Muse full gigs
Some full shows that are available, for anyone who wants to partially relive the Muse live experience.
I figured no one's made lists in a while.
La Cigale, Paris By-Request gig 2018
youtube
rarities + I guarantee I'm gonna fuck up Space Dementia + water spitting + Matt and Dom playing Grammy hosts in the way they announced the winners of the by-request polls
Some cool and noteworthy gigs:
Live Lounge 2012
The Mayan 2015 (performance wise this gig was stunning)
Royal Albert Hall 2008 (Teenage Cancer Trust charity gig - Megalomania on the pipe organ!)
Reading Festival 2011 (10 years of Origin of Symmetry - played the album start to finish)
AOL Sessions 2006
Reading 2006 (Muse's first time headlining if I remember right. Plus, Matt's moves!)
Glastonbury 2004 (first Glasto headline and a must-watch! Of the iconic mad-scientist, white lab coat era. Muse had called it the best gig of their life so far, at the time) (*Ruled By Secrecy was played live but wasn't included in the concert footage DVD and isn't in this video upload either)
Montreaux Jazz 2002 (height of piano maniac-ery days. Would also recommend Pinkpop 2002 but they don't. have. the footage anymore :( Space Dementia at Pinkpop 2002 was phenomenal. 2004 is also good, but I never found 2002 again. Speaking of which,)
Pinkpop 2004 (most songs are in, a few performances missing unfortunately)
MCM Café 1999 (marvel at what a good live act this young band aged 21 already was—with about 4 years of gigging experience under their belts. Insane how good they are.)
Wembley 2007 (H.A.A.R.P. The first band to sell out the newly rebuilt Wembley Stadium. 90,000 people. You need to understand, seeing Chris lift up and point his bass at the crowd at the end of the slightly modified Jimmy Jam riff before Time Is Running Out was a religious experience that changed me and we're lucky enough to live in an age where you and I can witness it over and over and over again and I'd suggest that you do)
Rock Am Ring 2018, uploaded to the Internet Archive by the Muse Historical Society!
Austin City Limits 2013 Philipshalle 1999 Philipshalle 2001 (all suggested in notes, check out the crystal clear gifs from @hotbellamy! :O )
A few additions I remembered after publishing: Eurockeennes 2000 (opened with a then-unreleased New Born. Matt playing a full gig in red sunglasses. Treat to watch. Link's stretched up to fit modern screens but if you want a bit of clarity and don't mind the late 90s ratio stretch, here's a different link) 2002 (quality's a bit shit but that is literally what telly used to look like)
Shepherd's Bush Empire 2006 (Early gigs are always interesting because over time Muse develop different ways of playing songs that are fresh off new albums. The way they work through Take A Bow live is a bit different here, Dom's the one controlling the opening verse synths! During the Abso tour, Matt would play that bit on the piano as an intro to Space Dementia and if I'm remembering right, he does now on the pianos (correct me—this was on the ST tour as well). Also, Starlight in Bm at this gig)
Big Day Out (Australia) 2004 | 2007. Muse's first tour Down Under, 2004. If you're impressed by Muse's riffage here, know that you aren't alone, Metallica's Kirk Hammett was as impressed as you are. Also I've linked 2007, presented by the V channel, featuring Matt asking a male interviewer, 'Do you feel sexy now?' and famously proclaiming that they'll look sexier in their 40s, which has been true.
Rock Werchter 2023 (Muse play Rock Werchter in Belgium almost every year, except for the pandemic and 2012 I think, but this year's was a bit special. Best performance of Madness I've seen in a while, I love what he does in the outro! MOTP returns to the set. Muse had tech troubles at the end that caused them to restart Knights of Cydonia twice, to no avail. They finally cut it back for a guitar-bass-drum-vocals-only performance of Showbiz, and Matt's voice sounds exceptional on it— the best in recent years)
Bizarre Fest 2000 (BLESS SOMEONE HAS RESTORED THIS FROM VHS TAPE IN HD, this is so much better than back in the day!! If the falsetto at 1:13 doesn't do it for you, you're into the wrong band, nothing else will help. What an electric performance this was!)
Buenos Aires 2019 (livestreamed Simulation Theory-era gig in Argentina, because the set was changed at the last minute because of adverse weather, Muse gave the audience a choice of song between Bliss and Showbiz. The crowd chose Showbiz, which the band played for... the first time since 2006 I think??)
Gigs from WOTP 2022/23 festivals tour last summer:
Nova Rock Rock In Rio Ejekt Fest Isle of Wight ALTer EGO Jan 2023 (as Muse had talked about in that iHeart Radio IG Live) Hurricane Festival 2023 (a festival at which Matt once complained that Muse's set was cut short by... hurricanes. But the audio mixing at this gig was really good!)
These are in no particular order, and obviously not complete, I just realised no one had put together a gig archive in a while so I thought I'd give it a stab!
Will edit and add others whenever, there are obviously glaring omissions still!

Animation Night 160: Calarts student films, 2023
Good evening friends! Today is a crazy busy day so the introduction will be very minimal (I'm writing this on my phone on a train lol), but I still wanna run Animation Night, so here's the plan.
First up though! In a week's time I'm going to the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, which takes place in the town of Annecy, next to Annecy Lake, in the southeast of France near the Swiss border. Two years ago, during the height of the pandemic, Annecy ran a partly-online version of the film festival and I had a great time watching all their short films; now I've finally been able to save up enough to go for real! It's crazy exciting and a little scary, I haven't been to anything even resembling a film festival since the nine worlds convention nearly a decade ago now ^^'
So, I don't know whether it will be practical to run Animation Night from my hotel, it would be good if I could but it may have to be the first week we miss in more than three years T_T. But, if you're by any chance also coming to Annecy and would like to hang out, I would love to have some people to meet there ^^ And you can bet I'll be writing all about it on here.
Anyway... As you know unless you're a space alien (in which case, hi!), every year animation students go to animation schools to learn this ridiculous art form. One of the most effective ways to learn to make animated films is to... make animated films, going through the whole process from planning to finishing. The schools thus dedicate a large portion of each year to having their students make a short film, typically a few minutes long.
Different schools handle this process in different ways. At Gobelins in France, the students form small teams and work on a film together, and given how consistent and polished their films tend to be, I assume they're quite closely supervised. This is not true elsewhere...
CalArts, near LA, is another one of the most prestigious schools, and a lot of renowned animators both in the states and even internationally (e.g. sakuga stars like Weilin Zhang and Curie Lu) went there - which leads to design trends in American animation (notably the 'bean head') sometimes getting spuriously attributed to a CalArts house style, rather than studio execs being very conservative in what they'll approve.
Compared to Gobelins, it seems that CalArts students tend to make their films largely solo, or at least in much smaller groups, and they're also made every year rather than just for graduation. The results tend to be wildly varied in both style and content, depending on what the students bring. They might be a lot more raw, but that also gives the possibility of really unique and unexpected stuff, and equally I find it interesting to see people at an earlier stage on the road...
So. A year ago on AN109 we watched through the playlist, and saw some real delights like Operago. Tonight I think it would be fun to check out this year's offerings. Unlike Gobelins, which releases everything on its official channel, CalArts students tend to put their films up on personal channels which means finding them can be a bit fiddly. But for a preview, check out this list someone made; at 35 films it's probably very incomplete so I'll be searching for more that are missing. Besides the Gobelins, I have a few other short films to show so we should have plenty to watch.
I'll be starting late, probably around midnight UK time, which is about 4pm in California; apologies that it just isn't possible to start earlier ^^' The place will be twitch.tv/canmom as ever, hope to see you there!
(And if you'd like something else to watch in the meantime, my vtuber friend Yuri Heart is gonna be on tonight too starting around 10:30, and I know she'd also appreciate some company!)

Lastart episode 7
I had to watch the episode using VPN (on a Russian site, of all places, why is the site on the restricted list of my provider?), so the video was buffering all the time... urgh, the torture. The buffering got extremely severe during the line up reveal. Took me half of the day to finish watching, lol.
Kassho seems to not want to debut, there was self-sabotaging going on, he didn't improve his facial expression at all. I get it, he is still very young and was only 6 months into training, he was intimidated, and the judges echoed his own opinion.
Sion really lowkey irritates me, heh. He needs less praise and more whip to make him improve. How to describe it. His moves are not pretty, he moves like a potato sack, limbs all over the place, but he shows confidence of "I got it", so he comes off as arrogant, with "I'm really good" attitude to performing. Other trainees lack, but they also excude "I'm amateur, I'm afraid". I'm nots saying he does it intentionally, he is not arrogant in character, he is just not the type to push himself to the extremes like Hyuk or Taeyong are, spend hours before the mirror and scrutinise every detail. He needs to be pushed by someone, said "not enough".
It was nice to see Taeyong in the hyung and mentor role, the side of him that is rarely seen in 127, and certanly not around Doyoung. He impressed me more than the rest of SM idols. He is closer in age to the trainees and he is empathetic, so he came off as very welcoming. He didn't sugarcoat anything and actually chided the guys for not giving their everything, not treating the debut as seriously as neos did in the past. I get him, adding new members is bittersweet for him, he wants to see worthy people.
All vocals have problems with sore throat. Well, what a surprise, am I right? Not teaching support and healthy techniques and then giving all the demanding notes.
Riku is good at dancing. At least the expressive part, he finishes his moves.
Honestly tired of YuSion praise. We get it, they will debut, no need to advertise them for 10 minutes each episode, heh. Yuushi sang his part well though.
Johnny realises that he dances heavy, hm (his height is in the way). He improved after the pandemic. Agree with him about Jungmin. Right now Jungmin is like a sloth. The way Doyoung is noticeably more languid than the rest in BgJ choreo.
For some reason I constantly forget Jungmin is Korean and get surprised he understands Korean so well, lmao.
Well. The final line up reveal. They did a surprise move with the 2nd place, not gonna lie. Not the trainee, but his placement. Way to say "you expected Jungmin or Riku, huh?".
The blooming of that cheeky tiny smile on Riku's face, heh. He expected to debut (with his scores, duh), but he felt very pleased with the rank. You see, Riku realises he needs to fill in the shoes, that's why I like him, he is like Taeyong, he will improve relentlessly, some others don't feel the burden really...
I expected the 7th place by this point. The gut feeling intensified when they said "good at singing". The judges praised Ryo a lot in the last performance. And he is a Japanese. He is really in his growing spurt period, huh? He lost some baby fat even. SM really wanted maknaes in the group.
I felt like Anderson started to lose his chance by the 3d performance, maybe. He differed from others in the way he moved, he didn't blend in. Him not being a Japanese and not knowing the languages didn't help. Welp, it was still a good training camp for him. Coming first among those not accepted is the hardest feeling. When you are at the bottom you feel the gap, accept the difference in skill, when you end up right behind the one who made it, there is just devastation and no consolation. Hm, so he still wants to debut as an idol. He has a high chance with the next SM bg if he won't change his mind. In his case losing here is probably for the best. He won't need to be stuck in Japan.
Jungmin's face in the final line up, when Ryo joined, lmao. His resting face is so funny.
I don't think Ryu will stick with SM, with his brother in the music scene, he will have other connectiosn and opportunities. Somehow I see Minjae switching companies as well. Haruta matches Anderson. If the next SM bg will have more of a "neighbours" concept, he will fit in. I think Heitetsu will leave after his trainee period is over, his personality suits acting path more. SM won't let go of Kassho voluntary, but will he fit the concept of the next bg...
OK, my personal scale from most liked to least liked: Jungmin, Riku, Daeyoung> Ryo, Yuushi, Sakuya>>>Sion.
Sakuya is nice, he will be a good idol, his maknae on top shtick will help during variety, he is just too sweet for me in the face. Ryo is also sweet, but he has some pinch of awkwardness/naivette in him that is more adorable. Energetic destructive puppy vs pronking goat kid kind of difference. Plus SM staff seems to be of a good opinion about his singing (potential). Yuushi is boringly introverted, but he is better than the kids on stage, and his tone of voice is a plus. Him and Riku will be good centres.
Aside from shown skills the top three are attractive to me for their desire to improve, that visible deterimation. I feel I can trust them the unit, with the NCT name. Riku will take the unofficial leadership in no time.

#1: Whirlwind
It's been a while since I wrote something in here. Wanted to document stuff here so the future me could look back at something.
Life had been so quick lately and I have been extremely busy and sort of overworked in a sense that it is also actually my fault.
Long story short: I have graduated from my undergrad, currently reviewing for the licensure exam (which, at this point of my life, idk if I can actually take), and is starting med school literally in 3 days.
It's kinda insane to think about how stagnant my life had become back during the height of the pandemic and then I've been extremely busy. Looking back, God truly had the best timing in life.
I took a 6-month break from studying and I was privileged enough to be able to do that. I realized I wasn't learning anything at all with the online setup, worry about the pandemic, and just the overall changes in environment - a quick talk to my parents have made me decide that they are willing to let me rest for a while. During that period, I've always pondered about how stagnant and slow my life had become. It had been some sort of baggage in me. Seeing peers graduate and achieve success, whereas I'm still in the middle of the battlefield. I was at home, feeling alone and left out. It was a double-edge sword. I was able to rest but I was also k*lling myself with defeating discouragement. It was prolly one of my bravest decision.
While I do not regret that decision, I always think of "what could haves." What could have happened if I didn't pause? What could have happened if I did things differently? It was futile!
When 2022 came in, I was willing to do everything I could, determine to finish this program and to race towards my dreams. And that's when the perfect timing came in, I was given the opportunity to practice clinical internship on actual hospital, was given opportunity to learn outside the computer screen again. And for me, that was all what I desired at that moment. Albeit, I had to sacrifice many things to move to the province to be able to do this. I had to do my very best since everyone was counting on me.
Stopping by one semester means I have to wait. The waiting game was killing me. I finished the program. Med school doesn't start until the middle of the year. I had nothing left to do. I wasn't planning on taking the licensure exam, just letting life takes its course. A random one day in the 3rd month of the year, I had a conversation with a friend where she asked me whether I'll be taking the board exam. The lingering feelings I had after that conversation had me thinking that maybe I really do have a desire to have a license on my undergrad course. I busted my ass out and quickly prepared all the materials and papers needed for the licensure exam, as well as my med school application. I was able to enroll on April, but review would only start at June. That gave me two months to actually properly review for the exams.
In between leisures and entertainment, June quickly came in and I had virtually zero rest since then. Classes are daily. We had to cram 4-year worth of study materials in 1 month so we could focus the other remaining one month for reinforcement. It was physically taxing and mentally draining. And I'm surprise that I had zero mental breakdown since review started. My sensitive teenage self would be so proud of what I have become.
And after a long waiting game, we finally had our graduation ceremony. I wasn't excited about it if I were to be honest. It kind of feels like I have many things on my plate right now. But just this afternoon, I had a self-reflection and realized just how thankful I am that I have come this far.
Med school is starting in Monday. Board exam is in two weeks. Everything is happening so fast now. I am scared, and anxious but the excitement overpowers anything. There's a certain optimism living in me. Idk if it's just the bliss of innocence left in me or if it's my blind faith to something unseen. I may or may not receive a good news next month, but If I have learned anything for the past years is that the fact that there's always a perfect timing for everything. I'll be ready for it when it comes to me.

Pandemic Hyperfocus
I didn’t post much on fb or insta during the height of the pandemic because I still had a job. I was working from home, an essential state worker, and many of my friends are artists or work for arts organizations and were either unemployed or laid off. I spent my time focusing on doing as much for Texas artists and arts organizations as I could.
At my office, it was easy to get distracted and there were structured routines, like breaks and lunch. We were required to answer our phones when they rang - not great for someone with ADHD - so there was never really any sustained time for really getting things done. Every distraction meant I had no idea what I was doing beforehand.
Working from home, (with the exception of weeks 3 & 4 where I found myself curled up in a ball on the couch for a few hours in the middle of the day every day because we hadn’t quite figured out how to do everything from home yet and trauma), I would sit down at my desk with my coffee at 7 am most days. I would occasionally get up to go to the bathroom or get more coffee, but typically I found myself completely focused until I suddenly felt very hungry. Most of the time I would look up and it would be 4 pm and I had skipped lunch. I would run downstairs and scarf something down, then return to the computer. At 5 my husband would start reminding me to wrap up for the day. “Okay, just one more thing,” multiple times until he finally would say we needed to make dinner. 5 days a week, repeat. Sometimes start at 5 am so I could finish something before my boss got online.
I lost 20 pounds thanks to reduced access to candy, but most of the weight was muscle mass. My arms, legs,  and chest lost definition. The treadmill broke on the first day of the pandemic, and our workout space had been transformed into my office. We tried a few times to get in better shape, and managed to do a daily dog walk, but somehow working from home was so much busier - work life bled into home life in ways they didn’t when I forced myself to leave work at work.
Now I am dealing with arthritis, degenerative disk disease, high blood pressure, pre-diabetes...I did the thing they were warning us not to do. And I know it probably would’ve helped depression and mood as well, but it was all just so exhausting, wasn’t it?
I’ve had to be off my left foot for 2 months now (degenerative arthritis), during the period of the year when you are supposed to start fresh and get back in shape, and the dogs miss their walks and so do I. But I am in a position now where I have to make a change or I am not going to have the quality of life that I want. I told myself last night, after my foot finally got diagnosed that I need to make a change, and I am telling you so perhaps, I can hold myself accountable.

Zooms With His Kid | Ennoshita, Akaashi
Pairings: I mean, Y/N is absent in these.... so I guess for once, this section don matter
Genre: domestic fluff ah ha ha
Author’s Note: debuting Ennoshita!! 🥳
Warnings: Post time skip! Kids are like 1-2, almost 3 year olds but the younger, the cuter 🥰
*S/N = Son’s Name, D/N = Daughter’s Name*
Zooms with their Kid | Sugawara, Osamu // Zooms with their Kid | Sachiro, Kuroo // Zooms with their Kid | Kenma, Bokuto
Tumblr media
Ennoshita:
*he’s a physical therapist*
“So you didn’t feel any pain in your shin today?” Ennoshita worked diligently in the living room, the room lit brightly with the early morning son
“No, there was a subtle soreness in the muscle but I’ve been following the exercises you suggested before and it went away by the time the appointment started,” his patient recalled, the older man describing through his daily routines to soothe the sore pain in his legs
“Alright, that’s great,” Ennoshita spoke enthusiastically, satisfied to see his patents slowly healing even in this unprecedented pandemic
For the rest of the hour of the appointment, Ennoshita suggested a few more subtle exercises and stretches his patient could practice to further heal himself
He was so focused on talking with his patient, he didn’t even notice a small body silently descending down the carpeted stairs step by step, sliding down them, tiny hands holding onto the wooden railing banisters
“I think if you follow this routine for the next two weeks, your-“
“Dada…” his son timidly walked in a less than straight line toward him as he wrapped up some comments with his patient as the little one yawned in his pajama set, his short, brown hair messy from sleeping
He looked up to his dad, bitting on his bottom lip, his cheeks chubby and puffy as he reached for his dad, hands patting on the edge of the couch
“Ah, I’m sorry, my son woke up,” he sat S/N on his lap and continued making his remarks, the older man smiled and waved
“It’s alright, I got a few grandkids of my own,” he let out a chuckle before bidding a farewell to Ennoshita, the zoom appointment ending
“Did you come all the way down to see daddy?” He patted his son’s head, straightening his messy bed head with his fingertips
His son nodded quietly, his legs spread over his father’s lap
“Did you sleep well?” He sat his son in his lap, facing him as the little boy looked up to him, playing with his hands, his eyes so small but so bright
He gave a little nod, looking at his dad so closely
“Hm~ You’re so adorable,” he stood, lifting his son into the air as the little one let out squeals of happiness being so high up all of a sudden
Ennoshita lifted his son up and down, pressing a kiss/ blowing a raspberry into his son’s cheek every time he came down
“Alright, let’s brush your teeth, then breakfast.” He held his son on his hip as he gave a little bounce with every step heading back upstairs
Tumblr media
Akaashi:
“I think the author wanted to implement the new paragrpahs I sent to you earlier, Akaashi-kun,” the editor in chief pointed out as he shared his screen over the zoom call, addressing the points needed to be addressed for the next deadline a few weeks away
Akaashi nodded along sitting in his home office, jotting down the notes and tasks he needed to finish
Rain showered down outside while you were at your parents’ house for the weekend, leaving Akaashi home with his son during quarantine
“I know we just finished adjusting and finalizing the layout of that really reticulate page, but we will be readjusting it once again. It should be easier since we don’t have to have everything on one page like last time.”
Akaashi nodded along, diligently jotting down the points he needed to adjust before the deadline so his partner could do his part
“Daddy…” A small voice appeared around the corner of his desk, catching his peripheral as his son held onto the corner leg of the wooden desk far taller than he was
The little boy sleepily looked up to his dad with his matching sea green eyes, his hand holding a small beige blanket with little owls that looked very similar to fukurodani’s
He wore an oversized kid’s pajama that resembled his favorite uncle Bokuto’s Black Jackals jersey
“Daddy’s a bit busy right now, buddy,” Akaashi’s voice was gentle as he kooks down to his son, patting his head
“Uppie” he wobbled over to Akaashi’s seat, raising his hands up, his chin at the height where he could rest it on the edge of the seat
Akaashi was shocked to see his son here considering it meant he crawled out of a crib and walked all the way here
“Akaashi-kun, would you be able to handle it?” The chief asked Akaashi, pausing his screen sharing so now Akaashi’s display was enlarged on everyone else’s screen
“Uhm, yes, sir. I’m sorry, my son came into the room,” he hurriedly hoisted his son into his lap as the others gave a welcoming smile at the child
He curled up in his dad’s lap, shyly looking at everyone who smiled kindly to him
“Do you want to say hi?” Akaashi glanced down at his son but all the little one did was turn his head into his father’s chest, sucking on his thumb
He nuzzled himself into his father’s lap as his seat
He rest his head in the crevice of Akaashi’s left arm elbow as his father rest his hand on the desk, the other hand taking diligent notes through the rest of the meeting
S/N slowly drifted off to sleep in the comfort of his dad’s embrace, cuddling his blankie close to him, his dark hair just like his father’s disheveled

“sorry to bother you”
Summary: Y/N meets Harry in a little shop in France. It was a lovely meeting between the fan and the rockstar, but when Y/N realizes she’s lost her phone, will she see Harry sooner than she had ever thought possible?
AKA Harry meets a fan and accidentally steals her phone
Tumblr media
vibes bc they snack and she walks up to him while he’s looking at the sky lol ^
Ok so I just wanted to preface this: this was initially just going to be a short blurb about a respectful meeting between Harry and a fan because of the terrible stories I’ve been hearing lately about rude people being inconsiderate of Harry and his privacy and I wanted to showcase that you can treat Harry as a human being rather than an object when you see him irl. But then my writer brain wanted more and so it turned into more. All I have to say is if you ever meet Harry in real life, please be respectful and kind. Also there is a 0.00001 chance that this would ever actually happen as most fiction goes so please don’t expect more than a short convo and maybe a photo from him. For him to even speak with you is more than enough, he really isn’t a disneyland attraction.
Also not proofread bc apparently its long lol, I’m not super in love with this but I think it’s good-ish the end is meh - pls lemme know what yall think :)
Word Count: 10.2k (wait im actually so confused how this got so long omfg) | Warnings: swearing, angst, fluff, idrk its long but it’s sweet?
-
She saw him long before she approached him. She was truly unsure of herself, not wanting to bother him or upset him. She had been a fan for so long and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to meet someone who meant so much to her.
In the small Bayeux shop, she hesitates as she risks another glance at the tall man. She whispered to her mom minutes ago about how Harry Styles was in the same shop as them. Her mom was texting her non stop telling her to go up to him or she would do it herself. Y/N shook her head, distrusting her mom and feeling self conscious. No one else was in the store and her interaction with him wouldn’t disrupt the rest of the store, but for some reason she felt a tinge of discomfort about going up to him.
Harry leafs over a tablecloth, not paying attention to the other patrons in the store or anything else for that matter. He was staying on the coast of France for the week and he hadn’t run into many fans, so he was feeling at ease. Mitch was somewhere else in the store, but Harry felt comfortable on his own. He feels a soft, small tap on his broad shoulder. He turns expecting the quiet Mitch, but is presented with a short, sweet looking woman.
“Excuse me. Um, hi...Sorry to bother you,” she starts, eyes wide as she works to maintain eye contact with Harry as she looks up at him.
His green eyes are widened, realizing this isn’t someone he knows.
“Hello,” he says simply.
“I-” she pauses, her hands fiddling, “I’m sorry to bother you, honestly. But, your music means so much to me and I’d kick myself for the rest of my life if I didn’t say something before you left.”
He smiles, his expression softening at how genuine she sounds. “It’s quite alright.”
“It’s not though. I’m sure you’d appreciate not being bothered for once.”
“No,” he cuts her off, “I love talking with fans.”
“Yeah, but I’m sure there’s days where you wish you could just go to a random store on the coast of France - so out of the way - and not be walked up to by a random person.”
“I mean, I guess, but you seem rather nice.”
“Thanks...I’ve been a fan long enough to know that there’s people who don’t always treat you with that kind of respect. I really wouldn’t have bothered you if it wouldn’t have changed my life.”
“Don’t feel like you’re a bother, please,” he pleads lightly as he grasps her hand out of instinct, dropping it immediately when he realizes what he’s done. “It’s the people who don’t actually come up to me and treat me like an animal that are upsetting. Or the people who are only after a photo and aren’t very nice to me. You… you’re treating me like a human being. Being overly courteous -- if I’m being honest.” He chuckles lightly at the end.
She blushes at his words and smiles up at him, mirroring the soft smile on his lips. “I’m only treating you how I would want to be treated if I were in your shoes.” She glances down at his feet and notices the Gucci boots and smiles to herself, laughing lightly.
“What?”
“We’ve got the same shoes on actually.”
“No way!” His voice is playful at first as he glances down at well and realizes she’s right. He laughs at the weird little coincidence.
“I’ve had these for years, my favorite shoes…” She mumbles, seeing the ways his eyes shift  with a flash of concern. It’s what she fears he would think of her, why she was so hesitant to approach him in the first place. It’s why she had tried to hide her laugh from him when she noticed the similarity. She just wants to interact with him in a normal way. He again softens at her words, her sincerity, realizing it really just is one of those random things.
“They’re good shoes,” he laughs again, kicking his left heel with his right foot. The way she barely touched him to get his attention and the way she stays a safe distance from him is reassuring. She’s aware of his situation, yet she’s treating him with the utmost care and respect.
“So what brings you to Bayeux?” He asks, deciding he wants to continue the conversation with her. Y/N flits her eyes behind her shoulder and sees her mother watching their interaction out of the corner of her eye. She sighs and runs a hand through her hair, leaning against the counter her and Harry are at.
“Vacation, I guess. My family and I love to travel and ever since the pandemic settled down - finally, we’ve been jetting everywhere we’ve ever been or wanted to go. Seize the day vibes.” Her voice is serious, but she falters and laughs at the end. Her words are honest and she’s happy to actually get to talk to Harry more than just hello and a picture.
“I get that. You’re from America, yeah? It was really rough there for a long time.” He says solemnly, mirroring her figure, leaning against the counter, getting comfortable with her.
She laughs again, smiling up at him, eyes sparkling, completely in love with her idol, but desperately trying to play it cool. “The accent gives it away, huh? I’m trying to fix that, get a job out of the states and never go back.”
“Hey!” Harry interjects, throwing his hand out from his stance in her direction, like he might touch her, but this time being careful to not actually. “It’s not that bad. I like your accent...And I love LA.”
She can’t stop laughing with Harry. It feels so simple and common to just be talking with him. He doesn’t seem like he’s in a rush anywhere, but she also fears to take up too much of his time. “I’m originally from up north in California actually. Living in LA right now, though. But I don’t know, I’ve just always felt like I was meant to live somewhere else. Do you know how that is? Just feeling like you’re meant for something different?”
He watches the way she moves her hands and works through her thought process. He feels like in another world they would have been close friends. The way she talks about things is so familiar to him. It’s like she’s read his mind, even though he knows for sure she hasn’t. She’s funny and laid back, yet mature at the same time. He wonders how old she is, out of college it seems if she’s trying to get a job out of the United States. He wonders what she plans to do and who she wants to become. Her aura intrigues him to no end. He thinks he could talk to her for hours.
Realizing he hasn’t made any sort of response to her somewhat philosophical question, he nods quickly, eyes blinking rapidly, his body straightening up back to his full height. “Yeah..I mean that’s how I felt about music. Like, I always felt like I was meant for something more… Turns out I was!”
They smile together again, knowing the conversation is ending. She knows he won’t keep asking questions and she doesn’t want to keep him.
He knows he can’t completely turn himself over to this stranger, she’s obviously younger than him and even though he feels connected to her, she could surprise him still. He knows he can’t talk to her forever, the cashier glancing at the pair of them every so often since they haven’t been looking at any merchandise for a while now. He knows he shouldn’t flirt with her, ask her out for coffee or anything of the sort. He simply knows this must come to an end any moment now.
“You should definitely follow your heart,... I didn’t catch your name?” He realizes when he can’t finish his sentence by calling her name.
“Oh!” She says surprisedly, not realizing she never gave her name, “Y/N. And thank you, means a lot to hear encouragement come from someone who’s been such an inspiration to me. Honestly, thank you.”
He perks at the way she says her name, again feeling like he’s known her for much longer than these five minutes.
“It’s me who should be thanking you, Y/N. Your support is what makes my life the way it is. It means a lot to me - and you truly seem like a lovely person, genuinely.”
She throws her head back in laughter at all of the words he’s saying. The way he’s trying to convey his sincerity is earnest, but his word choice is simply funny to her. Without realizing what she’s doing, she throws out her arm and her hand lands on his bicep to steady herself while laughing - something she would do with anyone normally. He doesn’t shift from her grasp when she opens her eyes and even widens them at the sight in front of her. Her hand on Harry Styles. How is this happening? She thinks as he doesn’t disintegrate underneath her touch. He’s definitely real as she feels the coat fabric and the muscles beneath it. He smiles down at her, so sweetly that his dimples pop out. She’s in awe, but has to contain the slight sense of coolness she’d been maintaining during their conversation.
She removed her hand, gingerly, “I won’t keep you any longer, Harry.” She blushes when she says his name. “If you don’t mind, I’d love to get a picture with you, but I totally understand if you’re not okay with that. I wouldn’t post it anywhere, it’s more just for me to remember this.” She rushes the last bit, feeling nervous and shy yet again. He was so big physically, but his presence was also so strong that she felt even smaller around him.
His smile calms her immediately and this time it's his hand to touch her, his hand landing over hers that’s been resting on the counter during their conversation.
“Of course,” His lips are soft and plush as they maintain his sweet smile. “Hey Mitch!” He looks over his shoulder as he calls to Mitch who has returned from the upstairs part of the shop.
Mitch blinks at the sight of Harry with a stranger before coming over, “Yeah?”
“Do you mind taking a picture of Y/N and me?”
Y/N is still in disbelief of what is going on, completely awestruck that Harry just said her name again to Mitch Rowland. And that Mitch Rowland was even in this shop with her as well. She hadn’t realized that at first. But now she was going to be forever grateful to her father for insisting they come back to Bayeux during this trip.
Mitch nods and takes her phone once she slips it out of her pocket, fingers fidgeting to get it open quickly. Mitch smiles at her reassuringly as she lets go and moves to stand beside Harry against the counter. He pulls her into his side gently and her hand goes around his waist, feeling his warmth and substantiality for the first true time. She tries to ground herself in the moment, memorizing every detail of right now. His cologne that emanates from his neck, the way the material of his jacket feels against her bare arm, the way he puffs out a slight laugh as Mitch shifts around to get most of their bodies in the frame. Oh and the way he looks when he tilts his neck to check on her and he even risks a wink of one of his emerald eyes and she promises herself she’ll never give away any of the clothes she’s wearing right now. Her nonchalant response is to wink right back and then they both smile, turning back their attention to the phone in Mitch’s hands.
Her mom had gone up to the cashier, effectively distracting them from the photoshoot that had begun to take place. Y/N never wants Harry to let go of her, but again she knows this can’t last forever. Mitch takes a couple of photos before handing the phone back. Y/N assumes that’s it and is about to thank Harry, but he speaks over her and her words die in her throat.
“How do they look?”
“Oh?” She flips through them and Harry leans over her shoulder, respectfully. “Pretty good,” she sums up, she loves them and she’d love even more, but she’d obviously never ask Harry for that.
“Pretty good?” He echoes, unsure of her response, looking from her to the photos, “Do you want to take more?”
She thinks on his offer, already knowing the right answer, “No, no. It’s all good. Thanks.”
Then turning to face Mitch, who’s been watching the pair of them converse, “Could I actually get a photo with you, Mitch? Sorry if that’s super weird, I just think you’re really cool. I had no idea you were even here until, uh, Harry called you over.” She laughs nervously, blushing yet again.
Harry laughs under his breath at how both her and Mitch blush at her words. She’s more unsure with Mitch, which he finds interesting. She had carried their conversation easily and maintained eye contact casually, but with Mitch, it was like he was her schoolyard crush, nervous hands and fleeting glances. He wondered if she genuinely only liked Harry for his music and didn’t find him physically attractive. This nagging feeling at the back of his mind perplexed him, he twitched trying to shrug it off. Why did he care if this woman found Mitch attractive and not him?
“Yeah, of course. It’s not weird, have had plenty of people say much weirder things to me than that…” He smiles at Y/N and she mirrors his expression, but then she bites her lip. Her expression falters slightly as she processes his words. “I’m sorry if you’ve had similar experiences as Harry with so-called fans being disrespectful and inconsiderate.”
“No need to apologize, you’ve been nothing but kind and respectful,” Harry interjects
She only fidgets at his words. She’s growing slightly more nervous, being in the presence of both Mitch and Harry was starting to wear on her calm exterior. Still, Mitch trades places with Harry and Harry plucks her phone from her hands. He takes more photos than Mitch, doing close ups and full shots, causing Mitch and Y/N to laugh as they hold onto each other. He gives them little instructions on what to do in the photos and soon Y/N is rolling her eyes at Harry like she’s been best friends with him for ages. She feels like she’s just out with a couple of her friends and they decided to stop and pose for photos randomly, rather than meeting rock legends that she had only dreamt of ever seeing in real life.
When Harry is finally satisfied and comes up to the pair of them, she moves away from Mitch first, his long hair shifting as she pulls away from his side. She turns to face him immediately and starts to gush, “You’re an amazing guitarist, by the way. I forgot to say that. When I heard ‘She’ for the first time...I was blown away. The guitar on it...Feels like you’re in another universe. And it follows up ‘To Be So Lonely’ which your guitar on it is also like crazy epic. ”
Harry and Mitch laugh, but Mitch’s smile is appreciative, like he’s about to speak, but Harry speaks first, “That’s because he was in another universe. You know the story?”
She smiles and nods. Harry nods in approval. Mitch interjects, “Thank you. Also, Y/N,” he stares intently at her face and she meets his gaze this time, “You’re truly one of the kindest people - maybe the kindest - who have come up to us. And I’m not just saying that because you complimented my guitar playing.”
“He’s right,” Harry nods solemnly. Her face beams up at them both, now she really felt like this was too good to be true. Meeting her idols and having them both say very complimentary things about her, she’d cherish it forever.
“You both are amazing people and deserve to be treated as such.” Her tone is the sincerest she’s ever been, meaning every single thing she says. Then she rushes out her next few sentences, “But thank you again, seriously, you both mean a lot to me - I’ll let you get back to it...Have a nice day!”
After they say their farewells swiftly, she turns to leave and bounces over to her mother who is grinning with pride for her daughter. Before she exits completely she risks a glance over her shoulder and throws a peace sign up, Harry returns it. Then she walks out of the shop, her mother finishing up her shopping minutes ago. Mitch and Harry stay back, talking and continuing to look around the store.
Y/N tries to keep her cool until they’re out of sight of the shop. Once they round the corner and are on the next street over, she’s jumping up and down and squealing to her mom. “Can you actually believe it? What the fuck just happened? That was real right? I wasn’t hallucinating?”
Her mom laughs and reassures her it was real, “You did that, I’m so proud of you. You handled yourself very maturely”
“Well I tried! I can’t believe Mitch was there too!” She interjects, cutting off her mom, completely ecstatic from the previous experience.
“So how did the photos come out?” Her mom asks once Y/N had stopped rambling about Harry’s outfit and their matching shoes and their conversation and basically anything that had happened in the last ten minutes. They were blocks from the shop now.
“Photos?”
“Yeah, the photos you took with them. How do they look? I was ready to come over, but then that other man popped out of nowhere.”
“He’s smooth like that,” she says wistfully, her little crush on Mitch being nowhere near her love for Harry, but still present, and pats for her phone. “Oh.” She says, stopping in her tracks.
Her mother stops with her, “What?”
“I...I left my phone in the store, I guess.”
“Y/N…” Her mom drags out her name in exasperation, in awe of her daughter’s ability to be so smooth with her own idol yet how forgetful she could still be.
“Shit!” She confirms that her phone is nowhere to be found.
“Really?” Her mother sighs, hands sitting on her hips in the center of the French street.
“Sorry?” She asks sheepishly. In her starstruck stupor she had been too transfixed on Harry and Mitch and must have placed it down on the counter.
“Well, let’s go back,” her mother states, tired but also not completely mad. She lost her phone plenty of times and it was usually because of less acceptable reasons. Meeting your idols warranted a spacey head.
The door chimes as Y/N reenters the store, she walks quickly to wear she had her conversation with Harry almost twenty minutes ago and her mom goes to ask the clerk if they had grabbed it. It’s not on the counter where they had been leaning. She glances around checking to see if it had fallen on the ground or if by some grand luck Harry and Mitch were still there. Due to her luck, neither of these hopes came true. Her mom joins her in the area and shakes her head, the clerk hadn’t gotten any phones turned in since they had left the first time.
“Give me your phone,” Y/N says suddenly. “Find my iphone,” she explains when her mom looks at her questioningly. Checking the phone, she sighs in exasperation, silently cursing herself for not sharing her location with her mom when her phone icon says ‘location unavailable’. She rubs a hand over her face in disappointment.
“Don’t click the sound button!” Her mom says quickly, “If someone stole it, they’ll turn it off when they hear it.”
“But how am I supposed to find it? It could be here and I just can’t see it.” Her finger hovers over the ‘play sound’ button, hesitant, but desperate. She had met and gotten photos with Harry Styles and they were already gone - oh and she’d have to replace her phone, which would be terrible, as well.
“Maybe Harry Styles has it?”
“Mom, don’t be dumb.”
“Hey! Watch your tone. I’m serious. Did he ever hand it back to you after he took those second round of pictures?”
Y/N scratches her head nervously and hands back her mom’s phone. She places both over her face and presses her fingers harshly over her eyes trying to think. She hadn’t been paying attention to her phone at the time, too busy trying to commit everything about Harry to memory in her mind so that she’d never forget it. She was sure she’d never forget today, now, even if she ever stopped loving Harry, which she was doubtful of. Hey kids, I met a rockstar and I was so starstruck I lost my phone in France! She groaned. “Oh my fucking god!”
After a few deep breaths with her fingers pinching the bridge of her nose, she composed herself, “We need to play the sound. Either it’s here and we’ll find it. Or - worst case scenario - it sounds and Harry Styles realizes he has my phone and we go from there… Well, I guess in the worst case scenario some jerk stole it and they turn it off and sell it for parts, but I just don’t think that’s what happened.” She bites her lip and stares at her mom, who hesitantly raises her finger to press the button that sets off the alarm on the lost phone. She clicks it after an overly dramatic pause. Y/N prays to anyone who’s willing to listen, she says in her mind, please sound the phone in here. Life would be so much simpler if it worked out the way we wanted. But, in place of the annoying echoing ring of the Find My iPhone tone there is only silence. At least there’s silence in the little shop in Bayeux.
-
In a tiny taxi cab that was headed to a small chateau outside of the town of Bayeux, the phone sounds and causes Harry to furrow his brows. He was sure he had his phone on ‘do not disturb’, but he pulls it out anyway to see why it’s making this annoying sound. What he pulls out of his coat pocket is not his phone he realizes immediately.
“Shit,” he says under his breath, still loud enough for Mitch to look over from the opposite passenger seat.
“What?”
“This isn’t my phone.”
“What?”
Harry rolls his eyes at Mitch’s repeated question and opens up his purse digging out his actual phone and holds up his and the one he had apparently stolen.
“Oh, yeah, that’s not your phone. That’s not good.”
Harry huffs as he turns the unknown phone over in his hand, the screen was a scene of a city he didn’t actually recognize - San Francisco maybe - the lavender silicone case is smooth in his hand and he notices a little sticker, it’s of Y/N and two other women. His eyes widen at it and it makes a little more sense to him. He hadn’t really stolen a phone, he just forgot to give it back. It wasn’t much better, but it was how he was going to comfort himself. Dropping his own phone in his lap, he runs his hand through his hair, rings slightly tugging at his mused curls. Then he turns the sticker to show Mitch, “It’s that girl we met, it’s her phone.”
“You stole her phone,” Mitch states. Voice deadpan and eyes boring into Harry’s.
“No!” Harry defends, but quickly slumps, “I mean, technically? Yes...But-” Mitch’s laughter cuts him off. “You’re an idiot, Harry, y’know that?”
-
“I feel like I’m on punk’d right now…” Y/N grumbles as it becomes clear that the phone is not in this shop. “If this is punk’d, at least my phone’s not actually gone,” she says to no one really. Her mom is pacing the store and stops to look at her daughter, “This is most definitely not punk’d for so many reasons, dear. Mainly because the show got canceled but also because we are in Bayeux, France not Malibu.”
“Fuck…”
She walks out of the shop, barely paying a glance to the shop keeper this time, her usual kind demeanor nowhere to be found under the piles of distress and anxiety plaguing her body.
Back out on the street she looks around, again hoping that with any luck Harry is still around and will come running up to her to give her back her phone. Again, no such luck.
“What the fuck am I going to do?” She looks to her mom helplessly, her arms flapping by her sides, defeated.
-
“What the fuck am I going to do?” Harry asks as they get out of the taxi, glancing at the purple phone in his hand.
Mitch shrugs, “Hope she has her location on?”
“Then she’s going to come here...But wouldn’t she have tried to track it first instead of playing the sound?”
“Dude, I don’t know. You can try to unlock it and find her mom’s number, get in contact with them.” Mitch sighs as they walk through the front door. “Or we can go back to town, see if they’re still there? Did you get her last name? You could find her on social media maybe?”
“I feel terrible...She was so nice.” Harry throws his bags down on the entryway couch and begins to pace, Y/N’s phone never leaving his hand. “Could go back into town tomorrow, maybe we’ll run into each other again.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Mitch sits and runs a hand through his hair, “Just calm down, right now, Harry. There’s not much else you can do.”
He’s right and Harry tries to not fixate on the phone, but he fiddles with it for the rest of the day. He doesn’t let it leave his sight and sets it beside his bed when he gets ready to go to sleep. As he shifts in the bed, unable to fall asleep he takes the phone and begins trying to unlock it, guessing random numbers and failing miserably. Eventually, he decides he should go to bed and drifts off into an uncomfortable sleep.
-
After being unsuccessful in town, Y/N and her mom went back to the little villa they were staying at on the outskirts of Bayeux. It was located next to some vineyards that the villa co-owned with the private chateau that sat on the other side of the vines. It was beautiful and she had been so excited to be staying there. But after the events of today, she was not in the mood to join the rest of her family for dinner among the grapes. She lays on her bed, staring at the ceiling, wondering how she had been so stupid to forget to ask for her phone back.
In the middle of the night, she wakes up in a cold sweat. She’s still in the clothes she had worn out and was laying on top of her covers at the end of her bed. All the windows of the room were closed and her shades weren’t drawn. Groggily, she rose from her uncomfortable position and changed. Moving to the window to let some air in she sees the lights flickering in a room of the private chateau across the way. She wondered why someone would willingly be up at this hour, even though she was unsure exactly what time it was without her phone. Her phone. That’s what had woken her up. She had dreamt that her mom had called her phone and the frog from the Frog and the Toad stories had picked it up. That was ridiculous, of course, but the idea to call her phone instead of just pinging it was solid. If Harry still had it, then he could pick up and they could figure out how to meet up. She decided she’d have to do that at a reasonable hour, however and moved on, opening her windows and closing the sheer shades, before getting under her covers to sleep.
-
Y/N wakes up early the next morning. Her sleep a restless one. Padding down the hall to her parent’s room, she knocks solemnly. She was far from a morning person and it was much to her mother’s surprise to see her standing in the hallway when she opened the door.
“Hey..” her voice catches in her throat, scratchy from lack of use in the night.
“Good morning, sunshine,” her mother laughs slightly, but Y/N only gives her an unamused look and walks into her room immediately searching for her mom’s phone.
“Need to use your phone, gonna call my phone,” she mutters, none of her thoughts being coherent sentences.
“Y/N, it’s 7 am. You’re going to call Harry Styles at 7 am? With your morning voice?”
Her eyes narrow and her lips form a straight line one her face, clearly not amused by her mother’s questions. Even if she knew her mom was right. She clears her throat and rolls her eyes at her mom, who is moving around the room beginning to get ready for the day as her daughter sits on the rumpled bed. Y/N’s father had already gone out to breakfast in the main area of the villa.
“Fine,” she slides off the bed when she realizes her mom isn’t offering her any more words of wisdom. “I’ll get ready for the day and then I will call my phone.”
Pattering back to her room, she slowly begins to dress and liven herself up for the day. Her hands instinctively reach out to her bedside table to pick up her phone to turn some music on, but of course she’s greeted with nothing. She groans loudly, “Of. Fucking. Course.” Shaking her head, she moves to take fresh clothes out of her suitcase.
Exiting her room again, this time far more awake, she walks down the hallway in a babydoll style top that read “Don’t play with my heart” with little girls playing racquetball with a red heart emblazoned over her chest and white jean floods. Her feet were covered in red high top converse today, matching the color of the small heart on her shirt. She liked the contrast of the white pants and the bright red of the shoes and she smiled to herself as she walked confidently into the breakfast area.
Her entire family was sitting around one of the tables, sipping coffee and eating pastries, it was now around 8:45 - a slightly more acceptable part of the day. They were all early risers, especially in comparison to her, and her older sister looks at her curiously. “What are you doing up so early, kid?” Y/N leans down to grab a slice of a peach from her brother’s place, which earns her a slight yelp of protest. She rolls her eyes at her sister and stalks off to the buffet, knowing she’s made her presence known enough.
“Can I borrow your phone now?” Y/N says after finishing a small danish and the lukewarm coffee that was at their table when she arrived. Her mother finally nods and hands it over. As Y/N grabs it, she’s already halfway out the doors that lead into the backyard of the villa.
She stands on the grass that goes for a few feet before a hedge that separates the villa ground with the vineyard. Flipping through the contacts, she settles on hers and sighs, trying to calm her nerves. Her free hand ghosts over her hair and she uses one foot to step lightly on the heel of the other shoe. Please pick up, she sends out a prayer once again. Her last twenty-four hours seemed to consist of dreams, hopes, and prayers and she was starting to realize that she didn’t particularly like any of them. Biting her lip, she raises her phone up to her ear and gets her automatic voice message. Realizing she has her phone on ‘do not disturb’, she immediately rings herself again, knowing that it will go through this time.
-
Harry strolls out of his bathroom and widens his eyes when he hears a buzzing hear his bed. Seeing it’s Y/N’s phone he grabs it quickly and furrows his brow at the contact. Her mother’s name, but he doesn’t know that. To him it’s just a person’s name, it could be anyone she knew. Still, he thought about the odds of it being just one of her friends or her calling from someone else’s phone and decided to risk it.
“Hello?”
“Thank fucking God!” is all he hears and he’s pretty sure it’s Y/N’s voice.
“Y/N?” He laughs and takes a seat on his bed, staring out his window that opened to the vineyard.
“Yes! Harry? Hi!” She’s ecstatic that anyone picked up at all, bouncing up and down on the other side of the phone. She mutters to herself, once again, “Thank fucking God.”
“Who’s phone are you calling from?”
“Oh, my mom’s,” she says, calming down slightly as she begins to walk around the grass, unable to contain the renewed sense of energy she has.
“You don’t keep her in your contacts as ‘mum’? I almost didn’t pick up.” He tilts his head, trying to think of anyone else he knew who kept their mother’s contact as the actual name rather than ‘mum’ or some other variant of it.
“Well, thanks for picking up,” she laughs at his words, bringing her pacing to a stop to stare at the chateau across the way. “It’s really not that weird,” she insists, her arm going to cradle the elbow of the arm that holds the phone to her ear. “I don’t think any of my siblings have her as ‘mom’ in their contacts.”
“I think it’s a little weird. I’m going to have to start asking people what they’ve got their mum down as in their phones. You’ve got me intrigued,” he muses, only slightly teasing. A smile curves onto his face as he hears her huff over the phone, obviously not liking his ribbing.
“So...you have my phone,” she changes the subject.
“Yes…” he scratches his head and she swears she could hear him awkwardly rubbing at his hair. “Sorry ‘bout that. Guess I forgot to give it back.”
“Not entirely your fault, I probably should have asked for it back. It was like twenty minutes before I even realized I didn’t have it and that was only really thanks to my mom.” She tries to not make him feel bad, because she honestly felt responsible for the mess up.
“Yeah, but I probably wouldn’t’ve realized till I got back to my place and pulled out one phone from my pocket and another one from my bag if you hadn’t tried the ‘find my iphone’ thing.”
“Oh my god, was it loud!? Did you have a hard time shutting it off?” She rushes as all the possible ways she might have annoyed Harry yesterday run through her mind.
“No, no, it was fine,” he reassures her, laughing lightly, standing up now and beginning to pace in front of his window. “Felt like a proper dick, though. Never in my life have I forgotten to give someone their phone back.” He sighs and stops in front of the window, deciding to open it for some fresh air.
Her gaze flits to a movement on the second floor of the chateau, someone opening up their window apparently. The long paned windows flip open and the little sheer curtains flutter in the slight morning breeze.
“So are you still in Bayeux?” Harry asks, hoping her answer is ‘yes’ as he takes in a deep breath of the air from outside.
“Yeah. Are you still here?” She asks timidly, moving her gaze down to her shoes bright red sticking out of the green grass. “Because that will make getting my phone back much easier,” she adds, clarifying that it’s not supposed to be a personal question, just simply a logistical one. Even if her heart skips a beat at the thought of seeing Harry again.
“Yes, I am. Well...just outside the town actually.”
“You don’t say? I’m staying just outside of town, too. At a little villa located next to a vineyard,” She looks around her surroundings again, walking the length of the garden once more. A movement from the same room that had opened their windows at the chateau catching her eye once again. A man, with his arm placed on the sill, leaning out slightly.
“You’re not wearing red shoes by any chance?” He smiles and she can hear the way it affects his words. Looking out of the window, he eyes the villa and the person who was pacing around its patio, seemingly on the phone.
Her brows raise and she stops in her tracks. “Did you just open your window?”
The only response from Harry that she hears is a soft chuckle. But, more importantly, the man in the chateau is waving to her. She grins and waves her free hand over her head, doing a slight jump to make sure he sees her. His laughter only grows, crackling slightly over the telephone line.
“What are the odds?” She breathes out after a moment. Her waving hand fell to her side and she looked at the figure in the window. It wasn’t exactly clear to her that it was Harry, but the way the man was hunched was enough to convince her. She vaguely sees him shake his head in agreement at the serendipitous nature of their current situation.
“Have you had a chance to dine in the vineyard yet?” Harry bites his lip after he asks the question, feeling a little more confident in his flirtation over the phone.
“I have - only once for dinner. Last night I was so stressed I couldn’t eat.”
“What do you think about lunch in the vineyard?” He’s smiling now, the charm dripping in every word he says. His accent is music to her ears and she thinks how could she ever say no to that offer.
“I don’t know...lunch with my phone thief?” She imitates an unsure tone. Her tease is lighthearted and Harry huffs, playfully indignant.
“As an apology for keeping your phone by mistake,” he adds, emphasizing the ‘by mistake’ part.
“As long as I can get my phone back, I’m up for anything you want,”  She laughs, but then blushes at the innuendo that could be found in her words. Harry hears it and an amused look spreads across his face, the definition of anything running through his mind as well as his assured belief that Y/N did not mean what she had just implied. “I mean! Not anything, I just...Lunch in the vineyard would be lovely, Harry.” She sighs, a hand trailing down her face at her complete foolishness.
“Great. How does one o’clock sound?” He moves on from her slip, not wanting to embarrass her anymore. Especially when he was the one to cause this entire situation.
“Sounds smashing, Mr. Thief,” She breathes out, but laughs when she hears Harry groan.
“You’re something else, missy.”
“I know.” She rolls her eyes, trying to contain her giggles at their playful back and forth.
“See you at one.” He says finally.
“See you at one.” She echoes, continuing to watch him in the window. Neither of them seem to move to hang up. She’s stood in place and so is he, his head hanging out of the window now, resting himself on his arm. It’s just their breathing exchanging over the line and some gusts of wind crackling the connection every so often.
“Are you going to hang up?” She whispers, after a minute of complete silence, her voice coming out impossibly small.
“Thought you would’ve by now.”
“I don’t know why I can’t.” She admits, but she just feels weird hanging up on him even if they have plans to see each other later.
“Me neither.” His response causes her to tilt her head in confusion. Why would he have trouble hanging up on her?
“Okay.”
Then, it’s quiet again. Both of them shifting their bodies around, yet still managing to stay on the line. Y/N is the one who hangs up the phone after hearing Harry’s breath shake slightly, like he’s steeling himself to actually hang up. She realizes that while she doesn’t want to hang up on him, she’d rather do it than have him hang up on her. If that made any sense. She wasn’t sure, but the way he had invited her to lunch, it just felt like he had shifted their relationship from fan and star to something else. Something she didn’t fully grasp, but whatever it was made her stomach flip.
-
She informed her family that she wouldn’t be going out with them today and that she was getting her phone back, but not that she would be having lunch with Harry. She had no idea what they would think about it, but she didn’t want to give them the chance to inform her.
Walking through the vineyards, she watches the slight dust from the dirt gather on her shoes, the red converse. She had settled on what she had been wearing originally after changing her outfit upwards of twenty times. Best to be casual, she thought, like it was no big deal that she was about to dine with a musician whom she loved.
There was only one table on this side of the vineyard, it was the part owned by the chateau, a couple rows from where the villa had their tables. The simple cream tablecloth laid across the wooden table that had two matching wooden chairs with cream cushions placed around it. On top of the table was a picnic basket and a bottle of red wine, made from the grapes in the vineyard. And in one of the chairs sat Harry. Big square green glasses perched on his nose as he looked up at the sky. Y/N takes in his appearance, his cream shirt with stitched patterns on it, half unbuttoned to grant a full view of his swallows and butterfly as well as baggy light wash ripped jeans and dirty white vans. His shirt almost matches the tablecloth, but she’s not sure if he would take that as a compliment.
He hadn’t noticed her presence and he rubs his lips together, smoothing the lip balm he had applied before settling outside.
“Mr. thief?” She touches lightly on his shoulder, similar to how she had done yesterday. His head shoots up and he readjusts in his chair, to sit up slightly more upright. A smile curves onto his face and he moves his glasses up into his hair, pushing his curls back behind them.
“Y/N,” he drags out her name, toying with the sound of it. His eyes flit over her figure, taking in her outfit but quickly run back to her beautiful face. He motions for her to take a seat and she complies.
“The red shoes,” he smiles, glancing at her shoes. She laughs and does a little click of her heels.
“Can’t believe my phone was less than a mile away from me last night.”
“Oh! Your phone!” Harry’s eyes widened, “I forgot it in my room!”
Y/N laughs, her smile spreading on her face immediately, but her face falls when she sees Harry isn’t laughing. “You can’t be serious.” Harry says nothing, a blush creeping up his neck. “Harry…” she doesn’t know what else to say, scratching at the back of her head. “I guess stars really are just like us, complete space cadets.”
“I’m sorry! I was..distracted.”
She can’t keep herself from laughing and she places her hand over Harry’s on the table, trying to calm him down. “No worries, seriously, I was just teasing you. I’ve gone this long without my phone, an hour or so more won’t kill me.”
He smiles sheepishly, mentally kicking himself for how foolish he had made himself look. “Sorry ‘bout that. Seems like I’m really trying to keep your phone, doesn’t it?”
“Kind of...but I don’t think there’s anything in particular on there that you’d really be interested in having access to.”
He grabs the bottle of wine and takes the temporary cork off, he had previously uncorked it before Y/N had arrived. He pours the wine and then quirks a brow towards her. “I’m sure you’ve got some funny notes on there, you’re hilarious.”
She scoffs as his look is serious. Picking her glass up, she clinks it with Harry’s and takes a sip. She hums at the taste, judging the flavor and deeming it good. He watches her as she makes her silent decision and smirks at the way she smiles to herself. Coming back to the conversation she makes eye contact with Harry as she sets the glass down and leans back in her chair.
“You barely know me.” A coy smile flits across her features now. Harry’s heart skips a beat at her tone. He had been expecting some lighthearted quip, but this held something far more intense. It’s still teasing, but it’s far closer to flirting than friendly joking.
He begins to unpack the basket and place food onto the table, eyes constantly flickering between his task and Y/N. Her eyes are fixated on his hands, the way they flex and move and the way his rinks clink against the containers he’s moving around.
“Then tell me about yourself.”
“What do you want to know?”
“Anything.” He finishes placing the food on the table and removes the basket from the table so there’s nothing obstructing their view of each other.
“Very specific,” she takes a sip of her wine again, refraining from rolling her eyes. It was easy to talk to Harry, like they had been friends forever.
Harry lets out one of his loud single laughs. “See! You’re hilarious.” His compliment makes her finally roll her eyes playfully. Instead of responding, she puts some food onto the plate in front of her and takes a bite of a peach slide she had grabbed.
“You’re a flirt,” she says finally, her smile spreading across her face.
“That’s a fact ‘bout me not you, love.”
She bites her lip. For being extremely forgetful, Harry was also extremely charming. “Well, I’m not a fan of flirts.”
“I thought you said you were a massive fan yesterday?” He tilts his head to the side and looks at her with an inviting look in his eye, obviously trying to goad her.
She let out a gasp at his words and began to blush. His stare felt like a second sun boring straight into her, its heat traveling directly to her core. Trying to maintain her collected appearance that she had played so well yesterday, she takes a breath and another sip of wine. The liquid ran down her throat, soothing her. Shaking her head she says, “You know what I meant.”
Biting a piece of bread, Harry nods and shoots her a wink. Her legs instinctively shift together. Finishing his chewing, he speaks up, “Okay, but seriously, tell me more about yourself.”
They settle in, getting more serious and having an actual conversation rather than flirty comments shot back and forth. By the end of the bottle of wine, Harry and Y/N are cackling about some story she’s told about her first solo trip to Amsterdam and all the trouble she got into being a twenty year old college student with easy legal access to weed.
“I remember the first time I went to Amsterdam with the band,” Harry easily segways into his own story and she perks at the words ‘the band’. After all the fun they had been having talking and getting to know each other, the idea that Harry was a famous musician had left her mind completely. For the last forty-five minutes he had just been a really nice guy who was treating her to lunch.
She looks at him expectantly. “It was crazy cool, I think I was only seventeen then? But everyone else was over 18 so they bought us a bunch of pot and we smoked it and got high off our asses. Can barely remember what we talked about, but we definitely thought it was the smartest shit ever”
“Do you ever miss that?”
He finishes off his last bit of wine, “Being young and dumb?”
“No, the, like, relationship you had with them. I don’t mean to pry, but I feel like with any close relationship, when you stop being together all the time...it’s never the same.”
Harry sighs, thinking over what you had said, now knowing it was rather serious and not just about being young. He runs a hand through his soft curls before starting his response. “Short answer is yes. But, y’know, they were my family for so long and that bond doesn’t go away, even if we go through rough patches. Like that part of my life is such an essential part of who I am, I could never throw it away or discount it. I don’t know if I miss it all of the time though. I really like who I am right now.”
She nods, finishing her wine now too. Her body is fuzzy and warm under the soft light of the afternoon. Sharing a bottle of wine was enough to make her tipsy, but she felt sober enough to carry on their serious conversation. “That’s good. It’s important to like who you are right now. It’s how you know you’re ready to be there for others.” She says thoughtfully and then adds, “I like who I am right now, too.”
Harry smiles at her, a calm expression maintaining on his face, and twists his rings on his fingers. “That’s good,” he echoes. “Do you want to go for a walk?” His voice is soft and of course she’s going to say yes.
Her response is to stand up from the table and begin putting things back into the picnic basket. Harry watches her for a moment, taking in the way she moves with so much elegance even when doing such a mundane task. He is honestly so happy that he had gotten to see her again. She had intrigued him yesterday, but he had just expected her to be one of those fleeting thoughts in his mind. Now he wasn’t so sure. He had a feeling she would live in his memory for far longer. “You don’t have to do that. I’ll come back later and grab it all.”
“You set this all up, the least I can do is clean up a little,” She looks up at him from her crouched position as she packs up the leftover food into the basket still on the ground. Her hair is slightly falling into her face and she reaches to push it behind her ear while they continue to look at one another. Harry takes his lower lip into his mouth as he continues to look at her, trying to convince himself she’s not the most beautiful woman he’s ever met.
As they walk between the grapes, they continue to talk, further investigating Y/N’s job aspirations and what Harry was planning on for his next few weeks of vacation. He leads them down a dirt path after they cross the street, moving away from both the villa and the chateau. The path has tall grass flanking its sides that pushes around in the cool summer breeze. She mentions the beautiful sound of the birds chirping and Harry agrees. They walk until they reach the small lake that’s about a ten minute walk from their respective current residences. It’s not a lake for swimming so there’s no one around, just more tall grass, some small trees, and the animals.
“It’s really so beautiful here.”
“I love it a lot, I’ve been coming down here every evening and just sitting alone for an hour or so,” Harry motions to the little wooden bench located beneath a shady tree. She looks at him questioningly, unsure if he means for them to sit. He takes her hand in response and leads them over to it. It’s right before the edge of the pond and if their legs were just a bit longer they could touch the feet into the water.
“It’s nice,” She says, turning her attention from the scenery to stare at Harry, who she finds is already looking at her. Their eyes meet and she bites her lip. He’s so close to her. Closer than they were in the shop yesterday and now their faces are on the same level. His glasses are still pushed into his curls and she decides to pluck them from his head and place them over her eyes instead. Harry protests, but she says smugly, “I’m putting them to better use than just sitting a top that head of yours. It’s quite bright out.”
Harry leans into her, extending his arm behind her and resting it on the back of the bench. She sighs peacefully, with her gaze now hidden behind the glasses. She returns her gaze out against the water and tries to shift closer to Harry casually. They stay silent, listening to the rest of the world moving around them. Soon she’s resting nestled into his side and his arm has moved from the bench to rest around her shoulders. She exhales in contentment, but neither of them have said anything for a while. They were okay with it, being held was enough. Her right hand goes up and threads with Harry’s that is hanging limply against her.
After a few more minutes of silence, Harry decides he wants to talk. “I like being around you.”
“I like being around you too, Harry. You’re different than I had expected.”
“Really?”
“Yeah..I mean there’s that sinister quote about how you should never meet your heroes. But still, you were even kinder than I expected and even though you stole my phone,” she pauses to laugh,”it kind of turned out to be a blessing in disguise because I got to see you again.”
“Thanks…” Harry sighs and she turns her face to gaze up at him. “Well, yeah, now I’m sorta glad I did take your phone. You’re really wonderful.” She smiles and he smiles just as wide.
But then her smile falters, suddenly remembering everything. It was like a self-fulfilling prophecy, she mentioned that thing about heroes and it all came crashing down around her. Yes, it was amazing to be around Harry and it was great that he had been so down to earth. But what she had just said was true too. He was her hero, he was famous and their lives didn’t connect at all. Just that one fleeting moment in the shop. If she hadn’t known him they would have never interacted. She had even been on her last legs of being in that store, she was just about to ask her mom to leave when Harry had walked through the door.
She sits up and drops her hand from his and he looks at her confused. “Did I say something wrong?” He asks, concerned. She stands up now and walks the short distance to the edge of the water, pushing his glasses on top of her head. He follows quickly, growing anxious as she stays silent. “I just..” she laughs in spite of herself, “I just feel really dumb right now.”
“What? Why?” Harry’s really confused now, she won’t meet his gaze as he faces her trying to figure out what just happened.
“I can’t believe I fooled myself into thinking for even a second this could ever be something more.” She turns to Harry finally, looking him directly in the eye, even though her eyes are prickling with tears. She’s angry with herself, not Harry. “You’re you and I’m just a fan at the end of the day. All of the flirting and touching, it can’t be anything more. At most, I’m a one night stand. And as great as that would be in the moment, I know how I feel about you and I know it would ruin me. I can’t be a fling for you, Harry. I’m sorry.”
“Hey,” he grabs her arm, trying to comfort her, she shrugs him off. “You’re more than a fan to me, I thought that was obvious by now. You wouldn’t be some meaningless one night stand. When I say I like being around you, I mean I like you, Y/N.” His voice is strong yet soft. He needs to convince her that she can feel comfortable around him, but he sees the darkness in her eyes, how scared she is of being hurt.
“I don’t fit into your life, Harry.” She shakes her head, moving her hands more as she grows more anxious.
“That’s not true. You told me you want to move to England, we could see each other there and see if this was anything.”
She knows he’s right, that it was possible, but she had worked herself up so much now that she had a hard time believing it. She takes a deep breath, “Just answer me this. Would you have given me a second glance if I hadn’t come up to you in that shop yesterday? Or a second thought if there hadn’t been the phone mishap?”
Harry is taken aback. Her words had nothing to do with what he had just said. He had thought his solution was actually really great, a plan he had been meaning to tell her if the rest of the day had gone accordingly, which it didn’t seem to be doing. He pauses and if Y/N was anymore distraught that would have been her cue to leave. Thankfully, she had grounded herself enough in the situation to not let her hot head get in the way of this conversation.
“That’s a pretty unfair question, Y/N. It’s not like I’m constantly looking for someone to fancy.”
“Just answer the questions.”
“Probably not, about the first one, I hadn’t even noticed anyone in the shop before you came up to me. I was off in my own world.” She nods, taking his words into account. He continues, “But yes, about the second one, I thought about you in the car ride home before your phone even rang. Like I said, I like you.”
“Okay.” She softens.
“That’s it?”
“I mean you’re right. We could see each other in London and see if this is something. I just had to know about the other stuff, it was racing through my mind and I wouldn’t get over it unless you gave me an answer.”
“Oh, so can I kiss you?” His words broke the uncomfortable tension that had surrounded them.
“You still want to?” Her voice is small and unsure. The most nervous she had been around Harry was right now.
“I want to do so much more than that, darling, you have no idea.” He cups her cheek and wraps an arm around her waist. She giggles in nervous anticipation. Then his lips gently push onto hers and she sighs into the kiss. At the edge of the lake, the pair of them taste each other for the first time. Tongues begin licking into each other’s mouths and the kiss becomes breathless. Her hands are at the base of his neck, tugging him closer to her while he tightens his grasp around her waist. She moans slightly when Harry nips at her lower lip and he smirks, happy with the sound she makes.
“We should probably go get my phone.” Harry whimpers at her words.
“What?” Harry is once again confused by the woman before him, who had now pulled from their kiss.
“My phone is in your room…” She trails off and then eyes widen and he giggles excitedly. Eventually realizing what she’s implying.
“Yes! Yes, we should go do that. Get your phone. In my room. Sounds like a good idea. Mhmm.” He pecks her lips between each sentence.
“You’re so weird,” she laughs and brings down his shades onto her face once again. He pulls her into his side and kisses the top of her head as they begin their walk back to the chateau.
“Do you want your phone or not?”

HAPPY 9TH BIRTHDAY, BARRY! REFLECTIONS & MOVING FORWARD
Tumblr media
Well, it’s here again! Way back in 2013, sometime in the first week of June, I submitted an application for this Barry blog to be accepted into an RP group...and I haven’t looked back since. I had always liked writing and Pokemon, and this blog was my real introduction to RP and Tumblr as a whole. And even though my muses, writing buddies, and scenes have changed so much over the years, I always find myself returning to this blog. Barry’s my creative north star, and--when I have the chance--it’s still so fun to write him.
Now, some of you might say: but you’ve barely written on him lately! and you would be absolutely right, not only on this blog but on my other Tumblr blogs as well. To be honest, I feel like my writing mindset here has been in a weird (not negative) space recently. I try not to post too much ooc--and almost never any negative ooc (because I feel people have enough on their plates and should spend mental energy worrying about me, I’m fine)--but I thought I would take this posting space, this blog’s anniversary, to provide a bit of an in-depth update and try to talk through my latest thoughts. As a treat.
This blog isn’t going anywhere and I am feeling great lately. Barry’s still the man. And I know how self-indulgent this is all sounding so far, so I’m going to stick the rest of my ramblings under the cut. Please note that I’m going to be mentioning hospitals (I work in one) and other real-world stuff under there, so if that’s not your cup of tea, I completely get it! And I really really do appreciate anybody who has stuck with me through this lil’ period of inactivity. Thanks. 😊
One year ago, my life was a grind. I was finishing up my master’s degree, working check-ins and staff management in a new hospital job during the height of the pandemic, and--because I couldn’t really go outside--I starting turning towards RP as an escape, a break from the chaos. I was already writing my thesis every day, so the words came easy...and RPing became a bigger part of my life, which I feel is both good and bad (I’ll speak to that in a bit.)
It was unhealthy, but I have always thrived under that pressure--pushing my own needs aside to get the job done, academics or elsewhere. If I don’t have that pressure, that chip on my shoulder, I need to replace it with another goal. I always need to be working towards something--like Barry, it’s hard for me to sit still. I’ve powered my way through a lot of obstacles that way, but that competitive mindset’s a double-edged sword.
So, when I earned my master’s at the beginning of 2022 and that pressure was finally lifted off, I doubled down on my hospital job because of staff shortages. I didn’t relax. The winter weather was awful, I wasn’t writing as much anymore, and I was convincing myself that I wasn’t burning out. I would come home, stuck inside, nap, and then escape with a bit of RP. It wasn’t sustainable.
That all came to a head around a couple months ago. While I was working, a visitor became furious when I asked them to put on their mask properly. They called me an anti-Asian slur and spat in my face. Family members were going through their own COVID scares at that time, my flight to my friend’s wedding had just gotten moved (again, thanks Delta), and I just felt numb for the rest of my shift. I remember a nurse taking me aside and demanding that I take some time off for myself. A week later, at the wedding, my friends (bless them) also had an intervention and told me the same thing: I looked exhausted.
So, when I came back, I took some time to reflect on how I was treating myself. I looked at RPing and wondered why I was finding it so hard to write lately. Years ago, when I was in a closed group setting with Barry, the circle had some pretty strict rules: no one-liners, no OOC spam, and focus on IC writing. I want to be clear: these rules were overly strict for many people and I absolutely am not trying to say that people shouldn’t post what they want here at all--go off. For me, even after going indie, I’ve personally always trended towards longform IC content and character studies/hcs/drabbles. And it still feels weird for me to make more than a couple posts a day. I fear dash cluttering.
After my lil’ break away and return, I’ve lately found myself overwhelmed by the sheer amount of content and posts on dash (esp. dashcomms and ooc), and I realize that that’s on me. It would be easy for me to wax poetic about the good ol’ days but it’s absolutely not true--I think indie has always been refreshingly chaotic ever since I really got into it--I just follow way more people now. Whenever I log on, it feels like the dash is in the midst of a dashcomm, inside joke or collective vent/rant that changes at such a quick pace. And again--this is NOT a knock on what people are posting--I’m just happy to be here, I like following new people and reading about new muses--I’m just personally having some difficulty keeping track of everything as of late. (Fun fact: For everybody saying curate your space, the only anon hate I have ever received on this blog came after I did a little round of non-ill willed softblocking on this account. If you’re reading this, come talk to me--I didn’t mean any misunderstanding! An unfollow doesn’t mean dislike, just that we never interacted, and I’m absolutely down for refollows.)
All of this to say: I feel like you get out of RP what you put into it, as with most things. For me, I haven’t had time to contribute much writing lately due to summer + responsibilities, so the creative motivation to be here is down right now, but I’m realizing that it’s okay. I don’t need to post every day, I can write novels & hcs for fun when I’m in the right mind to do so. In the scramble to be present and fight against FOMO here, I think I forgot about that.
When I was writing up my post here, I took a look through this blog’s history to read through some old posts. I thought about how many people Barry’s interacted with--people with deleted blogs, people with long inactive statuses, people who are still here. I think there’s this fear (at least that I’ve felt for myself since writing here) of being forgotten--the internet moves fast. This can extend to real life, too--I’m now more comfortable with the grind of my hospital job and I love helping people, but there are some days where I feel like my efforts just don’t matter or make a difference. In those moments where I feel overwhelmed/invisible, I’m learning to step back, take a deep breath and focus on the positives.
For RP, I’m glad that I found and stuck with this place. I always think about how lucky it is that I get to talk, read, and write Pokemon and muses with people from all over the world--how a game and a platform can bring everyone together. I’m grateful for everybody who’s followed me at some point along my writing journey, and I’m also grateful for all the talented writers, artists, and creators that I follow (or have yet to follow!) in turn. For everyone keeping up with Clair, Jupiter, and especially with my boy Barry, I--as always--apologize for the sudden disappearances and my Magcargo-esque pace, but I hope my writing has brightened your day even a bit at some point. That’d be enough for me.
Now that I’ve reached the end of this messy ramble, I’m hesitant to post it, may delete it later, but it feels so good to write everything out, to get everything off my chest just this once. If you’ve made it here, thanks for reading. It’s been a great nine years on this blog so far, and--while I might be taking things at a slower pace moving forward--I’m not stopping just yet. Sinnoh strong. 😤

Notes: Sorry for taking so long! And for my spelling and grammatical mistakes, English is not my native language, I am learning.
Tumblr media
There had been so many times when you had imagined yourself growing old with him in that house that you didn't know how to deal with the situation right now. You were in Massachusetts, inside your car, standing in front of his house, without any warning and without knowing how he would react when he saw you after so many months.
You and Chris had a history, a short but passionate history that lasted two and a half years as an established couple and one year with comings and goings. The reason for the break-up was not the end of the love, but the time. The time you spent apart was longer than the time you spent together, your work was not very compatible with his, and although you both did your best to overcome it, it was not enough. Even so, after the friendly break-up the relationship didn't end completely, let's say it never had a point and end, becoming friends with benefits, and it was something that didn't seem to matter to you. However, there was a conversation going on between you, and although neither of you named it, that conversation was present. Every time you coincided for a short period of days everything happened except that conversation, and without it neither of you could evolve, neither of you could have freedom. You felt that you were still bound, and you both knew it.
The global pandemic did not benefit your situation, while he stayed in Boston with his family, you flew home. At first everyone thought that the situation would be resolved in a couple of months at most, but as time went on the problem became bigger. The months passed, the pandemic became uncontrollable and everyone stopped their lives. Your contact with Chris was not lost, but it weakened, there were too many things to think about and the constant fear that something might happen to a loved one made you anxious, and your priorities were elsewhere.
As time went by you discovered to value the little things in life, perhaps because of the pandemic. You realized what really mattered, what made you happy and what you were willing to fight for in your day-to-day life. Chris was one of those things. Your life with him was not perfect, like nothing else in this life, but the positives outweighed the negatives. Confinement allowed you to meditate, to consider how you wanted your future to be and to discover that the important thing was to live in the moment, because you never know what is going to happen. It was clear that during the pandemic you couldn't fight for what you wanted, nor take a plane and fly to where he was, but things would slowly come back to normal, and it would be time to make an important decision.
As you had predicted, light began to appear at the end of the tunnel. Things were relaxing again, taking on a new normalcy and you had to start to take up your old life again. Conversations with Chris had increased over the last few months, you had too much to say but it was a bit difficult for both of you to put it on the screen, so in the end you always ended up talking nonsense and getting a laugh out of each other. Maybe that was what you liked best about him, that he managed to make you smile even in your worst moments. It was comforting to discover that he was well, that he had overcome, with his more and with his less, that period and that your feelings towards him had not changed.
It was obvious that you were back to your routine, and that meant that work would barely let you take a break. The New York company had not dealt with the COVID crisis very well and the situation was quite alarming. You barely had time to reconnect with your friends, as you set foot in New York City hundreds of business problems fell upon you. Stress was trapping you, preventing you from even sleeping at night, and all you needed was to escape from that environment because your head was going to explode. You were told that several trips were planned to discuss the impact the pandemic had had on various locations around the country, and you felt an immediate relief when you were told, unless you could get away from the centre of the bomb.
Your destination was even more comforting, as it was barely 30 kilometres from your previous residence with Chris. The plane left for Boston first thing in the morning, the sky had not yet awakened and you chose to rest your eyes for the 60 minutes that the journey took. You hadn't spoken to him for the last two weeks, basically since you arrived in New York, when he called you, you were in business meetings and always came home in the early hours of the morning, falling into bed. That was your life, quite complicated to complement with external factors.
The meeting with the Boston headquarters was not too negative, which got you to relax and send good news to your company. The most positive factor you brought out is that you had finished early enough to do what you had in mind since you discovered your trip to Boston. You borrowed a car from your company and set off for the house where you had lived for almost two years. You didn't know if he would be there when you arrived or if it would be completely empty, but you erased those thoughts from your mind and just drove.
You knew the route perfectly, you used to do it every morning. It was nice to rediscover the variety of colours that those little forests could have during the autumn. You lowered the window so that the wind would fill the interior of the car, producing extreme relief in you, relaxing every limb and freeing your mind from any stressful event. That's all you wanted during the long, final months of your life. It took you just over 30 minutes to reach your destination, and when you were there the world around you came to a standstill. It had been so long since you had been in front of each other that a little worry had formed inside you.
You assumed that naturalness was the best way to deal with such a situation, so you chose to get out of the car and face what might happen. You analysed the outside of the house, there was no car in the driveway, no sign of anyone inside, but a very familiar voice, along with some barking, guided you to the back of the garden. A wistful look on your face, and your smile widened when you discovered that Dodger, hearing the rustling of leaves under your feet, had noticed you. From the distance he headed towards you at great speed, causing Chris to fix his gaze on you. As usual, Dodger lunged at you, causing you to fall backwards into the wet grass, but you were used to that.
The next few minutes hundreds of emotions met in the air. The reunion with Chris was silent, but many things were said through the eyes. First came the nervous smiles, then the excited look and then the hugs.
"It's been so long since I've hugged you... that I've forgotten how it feels to be hugged by you," he whispered those words in your ear and made you tremble, wishing that the embrace would never end.
There were no questions between the two of you, no "What are you doing here" or "Why did you come here", you didn't need an answer to either of them, you wanted to focus on the moment. You went back into that house, for the first time in a long time, accompanied by a Dodger that was fully seeking your attention and that almost prevented you from walking.
"Let's go, buddy! Let Y/N in the house," he said trying to catch him. "Oh, he just ignores me. I'm sorry you'll have to manage on your own. He has chosen, very smart."
Chris' comment made you show a sweet smile as Dodger tried to lick your whole face as you crouched at his height.
"I've missed you too, sweetie," you said, standing up as you could.
You headed inside the house, where Chris was watching you with a tender expression on his face. As you entered, a warmth and that unmistakable aroma of Chris was in the air. It was a mixture between the smell of wood from the fireplace and his fragrance. That caused your senses to come together and create a familiarity in you. You looked around curiously, quickly analysing every corner, Chris waited while you checked.
"It's all the same," you said in a soft tone smiling at him.
"Yep," he replied in the same soft tone. "Will you stay for dinner with us?"
You showed him a smile as you slowly nodded. "That sounds great."
You knew you had one night before your plane back to New York left the next day. There was too much to do and too much to say for just one night, and neither of you were likely to start that conversation, you were experts at it.
Both of you got down to work in the kitchen, as if you were back in the past. Neither of you were experts in that field, but you used to let yourselves go. Dodger, calmer, took a seat in his basket and watched you with curiosity.
"Beer?" asked Chris, approaching you with a bottle.
"Thank you," you took it and took a little drink, imitating him.
The situation was common, two people cooking, but for you it was not at all common where you were. Chris was a person who did not hide his emotions, and you had seen this during the time you had spent together. In the relationship it was much harder for you to express what you were feeling, but at that moment it was perhaps not too much for you to be back in your old home, with the man you had loved, after a year of not seeing each other and having a relationship that was not quite closed. So you finally put down the knife you were cutting onions with and threw yourself away, knowing that everything could go wrong.
"Aren't you going to ask me why I'm here?" You frowned softly and looked at him.
Chris was caught off guard by the question, as he watched you and arched his eyebrows, while leaning against the refrigerator.
"Okay," he nodded across his arms. "Why are you here?
You remained pensive, you had gone into the lion's den, because even you did not know very well how to answer that question. Why were you there? You opened your lips to look for a coherent explanation, but nothing. Chris was waiting for the answer, but he realised that you didn't know what to say, so he approached you. "It's okay," he said, taking a lock of your hair and putting it behind his ear.
"No," you frowned. "It's not okay."
"What do you mean?" he asked curiously, returning to his previous position.
"To us," you pointed. "I don't know if it's right what we're doing to each other.”
"What are we doing to each other?" he asked gently, trying to get you to express what was on your mind.
"This," you raised your voice a little. "We didn't finish. We have no end..."
"That's why you came," he crossed his arms at a considerable distance. "To put an end to it?"
You asked yourself if you had come to that, and the answer was obvious, no, you had not come to that.
"No", you whispered looking into his eyes, then you put your hand to your face. "God, this is too complicated."
"Hey...", he came up to you again and took his hand away from your face. "If it wasn't complicated it wouldn't be us."
Those were the truest words he had ever said. You both had a magnet for complicated situations and were the first to try to deal with them.
"Try to tell me why you came here," he kindly insisted again. "I have a clear idea, but I need you to confirm it.
You remembered how you felt when you got there, when you drove there, when you discovered that the business trip was taking you to Boston, where he was. All your happiness in those days was for him. During the pandemic you told yourself that you needed a change in your life, that many things had been lost because of your previous priorities, and your mood had also changed.
"I have come... ", you sighed, emptying your lungs and taking in air again. "I'm here... During the pandemic, I realized what really makes me happy, how things can change from one day to the next and that you have to fight for what you want." You felt a little embarrassed. "God..."
Chris knew how complex everything was for you, that you only extracted your sentimental feelings and thoughts when you were angry and had an argument, so that was a big effort.
"Please Y/N, continue", he gave you a soft smile.
"In short..." you started.
"No, don't summarize", Chris cut you off with a little laugh, which relaxed you.
"Okay," you leaned against the kitchen island and took a breath of air. "It's simple, I've decided that I want to be happy, and you make me happy.”
When you released that sentence you felt an inner relief, you freed yourself from a great weight that had been with you for a long time, and now Chris had everything in his hands. The next ten seconds were the longest of your life, you waited to see Chris' reaction, who was just a few meters away looking at you with a little smile on his face, that you didn't know how to take it.
"Well?" you whispered expectantly. "Are you planning to say something?"
The smile on Chris' face widened and he slowly took a step towards you to shorten the distance, standing face to face, finding you between the kitchen island and his body. He didn't say anything, it was what he did that made you realize his opinion. He stretched out his arms to take your face in his hands and approached you very slowly to kiss your lips. Your heart gave a return when you felt him so close to you again, testing his taste on your lips again, rediscovering the touch of his beard. A bark from Dodger came in the moment, but you barely noticed the event, as you were too busy meeting again.
You split up by cutting off the kiss and frowning.
"Wait. You haven't said anything, what do you think?"
"Come on honey, isn't it obvious?"
You arched an eyebrow waiting, Chris rolled his eyes and caught you sitting on the kitchen counter, you being taller than him.
"You're going to make me say it," he said, looking at your smile. "If I tell you that I love you, so that I can kiss you again and then later develop the answer, will that help?”
Those were the things you loved about him.
"It depends on the kiss."
Chris soon had you in his hands again, more firmly than the previous time. You let yourselves go forgetting everything around you, as if you wanted to make up for all the lost time, all the time apart. Chris lifted you off the counter again and you wrapped your legs around his waist.
"I got you," he whispered against your lips.
"You've always got me."

update: may 02, 2022
hi, i’m christine.
i’m 26 y/o, and i’ve grown a lot (i think).
i like being by myself and enjoy doing things solo, although it’s fun to do things with a special someone too from time to time.
i still like watching anime and listening to music. i still like being by myself.
i’m somehow still in school -_-. i graduated from undergrad, 2014-2018. did nursing pre-reqs for a year (2019), then worked as a cna/ caregiver in 2020, during the height of the covid-19 pandemic. after i found out i got into a nursing school, i’ve been in school since then (2020-2022).
i am close to graduating (anticipated graduation date: aug 2022).
i think i have grown a lot since starting nursing school, although there is still soooooo much to memorize and learn, lol.
right now, i realized the kind of nurse i want to be, but i also have a lot of stuff to work on in order to get there. that’s okay.
some nursing specialities i realized i’m interested in are: trauma (you never know what comes in through those doors), ed (emergency department), or (operating room), peds (kiddos ages 0-18). i’ve interviewed for an or internship that is straight to hire once graduated from nursing school....... we’ll see if i get it. results will be known today (i doubt i got it but i’m glad i tried for it !!). i thought i would end up doing psych, but i realize that nursing route is not the route for me.
i’ve made good friends in nursing school, but with this idea, it always comes with a tradeoff. i am still scared to open my heart to being truly good friends with them, and that’s okay (for now). being just friends is enough for me. i’ve made too many “good friends” in the past, and somehow they always just keep coming and going. i wonder when it will stop, but i don’t think it will ever stop. i guess i’ll just never know what it feels like to have that one friend who will finally stay.
right now, i’m working 2 jobs (one as a nurse extender, which is basically half cna and half nurse, and the other as a 1:1 caregiver for a very kind stroke patient who communicates with a word board). the nurse extender job is pretty cool !! i like being in the ed/triage. i’ve gotten to insert iv’s, drawn blood samples, hung primary fluids, secondary medications, gave im injection shots, performed ekgs, po meds, urine collection, talk to patients. all the while, i’m still in school. getting ahead with assignments and currently trying to finish this last essay. as of currently, i am also positive for covid-19 lol. symptoms are mild tho, just congestion and sore throat with a few body aches at first. right now, it’s just a stuffy nose and an annoying, phlegm-filled cough. getting better though, it’s been 5 days.
during clinical today, i felt very lonesome. actually, the whole day i felt very lonesome today. even though my friends are in the same clinical group with me, they still somehow made me feel alone today. then i remembered - ‘friends aren’t supposed to make you feel lonely when you’re with them.’ the relief i felt when i wasn’t next to them made me remember this. today just felt like... a day to be alone. in a way, it felt kind of nice. kind of quiet. comfortable. i drove home quietly too, my head left in a daze from the long afternoon. i realized the only fun thing i did today was look at or policies because the overall day was slow and boring. but looking at or stuff and different surgical instruments was actually quite interesting and fascinating, so i did not mind it since i was technically learning and reading.
when i got home today, i ate, did misc stuff, showered, and laid on my bed for about 10 mins just staring at the ceiling. it felt nice to just lay there, relaxed and in my head with my feelings. i had a quick thought to just not do any school work and just read a book i’ve been wanting to read. i shook the thought away. not yet, anyway.
i spent some time afterwards with myself.... something i haven’t done in a long time. it felt really nice to just watch dreamcatcher related stuff and listen to good music. i miss doing simplistic things by myself. i realized how important it is for me to stick to my roots rather than listen to what extroverted others want to do. i’m an introverted person at heart, anyway.
right now, i am trying to start and finish this stupid essay at 01:33. let’s see how far i get.
That’s pretty much all I wanted to say. I guess I just needed some space to think and write. As I continue along nursing school, I continue to realize how much the world is filled with so much sadness and hurt. I hope the hearts who are scarred out there somehow find its way towards love and healing.

knowledge of a foxy update is apparently the best way (and sometimes only way 🤐) to motivate me to go and complete my silly little tasks. in my timezone, your updates are usually in the afternoon which also usually means they feel like lovely rewards for getting stuff done in time to sit and read!
also seeing some of the lyrics to the song that jungkook posted on his instagram story really just caused me to reminisce about the start and progression of little bean and compare it to where we are in the story currently 😭 pretty sure there’s a lil hole somewhere in my heart now, don’t know why i did that to myself
- 🧩
That's so cute and sweet. Back when I was updating daily, people would tell me how thye'd incorporated my updates into their dialy schedule (right during the height of the pandemic) and it was so cute and meaningful to me. Sometimes you really need that kind of thing as a little rewarding habit! I'm honored it's me :)
And yeah some of these lyrics are feeling for Flux!
That guy you've been seeing in your dreams You've be lying if you said it wasn't me Same time got me caught up in my feelings All time baby you one in a million Like wow we be acting so blind Like how we been wasting this time All good we just get back to living We both know that this business isn't finish
Yeah we got history Stuck in the in between But baby finally

Hey Everyone,
As you have probably noticed, I have neglected this blog for a long time now. I haven’t been on any fandom related social media at all actually. But I figured since I am currently in a good mindset, I want to write a post just outlining some things which basically boils down to a goodbye letter to Supernatural fandom.
Long rambling post below the cut...
This year (and the last) has just taken it out of me in terms of general negativity online both in fandom and in the real world. At first I got tired of fandom (mostly because Twitter is a cesspool of policing and bullying) and then I got tired of everything else (the world sucks right now, and my mental health basically stopped me from being able to participate in any form of online activism – just because I’m not blogging about something, doesn’t mean I don’t support the cause ya know?). Earlier this year, right around the time of the UK lockdowns, I had surgery and a recovery period in which I spent a lot of time with family, and just reacquainted myself with the real world. I think perhaps the coronavirus pandemic made me realise that long before lockdown began I had already been isolating myself from my real life and diving further and further into an online black hole.
It was years in the making. Supernatural fandom preoccupied my thoughts for such a long period of time it got to the point where every moment of my non working time seemed to be spent either online scrolling my tumblr dash or twitter feed, or reading fanfic or doing something fandom related. I invested so much of myself into this show and fandom that I think I forgot who I was before I was a Supernatural fan completely.
After my wake up call in late 2019, which lead me to break free from an extremely nasty clique, I have tried to re-enter fandom on my own terms, as well as attempt to enjoy the source material and the fandom creations to ignite some new spark of love and interest in the show. Yet as much as I have tried, I have failed to do so.
I was thinking recently about someone I used to follow years ago before I ever created a blog. When I was still just lurking in the tumblr shadows and followed the likes of Mittens, Lizbob, and other meta writers of the period, there was a blogger whose name I can’t remember but she was the funniest blogger I had come across. But when the show killed off Charlie Bradbury, she quit. I had never even interacted with her, as I was barely getting my blog started at the time, but I’ll never forget a post she wrote about her feelings on the show. She had recently started watching something else (I think it was Sense8 but can’t recall entirely), and that this new show had given her everything she had never thought she could have from her fave before. She wrote about how her relationship with Supernatural had become abusive. That for years the writers of Supernatural continued to throw punches at fans like her – women, LGBTQ+ people, people of colour, and yet she continued to give it all her time and attention, brushing off the punches because she was so damn devoted to the characters. Then this new show had come along, and it was like she had seen the light. The killing of Charlie Bradbury was the last straw, and she dumped Supernatural’s ass and fled into the arms of her new love.
I hope she is doing fantastically today.
What she wrote has resonated with me for years. I was a fairly new Supernatural fan at the time, and therefore didn’t really understand what she meant. A TV show can’t be abusive. Can it?
Of course, we are speaking in metaphor here, and in no way are these metaphors meant to reduce or limit the truly serious situation of actual abusive relationships, but every now and then, when a new episode of Supernatural has left me feeling upset, disappointed, frustrated and grossly let down, in some cases affecting my mood for days at a time, and therefore my mental health. I have thought back to those words she wrote and quietly agreed with them in my head. Yes. This is a metaphorically abusive relationship.
When I discovered earlier this year that Castiel was most likely going to be killed off in some sort of bullshit self sacrifice before the end of the show, I was extremely distressed. When I found out that my favourite person of all time Misha Collins, supported this ending for Castiel, and may have even been the one who pushed for it, I was more than distressed, I felt betrayed by the person I cared about most. I’ll admit to you all now that in my weakest moments I have fantasized about standing in front of Misha and screaming at him exactly just what kind of affect his “ideal ending” for Castiel will have on his fanbase, on their mental health, and potentially their own safety. This fantasy has me guilt tripping him and doing everything in my power to make him feel utterly shit about the decision. I know what you are thinking – don’t blame Misha, the guy has his own problems and we all know he projects his own self esteem issues onto Cas – and yes, I know this, like I said its only a fantasy to get me through my darkest moments. I don’t hate Misha at all. But perhaps I do love him a little less nowadays than I did back at the height of my fandom life. That’s at least still a little bit more than my feelings for Jensen and Jared which now I can only describe as complete indifference.
I am admitting all of this now knowing full well it will ignite shock and anger among the more die hard fans of J2M, to explain why I need to just leave this fandom completely, or more accurately, why I have already left fandom.
Over the past 10 months of 2020, I have watched a lot of TV (there isn’t much else to do during a lockdown when you are on crutches with your foot in a cast!) and the one thought that occurred to me over and over again was “this show is so much better than Supernatural”.
I kept comparing everything I watched, from the quality of the scripts, the actors, the special effects, to the inclusiveness of the shows. Just so many beautiful and interesting stories that seem to understand their audience, and understand how to entertain and impress without resorting to cringe humour, outdated jokes, and prejudice, not to mention misogyny and queerbaiting – yup, I said it.
The thing is, I think these thoughts have been creeping over me slowly for longer than just this year, but I have been desperately batting them away the way Dean Winchester bats away his own gay thoughts. Unlike Dean though, eventually I couldn’t ignore them anymore. I cannot continue to carve out space in my own soul for this show, which incessantly beats me down regardless of my devotion. The creators, the network, the writers, and sometimes even the cast, have all shown that they don’t care about me as a fan. I’m not some gun toting dudebro living in middle America, so why should they give a damn about me? I’m clearly not their target audience, nor have I ever been.
I know many of you will vehemently deny my personal opinion of Supernatural now. That is absolutely fine. I am sorry to be admitting it, but I had to. I feel like once I finally write out these words, I have got it off my chest and can close and lock the door on Supernatural for good.
Without Supernatural, I am able to focus on my real life, I am able to find pleasure in other things, new things, interesting things, that bring me joy and joy alone – not disappointment and frustration. I found a new job this year, which has been a huge accomplishment as I was stagnating in my old one, and several new hobbies under my belt. I moved to a new flat, I have a lovely flatmate who has been a godsend throughout lockdown, and I have rekindled friendships that I was neglecting due to my Supernatural obsession.
All in all, I am finding post-Supernatural life far more rewarding and content than my life in fandom. It has taken me a while, but I am over the show. And whilst I will always hold a special place in my heart for Castiel, it will be as I know him in my own mind; as the wonderful, strong, powerful and determined angel with a soul, who loves so strongly, and who is worth so much more than his own creators give him credit for. He is up there with Aziraphale and Crowley, with The Doctor, and Buffy, as one of the greatest characters of all time.
So the Supernatural writers and creators can take whatever ending they have decided upon, and shove it up their asses. I am sorry to say that Sam and Dean Winchester are also lost to me. Any love I had for them was destroyed by their later season depictions. Castiel alone is the only character worthy of that space in my heart now. If in time he longs for a companion, I will find one for him, but it won’t be the Dean Winchester of the canon show. Canon Dean hasn’t been deserving of Cas for a long time now.
Perhaps I am still a little bitter about the ending. Perhaps the finale won’t be the disaster I expect it to be, perhaps Dabb will somehow turn it all around last minute following whatever travesty Bucklemming have given us in 15x19. Either way, I won’t be watching.
So this is me saying goodbye to this blog, at least until I have decided what else to do with it. It certainly won’t be a Supernatural fandom blog anymore. It wasn’t all wasted though. I did get a wonderful friendship group out of this fandom, and I have certainly expanded my knowledge of film and television analysis, as well as having enjoyed a great many memes.
I guess in the end, my internal war with my inner bitter Cas girl finished with her winning, and writing this post. Once it is posted however, I will put her to sleep with thoughts of a happy Castiel, who has swapped his wings for a beating human heart, and is living on a beach somewhere beautiful, refurbishing an old Victorian house, and greeting his kindly elderly neighbours. There’s a gay bar on the main strip, and the bartender is quite a dish. Green eyes and light brown hair with a killer smile. Castiel thinks he looks familiar, like a memory from a past life, but they’ve definitely never met, because this man is kind.
Now that she is asleep, there is nothing left for me here. Goodbye everyone. Whether you manage to enjoy the finale or not, I truly hope you too, find your peace.

2020 reflections below
To be honest, 2020 has been the best year I’ve had since 2016. Obviously on a global scale it has been absolutely devastating, and there are aspects of my life that were significantly impacted by the pandemic—I had to leave Greece suddenly in March, several months earlier than anticipated, and in doing so lost some crucial time that I was supposed to have spent with the physical materials of my dissertation—but on a personal level this year has been the most stable and comfortable I’ve been since my accident in 2017. I was not dealing with a massive physical or mental health crisis, or the immediate aftermaths of either of those things, and that is something I do not take lightly.
I spent the first 3 months of the year hiking across Greece, basically. It was really tough—I was pretty depressed, although my meds had just been boosted so I was feeling better than I had in fall of 2019, and obviously missing Ian and Macy was not an easy thing to sit with—but I did it! I had literally planned my entire life for the past 5 years around this time in Greece, and even though we didn’t completely finish the program and the scheduled trips, I still accomplished what I set out to do: I was able to do the hikes and got to explore the country that I love. After my accident, my sole goal was to be able to get my ankle to a place where I could do the program. It was really fucking hard, and there’s still so much more work I can do on my ankle (which is a source of deep resentment for me, something I’m working on) but at the end of the day, I got myself to a place where I could, with some difficulty, do this really physically strenuous thing that had been such a major goal of mine for years. I got to travel the Greek countryside and see hundreds of archaeological sites in a way that is basically impossible unless you’re doing it with the American School. Mentally I was not as present as I would have liked to be, which is something I think I’ll always regret, but I gave it all I had, mentally and physically. Even if I am hazy on a lot of the details, I’ll remember the exultant physical sensations of reaching a peak and taking in the view below, the sweet succulent taste of oranges in the height of their season, plucked straight off the tree, searching every museum for my pots, pushing myself physically to the limit every day but still being able to wake up and do it again the next, trying regional cuisine from across the country, and the camaraderie that all of us built together on that bus and on those hikes. And of course, the saving grace and defining point of the school year for me was spending time with Ev. He already was one of my best friends, so the opportunity to go on this adventure together was so exciting, but he really kept me sane, made me laugh with his stupid fucking jokes, stayed in the back of the pack with me when I was having especially bad ankle days, and our companionship brought me so much joy and support. It’s very likely that we’ll never live in the same place together again, and I will always cherish the time we had together this past year.
My life since returning to Cincy in March has been very stable and consistent. Except for having to TA on campus on Friday’s during the fall, we’ve both just been at home. E’s been out of a job the whole time, but we are very lucky that (bc Cincy is so affordable) just my grad student salary has been able to financially support us. Money is tight, all my savings are gone after Macy’s surgery in July, but we are very lucky to have support systems to rely upon should we need to (fingers crossed we won’t), and that for now, just my income alone can pay all of the bills so that Ian does not have to be on the front lines at the bar, physically interacting with everyone who is still comfortable and selfish enough to be out partying during a global pandemic.
The biggest joy for me of this year was getting to spend 8 beautiful months with Macy. We had her for 3 months before I left for Greece last September, but I feel so blessed to have had more time with the three of us as a family this year, and to spend so much uninterrupted time with her because we were just in the apartment all of the time. I’ve written what seems like a lot about losing her, so I’m not really going to dwell on it, but despite her death I am still so happy to have had the time with her that I did, and to have loved and been so loved in return. I’m hopeful that I can build a relationship with Lulu like I had with Macy, and that as she settles in and settles down, and becomes secure in this new home, that our new family of three can thrive. Another element to this is the fact that basically our only physical socialization with friends came from going on dog walks, mainly with S&D. Since March we’ve seen them almost weekly and it’s been such a good routine and way to see them safely. We’ll all be getting more of a workout with Lulu, though. She’s much more intense about walks than Macy was.
When I first got back from Greece, I needed to just luxuriate in being home, and shortly after that I fell into the hockey rabbit hole. Which has been lovely, truly! I had been feeling a bit stagnant fandom wise, and it was so nice to have a whole new world opened to me, and to see a bunch of my mutuals all going through the process simultaneously was so fun. I still haven’t written anything, and I’m definitely not as involved as a lot of people, but I’ve never been someone who is super funny in quippy posts or makes a lot of connections quickly. But I’ve really been enjoying it, and I’m hoping that in 2021 I’ll be able to post some fic and make some more friends. My ephemeral relationships with people on tumblr have been important to me for many years, but I definitely have appreciated it the most this past year. Tumblr is a really big part of my life, and I love interacting with people/when people interact with my personal posts. It’s nice to have found a little pocket of the internet where I am safe and comfortable and around people I genuinely like.
Getting into hockey did divert my attention from my mental health, and the ways it was impacting my work, for a solid two months, though. I very much used it as a crutch to avoid some bigger issues that needed my focus, which I was diverting to think about big men fucking each other. In August I started seeing a therapist again. We had worked together briefly after my manic episode, because my old therapist had gotten a new job so she took me on for like a month before I left for Greece, and working with her again has been so helpful. I am so fortunate to have healthcare through grad school that makes going to therapy extremely affordable. It’s seriously been a saving grace for me. By working on my mental health consistently I have brought myself to a better, more stable and comfortable place than I’ve been in in years, and I feel empowered to continue on this path to keep accumulating skills and mental fortitude to help me in the future.
As a result of my consistent work on my mental heath, I’ve also been able to develop a much better, healthier relationship with work/my research more specifically. This summer I was in a place where I felt like it was impossible for me to write my proposal, let alone an actual dissertation, but I did write my proposal! And I’ve been building up routines and stamina and now feel like I actually can get this PhD. Which is great. I know it’s not going to be easy, and that I have a lot of difficulty ahead of me still, but I feel very confident in my ideas, and I am so much better equipped to handle things than before.
So yeah, I think that’s pretty much it. For 2021, I want to just keep going in the path that I’ve been forging for myself. The next things I’ll be focusing on are more intentionally working with my ankle, to try and alleviate the somewhat antagonistic relationship I have with it, and to feel more physically capable. I think that re-integrating yoga into my life will be big here, it’s been really helpful for me before, but I’ve let it slip, and then we’ll see what else I can do to help with this. I also want to continue to reinforce a work routine that suits me and maintain/adjust it when I (almost certainly) make the move back to Athens in September. And finally, I really want to post some TK/Patty fic! I have some ideas, some word docs, some (imo) well-selected lyrics for titles, and I just need to dig in a little more and try and unclench my mental knot of perfectionism, as I’ve been learning to ease it with regards to work stuff.

20 Things from 2020 that were Actually Good
Tumblr media
It’s been a long 2020, but the end is near...even though not a lot will immediately change. COVID is still screwing up the world, Olympics cancelled and several good and kind people have passed. But, before we put this year behind us, there’s a few things that were at least some saving graces. Note: Since this is more a personal list of things I enjoyed in 2020 that means there will likely be spoilers of some content, so be warned. Also this isn’t in a particular order and will include stuff from current world affairs to simply tv shows and games I experienced
The Man, United
Tumblr media
Now, I’m not a Man United supporter, as an Arsenal supporter I’m already in the perpetual void of self-inflicted distress. But support towards a team does not cloud the fact that Marcus Rashford has certainly gone above and beyond to respond to COVID. His campaign to feed children over the holidays is certainly a shining light in this year to see that there are people out there who are simply out to do good...but if you score against Arsenal you’re dead to me XD
Fixed by Fan Demand
Tumblr media
When fans come together to protest something, it can be beautiful or ugly, but when the creators accept the criticism and change it for the better, it’s ethereal. Such is the nature of the Sonic movie, who went through a huge overhaul or reverting Sonic to his classic design and were rewarded by positivity and an overall entertaining movie. Likewise, the fan campaign for releasing the Snyder Cut of the Justice League movie has been given the go ahead, being able to even coax Ben Affleck back into the cowl.
Polio and Ebola continue to fade
Tumblr media
With COVID ongoing, hearing that another pandemic-level virus has come to an end is definitely a positive sign. In Congo, the final ebola patient was discharged in March, signifying the end of Ebola at least for one of its most heavily affected countries. In addition, Polio was removed from Africa, meaning that Polio is now 2 countries away from being completely eradicated.
Cobra Kai Season 3 looks awesome, and Season 4 is already greenlit
Tumblr media
With the move to Netflix, the Karate Kid spinoff Cobra Kai has hit new heights and popularity. While Season 2 technically came out in 2019, the move from Youtube Red to Netflix meant that both seasons were rereleased in 2020. Come New Year’s Day, Season 3 is set to be released, giving us 2 great trailers as we build to returns from Chozen, Kumiko and possibly Alli with an I, not to mention at last having Daniel and Johnny team up - I seriously can’t wait.
Oh Captain, My Captain
Tumblr media
It’s always good to give to charity, but Captain Tom Moore captivated the public with his charitable efforts from home to help the NHS, earning nearly £40 million as well as a well-deserved knighthood. Like earlier said with Rashford, If you score against Arsenal you’re dead to me Captain Tom has also been a shining light in charity and service to the public during the time of the pandemic.
Heroes, Diamonds, Daemons and Vampires
Tumblr media
Several newer shows that I’ve been introduced to of recent had strong seasons in 2020. While they started in 2019, My Hero Academia’s fourth season had a wonderfully fun second pod with the Culture Festival arc, with also beautifully animated scenes from the Pro Hero mini arc and the concert from the Culture Festival as well. And while recommended content has informed me often that the current story has left everything...on fire...season 4 was at least fun. Steven Universe also finished its epilogue tale ‘Steven Universe Future’ where for the most part it gave a solid character ending as Steven dealt with the bottled feelings and ptsd he had kept inside throughout the original series. On top of those series was the second season of His Dark Materials, where Mrs Coulter continues to be one of the most captivating characters of television right now, and the third season of Netflix’s Castlevania, which was a fun post-Dracula story with Sypha doing fatality things, Trevor dual-whipping and Alucard...well that guy needs a hug. But in terms of storytelling it’s all good stuff.
All Lives Won’t Matter Until Black Lives Matter
Tumblr media
Racism in this day and age should not exist, as a world who likes to tout how progressive and advanced we are as our forefathers we also seem unable to remove the once abhorrent-norms of prior societies. In the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of police officers, a worldwide wave of protests against police brutality captured the world. Taking the Knee became far more significant than before when politicians lambasted Colin Kaepernik for taking a knee during the national anthem, being a symbol of a passive protest against police brutality and racism in law enforcement. The protest also made the public review their approach to historic figures. Statues of several racists and slave owners were taken down to acknowledge that there are ideals society does not abide in this day and age. People will disagree with me, stating that the protests have begotten more violence and anti-police rhetoric, but it was certainly important and good that the world was challenged in its lazy approach towards ending racism.
The Biggest US Election in Modern History
Tumblr media
I’m sure there are many who aren’t happy about this, but this is my list. Despite not being an American, I spent many days avidly watching the results of this unfold; at work and at home we wanted to hope that sense would succeed and thankfully it has. The people voted, the counts were official and the Electoral College have made the call, there’s no more finagling out of it, Donald Trump is Out and hopefully now we don’t have to worry about America starting World War 3 every time their president speaks. Additionally this has been a triumph for LGBTQ+ and POC votes, as well as giving us our first female, first black and first Asian VP in Kamala Harris.
Pokémon Still Has It
Tumblr media
I know many are critical of Home and the Expansion Pass, but I still enjoyed it all. The main series may be a bit of a narrative downward spiral but they made up for it with the beautiful Twilight Wings miniseries and the love-letter ‘Gotcha’ music video. On top of this there’s also the announcement of the Snap reboot proves that Pokémon can still give the fans what they want, even in spite of heavy - and for the most part unfair - criticism.
Time to Myself
Tumblr media
Possibly the most personal of the list, there was a point when I would wake up, and have to fight staying awake for so long, even on weekends I would be waking up at 5am out of routine. I didn’t do myself many favours mind you, I had about 40 days of holiday in waiting, so I finally decided/was forced to take it, which has allowed me to rest more. This can extend to the greater world, while I couldn’t do it often myself, working from home had definitely allowed people more time to rest having an environment where they don’t have to commute and can do housework or family time in their downtime, having more time and more rest is always a good thing.
The World of Thematic Resolution
Tumblr media
I think one of the things that made me laugh the most in 2020 was Snapcube’s Sonic Riders Real-Time Fandub, that or my workplace conversation when we basically tore into every religion and mythology possible. But regarding Snapcube they are very fun and I hope more people see them because their stuff is gold, not just the sonic stuff their Spider-Man dub is really good too and it’s definitely worth getting a laugh out of.
“ Homosexual people have the right to be in a family”
Tumblr media
The Catholic Church aren’t well-known for changing their minds about much. Which makes it extra pivotal that the Pope not only endorsed that God would accept LGBTQ+ people the way they are, but he also endorsed same-sex civil unions, meaning that even the Pope is an LGBTQ+ ally.
A Marvelous end, and Marvelous returns
Tumblr media
Marvel have done a good job in 2020, in spite of the loss of Chadwick Boseman. Not only did we get a great final season to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but we have had announcements for several exciting shows and movies, She-Hulk, Shang Chi, Ms Marvel, Hawkeye, Ant Man 3, trailers for WandaVision and Falcon and Winter Soldier, and most importantly the upcoming Spider-Man movie, which looks to have Fox’s Electro, Molina’s Dr Octopus and potentially Cox’s Daredevil, Hardy’s Venom as well as Garfield and Maguire’s previous Spider-Men, when they are confirmed things are gonna be crazy but each revelation has led to a chain of every other theory being close to true, which has been definitely an exciting ride.
Cleaner Air due to Cleaner Streets
Tumblr media
While COVID caused a lot of terrible things, lockdown did have a hidden benefit of reducing carbon emissions. Globally, Greenhouse Gas emissions dropped by 7% compared to last year which is leading to of course a cleaner future, with hope 2021 will try to continue this drop by seeking greener alternatives and more renewable energy.
A Vaccine
Tumblr media
An important factor of 2021 will be the distribution of the COVID vaccine. It was very important in 2020 that we worked towards this and the fact that it took about a year for the world to come together and advance medicine to help create this vaccine is definitely a good moment, many viruses have taken years before finding a remedy but this vaccine has been a testament to what the human race can achieve when focused on a single goal, the sooner more people get this vaccine the sooner we can put COVID behind us.
Wrestling for All
Tumblr media
2020 hasn’t been good to the wrestling world; between the empty arena era, the SpeakingOut movement, several companies having to go bust, Black Wednesday, the wwe sanctions against twitch channels and the tragic losses of several wrestlers such as Hana Kimura, Shad Gaspard and Brodie Lee, it’s been a rough spot. But at the same time, there has been some great stuff in the wrestling world. In WWE Smackdown has been on a flier with the Bayley/Sasha feud, the Mandy/Sonya/Otis storyline and everything about heel Roman Reigns has been sublime, Raw despite having mostly weak spots saw the return of Edge, Drew McIntyre as world champion, Asuka being a massive delight, Becky Lynch bowing out on top to be a mother (who is now born as baby Roux), The Hurt Business and the fantastic debut of Dominik Mysterio (poorly booked feud aside) and NXT...well NXT do their NXT thing, Finn Balor back to form, Io Shirai at the top of a stacked women’s division, WarGames being an absolute delight and even Pat McAfee being a solid ‘celebrity heel’ character. Then of course there’s AEW, Dynamite has done really well in its first year even in this pandemic, debuts for the late Brodie Lee revitalized the Dark Order, Matt Hardy, Lance Archer, Brian Cage, FTR, Sting and of course plenty of others, we have had fantastic matches, bright young talent and AEW expanding the wrestling universe with collaborations with Impact and NWA - along their AAA and other alliances already established. This as well as achievements in NJPW, Stardom and several other promotions have provided a nice escape from current events in the form of people beating the tar out of each other.
The Best Games of the Year
Tumblr media
One of the benefits of having to stay indoors for most of the year is that the games industry upped the ante. Alongside the Next Gen Console reveals, fans would be spoiled for choice between games such as Half-Life Alyx, Doom Eternal, the long anticipated (especially in my office) Animal Crossing game, The Last Campfire, Hades, Crash 4, Miles Morales, solid remakes in RE3, FFVII and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1&2. But if you’re familiar with my tumblr you’ll know that my favourite this year has been Ghost of Tsushima, it’s been an absolute joy to play and hope that more games of this quality are to come. Additionally we have seen a fun rise in games such as Fall Guys and Among Us, which has overall provided solid entertainment throughout these times.
The MandalorianS
Tumblr media
Season 2 of the Mandalorian definitely did not disappoint. Din Djarin’s adventure to find Mandalorians and Jedi led to some excellent storytelling, lorebuilding and character returns, not to mention backdooring some more spinoff series to come. Filoni and Favreau continue to enrich the world of Star Wars in an absolute joy to watch, This is Still The Way.
One Piece, the Millennial
Tumblr media
2020 was a big year for One Piece, starting with the continuation of the Oden Flashback with Oden’s adventures with Roger we had some classic panels, some massive scenes and some shocking twists. We also had One Piece’s final Nissin Noodle commercial, which covered Marineford, and the anime bringing to life the end of Act 1 all the way to the end of Act 2. Important above all however is that, technically, the 1000th chapter happened. A monstrous achievement especially for a weekly manga to deliver every week for over 20 years and still carry this much hype is nothing short of amazing. One Piece has continued to be a longstanding part of my life, so to be here for this moment in its history is special, and it has been nice to see others also share in that moment be it new fans or existing fans that I have discovered.
We survived through Memes
Tumblr media
Sometimes all you can do is laugh, and in sad times the internet will always find something to make you laugh which will always be good. In the end we are all in this together and continue to be, so it helps to keep holding each other up and to at least laugh about this horrible year.
And I just about made it with a few minutes to go, goodbye 2020, 2021 you better not fuck this up

To All the Books: Always and Forever
For those that know me, there are two things in the world that I love more than anything else: video games and...books. All throughout high school, I was known as the one who always had a book in her bag, ready to whip out when I no longer had to socialise with my fellow mouth-breathers. To be honest, it was a source of shame as I’d be disparaged for reading when I could have been talking. Worse, even back then, people hardly read things beyond the prescribed texts set by the school’s English Department. To many, I was an anomaly. And it was difficult to discuss anything beyond those that had young adults enthralled such as Harry Potter, Twilight and Eragon with any of my friends. Due to my  niche repertoire, it was a little harder to find anyone with the same interests. Who’s Trudi Canavan? What’s the Silmarillion?
Note to self: Do not read Chapter 13 of Gene of Isis, which is titled Seduction, when friends can very easily look over your shoulder and wonder why a thirteen year-old might be interested in hands sliding down knees.
In my defence, I skimmed over most of the risque scenes as I was more interested in the actual world-building.
Recently though, I’ve stumbled upon a YouTube channel that features one of the major things I cherish: the written word and the characters lurking within. In fact, it’s been a great joy to delve into a few of the book reviews and to learn about the strange quirks that come from being a reader. It’s also great to hear what they might have liked or disliked about some of my favourite books. And, hopefully when the COVID-19 pandemic finally blows over, I too, hope to stop someone in the produce section of a grocery store to chat about Brandon Sanderson (who, by the way, signed my Mistborn books when he was in Australia for Supanova and I asked him a terribly stupid question because I hadn’t sat in on his panel).
It has also made me wonder that perhaps people might be more interested in hearing my thoughts on books. After all, if the internet has taught me anything, there’s still a sizeable audience for any type of content. Books and Fanfiction included.
The only problem, is that I read for leisure. I’ve always hated how, during English class, we’d try to break down each and every sentence an author inserted into their story. Did it matter that the dress was red? I would say ‘no’ but English Literature professors would say ‘yes.’ Why? Because it represents passion and sexiness and every in between. Clearly, the author is trying to state from the very first chapter that what proceeds next is going to be hot and steamy.
As someone that has dabbled with a bit of writing, I know for a fact that I’ve never put in that much thought about my random background descriptions. Most of the time, it’s been: how does that look good? And if I choose to use ‘pivot’ instead of ‘dodged’ in a combat scene, it’s only because I’m trying to change it up a little. And not because I wanted to allude to my failed career as a ballet dancer (which, by the way, would never have happened because I am a terrible dancer).
I suppose I could always break down the things I liked about narrative or the characters. That’s something I’ve always done with video games. The problem with books, however, is that a lot of the characters also stem from the reader’s imagination. While some authors like to paint an explicit picture of what their protagonists might look like, others just give them broad descriptions and let their readers fill in the rest. It’s why I couldn’t get over the fact that Remus Lupin had a moustache in the Harry Potter films. And probably why I fell in love with book Faramir, but couldn’t seem to love his film portrayal in the Lord of the Rings films (which do make the franchise more palatable. Though, they did do Tom Bombadil a great disservice by not including him).
Still, it’s food for thought.
After all, in this day and age, it’s so hard to find someone that has similar interests as me. Honestly, I’d gladly go on a rant about some of the authors that I’ve been introduced to, and others that I’ve discovered. Better yet, I’ve been also trying to expand what types of books that I read. Though, of course, I’m a little leery about reading romance in public - what with their covers and all.
In any case, 2021 is the year that I hope to continue to indulge in my hobby. Hopefully, I’ll continue to read widely even though I’d much prefer to focus on my core genre that I take the most joy out of exploring. Because, even among readers, there’s judgement. Though this isn’t much explored, I still feel a little out of place to reveal how much I love epic fantasy. This might have been due to my mother hoping I’d read Jane Austen back when I was twelve, but honestly, at that time in my life, magic wands and dragons seemed much cooler than Regency England. Since then, however, I’ve read Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights.
Maybe I’ll read more of Jane Austen’s works in the future and develop a deeper appreciation for her writing. For now, my favourite is still Jane Eyre. Even if Rochester is a problematic love interest.
As for my other books, well...all I can say is that I appreciate how fast Mr Brandon Sanderson writes and I look forward to the next story in the Stormlight Archives. Scott Lynch, I need more from Locke and his merry gang of thieves. And you...Patrick Rothfuss...will you ever be able to finish what you’ve started?
But, just like my games, it might be best to go through the huge pile that I’ve yet to finish. Why is it every time that I enter a bookstore I seem to know no restraint and buy, buy, buy? There have been many books that have sat on my shelves, just waiting to be devoured, but have been eclipsed by the latest and shiny titles of a few of my favourite authors.
