How to know if you can afford to start reading that new fic tonight

Step 1: Take a free reading speed test online. Make sure it's free and gives you results in words-per-minute.

Step 2: Read at the leisurely speed you normally would when reading a fic. DO NOT RUSH!

Step 3: When you get your reading speed MEMORIZE THIS NUMBER FOREVER (or just write it down somewhere, I guess).

Step 4: Take the word count of the fic you want to read and divide it by your reading speed. For example: my relaxed reading speed is 180 words per minute. If I'm reading a 50k word fic, it would be 50,000/180=277.78. This means it would take me roughly 278 minutes to read a 50k fic.

Step 5: Divide that number by 60 (For example: 278/60=4.6. This means it would take me 4 and a half hours to read a 50k word fic)

And now you know, before deciding to start a new fic at 11pm, how much time you risk investing if you accidentally get sucked in.

(Which, for me, would mean starting that 50k fic would result in me staying up until 4AM)
