you reblogged something about sending you threats so let me tell you what I had planned and ready a few years ago, when I was very low, after I'd just come out as a woman and lost my then girlfriend over it.
I live next to an abandoned house. That house has a basement with a lock on the door. It's dark, cold, wet, and amazingly, has one working power outlet.
I can find someone a few hours away, maybe you, and knock them out. It only really needs to be for a second, I have a lot of toys i can use to streamline things. In this situation, a leather blindfold, a ring gag, and a dildo down your throat would keep you nice and quiet, while rope is all i need to keep you immobile. I can truss you up and stuff you into a duffel bag, shoot you up with something fun to keep you wet and out of it, and enjoy my drive home. I can take you down to that basement where you'll find a very simple lamp and a dog cot, and I can get to work training up my new toy.
Every day, I'll bring you some rice, beans, and milk, mixed together in a dog bowl, just enough to keep you alive. You'll be blindfolded and still confused, so to get it through your stupid slut skull I'll just rape your throat the first few times to make it clear: cum in your mouth means you get to eat. Pretty soon, you'll be expected to do this yourself, but because I'm so gracious I'll help you for awhile.
Once you're fed, I'll play with my new toy. The blindfold and gag may as well be permanent, you're not getting those off for a good long while. I'll press you facedown, and take your ass first. If you didn't do a good enough job slobbering on my girlcock, it'll hurt, but that'll just teach you to do better next time. I'll pump your ass for hours, until you're gushing my cum, then ram it right back down your throat and let you clean me off.
Once I'm satisfied, I'll hit you with another drug cocktail, to keep you too horny and dazed to think about anything but my cock. Then, I'll tie a wand between your legs, right on your filthy little clit, and tell you that if you cum without permission I'll make you regret it. You might not hear it, it may not even make it through your haze, but I hold a high standard, and ignorance is no excuse. You'll spend the night writhing on the toy, cumming your worthless little slut brains out, while the camera I leave in your cell records the night.
The next morning I'll bring you breakfast again, but before you can eat you need to swallow my cum. I'll take a fistful of your hair and fuck your face, watching the tape and counting the orgasms. It'll probably be too many to even count. I'll finish with your face, and tell you how disappointed I am in my new toy. Your punishment for breaking the rules will be a brand on your left asscheek, red hot steel marking you as property.
Then, the facefucking, eating, getting ruined in every hole. spending every night in a drugged out, overstimulated haze. Any semblance of sanity you have will erode until you're just doing as you're told, desperate for any kind of positive interaction. Only then will you be praised, only then will I call you my good piece of meat, tell you how perfect you are when you break for me, and you'll love it. That's how I'd train up my new living toy.
omg this sound like the perfect life for a cute toy like me😍

Trillium Flowers at Jessup's Falls Conservation Area
On a visit to Jessup's Falls Conservation Area, back in May, I was captivated by the beauty of a vast expanse of Trillium flowers in full bloom. The vibrant greens and delicate white petals presented a serene and captivating landscape.
Using a wide-angle lens at 10mm allowed me to capture the expanse of the scene. Even with a low aperture of ƒ/3.5, the depth of field on this lens was enough to keep the subjects in focus. One of the challenges was dealing with the flat lighting under the forest canopy. However, this even lighting also provided an opportunity to capture the scene without harsh shadows, allowing the intricate details and colors to shine. To ensure a sharp and clear image despite the handheld shot, I opted for a fast shutter speed of 1/320s. This choice was crucial in preventing motion blur and maintaining the crisp details of the scene. I set the ISO to 400, balancing the need for sensitivity in the low-light conditions with the desire to minimize noise. Holding the camera steady for the handheld shot was another consideration, but the fast shutter speed and shake reduction effectively mitigated any potential blur.
I was particularly drawn to the repeating pattern of the Trillium flowers and their large number, which created a rhythmic and harmonious visual experience. In post-processing. I composed the image so that the moss-covered boulder was positioned according to the rule of thirds. It became a key element in the composition adding a point of interest. I dodged the boulder slightly to bring it out more, enhancing its prominence and ensuring it stood out amidst the sea of flowers.
Jessup’s Falls is a gateway to natural discovery, located on the South Nation River where Prescott-Russell Highway 17 crosses the river via a steel truss bridge in Plantagenet, Ontario. The conservation area spans 13 acres and offers a variety of activities including picnicking, geocaching, and dog walking. The park is a popular fishing paradise with rock outcroppings perfect for casting a line, and it also features a floating dock and boat launch for river enthusiasts. The scenic views of cottages, wildflowers, and mature white pine and oak trees add to the area's charm.
The land was originally owned by Lieutenant Edward Jessup, who was granted 2,000 acres along the South Nation River following his military service. In 1980, Jessup’s Falls Conservation Area, previously named South Nation Provincial Park, was deregulated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), and purchased by South Nation Conservation in 1986. Jessup’s Falls received its name from a set of rapids which existed prior to the construction of the Carillon Dam in 1963. The Carillon Dam on the Ottawa River created higher water levels upstream, thus eliminating the falls on the South Nation River. Over the years, the name Jessup’s Falls has had many variations, including “Jessop’s Falls”, “Les Chutes Jésuites”, and “Les Petites Chutes”.
The Conservation Area has been declared an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI), housing many species at risk. This recognition highlights the importance of preserving the natural and scientific value of the area, ensuring its protection for future generations.

Onwald mæg wel reccean se þe ægðer ge hiene habban con ge wiðwinnan.*
- Old English
He wields power well who can both hold and resist it.*
Penny Mordaunt, Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Privy Council, took on a leading role during the coronation service at Westminster Abbey of King Charles III. Many commentators agreed she stood out for doing such a sterling job in standing to attention and holding up a sword weighing around 3kg for a good part of the proceedings. She didn’t waver once.
It’s all the more surprising that the upward political trajectory of the MP from Plymouth had flatlined after she had a promising junior ministerial career before losing out twice in the Tory leadership elections to Liz Truss and later Rishi Sunak.
It was the ill-fated Truss in her brief stint as Prime Minister who had given the 50 year old Mordaunt the wooden spoon of political offices, Leader of the House of Commons, often seen as half-way house for a minister on his way down the greasy pole of ministerial politics. Sunak kept her in the same position after annoying Sunak loyalists for staying in the leadership race to the bitter end. In that position she has thrived somewhat for her debating skills and being good on her feet as well being loyal to the Prime Minister.
Little did anyone think - least of Mordaunt - that as Leader of the Commons she would also breathe life into the nondescript title of Lord President of the Privy Council. But in one of the more arcane details of that title is the right to hold the Sword of State in any royal coronation.
As Lord President of the Privy Council she was expected the wear the august robes of that office but chose instead for a more modest presentation of a blue dress with mute gold olive leaf trimmings. As Lord President of the Privy Council, Mordaunt exchanged the larger Sword of State, a steel blade with a silver-gilt hilt that symbolises royal authority, for the jewelled Sword of Offering, which the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby then placed in the King's right hand. Mordaunt later redeemed the sword by offering 100 newly minted 50 pence coins and carried the sword before the King for the rest of the service.
Symbolising the protection of good and the punishment of evil, the jewelled sword was used as a Sword of Offering at the coronation ceremony of George IV in 1821. It wouldn't appear again at a coronation ceremony until 1902 for Edward VII and it has been featured at all subsequent coronations since. The sword features partly blued and gilt steel decorated on both faces with national emblems, including roses, thistles and shamrocks, while the hilt and scabbard are decorated with numerous jewels such as diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds.
There is no question that Penny Mordaunt cemented herself in the public consciousness, with even Labour counterparts commenting that she looked 'damn fine' and 'stole the show'. Admiration for her sword-bearing skills at the coronation might just reignite her political fortunes especially if Sunak and his government are widely expected to lose the upcoming general election. She may be third time lucky at getting the chance to be the leader of the Tory party. In any case many would agree in watching her steadfast performance at the coronation, it really might be the case that the ‘Penny is mightier than the sword’.

Consider
(the 1950s) 1. Consider a train, passing fields and farms; silos, barns, Holsteins and lowing tractors, corduroyed farmers sweating in the bright day, dust rising from the earth like the ribbed drone of flies purling green in the primeval daylight. Consider the sonorous horn of this hematic streak weeping brightly as it speeds on, straight as the arrow in its headlong tumble, rumbling laughingly as it sifts the dappled greens and browns of that spare landscape, tempering the endless acreage provisioning the nation—that flat, felt land sprawling alike the singing coastal cities so relentless and intractable, curmudgeon- ly and close-fisted, devouring their children in the tens of thousands with the gawping mouths of their Mohammedan skyscrapers lowering and wind-blown, piercing and lighting up the vast electric night in ensemble. Consider this myria- pod existence of steel and ossified will thunder- ing by on two slate-silver ribbons running paral- lel for countless miles, lacing the vast Midwest, stitching up the endless column of ties and oc- casional grade crossings like hemp boot-laces, stringing the fields together with gravel and barbed wire, signage, burrs and tall grasses. Consider how this train plies its route with a hale abandon, calling its rhythmic lightning up from the earth, up from the rocks and the dirt and flocks of mourning doves calling out in the redbuds and maples toward the enormous light.
2. This train may crash. I tell it to you now: this vagrant smear of maroon and vital orange that rends the fields with searing, luminous fire as it hurtles incandescently over the grassy-knolled, grain-bleeding, cornrowed Shield toward its terminus in sprawling, smoking civilization— the Twin Cities, with their endless depots and boxcars and freight yards and shunters all toil- ing away from sunup till sundown; with their murky tenements and lucent towers, shopfronts and movie-houses, dances halls and all the rest— may meet its fragrant, instant destruction on a bad section of track or a turn rushed into, top- pling car by car: crashing, careening, jerking, jittering, jackknifing, compacting, and collapsing in on itself like an accordion in subsidence, steel walls crumpling and windows shattering, roofs peeling open like sardine tins, men and women in blue, brown, and grey suits thrown about like ragdolls in total confusion, landing broken and haphazard to be crushed by overturned settees, or ripped to shreds by the wheels and steel gird- ers, blood spilling out of mangled bodies to douse the sparking flames lapping greedily at their char- ring limbs, their faces frozen in silent cries of agony or mortal terror, their eyes blank and milk- white, rolled back into their fractured skulls, and the many passengers aboard, embarking at innumerable stations, may, unknowing, be spend- ing their final breaths in the upcoming moments.
3. Consider this slick culebra sidewinding its way across the vast Prairielands at the heart of this continent, this orange, black-backed serpent braiding its way through the empty Shieldland toward the far, Western mountain ranges so indomitable, snow-capped and sky-scraping, vertiginous holy schist and gneiss thrusting their gnarled rug-folds into the blue mountain air, hog- backed and glaciated with Methuselan water. Consider this train, a city on wheels: coaches and dome cars, taverns and diners, sleepers, the mo- bile post office. Consider the inside of the obser- vation car, strikingly modern and strewn with amenities: Plush reclining seats and couches, panoramic windows, lamps and indirect lighting. Softest touches. Crisp, clean lines throughout, wood veneer and polished metal. Stylish, canny understatement. And air-conditioned, the 20th Century's saving grace of all graces. Consider its construction, steel trusses and plate glass in a gyroscopic half-bullet-head, an arch geo- metric prism 27-faceted, surrounding idle men and women in pressed suits. A bird-cage of light enshrouding in an elongated glass dome, swimming in the rays of blue afternoon sun. How shall this fabricated luxury hold its own, if the onslaught of Nature should present itself?
4. Consider the Atom Bomb, which was dropped on Hiroshima by a bomber baptized after the pilot's mother; which killed over 60,000 people instantly, vaporizing them into atomic particles that stained the stone steps and roads of the city, and crafted a crater over two miles wide, destroying buildings with fanatical passion, pul- verizing stone, concrete, wood, and tile through heat and shockwave blast; which continued to kill Hiroshima's citizens by the thousands in the days and weeks that followed, through radiation sickness, burns, and malnutrition, bringing the total death toll to 146,000; which happened also in Nagasaki three days later with a death toll of 80,000 souls, a lesser number due to the moun- tainous terrain of the locale redirecting the blast- waves of the second Bomb; and some top gener- als in the war who were against the use of these bombs, who preferred to continue using con- ventional incendiaries to carpet-bomb as they had above Tokyo, and President Truman who ordered they be used; and the young pilots who likewise were uncertain of their duty's moral standing in dropping bombs of such unbridled brutality on innocent civilians who had little to do with Imperial Nippon's military machine beyond those conscripted laborers in factories; and the new world also which spawned on that day, August 6, 1945, a world of great and terrible machines which the World's Powers hurried to stockpile in an ever-escalating arms race which we now find ourselves confronting; which hangs over our heads a wanton sword that casts our faces in sickly pall with cadaverous refracted sun- light, our eyes sunken, our hands bony and grasp- ing at shreds of blind hope in this uncertain Age—
5. Consider the engineer and the conductor in the cab of the locomotive, as it streaks across vast, thicketed Montana, en route from Chicago—with its dockyards and freighters and ore-loaders all toiling and laboring dustily away, with its spider- web of train stations and rail lines connecting our nation's farthest points together, a vast and ever-complicating machine—toward Spokane and Seattle on the Pacific coast, hauling its frail cargo of ordinary human lives in sveltest finery, its interior stylings the crème of our postwar modernité. It is their job to make sure that their train leaves safely and arrives safely, never encountering a disruption or delay. What if, through negligence or illness, they might fail in their duty, and thus through their onus their train come to grief? If so, the men and women aboard this lightning flyer, in their elegant trav- eling clothes, mothers watching over sons and daughters, fathers reading the daily paper or talking politics with their fellow men, economy passengers in their reclining chairs, spendthrifts in their private rooms, honeymooners in the Super Dome taking photos of the passing land- scapes, all of their lives would be forfeit! 150 souls injured or extinguished in a burning wreck of twisted metal cockle-shells piled ignominious on some Alpine rail line, blocking traffic in and out of the pass where they met their end. What, if such a fate befall these innocent travelers!
6. Consider this wry, fitful, intransigent world in which we find ourselves now inhabiting, which demands our servitude and utmost compliance in the new ways of living running rampant, pug- nacious, impersonal and impervious to all as- sault now, restructuring our lives into modes cold and strange, where at this very moment Hollywood is making blockbusters in sunny Italy borne on the backs of her poor Southern farm- ers, and Hollywood is flying her stars into Rome to appear in these Spaghetti-films and crass tab- loid papers cropping up, staffed by ungovern- able photographers and reporters, and Elvis is gyrating his hips to the youth-shod trill of a million prepubescent girls, and Rome's beauti- ful liners are sinking in Nantucket's waters, and the Iron Curtain has come down with a bang, and airplanes are the finest new way to travel, no longer the means of California's elite, and what's a few crashes to douse public opinion? The new Comet's flaws are merely contrition. America is searching within the atom for Peace, and seeking to emphasize her right to the sky, stockpiling her nuclear marvels, singing her war-cry, hawking her blue jeans for the whole world to buy, and cities are putting fluoride in their water supply, town taps burnishing teeth pearly-white, and Senator McCarthy has the whole of the nation seeing Reds in their stock- ings, and Allen Ginsberg is hawking his scurri- lous poetry, and supermarkets are proliferating, supplanting the grocers, and America will admit to no wrongdoing in dropping the Bomb, and the Marshall Plan is siring economic Miracles, and everyone wants their plastic flamingoes, as America and Russia wage proxy wars across Eurasia, bombarding their vassals, and merry the Devil who tends the flame-flowers of evil, and Kaliningrad is in ruins, and so too is Poland, and Russia has outlawed jazz yet again, and every man fancies himself a poet, and the whole world is sliding into intractable panic, children huddling under desks and fearing the sirens an- nouncing the imminent bombs overhead spiral- ing, alike a clumsy old albatross careening onto the deck of a sultry destroyer hove to and bran- dished in territorial disputes—How does one keep hope in this godless new age? How can't one madden at the news overflowing in these rank, algal days from our many newspapers? And what can be done if one drops the bomb on the heads of those riding this automaton stri- ation, as it cascades volubly over her tempered steel ribbons? What if this this train should yet wreck? What then? Who shall mourn these inno- cents caught in the crosshairs of Fate's ready rifle- men aiming so deadly at the forefront of history?
Coda. The train does not crash. The engineer and con- ductors attend to their duties, and no harm bursts in the air above. All is well on this autumn day.

Extracts from Alan Weisman, The World Without Us, 2007. The book considers the material aspects of human civilization and how long they would last, unattended. If humans were to vanish from Earth, if all maintainance and repairing work ceased, what would happen to what we leave behind?
(The book went on to inspire two speculative documentaries, Life After People by History Channel and Aftermath: Population Zero by National Geographic, emphasizing different aspects of it. They were neat.)
Chapter 2: Unbuilding Our Home
No matter how hermetically you’ve sealed your temperature-tuned interior from the weather, invisible spores penetrate anyway, exploding in sudden outbursts of mold—awful when you see it, worse when you don’t, because it’s hidden behind a painted wall, munching paper sandwiches of gypsum board, rotting studs and floor joists. Or you’ve been colonized by termites, carpenter ants, roaches, hornets, even small mammals.
Most of all, though, you are beset by what in other contexts is the veritable stuff of life: water... moisture enters around the nails. Soon they’re rusting, and their grip begins to loosen... As gravity increases tension on the trusses, the ¼-inch pins securing their now-rusting connector plates pull free from the wet wood, which now sports a fuzzy coating of greenish mold... When the heat went off, pipes burst if you lived where it freezes, and rain is blowing in where windows have cracked from bird collisions and the stress of sagging walls. Even where the glass is still intact, rain and snow mysteriously, inexorably work their way under sills. As the wood continues to rot, trusses start to collapse against each other. Eventually the walls lean to one side, and finally the roof falls in...
While all that disaster was unfolding, squirrels, raccoons, and lizards have been inside, chewing nest holes in the drywall, even as woodpeckers rammed their way through from the other direction... Fallen vinyl siding, whose color began to fade early, is now brittle and cracking as its plasticizers degenerate. The aluminum is in better shape, but salts in water pooling on its surface slowly eat little pits that leave a grainy white coating... Unprotected thin sheet steel disintegrates in a few years. Long before that, the water-soluble gypsum in the sheetrock has washed back into the earth. That leaves the chimney, where all the trouble began. After a century, it’s still standing, but its bricks have begun to drop and break as, little by little, its lime mortar, exposed to temperature swings, crumbles and powders.
If you owned a swimming pool, it’s now a planter box... If the house’s foundation involved a basement, it too is filling with soil and plant life. Brambles and wild grapevines are snaking around steel gas pipes, which will rust away before another century goes by. White plastic PVC plumbing has yellowed and thinned on the side exposed to the light, where its chloride is weathering to hydrochloric acid, dissolving itself and its polyvinyl partners. Only the bathroom tile, the chemical properties of its fired ceramic not unlike those of fossils, is relatively unchanged, although it now lies in a pile mixed with leaf litter.
After 500 years, what is left depends on where in the world you lived. If the climate was temperate, a forest stands in place of a suburb; minus a few hills, it’s begun to resemble what it was before developers, or the farmers they expropriated, first saw it. Amid the trees, half-concealed by a spreading understory, lie aluminum dishwasher parts and stainless steel cookware, their plastic handles splitting but still solid... The chromium alloys that give stainless steel its resilience... will probably continue to do so for millennia, especially if the pots, pans, and carbon-tempered cutlery are buried out of the reach of atmospheric oxygen. One hundred thousand years hence, the intellectual development of whatever creature digs them up might be kicked abruptly to a higher evolutionary plane by the discovery of ready-made tools...
If you were a desert dweller, the plastic components of modern life flake and peel away faster, as polymer chains crack under an ultraviolet barrage of daily sunshine. With less moisture, wood lasts longer there, though any metal in contact with salty desert soils will corrode more quickly. Still, from Roman ruins we can guess that thick cast iron will be around well into the future’s archaeological record, so the odd prospect of fire hydrants sprouting amidst cacti may someday be among the few clues that humanity was here...
In a warmer world... drier, hotter desert climates will be complemented by wetter, stormier mountain weather systems that will send floods roaring downstream, overwhelming dams, spreading over their former alluvial plains, and entombing whatever was built there in annual layers of silt. Within them, fire hydrants, truck tires, shattered plate glass, condominia, and office buildings may remain indefinitely, but as far from sight as the Carboniferous Formation once was.
No memorial will mark their burial, though the roots of cottonwoods, willows, and palms may occasionally make note of their presence. Only eons later, when old mountains have worn away and new ones risen, will young streams cutting fresh canyons through sediments reveal what once, briefly, went on here.

Chapter 3: The City Without Us
Under New York, groundwater is always rising… Whenever it rains hard, sewers clog with storm debris… With subway pumps stilled… water would start sluicing away soil under the pavement. Before long, streets start to crater. With no one unclogging sewers, some new watercourses form on the surface… Within 20 years, the water-soaked steel columns that support the street above the East Side’s 4, 5, and 6 trains corrode and buckle. As Lexington Avenue caves in, it becomes a river.
Whenever it is, the repeated freezing and thawing make asphalt and cement split. When snow thaws, water seeps into these fresh cracks. When it freezes, the water expands, and cracks widen… As pavement separates, weeds like mustard, shamrock, and goosegrass blow in from Central Park and work their way down the new cracks, which widen further… The weeds are followed by the city’s most prolific exotic species, the Chinese ailanthus tree… As soil long trapped beneath pavement gets exposed to sun and rain, other species jump in, and soon leaf litter adds to the rising piles of debris clogging the sewer grates.
The early pioneer plants won’t even have to wait for the pavement to fall apart. Starting from the mulch collecting in gutters, a layer of soil will start forming atop New York’s sterile hard shell, and seedlings will sprout…
In the first few years with no heat, pipes burst all over town, the freeze-thaw cycle moves indoors, and things start to seriously deteriorate. Buildings groan as their innards expand and contract; joints between walls and rooflines separate. Where they do, rain leaks in, bolts rust, and facing pops off, exposing insulation. If the city hasn’t burned yet, it will now… with no firemen to answer the call, a dry lightning strike that ignites a decade of dead branches and leaves piling up in Central Park will spread flames through the streets. Within two decades, lightning rods have begun to rust and snap, and roof fires leap among buildings, entering paneled offices filled with paper fuel. Gas lines ignite with a rush of flames that blows out windows. Rain and snow blow in, and soon even poured concrete floors are freezing, thawing, and starting to buckle. Burnt insulation and charred wood add nutrients to Manhattan’s growing soil cap. Native Virginia creeper and poison ivy claw at walls covered with lichens, which thrive in the absence of air pollution. Red-tailed hawks and peregrine falcons nest in increasingly skeletal high-rise structures.
Within two centuries… colonizing trees will have substantially replaced pioneer weeds. Gutters buried under tons of leaf litter provide new, fertile ground for native oaks and maples from city parks. Arriving black locust and autumn olive shrubs fix nitrogen, allowing sunflowers, bluestem, and white snakeroot to move in along with apple trees, their seeds expelled by proliferating birds… as buildings tumble and smash into each other, and lime from crushed concrete raises soil pH, inviting in trees, such as buckthorn and birch, that need less-acidic environments…
In a future that portends stronger and more-frequent hurricanes striking North America’s Atlantic coast, ferocious winds will pummel tall, unsteady structures. Some will topple, knocking down others. Like a gap in the forest when a giant tree falls, new growth will rush in. Gradually, the asphalt jungle will give way to a real one.

Chapter 7: What Falls Apart
(context: this chapter describes Varosha, a city in Cyprus evacuated in 1974 after the Turkish invasion, and left abandoned until 2019)
[Two years after abandonment] Asphalt and pavement had cracked… Australian wattles, a fast-growing acacia species used by hotels for landscaping, were popping out midstreet, some nearly three feet high. Creepers from ornamental succulents snaked out of hotel gardens, crossing roads and climbing tree trunks… Concussions from Turkish air force bombs, Cavinder saw, had exploded plate-glass store windows. Boutique mannequins were half-clothed, their imported fabrics flapping in tattered strips…
Pigeon droppings coated everything. Carob rats nested in hotel rooms, living off Yaffa oranges and lemons from former citrus groves… The bell towers of Greek churches were spattered with the blood and feces of hanging bats.
Sheets of sand blew across avenues and covered floors… Now, no bands, just the incessant kneading of the seathat no longer soothed. The wind sighing through open windows became a whine. The cooing of pigeons grew deafening.
Varosha, merely 60 miles from Syria and Lebanon, is too balmy for a freeze-thaw cycle, but its pavement was tossed asunder anyway. The wrecking crews weren’t just trees, Münir marveled, but also flowers. Tiny seeds of wild Cyprus cyclamen had wedged into cracks, germinated, and heaved aside entire slabs of cement…
Two more decades passed… Its encircling fence and barbed wire are now uniformly rusted, but there is nothing left to protect but ghosts. An occasional Coca Cola sign and broadsides posting nightclubs’ cover charges hang on doorways… Fallen limestone facing lies in pieces. Hunks of wall have dropped from buildings to reveal empty rooms… brick-shaped gaps show where mortar has already dissolved. Other than the back-and-forth of pigeons, all that moves is the creaky rotor of one last functioning windmill.
In the meantime, nature continues its reclamation project. Feral geraniums and philodendrons emerge from missing roofs and pour down exterior walls. Flame trees, chinaberries, and thickets of hibiscus, oleander, and passion lilac sprout from nooks where indoors and outdoors now blend. Houses disappear under magenta mounds of bougainvillaea. Lizards and whip snakes skitter through stands of wild asparagus, prickly pear, and six-foot grasses. A spreading ground cover of lemon grass sweetens the air. At night, the darkened beachfront, free of moonlight bathers, crawls with nesting loggerhead and green sea turtles.

Chapter 10: The Petro Patch
If, in the immediate aftermath of Homo sapiens petrolerus, the tanks and towers of the Texas petrochemical patch all detonated together in one spectacular roar, after the oily smoke cleared, there would remain melted roads, twisted pipe, crumpled sheathing, and crumbled concrete. White-hot incandescence would have jump-started the corrosion of scrap metals in the salt air, and the polymer chains in hydrocarbon residues would likewise have cracked into smaller, more digestible lengths, hastening biodegradation. Despite the expelled toxins, the soils would also be enriched with burnt carbon, and after a year of rains switchgrass would be growing. A few hardy wildflowers would appear. Gradually, life would resume.
Or, if the faith of Valero Energy’s Fred Newhouse in system safeguards proves warranted—or if the departing oilmen’s last loyal act is to depressurize towers and bank the fires—the disappearance of Texas’s world champion petroleum infrastructure will proceed more slowly. During the first few years, the paint that slows corrosion will go. Over the next two decades, all the storage tanks will exceed their life spans. Soil moisture, rain, salt, and Texas wind will loosen their grip until they leak. Any heavy crude will have hardened by then; weather will crack it, and bugs will eventually eat it.
What liquid fuels that haven’t already evaporated will soak into the ground. When they hit the water table, they’ll float on top because oil is lighter than water. Microbes will find them, realize that they were once only plant life, too, and gradually adapt to eat them. Armadillos will return to burrow in the cleansed soil, among the rotting remains of buried pipe.
Unattended oil drums, pumps, pipes, towers, valves, and bolts will deteriorate at the weakest points, their joints… Until they go, collapsing the metal walls, pigeons that already love to nest atop refinery towers will speed the corruption of carbon steel with their guano, and rattlesnakes will nest in the vacant structures below. As beavers dam the streams that trickle into Galveston Bay, some areas will flood. Houston is generally too warm for a freeze-thaw cycle, but its deltaic clay soils undergo formidable swell-shrink bouts as rains come and go. With no more foundation repairmen to shore up the cracks, in less than a century downtown buildings will start leaning.
… When oil, gas, or groundwater is pumped from beneath the surface, land settles into the space it occupied… Lower the land, raise the seas, add hurricanes far stronger than midsize, Category 3 Alicia, and even before its dams go, the Brazos gets to do again what it did for 80,000 years: like its sister to the east, the Mississippi, it will flood its entire delta… flare towers, catalytic crackers, and fractionating columns, like downtown Houston buildings, will poke out of brackish floodwaters, their foundations rotting while they wait for the waters to recede.
… Below the surface, the oxidizing metal parts of chemical alley will provide a place for Galveston oysters to attach. Silt and oyster shells will slowly bury them, and will then be buried themselves. Within a few million years, enough layers will amass to compress shells into limestone, which will bear an odd, intermittent rusty streak flecked with sparkling traces of nickel, molybdenum, niobium, and chromium. Millions of years after that, someone or something might have the knowledge and tools to recognize the signal of stainless steel. Nothing, however, will remain to suggest that its original form once stood tall over a place called Texas, and breathed fire into the sky.
I cannot really describe the feeling I get from reading these portions in particular, only that it’s the strongest I ever got from any book. It’s certainly not one of joy: I don’t want humans to disappear -- in fact, there are a lot of humans among my family and friends -- and I don’t want human civilization to vanish, after the unspeakable effort it took to put together, with all the promise that, despite everything, it shows. It’s not one of sadness or fear, either. I suppose it’s just one of awe, of terrible grandeur, similar in kind to what I feel when considering the alien horror and beauty of evolved life, its sheer multi-layered complexity, or the unthinkable vastness of geological time.

May 22nd, 2011 Joplin EF5
Tumblr media
Photo of the aftermath of the tornado
May 22nd, 2011
The Events
(A note before we start, kilometers and Kph are rounded up if over .5, and rounded down if .5 or less)
12 years ago, one of the deadliest tornadoes in American history occurred, the deadliest tornado since April 9, 1947. The May 22nd Joplin Tornado. The tornado initially touched down at 5:34pm in Newton County and was quickly reported to be a multi vortex storm. The tornado tore up trees, whilst heading ENE, where it damaged more trees and some buildings, all whilst continuing to widen.
Tumblr media
Impacted areas of damage. Catastrophic damage welly shows the main path of the vortex
The tornado made its way to Twin Hills Country Club, at EF3 intensity, and caused major and catastrophic damage to many houses and tossing cars, sometimes into houses. It proceeded to tear through multiple more subdivisions, while strengthening to an EF4 tornado. The tornado caused extreme damage to homes, cars, and business, collapsing concrete walls. A steel reinforced step and floor medical building was "deflected upward several inches and cracked." Steel trusses and beams of several buildings were heavily warped and twisted. Vehicles were thrown into buildings and trees, becoming wrapped around them. The tornado continued its progress through southern Joplin with no signs of stopping. The St. John's Regional Medical Center had most of its windows destroyed, floors and ceilings heavily damaged, and was missing large parts of its roof. The life flight helicopter was blown away and mangled. Debris and medical records from the hospital were found miles away in a neighboring counties. The inability to restore power directly resulted in the death of 5 individuals. The damage to the building was examined, and the NWS stated that it showed signs of windspeeds equal to or over 200mph (320kph). The hospital would eventually be torn down due to the damage.
Tumblr media
Damage done to the hospital
A thrown semi trucks wrapped around a tree, and nearly every house from McClelland Boulevard and 26th Street was damaged severely or completely swept away. During this time, the tornado gained EF5 strength. All buildings in the tornadoes path were near completely destroyed, or completely destroyed, as it progressed through Main street (route 43) and between 20th and 26th street.
Tumblr media
Hook echo from the tornado as it went on its destructive path. It leveled entire neighborhoods, as it tracked just south of the downtown area of Joplin. The tornado would eventually hit Joplin High School, which was luckily empty at the time due to a graduation ceremony going on in a different area. The Greenbrier nursing home was completely destroyed, resulting in the death of 21 people. The tornado continued, impacting a pizza hut. Store Manager Christopher Lucas lead his employees and several customers/people seeking shelter, into the walk in freezer. Unable to close the door, he would tie a bungee chord around it, and around his arm. As the tornado approached, the building was destroyed, and Lucas was sucked out and killed, leaving behind his wife and three children. All other individuals in the freezer survived. The tornado then struck a Walmart and home depot, along with several other business. The roof of the Walmart would collapse in, killing several people. The asphalt in the Walmart parking lot and other nearby lots had been scoured. Multiple more businesses such as a Acadamey Sports, and Pepsi distribution center were destroyed. 100-pound (45kg) manhole covers had been undone and throw, which shows that by now, windspeeds well surpassed 200mph (320kph). Most fatalities of the tornado were caused in this region, due to a high amount of homes and impacts on retail stores and restaurants. EF5 damage progressed a bit longer, destroying more houses and industrial/commercial buildings. Large metal warehouses were swept away, and heavy industrial vehicles thrown 400 yards (370 m). A concrete block and steel building was destroyed. The tornado proceeded to destroy a gas station and connivence store, the last of its EF5 damage, but not the end of the nightmare.
Tumblr media
The safety deposit box of a bank was the only part of the bank left standing.
The tornado continued with an east to east-southeast movement heading to I-44, where it began to weaken. Vehicles were thrown from the interstate near US-71. Damage reports after show damage here ranging from EF2-3 damage. The tornado continued to Jasper and Newton county, dealing damage to homes, trees, and several other buildings with EF0-1 damage. It would lift east of the town of Diamond at 6:20pm, after 50 minutes.
AFTERMATH
The path of the tornado was 21.62 miles (34.79 km) long.
At its widest point, it was 1,600 yards (1,500 m) across.
The tornado caused a total of $2,800,000,000usd in damage
The tornado caused 161 deaths, and 1,150 injuries. Most deaths occurred at home. 5 were killed at the hospital as their ventilators went out with no power. 5 were killed semi indirectly when a Mucormycosis outbreak occurred during the aftermath in the area. 18 people committed suicide after the disaster.
944 pets were rescued according to officials.
Tumblr media
A neighborhood ravaged by the twister. Picture was taken 10 days later.
It destroyed 7,964 buildings according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. FEMA reports that 8,264 had been impacted, over half of which were destroyed. An estimated 4000 electrical poles were damaged. And 110 miles (161km) of electrical lines brought down. 20,000 people were left with no power, and many would not get it back for 10-12 days. The electrical damage alone costed nearly $25.700.000USD. Major damage to water caused 4000 leaks from water service lines, creating a boil water notice. 3,500 gas meters and 55,000 feet of gas main were damaged, some of which could not be turned off due to providing critical facilities gas, such as hospitals and medical buildings. Freeman Health System was the only hospital in the city left standing after the event.
How did so many people die?
An article from Reuters (Many failed to heed Joplin tornado warnings, report says | Reuters) explains why so many people died from the tornado.
“The vast majority of Joplin residents did not immediately take protective action upon receiving a first indication of risk, regardless of the source of the warning,” is stated. Despite sirens being turned on for 20 minutes prior to the storm impacting, many residents of Joplin simply...didn't do anything. This is on top of warnings issued via TV, Radio, and other forms of media. The report further states “Instead, the majority of Joplin residents did not take protective action until processing additional credible confirmation of the threat,”. This confirmation included noting darkening skies or checking these other forms of media after hearing the sirens. The NWS did a lot to issue warnings, but it simply didn't work. Some people may have heard the sirens and thought to themselves about how often they may go off for tornado threats, that don't impact their area. This has become a common issue in areas that experience tornadoes. Many people simply don't think it'll happen to them, until it does. I don't think the people should be looked upon negatively for this, I can understand in some ways, why they may not take shelter after several previous warnings resulted in nothing in their region. However, you can never guarantee it won't happen to you, and the best thing anyone can do is to take all advisories seriously, and be ready to shelter at a moment's notice, or be in a shelter when issues start happening.
The Joplin tornado is incredibly infamous due to the damage it caused, and people it killed. It also serves as a warning about taking weather safety seriously. As I said, no one thinks it'll happen to them, until it does, and when that occurs, the results are often fatal. I'm going to end this with some pics I've taken on google maps, pointing out some things in relation to Joplin and how it is now. Joplin is once again a large and busy city, but it will never forget this incident that has caused immense grief and devastation, and I hope the city may never again go through such an event.
Tumblr media
Note the ground, most regions of Joplin are grassy, but damaged regions are brown from grass not growing. Other areas have hefty amounts of trees, but areas in the path have many less trees.
Tumblr media
Many areas of Joplin also have homes missing, that were never rebuilt. This can be due to owners simply leaving the area, or people not interested in getting a home built in an area that could be prone to another tornado.
Tumblr media
The path of the tornado is easily visible, between the areas in northern Joplin which still have greenery, and the affected areas in the south, with scoured land.

On January 21st 1890 the Forth Bridge was first tested when  two 1,000ft long test trains, each comprising a locomotive and 50 wagons, and each weighing 900 tons, rolled onto the newly-built Forth Bridge side by side from the south.
The Forth Bridge was, and indeed, is, an engineering marvel when it opened, and it still carries up to 200 trains a day, a remarkable feat for a bridge over 130 years old!
Ferries had crossed the Firth of Forth to link Edinburgh to the north of Scotland since at least the 12th century. Engineers proposed bridges as early as 1818, and work finally began on a design by Thomas Bouch in the 1870s. That project stopped abruptly after Bouch's Firth of Tay suspension bridge blew down in a gale in 1879 while carrying a passenger train, killing 75 people.
John Fowler and Benjamin Baker submitted a design in 1881 for a cantilever bridge made of modern steel to carry rails across the Forth. Factories were built on site to cut and shape the steel, and a new town housed 4,000 workers.
Three 330-foot towers went up, each atop four separate foundations. The towers cantilevered out toward one another, not quite touching. Machinery hoisted two 350-foot truss spans into place to be supported by the ends of the cantilever arms. Result: two clear spans of 1,710 feet each and a total length of 5,350 feet, not counting the approaches.
The muscular design, with its massive cross-bracing and 58,000 tons of steel, was hailed as a triumph of Victorian engineering on its completion in 1890. Fowler's knighthood was upgraded to a baronetcy, and both Baker and head contractor William Arrol received knighthoods of their own.
But the Forth Bridge was also criticized as expensive (3.2 million pounds, or almost 400 million pound in today's money) and "unnecessarily" strong. One such critic would live to regret his words. Theodore Cooper's design for the Quebec Bridge over Canada's St. Lawrence River used much lighter structural members. It collapsed while under construction in 1907, sending 19,000 tons of steel into the river and killing 82 construction workers.
The Forth Bridge still has the world's second-longest cantilever spans, and trains still run over it every day. It has been called the Forth Rail Bridge after completion of the Forth Road Bridge in 1964.
The Forth Bridge was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by United Nations body UNESCO in July 2015 at its meeting in Bonn, Germany. It becomes Scotland's sixth World Heritage Site and now enjoys the same status as the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China.

"Headquarters of the Province of Antwerp", Antwerp, Belgium [2019] _ Architects: XDGA | Xaveer De Geyter Architects _ Photos by Spyros Kaprinis [08.05.2023]. "The new building replaces a complex of modernist building volumes that used to occupy the entire site and that could not be adapted to today’s sustainability standards. As the Antwerp city centre has few public green surfaces, the transformation of the site from a merely private, mineral and infrastructural area into a public garden is a crucial requirement of the competition brief. Surrounded by fragments of public green, the parcel is key to the formation of a larger, coherent park. Another – contradictory - demand was to maintain a more recent representational pavilion, which was positioned as an obstacle in between the fragments. By situating the full program in a compact volume across the pavilion, this frontage is cut up and the main entrance is brought close to the street. This large volume, however, divides the park in a front and a back garden. Finally, by rotating the plan around one of its corners as it climbs up, the building shifts towards the centre; existing neighbouring buildings are respected and a sculptural form emerges. During the design process the pavilion building is at last replaced by a glazed volume to house the congress and exhibition part of the programme. The building is conceived as a bridge structure over and across the pavilion. At the centre of the plan one large steel truss spans from one core to the other. Two more trusses are integrated in the concrete side walls and their triangulation defines the form of the window openings. In a next step this window form is applied all over the building as it turns out to be very efficient when it comes to an ideal balance between daylight access and overheating by the sun. The opaque façade is clad in circular, white glass mosaic while the pavilion is a fully transparent box in the park." https://xdga.be/project/province-headquarters

How Steel Frame Construction Can Help Meet Sustainable Building Standards
Tumblr media
Sustainable building practices are becoming increasingly important in the construction industry. As a result, builders are looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact of their projects while maintaining high levels of quality and safety. Steel frame construction is a sustainable building method that can help meet sustainable building standards. In this article, we explore how steel frame construction can contribute to sustainability in building projects.
Reducing Waste
Steel frame construction can help reduce waste during the construction process. The prefabrication of steel frames off-site means that there is less waste generated on the construction site. Additionally, the steel used in frame construction is recyclable, which means that it can be repurposed at the end of the structure’s life cycle. By reducing waste, steel frame construction can help builders meet sustainable building standards that require a reduction in construction waste.
Energy Efficiency
Steel frame construction can contribute to energy efficiency in building projects. Steel frames can be designed to allow for insulation to be added between the frame and the exterior of the building. This insulation can help to reduce the amount of energy needed to heat and cool the building, which can lead to significant cost savings and reduced environmental impact. Energy efficiency is an essential factor in meeting sustainable building standards, and steel frame construction can help builders achieve these standards.
Reduced Water Usage
Steel frame construction can help reduce water usage during the construction process. Because steel frames are pre-fabricated off-site, there is less need for water on the construction site. Additionally, steel frames can be designed to allow for rainwater harvesting systems to be installed. These systems can collect rainwater for use in irrigation and other non-potable uses, reducing the amount of water needed from traditional sources. By reducing water usage, steel frame construction can help builders meet sustainable building standards that require a reduction in water usage.
Durability and Longevity
Steel frame construction can contribute to sustainability by providing structures that are durable and long-lasting. Because steel is a durable material, structures built with steel frames can last for decades with minimal maintenance. This reduces the need for frequent repairs or replacements, which can be expensive and have a significant environmental impact. Additionally, because steel is recyclable, the frame can be repurposed at the end of its life cycle, reducing waste and contributing to sustainability.
Reduced Environmental Impact
Steel frame construction can help reduce the environmental impact of building projects. The use of steel frames can reduce the amount of waste generated during the construction process, reduce water usage, and contribute to energy efficiency. Additionally, steel is a recyclable material, which means that it can be reused or repurposed at the end of its life cycle. By reducing the environmental impact of building projects, steel frame construction can help builders meet sustainable building standards.
Sustainable building practices are becoming increasingly important in the construction industry. Steel frame construction is a sustainable building method that can help builders meet sustainable building standards. Steel frame construction can contribute to sustainability by reducing waste, improving energy efficiency, reducing water usage, providing durable structures, and reducing the environmental impact of building projects. By incorporating steel frame construction into their building projects, builders can achieve sustainability goals and contribute to a more sustainable future.
If you’re considering a steel framed house, we would be more than happy to discuss your options further. Get in touch today.

Strength And Style: 5 Advantages Of Timber Roof Trusses In The Hunter Valley Region
Did you know that timber is among the oldest building materials used by man for thousands of years? Timber in Hunter Valley is not only to keep this tradition alive but also to provide a better option for modern buildings. Timber roof trusses have specifically designed wooden frames that have become popular for their strength and aesthetics, providing environmental benefits.
Tumblr media
In this article, we will explore the top five benefits of timber roof trusses and see how they help lift the strength and style of your house in Hunter Valley.
Construction Speed
Some of the benefits of the timber roof trusses Hunter Valley Region include the fact that building with them is faster. These trusses are prepared in a factory. Such preparedness cuts the time that would have been taken to put up a roof since it will only need fixing. Not only does this bring the advantage of having a faster building, but it also reduces the cost of building. This, in essence, ensures that builders do not have to wait for a long time in the Hunter Valley area or, better yet, have homes built in a manner that is already good to be occupied.
Environmental Benefits
Timber roof trusses enhance the aesthetic and functional elements of a building while ensuring environmental benefits in many ways because they are made up of wood, a natural and renewable resource. Here's how:
Trees naturally have the capability, through growth, to take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store carbon in the wood. When timber is used as a construction material, this carbon is sequestered and not added to the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Trussing timber is sourced from sustainably managed forests. The forests are replanted, ensuring a continuous supply of wood. At the same time, it enhances increased biodiversity, reducing erosion and water quality.
It requires less energy to produce timber trusses than other construction material products. For example, steel and concrete depend on massive fossil fuel use for their production.
Durability
Timber roof trusses Hunter Valley Region are renowned for their strength and durability. When designed and built correctly, they can support heavy loads and withstand harsh weather conditions. Additionally, timber is naturally resistant to rot and decay, giving it a long lifespan when used in construction.
Budget Friendly
Another significant advantage of using timber roof trusses is that they are very economical, with low production cost, since they are primarily mass-produced offsite. They are further lighter and easier to transport, reducing construction costs. No heavy machinery or complex logistics are required; you would need only simplicity and efficiency in installation. All in all, timber roof trusses provide an innovative and very cost-effective solution to your building project without compromising on quality or strength.
Conclusion
Therefore, timber roof trusses Hunter Valley region shingles, being an excellent choice, present great benefits. Not only do they economize on time spent during the building process, but they also add to the green credential of the project. Highly strong in terms of durability, they guarantee a long life through the support and stability of your structure.
Besides this, timber roof trusses are cost-effective and pocket-friendly from production to delivery and installation. Affordability is underscored further in how they can be tailored and refined to ensure that a broad spectrum of projects is achieved. This ensures that your building process is very smooth and efficient.

Sustainable Trends in Home Renovations and Building
Tumblr media
Sustainable and eco-friendly approaches to renovating and building houses have gained popularity in recent years. Lately, the focus has been on low-flow fixtures, water-efficient appliances, and tankless water heaters as sustainable, eco-friendly features. In addition to upgrading their appliances, homeowners integrate sustainability into their building projects.
Renovation projects in 2024 also emphasize using recycled materials and reducing waste as a part of home improvement projects. Using reclaimed wood has been one approach to decreasing reliance on wood from trees, minimizing deforestation. Not only are homeowners focusing on the materials used, but they are also shopping locally, choosing locally sourced materials and contractors. Going with local materials and contractors reduces the carbon footprint that transportation and traveling contribute to.
In 2024, homeowners are redesigning their places to be minimalist and multifunctional. Simplicity and function are the order of the day for many homeowners who seek to get most of the space they have because, in some cases, they do not have much space. For example, minimalism and multifunctionality work great for homes in urban places.
Homeowners and the designers helping them might create innovative layouts that allow a desk to transform into a bed or a kitchen island that can also function as a dining table. These innovative tricks that minimize space and maximize function also de-clutter space. Again, these spaces offer homeowners a harmonious, efficient experience that does not limit them on style or comfort.
Homeowners are also embracing natural light and biophilic designs. Skylights and large windows have become popular features that enable homeowners to bring more light into their homes. These fixtures radiate large amounts of light in interiors during the day, minimizing reliance on artificial light and reducing electricity costs. Besides relying on renovations that allow more light into the home, adding natural elements to the house, such as indoor plants, green walls, and stone and other natural materials, has been another trend in home renovations. By integrating natural lighting and materials, homeowners have created spaces that are not only environmentally friendly but also harmonious with nature.
Outside of simple renovations, homeowners use alternative methods for building their homes. For instance, one trend is to exchange the typical single-family home for a home created out of shipping containers. Yes, the exact shipping containers seen in any of the country's ports have become a staple material in housing. Usually, these containers are discarded after use, but using them as the house's structure is a chance for these metals to upcycle them. These homes are constructed from shipping containers combined to create a home's skeleton.
Outside of being a way to reuse material, using shipping containers saves contractors time because they provide the home with structure, something the builder would have to do. Plus, these containers can sit next to each other or be placed on top to save space, and aluminum and steel are durable materials.
Modular construction is another approach to building a home that offers sustainability and eco-friendliness. This method of homebuilding builds part of the home offsite and then assembles these parts at the house's location. Usually, the roof, the home's trusses (beams connected by nodes), or framed wall pieces are built elsewhere and connected to the house. One of the positive aspects of modular construction where sustainability is concerned is that it minimizes consumption. Offsite construction enables builders to use the best equipment to construct pieces, requiring less labor and reducing the amount of waste generated. With a more efficient building method, builders reduce timelines, contribute to a decreased carbon footprint, and reduce costs.
