimania canon note, not something from in-game, but I always find it interesting when people say, disregard these dates but are happy to accept say, dates regarding the Nibelheim project as gospel from the same sources. But hey, I cherry pick canon too, so who am I to complain, right?
Two, people go with the architect of Midgar being another R. Tuesti (probably Reeve's father is the most common headcanon), and over the years, his work has been conflated with Reeve's own until people just forget that Reeve himself couldn't have been the one to do it.
Now, my personal headcanon-- which I am absolutely detailing because you asked me about why WRO Reeve breaks my heart, and I swear all of this is tied into that original question-- is that Reeve's father was the original engineer who developed the Nibelheim reactor. He was also slated to be the lead engineer on managing the complicated network of the eight (nine, technically, at least during construction, but who's counting?) reactors in Midgar. Except when Reeve was about five, he died in an accident. Probably in a reactor, let's be honest.
And when the Turks (and because it's my headcanon and I can, the Turks in question are Veld and Vincent) are sent to pick up Papa Tuesti's notes from his widow so that the other engineers can try to make sense of them, they discover that the five-year-old can decipher his father's unlabeled diagrams. So they take the boy with them to the Shinra Manor in Junon where the President pays to have him formally educated and put to work deciphering these diagrams and notes to ensure that the Midgar project goes as planned.
Of course, being brought up to be this engineer means that Reeve has access to basically the best level of education possible. So yes, he's deciphering his father's notes, but very quickly, he's improving them. And that, my friends, is why he ends up as Head of Urban Development. Because the simple fact is, he's been brought up for this, raised and trained to President Shinra's exact specifications of what he wants in a city.
Now, once again, all of that is just my personal headcanon, and I can't even cite some of my old sources because I just cannot find them anymore. So take this or leave it, it's where I sit on it.
That also means that he was brought up in the same house as (although almost certainly very separated from) Rufus. There's a ten year difference between them, of course, so it wasn't like they were close, but there's certainly room for some... understanding between them. If anyone understands how the President was (who canonically was extremely abusive towards Rufus per On the Way to a Smile: Case of Shinra).
Now, how does all of this tie into WRO Reeve breaking my heart?
Well, per my headcanon, Midgar is literally his life's work. It's his father's legacy and it is the city he has poured his entire life into, and it's gone. At the end of the original game, it's gone, and he has to look at her dead carcass on the horizon every time he is in Edge.
He was fashioned into the engineer who builds cities and lives and fantasies-- the floating city, remember?-- and he was desperately just trying to survive the President's reign of terror under the hope that Rufus would be better (I can't find a copy of the source quote in Before Crisis, but it's mentioned on his Ultimania profile). And suddenly...
It's all gone.
I am the son And the heir Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar I am the son and heir Of nothing in particular
-- "How Soon Is Now," by the Smiths, but the AG cover.
So. If you've made it through all of this, I just. I have a lot of feels about Reeve Tuesti in general, and in particular, in what state he's probably in after Meteorfall. I guess this is what happens when you've been writing him for 20-some-odd years. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The long and short of it is this: Reeve is an incredibly underrated character, and he's so often sadly overlooked by fandom, and he just... he's been through so much by the time he's head of the WRO. I can't help but think that he's got to be so worn down by it all. It's hard, saving the world, especially in a position like he's in.
He is, after all, the only man in the world who betrayed Shinra twice and lived.
But he's also the man who built the world's largest, most complicated city, and he's a man who has survived losing everything.
And what did he do the next morning?
He went to work.
You wanna take a drink of that promise land You gotta wipe the dirt off of your hands Careful son, you got dreamer's plans But it gets hard to stand Soldier keep on marchin' on Head down 'til the work is done Waiting on that morning sun Soldier keep on marchin' on

Sparkstember Day 30: Whatever
51 weeks ago I became a Sparks fan very literally overnight, and it has been the best-slash-worst exercise in grief.
This is difficult to write about without both trauma dumping and giving away too much IRL info and/or some autobiographical details; but I also wanted to put it here because I know there are other people who’ll read it and “get it” better than others.
(Felt emotional, might delete later.)
1. A friend of mine died about five years ago. Put simply, he was one of the best, kindest humans on the planet. He was the tireless champion of people and things he felt had gone unrecognized or underappreciated. And he was the kind of stalwart believer that would keep gently nudging you until you Got It. He was also an enormous Sparks fan, and had been since the 70s. He saw them play in rooms of 500 to theaters of 7000 and everything in between. He was there for every night of 21x21. When they were in town, he’d buy extra tickets for friends on the promise that they’d attend the show. More than just being stubborn, he had the patience of a ninja.
He died 12 days after I returned home to LA for good, while I was still readjusting to driving and air conditioning and Pacific Standard Time.
He was spared the horrors of the pandemic, and January 6th, and the three days of collective sphincter-clenching before Joe Biden was announced as the winner of the election. He never got to see The Sparks Brothers or Annette, or see his favorite band headline at the Hollywood Bowl- all after a comeback that even he couldn’t have anticipated.
2. I had resisted the charms of Sparks for a long time, in what I can only describe as an Austenesque series of missed steps and false starts. Being enticed by hearing Lil’ Beethoven over the speakers while working at Famous Arthouse Theater but being told I couldn’t borrow it and being given Balls to borrow instead (which probably set me back a decade). The fact that around 2004 the clearance bin at Amoeba was full of copies of both Plagarism and Gratuitous Sax… at between $1 and $5 apiece. The music industry environment that I “grew up in” leading me to mistake their thumbing their noses at genre for dilettantism. Their daunting discography. The fact that I could almost never take him up on one of those free tickets because I was working two jobs to stay afloat and couldn’t afford too many nights off.
Similarly, there was a lot about my grief that I couldn’t process. I had culture shock upon re-entry. Then there was the pandemic. There was processing my ADHD diagnosis at 38 and mourning all the potential lost in those unfocused years. There were family issues and found family struggles. Outlets of joy and creativity either being postponed or canceled altogether. All of it just sort of coalesced into a sort of flavorless blancmange of inertia and ennui.
I would think about him at certain times of the year and feel the most crushing sadness. Not only for his loss, but that of the community he’d built and welcomed so many into. One full of people as passionate and nerdy and pop-culturally omnivorous as he was.
In both cases, there was always something in the way.
3. It took over a decade of his friendship, a two and a half hour documentary that made me say “Huh, so Sparks aren’t just one slammin’ electropop album and then a bunch of new wave dork music?”, and a microdose of a mind-altering substance, but I finally got it. Overnight, even. One could argue it was the drugs, but those wore off a year ago and I still love this damn band. I love that they were able to give me the excitement of discovery again; of finding a new album or artist that wasn’t spat out by an algorithm but by certified word of mouth (even if it had to come via Edgar Wright). I thought I’d lost that somewhere around age 30.
Patient as stone, he’d managed to keep nudging me until I Got It from beyond the grave.
I can’t say how many times in this past year I’ve cried, or how often I wished I could call or email him after listening to an album. I don’t think I’ll ever know his favorite Sparks song. We’ll never get to argue about our top 5 albums and why we ranked them the way we did. (I think if he were still around he might even be able to convince me that Balls is Decent, Actually.)
I held onto that grief for so long without confronting it. And for better or worse, I’ve kinda been forced to. There’s never going to be anything Sparks for me without the echo of him around it. But little by little —album by album or even song by song— I’ve managed to process it. And if I’m lucky, I can transform it.
4. I joke that Sparks are my emotional support septuagenarian art-pop duo, and they are. They’re my bridge to the friend I never got to say Hello to before he was gone. But more than that, they’re also a bridge back to when I was 25 and downloading obscure 60s albums off of newsgroups because the bands were Sunset Strip scenesters. Of educating myself on film through Famous Arthouse and the video store next to it that gave our staff free rentals. Russell mentioning Sky Saxon and reminding me that I haven’t listened to The Seeds’ self-titled album in at least a decade; finding it on the external hard drive I’d downloaded it to and listening to it with new ears. Hearing Ron talk about film and remembering that, for as much Kurosawa as I’ve seen, I’ve never actually sat down to watch all three-plus hours of Seven Samurai. That I actually have a list of movies to see to that I’ve been neglecting for Who Knows How Long that I should probably get to crossing off. Reminding myself to take in more art and less content; consuming more slow media but not being a hifalutin jerk who can’t enjoy something silly or bingeable. Or, put simply: patience.
It is, perhaps, a little bit like joy.
Thanks fellas.

I'm currently watching the Fourze summer movie, and oh my god, do I already love it. I'm like 60% of the way through. But wtf was the budget because the fight scenes go crazy. Like just against the Zodiacs who show up in the first half to delay the KRC from getting aboard their ship, you have Gentaro using every single switch. He's using them in combo and even using them in tandem with his power-up forms. It like genuinely reminded me of how versatile Gentaro's fighting style and abilities are. The fighting choreography for this is insanely good. Like even the out of suit fights were clean. Ryusei was doing his thing, and it looked so cool. All and all I love this movie so far
You have Koichi Sakamoto to thank for the fight scenes. He was the main director for Fourze and its movies, and he was a former stuntman and fight choreographer/director. He's done work for all the Big 3 toku shows (Sentai, Rider and Ultraman) as well as for Power Rangers. So yeah, he knows his stuff. I like his action choreography a lot, even if he's a bit gratuitous with them sometimes.
I do think he's edged out by Kazuya Kamihoriuchi though, since imo he does action scenes and dramatic scenes equally well. He's done so much stuff I adore: the debut episodes for Kento/Espada, Ren/Kenzan, Reika/Sabela and Keiwa/Tycoon Ninja, Heisei Generations Final (arguably the best of the HeiGen trilogy), Be the One, Trio of Deep Sin (the best V Cinema in Reiwa so far), and the absolute gut punch that was episode 47 of Kamen Rider Build.

THE LAST RONIN - Written by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, and Tom Waltz, Illustrated by Kevin Eastman, Esau & Isaak Escorza, Ben Bishop, and Luis Antonio Delgado
Holy guacamole on French toast, Batman. This comic had me feeling so many things. All of those things resulted in tears. I was crying through most of this comic, and I'm crying now as I type this analysis. This will be more spoilery than others, only because I talk about the identity of the Last Ronin. The story doesn't hide this information for too long, but it's only fair to warn you.
This story begins following a no-longer-teenage, mutant ninja turtle in an attempt at revenge on the grandson of Oroku Saki. New York has been changed by the oppression of Oroku Hiroto, and this may be the old turle's last chance at revenge. He is followed by the voices of his brothers, offering advice and criticism, nothing unusual for their dynamic. The turtle failed his mission and, as a result, attempted seppuku. The reader learns the truth. Michelangelo has lost his brothers and father. He is saved by Casey Marie Jones and her mother, April O'Neil, who lost a father and a husband.
In the particular trope of the "post-apocalyptic future of a world full of characters we know and love," the tone is usually somber. This story could allow a writer to explore a character's darkest moments and who they are when there's no hope. Unfortunately, this trope is rarely used to its fullest potential. Instead, we get some grimdark tragedy intent on ruining childhoods through nostalgic manipulation. I feared this as I began reading this comic. As expected, I did have to experience these characters' deaths, but it wasn't gratuitous or needlessly dramatic. Each character death was meaningful and respectful. Better than that, none of their deaths were useless. They died in battle, defending each other and their convictions.
There is a future podcast episode exploring why April and Mikey were the survivors because it deserves more discussion. The most important takeaway for brevity is that they have the most hope and the least attachment to honor duty or vendetta. The voices that follow Mikey around are his guilt, personified as his brothers, who died failing to settle the score. And he lived.
If I were to offer any criticism, the relationship between Mikey and Casey Marie feels rushed. By the time Mikey goes after Hiroto on his own terms, we're meant to believe that the two have become close, and Mikey has become a father figure and Sensie for her. Either I missed it, or the comic is missing some information about the time spent together, so their closeness felt sudden. Casey Marie, as well as Oroku Hiroto, feel like weaker characters, but that can't be helped since many of the other characters are already well-known. This isn't their story anyway.
If we are to believe this is a definitive end to the turtle's story, then it's a grand ending. I won't spoil the climax or the denouement because both were too satisfying and vindicating to sum up so easily. It feels all the more meaningful that Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird had their hands on this project. The character designs were recognizable but unique, and every page was beautiful. What really made me giddyy was turning a page to see the style suddenly change into the original comic's art style when Mikey or April were talking about their past. It was thrilling to see that old style incorporated into this particular story in such a significant way.
TRIGGER WARNINGS (with potential spoilers) -
1) Blood and Violence - There is not over-the-top violence, but there is realistic blood and injury.
2) Death and Mourning - If it bears repeating, the reader is subjected to many familiar characters dying. Though the deaths aren't disgusting, they are well-depicted. It might be an emotional read for sensitive TMNT fans and people who don't handle death well.

Beyblade Trope Pantheon - Burst
This links back to the Metal Saga version I done. Coming up is a list of the people in the Beyblade Burst verse and which tropes they would represent. Also included are how the links to the unabridged version of the tropes are written, except without the links, and unless it is the generic link. I then decided to include my main OC in this, because that's basically what I do all the time in these kinds of posts. They're in the Surge section because that's when their most important section of time is.
Mild edit on Lui's part to make use of one of his nicknames, also done on the parts of Nika, Ryota, Free, Shasa, Honey, Tobisuke, Arthur, Gwyn & Bel. Does not include all of them. Divided by season introduced, in order from the first to the last.

ninja scroll (1993) is so funny cause it’s supposed to be this average-straight-man-ninja-fantasy with a lot of gratuitous sex and violence but at the same time it’s so gay like the evil demon ninjas are too busy killing each other because they all want to fuck their evil boss™️ (who is canonically bisexual!!!) and then the male protagonist is poisoned and can only be saved by having sex with the female protagonist but he refuses !!?? because he’s too busy obsessing over said bisexual evil demon ninja™️ you can’t make this up

Hey Ninja! Since you mentioned more Halloween in the tags 😏
Favorite spooky music?
Favorite spooky movies?
I remember you mentioned pumpkin cheesecake truffles, but what other pumpkin goodies do you enjoy/like to make?
Oh ho ho, yes! Thank you for asking! :D 1. Vitamin String Quarter has a cover album of the soundtrack to The Nightmare Before Christmas. It's amazing! I listen to it every year to get into the spooky season! Initially, I only knew about the This is Halloween track, and would listen to that on repeat, but then found out that the whole album is wonderful. 2. Coraline is a great one, highly recommended! I also love Crimson Peak (the aesthetic!!!), which is *not* a horror movie, but a Gothic Romance and a perfect example of that genre. And one that I rewatched last Halloween season after many many years is What Lies Beneath! A favorite spooky thriller for me since I first saw it at age 17. I have a very clear distinction in what kind of scary movies I enjoy, because gory horror is not for me - give me uneasiness and tension and the supernatural, not gratuitous bloody murder!
3. Pumpkin soup!!!! Specifically this recipe which Nintendo shared as the official version of Yeto's soup in Twilight Princess. It is soooo good! And do use goat cheese if you can - it's amazing! Now, for a few years I had a coworker who would give me a couple of pumpkins from her dad's garden every fall, and so I would have enough pumpkin to make quite a few things with. Pumpkin pie is always a favorite, especially since I found this insanely easy and delicious recipe. I would freeze and save some of my pumpkin purée for my holiday baking, not only making those pumpkin cheesecake truffles with it, but also pumpkin roll! Every year I make a pumpkin roll for Christmas, which is essentially just a pumpkin swiss roll cake with cream cheese frosting. And any leftover purée can easily be made into pumpkin pancakes ^_^ And as far as seasonal baked goods that I don't bake myself, I am of course a huge fan of Tim Hortons' pumpkin spice muffins - oh my god they are so good!

Why are the Onyx Kinsmen so weird. "Hello, yes, we're a clan of ninjas and our two favorite things are the Slime God who keeps the balance of nature in check through slimes and also a void genie whose hobbies are having teeth and using them gratuitously." I respect literally none of you people.

so i know i said i would never address the events surrounding [REDACTED] on this blog. and i still won't. i want to make something clear though, because of the chatter regarding villain muses.
team rocket, logistically speaking, probably had nothing to do with gold's death. i'll explain my reasoning under the cut.
imagine, if you will, that you are giovanni. while you once were the most powerful man in kanto, what with being the strongest gym leader AND the head honcho of team rocket, you have fallen from grace because your criminal dealings have come to light thanks to a smartass kid. you're a smart man, however. you lay low, leave the region for a while. even when your admins try to hold up a radio tower to call you back, you hang back - partially because you're ashamed of yourself, but also because they got THEIR asses beaten by a second smartass kid and frankly it's embarrassing it's happened twice.
now, suppose. you're licking your wounds in unova, having a drink at your favorite hole-in-the-wall. the news flickers on. a horrified reporter reads that the mutilated body of a young child has been found in the johto region.
they put up a picture of the boy. you recognize him. he's the one from the radio tower. the one who stopped your team's revival.
now. pay close attention because this part is crucial. who do you think they're going to start investigating first.
because that's not just a normal boy. that's the boy who beat red, the first smartass kid, on mount silver. the boy who earned sixteen badges and the respect of two pokémon leagues, which house in no particular order: a war veteran, two different ninjas, multiple strongmen, a powerful psychic, BLUE MOTHERFUCKING OAK, and two highly powerful dragon trainers from a long line of dragon trainers.
one of which who helped this boy strongarm his way into your base and is THE FORMER CHAMPION.
SERIOUSLY, YOU THINK THE INTERNATIONAL POLICE IS BAD? HAVE YOU SEEN LANCE AND HIS FIFTY MILLION DRAGONITE? THE MAN BLASTED A HOLE INTO YOUR BASE'S ENTRY, AND THAT'S JUST WHEN YOUR ORGANIZATION WAS ABUSING AND TRAFFICKING POKEMON. WHAT DO YOU THINK HE'S GONNA DO TO A GODDAMN CHILD MURDERER, HUH. SPOILER ALERT, IT WILL BE MUCH WORSE.
ahem.
you get what i'm saying though? ordering the violent murder of the kid who beat you the second time around in such a gratuitous manner is a bad move for the guy trying to stay away from the public spotlight, especially after his organization got exposed TWICE. and especially when nothing's been done to red. it's inconsistent, and i'm pretty sure gio HAS some kind of ethical code. even if it's a criminal one.
also gold was friends with his son so was he REALLY that bad a kid?
'but vetra, the executives-' up the shut. doggedly loyal to giovanni as they may be, they are not stupid. archer literally took the L with grace upon getting his butt whooped.
if it was a murder, team rocket would probably have a VESTED INTEREST in bringing said murderer to justice. granted, it's team rocket, so it's probably fucked up mob justice. but that's what happens when you encroach on their turf i guess.
#OUTSIDE THE TOWER.#SO YOU'VE RISEN UP TO GLORY. headcanons.#child murder tw#child death tw#animal abuse mention tw#animal trafficking mention tw#[[not to mention 'bwuh bwuh team rocket' is the most OBVIOUS answer and therefore the dumbest.]]#[[i did have to think about it for a bit. but i knew someone was gonna broach the idea sooner or later and i wanted to nip it in the bud]]

Giraffe's Eye View | Princess Mononoke (1997) REVIEW
Wondering why the sudden case of Deja Vu? It's because this was posted as one long review called 'BINGE WEEK', but I've decided to shorten it for the sake of your sanity and mine. If you're interested in my previous review, click here for my thoughts on Rankin and Bass's take on The Hobbit! For now though, onwards to a grand adventure!
Let it be known throughout the land that I am not a weeb. Yes folks, surprisingly there are people out there who's lives don't revolve around anime. Nothing against the artform as a whole, it's just never been my cup of jade tea. You'd think me being born in the 90s would mean I'm totally obsessed with the medium, considering all the shows that mate it Stateside. You'd also think Pokémon would've been taken off the air by now, yet here we are. That show never kept my interest despite Nintendo's marketing making it appear everywhere, DragonBall seemed far too gratuitous both in terms of its action and sex appeal, and Sailor Moon came out at a time when the difference between boys and girls were distinguished by toy commercials. Ninja Turtles and Spider-Man were for dudes, Barbie and Sailor Moon were for not. Obviously now I know that's a load of bull, especially given my love of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, but little Clark was a lot dumber back then. Still, even now I'm reluctant to try out any new animes, not that this stops my pals from trying. The recommendations they gave me were a mixed bag to say the least. Tokyo Godfathers was as beautiful as it was bittersweet, One Punch Man that used the tropes of three separate generes to its advantage, and Nagatoro was cute despite how awful its titular character could be at times. On the other hand the finale to Cowboy Bebop pissed me of and my first exposure to Cardcaptor Sakura was during the middle of its second season, my anger rising due to how confused I was. With all that said, my taste in anime outside of Avatar or RWBY has expanded, now including films produced by Studio Ghibli. Last year I watched Kiki's Delivery Service for the first time and thought it was pretty decent, so what did I end up thinking of Princess Mononoke (1977)?
For starters, I was wondering why it's called that when she's not actually the protagonist. Not to say she isn't a pivotable part of the plot, but most of our time is spent on Prince Ashitaka, voiced here by Billy Crudup. For anybody about to complain how I'm a filthy dub-lover, two things: 1) I am just learning how to speak Japanese and I am a painfully slow learner. 2) This is an animated movie, not a manga. If I wanted to read, I'll bust out one of the Komi books lining up my shelves. All I wanna do is watch the movie without having to pay attention to whatever it says on the bottom. Nothing against anybody who prefers the dub, this is just my preference. Besides, the American cast for most Ghibli films are incredible, this picture being no exception. We have Billy Bob Thorton from Bad Santa, John DiMaggio taking a break from trying to defeat Kim Possible, and Minnie freak'n Driver as Iron Town's leading lady Lady Eboshi. As someone who thinks Tarzan is one of Disney's best movies, it was a pleasure hearing Jane in this movie.
Wait, wasn't I talking about the plot? Like I was saying, Ashitaka is cursed by a demonic boar, said curse being a demonic manifestation of vengeance and hatred. Think if all the nastiness of Twitter became a collective of demon worms that oddly resembled Venom. It's a pretty fitting description too, considering the symbiote's whole ordeal is enhancing the darker side of ourselves. It's why I still like Spider-Man 3, the symbiote in that movie bringing out the worst of Peter Parker just as much as this demonic curse brings the worst out in everybody. Aunt May was right when she said revenge is like a poison, no better example of this being this picture.
The curse is slowly killing Ashitaka as he comes across two factions also consumed by these darker emotions. On one side is the aforementioned Iron Town, a civilization made of metal that sits on some of the remains of the forest. While the populous seems pleasant enough, Lady Eboshi is obsessed with expansion, making the very sound point that cities have to grow or folks will die. On the other hand we have those living in the forest, such as the apes, boars, wolves, and the titular princess San (Claire Danes), all of whom hate the humans for destroying their home. Basically this movie is the anime answer to The Lorax, a story I have always loved. Much like Dr. Seuss's tale of Truffula Trees, progress and environmentalism are never depicted as purely right or wrong. Both bring up good points while also showing the flaw of each position. Any story that depicts one side as purely in the right or wrong is pure garbage!
ESPECIALLY THAT ONE!
Unlike Illumination's idiotic butchering of a beloved classic, I always respect pro-nature stories that find this balance. After all, people gotta live somewhere and so do animals, right?
If the brilliant writing wasn't already a win, the movie has amazing animation, though really that's to be expecting from Studio Ghibli. Granted, they achieve this level of perfection from the director working his animators like dogs, but let's not open up that can of demonic worms. Regardless of how the sausage was made, it's so spam good sausage. Heck, this movie marked the first example of CGI being implemented into anime and you can hardly tell! If I had any complaints about this movie, it'd be the surprising amount of gore in this movie. Granted it never gets to RoboCop or Predator levels of exteme, but boy did I begin to question this film's PG-13 rating when Ashitaka managed to decapitate a person with an arrow! Green Arrow wishes he could be that lethal! Also, the fact that our two protagonists don't end up as a couple as the end was kinduv' a bummer to a hopeless romantic like that, but really that's small potatoes in the grand scheme of things. When all's said and done, one can easily see why this is considered one of Ghibli's finest features. Do yourself a favor and check this out if you haven't already, preferably before you're cursed by demons.
Then again, maybe what they needed was a goddess to banish all the demons. Oh! I can think of one...

lol pretending this doesn't happen to grown men actors too like henry cavill, ben affleck (who relapsed into alcoholism partially because of that), keanu reeves, jason momoa, jason statham, rain (for ninja assassin, particularly. his diet for that film was A CHICKEN BREAST AND AN APPLE WITH WATER. PER DAY.), christian bale, hugh jackman, chris evans, chris pratt or loads of other actors who get shamed for having "dad bods" or "letting themselves go"
or mocking, say, an 85 year old that is still independently walking that likely just woke up for looking like an old man who just woke up
yet with these people it's like a fuckin federal case when carrie fisher got asked to lose 15 pounds for the star wars sequel trilogy (and ignored that they asked mark hamill to do the same lol)
also when women complain about gratuitous sex scenes or like being treated like a peice of meat on set they're treated as brave heroes but when a male actor refuses sex scenes or complains about being treated like meat he's seen as either a prude, religious weirdo or an "incel"
chris hemsworth got mocked for saying he felt like he was being treated like a piece of meat on the taika watiti dogshit mcu thor films and henry cavill was called "weird" for.....being uncomfortable with what he felt was gratuitous sex and shirtless scenes. in THE WITCHER. and Geralt in the books and games ain't exactly virginal!
listen idk I’m thinking about how before new moon came out it was like….every single news story was debating on whether or not they should keep taylor lautner as Jacob, because he wasn’t buff enough, and the film studio and the general public essentially pressured him into doing insane diets and workout routines just so he can keep a role he already won, just because no one would even entertain the character looking slightly different than described, and it was treated as this great thing, like damn, he really pulled it off!!! he’s hot now!!! he can keep the part!!! and that’s just so fucked up like. he was fucking 15 years old??? they spray painted abs onto Robert Pattinson in the same film. Taylor Lautner was LITERALLY A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD and practically the entire world slammed him for not having an unreal body, and then once he obtained one grown ass women were drooling over him like a piece of meat for the rest of his teenage years. what the fuck.

Nanami: Who's is teaching your kids English?
Me: Well, HurricaneBlue... I picked me and Yakumo. Jiraiya and Kenji are similar and might teach them bad words first.
Jiraiya and Kenji: No, we won't!
Fuuka, Tsuruhime, and Nanami: *glares at the American Ninjas* Doubt it.
Takaharu and Nagi: Yeah. Those two Americans were never our first choice, anyway.
The Ninjas Reactions?
Honestly I think this is just a recipe for disaster 😂 Cue the gratuitous English lol
