okay y'all, i've never actually done something like this but i decided on a whim the other day to start a sewing project, and i'm gonna do my best to document it here just for my own enjoyment lol!

the goal is basically to take this jacket (pictured below) that I bought on amazon for a kotlc halloween costume a few years ago and spruce it up a bit

the current plans are to:

reinforce the bottom edge of the skirt part so it has a little more structure

replace the buttons with ones that a) look nicer and b) are more durable (right now they're plastic and also have this crown/crest design that almost feels like it belongs on a flag or something??? idk I just don't like them very much and wanna have different ones)

maybe do some embroidery on the bottom edge of the skirt (and potentially other areas as well)??? i haven't fully decided yet but leaning towards yes if I can manage to teach myself embroidery before my interest in this project disappears lol

(i might also do something with the zipper pull, i can't really decide if i fully like it as is but that's a thing for future me to worry about haha)

but yeah i think the vision is mostly just fun jacket with vaguely steampunk-space-pirate vibes (à la the mechs lol) so we'll see what happens!

I don’t think you can see it very well, but this is actually my Virgil Sanders jacket, but I do wear it a lot and similarly with the choker. I don’t wear the goggles too much, but that’s just because they give me a headache after 30 minutes — an hour.

Alright so, I'm thinking of doing a Lil art series where I draw the characters from twisted wonderland, but they have to be in outfits I own and have worn, since I've been trying to be more fashionable lately. I grabbed a collection of outfits and assigned each one to a boy, and did not realize how many skirts I wear until now so if you like boys in skirts, I may be giving you something fun soon.

Meiji period fashion was some of the best in the world, speaking purely from an aesthetic standpoint you can really see the collision of European and Japanese standards of beauty and how their broad agreement even in particulars (the similarity between Japanese and Gibson girl bouffants, the obi vs the corset, the obi knot vs the bustle, the mutual covetousness for exotic textiles, the feverish swapping of both art styles and subjects) combined and produced some of the most interesting cultural exchange we have this level of documentation for. Europeans were wearing kimono or adapting them into tea gowns, japanese were pairing lacy Edwardian blouses with skirt hakama and little button up boots. haori jackets with bowler hats and European style lapels. if steampunk was any good as an aesthetic it would steal wholesale from the copious records we have in both graphic arts and photography of how people were dressing in this milieu.

I haven't decided on a specific outfit, except not the tan/beige coat (because the color would look unflattering on me personally haha). I'd lean toward the grey one, and I'm intrigued by the the silk(?) ikat(?) waistcoat that I think we only see her wear at the very end of ep 4. of course, that would be the hardest fabric to find a match for... so maybe not 😅

and I haven't stared closely enough at her dancing outfit, but I'm pretty sure you're right that all the skirts are split skirts, which I love! I also love that she always has the chatelaine with her notebook.

I honestly don't know if I'll ever get to making a whole outfit, but I do definitely plan to knit her hat.

and I don't have any concrete thoughts about steampunk in-universe, except that it would be fun! I'll get back to you if something comes to me, though :D I went through a big steampunk phase in the 2000s and just generally love the mixing of weird technology with victorian-era style, so the whole setting of the show just sparked me thinking about it again. and I think Fogg would enjoy science/technology shenanigans, too.
