Starry, starry night
Paint your pallet blue and gray
Look out on the summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and daffodils
Catch the breeze and winter chill
In colors on the snowy linen land

My Little Pony: Make Your Clue AU PT.2 🐾
@psychedelic-charm you were curious when part 2 would come out
Storybook Alicorns work differently than regular Alicorns. In the Storybook world they will be in their original form, activating their Alicorn form when they use their powers, while in the real world of ponies they are always in their Alicorn form.
Crayon Prints 🔎 Host of connection
Crayon Prints was born a pegasus and his alicorn powers first appeared when Blue first skidoo into Storybook World. Though it seems like a small thing, it's what brought the ability to skidoo (believed as being long lost) back to the Storybook Ponies.
His cutie mark first appeared after his first Blue's Clues' game, But it took him a while to know the true meaning.
Tender Box 🎁 Host of creativity
Sometimes a wise alicorn, sometimes a chaotic earth pony, always a kind and trusting stallion that owns a Present Store that sells almost anything. Tender Box was born as a (chaos magic) earth pony his alicorn powers first appeared after he accidentally created his own skidoo world and was able to solve the riddle of the place to return to their home.
His cutie mark when he made a "perfect" present for his brother Crayon Prints for his birthday when he was stressed with college. Unlike most ponies, it first appeared during his adult life, funny enough, he became an Alicorn before his cutie mark appeared.
Starry Dusk 🎸 Host of Inspiration
The youngest of the three hosts, a unicorn with gigantic hidden magical potential and the dream of becoming a singer. Starry Dusk alicorn powers first appeared after he undid an accidentally cast spell that prevented a village of sentient musical instruments from creating music. Not using his unicorn magic, but helping them to reorganize their sounds to create a new non-traditional kind of music.
His cutie mark first appeared when sang for the first time in front of his friends of the yellow house during his childhood. The star is because Mr Salt called him a star for them first time that day

Everyone's always telling Buck what he should do. Okay, sometimes he did ask for their advice, but every piece of advice he's followed through on lately has ended badly and everything they tell him to do he doesn't actually want to do.
He should want to do something if it's supposed to make him feel better, if it's supposed to be better for him, right?
Josh told him to bulldoze ahead and tell Tommy what he wanted. Tommy told him to re-enact his Buck 1.0 days and spend time with some indeterminate amount of people until he finds someone forever. Maddie and Chim told him to start dating again and also wait for the universe to bring him someone special; another someone. Hen and Eddie told him not to contact Tommy.
He doesn't want to do any of that! He wants to talk to Tommy, to see him, to get Tommy to talk to him instead of giving up on them and running away because he's scared. He wants to tell Tommy he loves him. He wants Tommy to know first and last aren't mutually exclusive. He wants to yell at Tommy, and kiss him, and hold him. He wants Tommy to apologise for breaking his heart and for being a dumbass. He wants Tommy to believe him when he says he won't do the same; well, he might be a dumbass sometimes - but he would never break Tommy’s heart. He wants to apologise for jumping ahead but also not have to apologise for wanting a life with Tommy or for being too much.
Since that first night Tommy kissed him, he's felt reborn. Not in some starry-eyed way that Tommy seems to think is fake and won't last, but in the way that he's shed the skin of past Buck upgrades and finally grown into his body, become comfortable in who he is instead of trying to fit a facade that other people would accept. Always too big, too much, not enough, never content to just sit in his self and be without his worries and insecurities moulding him into something else, something with a better chance of getting people to like him, love him, stay with him.
He’s never felt more himself or more at ease in a relationship that meant something to him than he did with Tommy. Never felt more wholly seen - the good, the bad, and the too-much and not enough - by his partner and adored anyway, wanted anyway.
Halfway through making swiss meringue buttercream instead of breakfast, he realises he's thinking about Tommy. His coping skill, as Bobby called it, has stopped working.
There's butter and sugar in the creases of his hands and nailbeds even after he hurriedly wipes them with the dishcloth over his shoulder. He can see it as he scoops up his phone from the charger and thumbs over to his message thread with Tommy, leaving greasy crumby residue on the screen.
i saw you bubbling
After it happened, after the Chief distracted everyone enough for him to grab his phone and retreat somewhere he wouldn't be disturbed, he'd stared at the space where the unsent message had appeared for twenty minutes waiting for the type bubble to reappear. Waiting for Tommy to hit send on whatever he'd backtyped.
Buck's mind had spiralled with all the possibilities and while it spiralled and he stared and waited he never got around to actually calling or texting Tommy himself. And then the bell rang.
He has time, now. He has things he wants to say.
you were going to tell me something an maybe i wont like what it was but just knowing you almost reached out is kinda driving me crazy bc i have a fridge full of baked goods bc everytime i think about calling you i bake and now i havnt cooked a proper meal in my own place in over a week bc i dont have room in my damn fridge to store anything besides chocholate chip bananan bread and baked alaskas
He wants to say: and it's all your fault! but that's not the whole truth. Buck played his part in this, set the wheels in motion that drove Tommy away from him. But how the hell was he supposed to know that? And Tommy should've known by now he doesn't really do 'slow'.
i'm not sorry for being too much bc i shouldnt haveto apologize for being myself
Screw it. Can't get any worse, right? Tommy's getting all of him whether he likes it or not.
i dont see you as some queer life coach or someone to fill space until someon else comes along
thats not who i am
i thought you knew me better than that but whatevr ig
i wanted to live with you bc i want a life with you bc i love you
i love you
i shouldve said that first
Send after send, typing like a man possessed, he gets out everything that's been pent up inside him since the shock wore off a week ago.
His chest is heaving as the adrenaline rushes through his veins. And his eyes sting. He has to blink away tears as he reads over the last message.
He never told Tommy. Tommy doesn't know. Maybe Buck wasn't sure that night Josh asked him, but he knows it now.
i wanted you to be my last
He still does.
i wanna hate you for giving up on us
but i cant seem to hate you
This whole thing would hurt a lot less if he could just hate Tommy for what he did. It would hurt a lot less if they could find a way through this mess, together, and come out the other side stronger because they know each other better and know they want to fight for what they have.
Real love is worth fighting for. Red taught him that. Real love isn’t found, it’s made. Old gay Thomas taught him that.
Well, Buck found Tommy. Or, the universe did. And he’s going to fight, dammit, because he wants to build a future with Tommy.
His vision has blurred with hot tears. Movement on his screen catches his attention from where his gaze had drifted over to the couch where Tommy had stayed to take care of him through his Billy Boils saga.
Tommy is bubbling him.
Buck’s heart lurches in his chest. His breath catches.
can we talk?
There’s a huff of something like manic laughter as he swipes at his snotty nose.
that’s what i typed
Hope blooms in his chest, sudden and bright and painful in the best way.
can we?
I think I owe it to you to yell at me in person
There’s a long moment where Buck tries to return his breathing to normal but its bated as he watches three little dots appear, then disappear.
Then reappear.
Then disappear.
Then:
I don’t want to give up on us either
Buck’s tears are still making his vision watery, but now they’re tears of joy. He did what he wanted to do - he reached out. And Tommy heard him.
He should take his own advice more often.
#bucktommy#fanfiction#911 8x07#fixit#.txt#s8!buck#evantommy#tevan kinkley firepilot#basically: everyone is giving buck terrible advice an dhe just needs to trust himself and follow his heart

saw the outsiders musical last night (7/20/24) and thought i would make a little post about some of my favorite parts!! brody, sky & daryl were out so i saw trevor wayne as pony, josh strobl as johnny & henry julián gendron as two-bit!
there’s a bit after pony gets jumped by the socs where darry and soda are cleaning the blood off his face and when they’re done and have gotten up johnny comes and sits next to him and takes out a rag and starts also cleaning pony’s face <3 it’s so so sweet
henry does a couple little opt-ups as two-bit in both grease got a hold and hoods turned heroes where i was like “ooh!” i adore daryl tofa so i was a little disappointed when i found out i wouldn’t be able to see him but henry was SO fantastic!! such a talented dancer and you could tell he was having so much fun with the character! such a standout for me.
was deeply impressed by how many items were successfully thrown and caught in grease got a hold like holy shit dude
the LIGHTING in great expectations has pony pointing his flashlight at darrel on “darrel was on his way up in the world” & johnny on “johnny has no kind of chance in this world” and then as the verse goes on he points it at all of the greasers standing all over the stage and the light lingers on them for the rest of the song it’s so fucking cool-looking! and during the chorus the stage starts to look like a starry sky which is a choice they bring back for the little great expectations reprise at the end of far away from tulsa.
the moment where pony & johnny do their little cool guy walks over to cherry and marcia at the drive-in with their popped collars was so precious to me
i ADORE cherry valance and i ADORE emma’s take on her!! her little convo with pony at the drive-in was really sweet and i loved that they chose not to make the dynamic feel like a crush on ponyboy’s part it was such a nice moment of two people finding and genuinely understanding each other so deeply <3
lighting sound & everything was so next-level during the fountain scene-bob’s death like i don’t even think i can describe it it was so much and so crisp and so visceral in the absolute best way
staging for run run brother was SO cool — there’s a part at the end where they use the tires and boards from the set to make two platforms that the other actors can roll them back and forth while johnny is on one and pony on the other and they roll them away from each other and they are both reaching out so desperately towards each other its so fantastic
i also really liked the part in run run brother where dally gives pony his jacket like he just wordlessly put it on for him it’s so nice
lighting & subsequent blackout at the end of run run brother as pb&j are in the air after jumping off the “train” was ELITE
pony is holding johnny’s switchblade during death’s at my door and at the end of the song johnny reaches out to take it from him but he doesn’t pull away so he’s just holding pony’s hand and then he puts his other hand over pony’s too and they sit there like that until the lights go down <3
LOVED what they’ve done with darry’s character here!! i know people have some nitpicky things with it but he is such a fascinating character and i’m so glad that the musical theater medium was able to do so much with him that the limited pov of the novel couldn’t — brent comer plays darry so so well and my heart aches for him like fuck dude he cares about his brothers so fucking much and he’s doing his best and he’s so so tired :((( give him a break!!
jason schmidt’s voice is SO fantastic holy fuck throwing in the towel was GORGEOUS!! and the little bit at the end where soda hugs darry and it looks like he maybe kisses him on the head a little is so darling <3
the entire “do i look like julie andrews?” scene is so fucking good… genuinely made me laugh out loud. “fine, paul newman, then!” “…no shit?” is so fantastic and johnny’s little “she is pretty as hell :)” about cherry is adorable. and ofc the “goldilocks and her ugly sister” line is fucking great
the way that johnny perks up when he hears “say hey to johnny for us :)” in soda’s letter is so cute
the church fire scene is perhaps the coolest shit i have ever seen onstage
ponyboy is crying so hard after johnny dies that has to sit down on the floor of the hospital room and soda sits behind him and just holds him <3
ponyboy is like actively crying as he narrates dally’s death its so fucking heartbreaking. i liked that they drew the parallels between the train crashes in order to make dally’s death meaningful despite its departure from the book. and the detail about the train derailing when it hit him was wonderfully written.
there is a scene where ponyboy is like inconsolable sitting on the living room floor with his head in his arms after johnny and dally die and cherry comes by the house because she has been volunteering at the hospital and no one came to pick up johnny’s clothes after he died and she thought ponyboy should have them and she tells him there’s a letter in the pocket addressed to him and after she leaves he just sits there for a while and when he finally moves he picks up johnny’s jean jacket and fucking like hugs it and buries his face in it and it’s so so so heartbreaking and soda has to come over and start reading the letter to him before johnny appears and starts singing stay gold <3
johnny starts SR at the beginning of stay gold while pony is sitting on the car at SL but he is slowly moving closer to pony as the song goes on and right before they start singing in harmony johnny sits down next to him <3 <3 <3
josh’s stay gold made me CRY!! especially him and trevor singing “i have known a love that many never know / and that love lives on no matter where i go” holy shit. their voices blend together so beautifully
overall i fucking ADORED trevor’s ponyboy!! he embodies the role so so well and has such a fourteen-year-old boy vibe when he’s onstage that i definitely did not expect from an actor in his twenties! i’ve heard that his pony is a little more emotional than brody’s & josh’s and that was a choice i really really vibed with!! and his voice was like jaw-dropping, what a talent!!
stagedoor afterwards was so so wonderful! i made drawings for the entire cast and everyone was so so nice and seemed to really like them! the ensemble & understudies especially seemed really thrilled that i had made something for them
henry in particular was so so sweet and seemed like he couldn’t believe that i had drawn him! he was like “is this me for real?” and someone (i think it was trevor) told him to look at the back where i had written his name and a little note and he was really excited about it!! he actually was like “this is awesome i have to go inside and give this to my mom right now so i don’t lose it” and his family was right inside the stagedoor and he pointed me out to them and they were so excited! he gave me a hug too it was really nice :)
trevor was also really excited and was like “this is a drawing of me for real? not brody?” and he was so happy when he turned it around and saw his name <3
i gave melody and sarahgrace copies of the same drawing of both of them and as soon as i gave it to melody she immediately looked around to find sarahgrace and show it to her (she was still inside but it was very cute) and then she told me they were going to put it on the wall in their dressing room!!
sarahgrace was like “omg you even drew my bracelet!” and was excited when i pointed out the detail i put in for the pattern on her dress!
trevor yelled across the sidewalk to tell josh to stop talking to his (trevor’s) mom as a joke lmfao
everyone except jason & kevin c came out to stagedoor and they were all so so sweet!! got photos with most of them and they all signed my copy of the book!! overall such a fucking fantastic experience! the drawings were a lot of work but it was so nice to see the looks on the cast’s faces when they saw them!!

@ericka--kinney’s post pointing out that Nichols was watching Wolf and not the starry ceiling in 1x7 got me over my hesitation to post this.
1x7/1x8 Brilliant Minds coda, Nichols character study, wolf/nichols mentioned. (I named Nichols’ unnamed boyfriend from his time in the military Adam).
He knows it’s not the same, but hearing Roman’s story and then hearing it again from Alex, makes Josh think about Adam.
He knows their stories aren’t the same because if they had been found out, it would have been the end of their careers, the loss of their benefits, black marks that would have followed them into civilian life-probably the loss of his medical school dreams.
He knows it’s not the same, but he also knows violence could have been one of the outcomes if they got caught-not state sanctioned like Roman and Alex, but a violent end was still possible.
He wasn’t lying when he told Wolf they made it work. Because they did. But saying it wasn’t ideal was definitely an understatement.
Later-after Wolf kisses him on the street corner. Later-after Wolf tells him about Roman’s fantasy of finding Alex and kissing him in public. Later, he thinks about Adam and his inability to adjust to civilian life-to being out.
He thinks about how Adam could never really stop looking over his shoulder, was afraid to have people over because they lived in a one bedroom apartment.
They were out but Adam never really allowed himself to be out-to be seen.
He knows it’s not the same, but hearing their story, he also knows that feeling. Carving out that space to be and dreaming about that space being anywhere-everywhere.
And when he kisses back on that street corner-when he kisses Wolf at work-it’s because he wants to and because he can. And it’s for Roman and for Alex. And for Adam and for his younger self.
He does it because in the here and now he can. And because he knows it’s not the same, but he also understands.
He understands the joy of getting to publicly spend time with a man he likes. Understands the thrill of kissing at work-where they really shouldn’t. Understands the joy of getting caught and if there are consequences, it’s not because they’re both men.

You had no idea why Alex and Josh were dragging a boy to the train station, and were even more confused when they got on. You followed of course, your curiosity piqued and mind focused on what they were doing. It was already past curfew for them. They weren’t supposed to be out like this but clearly, by their actions and ease alone, this wasn’t the first time they had done this. You lost them at one point, trying to figure out the schedule of the train to ensure that you’d get back, and took to slowly moving through train cars as it began moving to find them.
Naturally, you got distracted when your eyes caught dark landscape flashing by and you took a few moments to stare out the window. Or perhaps several minutes, the darkness was truly inviting to you. Going to a door at the end of the car you were in, you pressed your palm against the glass and watched the occasional lights flicker by. It’d been ages since you had left the academy grounds, either of them, and you missed the eery silence. The train shook and ratted around, and as you blinked a loud bang erupted in the night and you flinched back from the bright flash of light.
Bloody hell what was that!
Taking a few moments to blink the stars from your eyes, you were more prepared for more of the loud pops that exploded just outside the train. If you remembered correctly, Josh liked to make flash bangs. They must be just up ahead. Leaving behind the window, you entered the next train car and spotted Josh fiddling with one of his flash bangs. Hurrying towards him, Josh’s eyes widened when he spotted you and he turned to the hidden part of the train care where Alex must be. Josh spoke something to Alex and your brother was immediately sticking out from behind the metal wall and glaring at you.
“What are you doing here!?” He yelled. You gazed back, unperturbed by his raised voice and words.
“I could ask you the same,” You retorted, stepping forwards to see who the poor boy that had gotten dragged into Alex and Josh’s games was. The moment your eyes settled on starry blue eyes framed by black lashes you paused in step. His gaze held yours, much like your own. Demured yet something lurked deep within, something that made a spark in your mind and a warmth bloom in your chest. A like mind. You were unable to get in another word, for the train rattled and you were thrown off your feet. Stumbling back, you heard Josh let out a yell, and then a hiss at your feet. One glance down was all you had before a bright flash went off and a painful explosion rang in your ears.
Stunned, you slumped over against hard plastic chairs as your ears rang in deafening silence. With your hearing in a blackout, you focused on your breathing and basked in the peaceful comfort that almost reminded you of your death. Silent. Cold. Pacifying even. Your hearing came back with a resounding ringing in your ears and you pressed a hand to your head. That beautiful silence hadn’t lasted nearly as long as you had liked. Blinking, you saw Josh trying to drag Alex away from the car door. Oh Alex was making a right mess of things.
You had the best luck in calming in down when Alex was in a mood and clawed forwards. But as you reached the three boys, Josh flung Alex away from the door and his momentum was furthered by a lurch of the train. You watched with a passive face as he leaned off kilter out of train, terror on his face. Then he was gone. Smashed into a pole along the tracks. Silence reigned once more, death spreading its touch around you. Blinking you settled your eyes on the boy that was Alex’s latest target.
His nose was bloody, a crimson drip having run over his lips, but you were captivated by his hypnotic eyes. You could have swore that you saw a reflection of yourself within his eyes, haunting pain and a need for that blissful silence. Reaching into your jacket pocket, you pulled out the embroidered handkerchief all girls at your academy had, and offered it to him.
You didn’t go to Josh’s funeral, naturally, if your father had learned that you’d followed Alex he would be ever so irate with you and that would just be a bother. So you simply played the good daughter and prayed with the other girls at mass, and went about your week under the guise of normalcy. It was not a normal week. You couldn’t get hypnotic blue eyes out of your mind. Or midnight hair. Or even the color of his blood staining his nose and lips. Crimson. A pretty shade that matched blue and black.
He still had your handkerchief. You’d promptly left for your dorm room before Susan grew worried and raised alarm to the dorm mother. She still tutted at you for staying out so late, but you reassured her that your brother had been in your company so you hadn’t been alone. It was nearly a week later before you were back on the boys academy grounds. You were walking with the girls in the play, on your way to rehearsals.
Passing by Alex who was painting part of the set, you saw him eye Susan. Peculiar. Alex had never shown interest in a girl before, you wondered how that would bode with his hot headedness. Entering the grand room of the academy, you helped Susan and Eloise into their stage garments as Ethel pulled out her clipboard. Your fingers fussed with Susan’s head piece, making sure that all of her brown hair was tucked away by white fabric.
“The piano was tuned,” Susan softly spoke while attaching the wooden cross necklace around her neck. You spared a glance in the direction of the piano, pleased to hear so.
“Then I shall practice some of the pieces,” You murmured, finally pleased that Susan’s costume was ready. “I am sure Ethel will request that I play the music in time for the scenes you will practice.”
“It would help to speak our lines while you play.” While Susan and Eloise began speaking to each other about their roles in the play, you walked out of the changing area and headed for the piano. Ethel promptly followed you, clipboard in hand. She scribbled something down on a piece of paper and thrust it towards you.
“These are all the scenes we are rehearsing today, find the sheet music for the scenes and play them when I tell you to.” She ordered before striking off to do something else. You almost made a smart ass comment about her not saying please, but held your tongue. Picking up the folder of sheet music, you riffled through the pages and pulled out what you needed. Settling them up on the stand, you uncovered the keys and pressed the ones that had been in need to tuning. Perfect. There was nothing like playing a freshly tuned piano.
You did a few repetitions of your basic warm up to get your chilled fingers to move smoothly. Perhaps you’d get lost in the music and give your mind a chance to think of someone other than the blue eyed boy that consumed your thoughts. So you focused on the rich notes blooming from the piano and the strong voices of the students practicing their lines. Scene by scene, you put up with Ethel’s orders and as things finally wrapped up, you were once again floating in a state of in-between. Cold. Silence. Blue eyes. Blue eyes? Black hair… you were thinking of him again.
“Mind over matter,” You murmured to yourself, looking up at the panes of stained glass. You felt eyes on your body and paused in your shuffling of papers. Looking up, you looked around. No wonder you felt at peace. Pushing back from the piano, you rose from your seat and brushed out your skirt before striding for him. Perhaps you’d finally get a name…
“Hello,” He spoke as you walked up to him.
“Hello,” You echoed, clasping your hands together in front of you. He slowly reached not the inner lining of his blazer and withdrew a familiar looking handkerchief.
“I got all the blood out of it,” He murmured while you kept your eyes trained on his. Such a pretty blue.
“I wouldn’t have minded, it is just a bit of blood,” You answered honestly, slowly taking the handkerchief back. It was quiet for a few moments before you decided to speak up. “How do you know my brother?”
“We were roommates for a short while.” He explained to you. You made a noise in the back of your throat in surprise. Alex had pressed your father into making sure he never had roommates… “My name is Nigel.”
“I’m—”
“The lovely Lady Mary,” Nigel cut you off, a slight smile at the corner of his mouth. “You’re the talk among the boys.” Your eye twitched ever so slightly, not unnoticed by him. “Oh don’t worry, it’s nothing bad. Alex is quite protective of you, warned off any boy brave enough to even look at you.”
“Surprising,” You spoke softly. “Given the rumors whispered among the girls at my academy.” It was Nigel’s turn to tilt his head.
“They don’t understand,”
“No, they don’t,” You echoed, looking back at the girls. “But not all of them are cruel. Besides, I find solace and beauty in silence.”
“Is that why you like playing the piano by yourself? Because they are loud?”
“They don’t understand me,” Your eyes caught sight a notebook tucked beneath his arm. “Pardon for prying but you don’t appear to be observing the play rehearsal.”
“I like to draw,” Nigel supplied, shifting his grasp on his notebook. “I enjoy listening to your music while I work on my diagrams.”
“You draw diagrams?” You questioned, wondering what was interesting enough to draw diagrams of. “May I ask of what?”
“Would you like to see them?” Your eyes sparkled, echoing the delight of your interest and nodding eagerly, you took a step closer. Nigel took his notebook and opened it, flipping a few pages until he landed on his latest drawing. It was the anatomy of a bird, cleverly and expertly drawn to show the innards in the most beautiful detail.
“Impeccable,” You breathed, itching to stroke the fine lines of the diagram and trace the neat scribbles of notes Nigel had written in the margin.”How many have you done?”
“Quite a few, it’s a hobby of mine,” Nigel said proudly, turning the page to show you more of his diagrams. You were truly fascinated by the macabre drawings and attention to detail, admiring Nigel’s ability to both capture the artistic look while being scientific at the same time. Rather than stand awkwardly in the alcove at the end of the hall, you and Nigel moved to a bench off to the side. You found that you liked hearing him talk about his passion for anatomy, and that his voice was so soothing to you.
Nigel told you all about the dissections he had done for his diagrams, which easily explained the detailed drawings. He was a meticulous, calculated, and intelligent. Pointing to a diagram of a rabbit, he’d found it after his neighbors dog had caught and killed it, Nigel explained the process he’d done to preserve the body so he could later study it.
“What do you intend to do with all this knowledge?” You asked, fingers drawing down a page in appreciation. “Your work is incredible, surely you have some plan to utilize your skills…” A far away look bloomed within Nigel’s eyes for a moment before he responded.
“My parents want me to become a doctor, or a lawyer, my father even mentioned becoming a banker once.” You took note that he hadn’t answered your question, but simply told you what others expected of him.
“That is what your parents want,” You reiterated quietly, feeling the weight placed upon Nigel’s shoulders. It was similar to the one that rested on Alex’s… and yours. “What does Nigel want?” He stared at you, only becoming more enamored with you. A small smile crept onto his lips.
“I wouldn’t mind becoming a surgeon.” You nodded in agreement, a small smile of your own appearing.
“That makes sense, your eye for detail with these drawings, I’m sure you’ll make a splendid surgeon.” You said, looking up from the diagrams to peer out the widows. It was a rather blustery day. The following week would be even worse.
“And what about you?” Nigel asked in turn, wishing to know more about you, the only girl that had ever really interested him. You looked back to him and softly shrugged.
“I’m not so sure, my father… he has spent most of his time and energy making sure that Alex is built for success. I’ve just been an afterthought. Of course he cares for me, has ensued that I have the best education there is, but I don’t think there is much expectation of me from him. I like music, but I am not sure how I would turn that into a career.”
The future was a daunting thing to ponder. You longed for silence and darkness, that calming feeling washing through your body once more. How odd that Nigel exuded that wonderful feeling. You didn’t mind.

***Table of Content***
The Beginning: Part II
JAKE: Greta Van Fleet was born about four years later, and was done so without Danny or Coley, initially.
It was me, a drummer that my brothers claim I “poached” from Jazz band in high school, Josh was singing, and Sammy—who Josh and I had ‘practically press-ganged into playing with us instead of doing his homework one random afternoon–was on bass.
2013
She can’t put into words the utter admiration and love that fills her while watching them perform, cheering and whistling as if it was her first time experiencing it anywhere else aside from the Kizska’s garage.
And it doesn’t evade him—the undivided attention she offers up on a gold platter through starry-eyes and beaming a smile that shines a light of its own back onto him from where she’s made sure to get closest to the stage every show.
It’s branded his memory like an iron, his mind tracing over the stamp of it as metaphorical bows are taken and curtains fall, the four guys finishing their set and making their way towards family and friends who have come to support them.
He sees her engaged in conversation with Sherri and Julianne, Ronnie and his mother having joined them.
When the girl his eyes are set on takes notice of them, she lights up.
Jake’s always holding out a hope that perhaps one day, it’ll be him that she automatically locks eyes with after it’s all said and done, grinning ear to ear as she does so.
But for now, she’ll go out of her way to ignore him to save herself some grief, and he’ll continue to step aside to let her bypass him and his brothers without interruption.
As always, he refuses to watch her jump into Holton’s arms—her fingers in the damp locks of his ginger hair while letting out a laugh that she fakes to convince herself she’s happy—before the feeling of victory is run out of Jake’s body by defeat, and solidified in a kiss.
JAKE: Holton was our first drummer, before Danny came into the picture…he was also Coley’s first boyfriend. I introduced them without realizing I was introducing them, and Holton chased after her endlessly until he got her.
I realized, rather quickly, it was a conflict of interest by the time Coley joined the band.
The Kiszka’s garage rattles with the loud bouts of hollering taking place between the group of teenagers.
“Look, we can try it and see if it’s—” Coley’s attempt to calm her riled friend and fellow bandmate is in vain as Jake ignores her entirely and cuts out to Holton, “I’m tired of repeating myself! I said I didn’t want the double pedal and you—”
“—You won’t even give it a chance, Jake!” Holton snarls at him.
“Guys, please just take a breath, it’s not that serious!” Sammy pipes as Josh simultaneously shouts, “I just want peace!” despite the fact he has no problem ensuing such chaos of his own with his brother.
“I don’t have to give it a chance because I know it sounds like shit!” Jake snaps back to the drummer, not even acknowledging his brothers or Coley.
“Okay, Jake, let’s not start—” Again, Sammy is cut off.
“—I’m surprised you can even hear it over the sound of your train-wreck shredding that you demand be blasted at the highest capacity!” Holton hisses, stepping closer to Jake, prompting Coley and Josh to ease between them should it result in the many arguments Jake and Josh get into.
“Hey, we’re not doing this shit!” Josh harshly scolds them, needing this rehearsal to wrap up so he can head back to the school for his play practice.
“It’s to cover up your lack of fucking tempo, prick!” Jake harshly barks back to Holton.
This jumpstarts the both of them in a screaming match, sounding like two dogs fighting as they push closer to one another until Josh is dodging out of the way and yanking Coley back with him upon the realization that neither of the boys are paying any attention to either of them.
Karen’s furrowing her brows in her bedroom, hearing the distant commotion of shouting downstairs, followed by the sound of breaking glass.
Ronnie’s standing in the doorway of the kitchen’s entryway to the garage as she watches the scene before her with wide-eyes, having rushed to witness what was unfolding.
Josh, Coley, and Sam have stumbled back to avoid getting hit with flying shards.
The double-bass pedal lies in the grass of the yard, having sailed through the window of the garage by Jake’s hand.
It issues silence momentarily, Coley’s hands resting over her mouth in shock and fear of Mrs. Kiszka barreling in here to let all of them have it.
Holton only rolls his jaw, keeping his cool the best he can, and stomps to leave the garage to retrieve it.
Jake, in turn, rushes past him to get to it first—his two brothers and best friend running after them.
“Stop being a child!” Coley scolds him as he fights Holton off the pedal, and slings the piece of equipment even further away from them.
As soon as he turns back to face Holton, the drummer’s fist is colliding with his cheek.
SAM: Jake and Josh would get into it all the time. Thrown equipment and punches were never a big deal because they were brothers, you know? They’d go at it, mom would come out screaming, and in a few minutes they’d be back to normal and complimenting one another's genius…but Jake and Holton got along great until Coley joined…I think it had a lot to do with the fact that Holton didn’t want Coley in the band and Jake knew that—but asked her anyway.
Karen angrily finishes making dinner, fed up entirely with her son and his bandmate while overhearing Coley shouting at her boyfriend over the phone from the guest bathroom down the hall.
She can somewhat manage Jake and Josh throwing fists and equipment, but Holton isn’t her child.
He’s someone trusted in her care, and she’s not at all comfortable with the idea of he and Jake knocking heads so harshly that it comes to the destruction of property and results in blows.
“…He threw it, Coley! That isn’t cheap!” Holton says to his girlfriend, who’s glaring at herself in the mirror as he speaks, her heart rate still high from witnessing Josh and Karen have to peel the two boys from one another once Jake tackled him.
Thank God Holton’s mom was as understanding as she was, chopping it up to, “They’re boys. Boys fight over stupid things. They’ll grow out of it.”
“Holton, you don’t hit people just because they make you angry.” Coley fiercely defends Jake, which is no surprise.
“He threw $179.00 through a fucking window, Coley! I don’t think you’re hearing what I’m saying!” He outbursts.
“I hear what you’re saying, and it’s still not an excuse to lay hands on someone!” She exclaims, her voice hurting her own ears in the small half-bath tucked away in the Kiszka’s downstairs hallway.
“We’ve been together for a year now.” He says to her, pacing his bedroom. “You’ve been in the band for half of that, and that’s coincidentally how long he’s been a complete dick to me.”
“What the hell do you want me to do about it, Holton? He’s his own person.” She exhales, waiting for his response.
He wants her to care that their band mate is disrespectful and dismissive toward him.
The drummer always looks at Coley to agree with him, take his side, and railroad Jake’s opinion the way Jake manages to do to his.
But she endlessly tries to coax her boyfriend to just trust Jake’s judgment on a song, or a sound…
That’s what started Holton’s speculations that she has feelings for their lead guitarist.
And, because he’s not blind, he knows for a fact that Jake cares about her beyond the reach of friendship and band-like comradery.
He can see it plainly from his place behind the drums: the looks they exchange right in front of him, the silent flirting, the obvious attempts Jake makes to impress her…
In fact, the one thing Holton and Jake can agree on is the fact that Jake very much likes Coley, and she knows it—choosing to play stupid for the sake of not hurting anyone’s feelings.
Holton falls silent, collecting himself before he says something to potentially hurt her feelings even more, eventually getting out, “Are you gonna crawl his ass like you’re crawling mine right now or is he gonna get puppy-dog eyes and a half-assed, ‘Please, don’t do that again, Jakey’?”
Wrinkling her nose, she rolls her eyes and states, “I’ve never called that boy ‘Jakey’ in my life.”
“I don’t know what the hell you call him when I’m not around, Coley.” He blatantly blurts, not even hiding the venom in his voice as he does so.
Coley digs her teeth into her tongue, exasperated with the amount of times this gets brought up.
So exasperated, infact, that she feels no need to defend herself anymore in the midst of his allegations, and hangs up on him.
Leaving the bathroom, she rubs her forehead and lets out a deep breath before stepping into the kitchen.
“I’m about to go, Mrs. K.” She tells Karen, softly.
“Before you do, can you grab that bag of fruit from the fridge and go throw it at Jake? I told him to put it on his cheek and he didn't listen—shockingly enough—and I don’t want him to swell up anymore.”
The icey chill of the freezer air nips at her fingers and she grabs at the mixed fruit in its bag, holding it up.
“This?” She inquires, to which Karen glances at her and pipes, “Yep. He should be in his room.”
Jake winces when he tries to prop his pick between his lips in the midst of playing around with a riff he’s stumbled across.
The ache in his cheek has spread to the muscles connected to his mouth, making it uncomfortable to even speak to himself under his breath.
It’s when Coley shakes the bag of frozen goods that he stops what he’s doing and notices her standing in the doorway.
“Your mom wants you to use this.” She throws him the bag and it lands on his bed next to him.
Glaring at it, he disregards his frustrated mother’s attempt to ease his pain.
He takes in a hiss when Coley plops down on the bed in front of him and presses the bag of frozen strawberries to his swollen, bruised cheek, not even bothering to flinch back and see if she accidentally hurt him any more.
He eyes her like a wounded puppy—his big, obnoxiously pretty, brown eyes looking at her.
“I’m so sick of this, Jake.” She tells him, her phone vibrating with the notification of Holton’s incoming call that she ignores, and he watches her do so, before he’s starting, “Maybe if he’d stop being such a dick—”
“—You took it too far.” She’s fast to get it out, shaking her head.
“He punched me in the face, and I took it too far?” He inquires, furrowing his thick brows.
“You threw it through a window!” She scoffs.
The look of defeat on her face pulls guilt from him for the first time.
Of course he feels bad for once again screwing up the window in the garage, but it seems he’s trampled all over Coley’s feelings in the process of proving a spiteful point to her irritating boyfriend.
“I can’t keep defending you when you act like this.” She adds, having never volunteered to be the one trying to keep the peace between her boyfriend and her best friend—although she feels as if she has.
“You defend me?” He knows she does, he can see it in any disagreement he and Holton have.
The blonde rolls her eyes at his question, looking at him pointedly but not saying anything, to which he adds, “You don’t have to, you know—defend me, I mean. I’m a big boy. I can handle a few bitch fits.”
“I know.” She mumbles. “But I also know that Holton tends to be more harsh toward you even if it’s unwarranted, so…”
His eyes shift as they look into hers, his hand leaving its stagnant place on his guitar to gently lay overtop hers that’s pressing the frozen bag to his face.
Pulling her hand away, slowly, his eyes flicker to her lips.
“I wouldn’t say it’s entirely unwarranted.” He speaks to her lowly, feeling a lump form in his throat.
“Don’t look at me, look at the guitar,” is what he would say to her at least once each time he’d work with her after they turned fifteen, smiling almost shyly at the fact she had completely forfeited her specific attention on his teaching to just study him.
By the time they were sixteen, Coley was having to tell him the same thing in the process of trying to run a riff by him that she had learned on her own, feeling nearly paralyzed under his brown-eyed gaze.
“Don’t look at me, look at the guitar.” She had stated, to which he didn’t even bother looking away from her to say, “I don’t need to look at the guitar. I can hear if it's right or not.” She didn’t doubt him for a second because the only way he had learned to play was by ear, but his cocky little smirk highlighted the fact he used that as an excuse to permit himself to keep memorizing her the same way she had done him…then Holton started coming around, and because she wasn’t friends with him prior, and didn’t run the risk of losing him altogether, he was the more comfortable choice.
Regardless of that choice, however, Jake’s list of priorities that included guitar and his freshly formed band, had shifted to make room for Coley, too.
Rarely does he go without letting her know it without even having to say a word.
The repeated ringing of her phone once again rattles against the bedding, pulling her away from him while she whispers out a soft, “We can’t.”
“Why not?”
It’s the million dollar question that she has yet to provide a good enough answer for.
“I’m with Holton.” She repeats what she has to every now and then when it's just the two of them.
“You don’t have to be with Holton.” He states.
“We’re not shitty people who sneak around and cheat, Jake.” It sounds as if she’s trying to convince herself of it, pulling her brows together.
“It’s not cheating if you leave him, first.”
“Me breaking up with him and immediately getting with you is no different.”
“Things happen, feelings change, and avoiding them doesn’t make them any less real. Not everything has to be so damn black and white, right and wrong, Coley.”
“This is wrong.” She motions between them. “He’d be crushed if he knew we were even having this conversation, Jake.”
He stares at her, watching as she pulls her hand from his and grabs the bag of frozen fruit in her palm.
“I promise you, Coley, he knows we’re having this conversation.” He says it while his fingers go back to the strings of his acoustic, picking at them quietly as if ending the conversation before she can argue.
They both know that her boyfriend isn’t oblivious to what’s been brewing between the two of them for years now.
“I have to go.” She mumbles, grabbing her phone to see she has two voicemails from her boyfriend.
Jake observes her blank stare momentarily, before pulling his gaze from her when she adds, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Yeah.” He quips, not attempting to speak anymore about it for the night.
It’ll inevitably get brought up again in another month or two, and they’ll continue on as if it doesn’t exist.
COLEY: It was a miserable place to be in for all three of us. I think relationships are supposed to be fun at any age, especially when you’re still kids growing into adults.
None of that was fun for me or Jake—regardless of what the third party has spoken publicly in the past.
I didn’t enjoy having feelings for someone else, while also bearing this self-imposed responsibility to stay with my partner at the time because I believed it to be the most sound decision.
And Holton being kicked out of the band had nothing to do with any interpersonal workings of anybody’s feelings.
JAKE: Quite a bit was tolerated through that whole year of Holton being with us.
Him being late to rehearsals, him wanting to be paid for rehearsals, skipping out on rehearsals altogether…lucky for us, Danny and Sam had grown to be close friends, so he was over at the house quite a bit, and even played guitar and drums.
So, when Holton would no-show practices, Danny would step in.
The last straw was the night that Danny officially replaced him.

Teaser (1 year later):
"I'm not gonna lie, I started hating you. I couldn't stand myself for it, but I also couldn't help it. You left me, went there without me, and brought her into our lives... but she was yours and she loved you. Watching you both fall apart broke my heart for you, but the devil in me rejoiced...until I realized that I might never see her again either, because she loved you. Then I hated you even more."
Jake looked at his best man, who was still crouching on the armchair, elbows resting on his knees. He didn't look up, still toying with that cuff in silence, but there was no denying that the words had stung. Hate. Even though it was something they both knew, it had never been said. But that's not how the story ends, it's not today's song. There was more on his mind, he already felt it sitting on his tongue...
"I thank you brother. This has been a rough path we all took, but you brought her into my life in the end...and I'm forever grateful. Now there are two people that I love more than life. The world may be burning, but our hearts are full, so we'll survive. We will thrive. I'm a lucky man."
Oh Olalla more than a name Rest your eyes and stay in the shade You were hiding over the hill In a quiet never so still
From Olalla to the city lights Somebody told me to believe in better times
Oh Olalla where will you go If the line ends out on the road There's a story meant to be told But the door has shut in the cold
Oh Olalla on the borderline There is a world down on it's knees for better times Oh Olalla don't you fear the night There's only time left to believe To Believe

Tender // Ch. 3
MASTERLIST
word count: 1600+
CHAPTER WARNINGS: descriptions of child abuse; religious violence; language; anxiety; jealousy; arguing; brief suicidal/homicidal ideations; undiagnosed unspecified mental illness
When newborn babies are baptized, the process typically involves the priest or minister sprinkling or pouring the blessed water over the infant, while announcing the baptism ‘in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.’ In Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic traditions, the child is fully immersed in water, which seems dangerous, but recorded events of injury or death during the ritual are rare, to say the least. It’s generally safe for the child, barring any complications or underlying issues. But when the young boy’s mother mentioned baptism, her intentions were much more sinister.
He'd heard the water running as the bathtub was filled. He was told not to be afraid, that fear was the Devil’s work. He was ordered to behave, and do as he was told, and he would be cured. He wasn’t sick, he wanted to argue, but he knew better. Talking back would only worsen his punishments; he rubbed a sore spot on his jaw and waited for his mother to call him.
The bathroom was humid, the air thick, and the mirror fogged up. Wisps of white steam could be seen rising from the water’s surface. He wanted to be obedient. Maybe they’d love him, then. But still, he hesitated, provoking Mother’s anger. She grabbed him, her too-long fingernails leaving marks on his arms, and dragged him to the edge of the tub. She lifted him, far from gently, and plunged him into the hot water. The boy screamed as it scalded his bare skin. He instinctively fought in an attempt to be released, every nerve in his body protesting against the pain. He was only a child though, and he was no match for the grown woman that held his small frame against the bottom of the basin. And he wasn’t able to stop her from forcing his head under, nor was he able to prevent the burning in his chest as his lungs begged for air.
~
I knew that dating, and falling for, a famous rock star would come with its fair share of difficulties. When they went on tour last time, our relationship was still new and I was still in the process of finding my footing, so it was easier. I expected all the attention that he would be showered with anytime we were out in public. Whenever he posted a new picture on social media, the comments section would blow up, countless women publicly expressing their desire to get Josh in their bed. Those are easier to brush off and not take too seriously, but it irked me regardless.
Today has been especially annoying. This is the third person who has approached him for a photo. I know I’m glaring at this dumb, starry-eyed girl who’s interrupting our day together, fawning over him like a lovesick puppy. It’s disgusting. And what makes it worse is that Josh dishes it right back. He’s all excited smiles, more than happy to meet a fan. He throws his arm around her shoulder and poses as her friend snaps the picture, then plants a kiss on her cheek. I think the girl might cry, and I’m silently hoping she trips and eats shit on the concrete.
I don’t say another word until we get to the car. I start it and grip the steering wheel before Josh rests his hand on my thigh.
“Hey, what’s wrong?”
He’s so clueless and it only makes me angrier. “Nothing’s wrong.”
“Liar.” Yeah, that’s all I am, isn’t it? “Tell me.”
I clench my jaw and pull out onto the road. If I say what’s on my mind it likely will only make things worse, so I keep my mouth shut, hoping he’ll drop it. But he continues to pester me until I can’t ignore him. “If you want to talk so bad, why don’t you hit up your new girlfriend?”
After a moment, he does something I don’t expect and laughs. Why can’t he ever take anything seriously? “Are you joking? You’re pissed off because you’re jealous of a fan?”
“I’m not jealous.” I most definitely am. “You kissed her.”
“On the cheek! I kiss a bunch of my fans on the cheek!”
“Is that supposed to make me feel better?”
He laughs again, but this time it’s out of exasperation as he crosses his arms and turns to look out the passenger side window. “That’s fucking stupid,” he mutters.
“Okay, yeah, I’m sorry that I don’t want to watch my boyfriend flirt with everything on two legs,” I bite back.
“Oh my God, could you be anymore dramatic? I’m not flirting with anyone, so stop acting like an asshole.”
Here we go. I’m the asshole. Make me out to be the bad guy. Am I being a bit unreasonable and possessive? Probably. But it makes my blood boil when strangers think they have the right to touch him. He doesn’t belong to them. He doesn’t see the issue, like it’s all just a big joke to him. I consider that he doesn’t give a shit about me, and my grip on the steering wheel tightens so much my hand is beginning to ache.
I see a box truck in the opposite lane of traffic, and for a split second, I wonder how much damage it would do if I turned the wheel, just enough. But I shake it off and push it away. That would be outrageous. I don’t really want to hurt him.
I don’t trust myself to speak again, so I keep my focus on the road. The silent treatment only pisses him off more, which I expected. Josh is a fighter; he always has to have the last word, and he hates being ignored. I do just that, though, and he’s fuming by the time we get back to his house. I think it’s best if we give each other some space, so I don’t go inside with him. I drop him off and keep driving, mostly to calm myself down, partially to evaluate why I’m angry and if it’s even worth it.
It’s not. Josh is right, and it’s a stupid thing for me to be upset about. Still, I’m unable to shut off the voice in my head that says he’ll never truly be mine. I know he won’t change, and I know if I want to keep him, I need to bite my tongue and swallow these raging insecurities. I think about walking away, letting him off the hook so he can be fully free, but the thought makes me want to vomit.
As much as I try to reel it in, my mind keeps going back to that girl, and the two before her. I create scenarios in my head about Josh while he’s on tour, crawling into bed with any person who bats an eyelash in his direction. I’m imagining him letting other men touch him, kiss him, fuck him. And the deeper I dive into my own fears, the worse it gets. Then the guilt sets in. I’m beating myself up over how I’ve treated him. I’m ashamed of myself for not being able to trust him; he’s never given me any reason not to. If I’m being honest with myself, I’m fully aware that my personal issues and inability to trust people is not Josh’s fault, and there’s no reason to take it out on him. My internalized precarity, and maybe a trace of narcissism, makes it difficult for me to admit when I’m wrong. I refuse to take the blame where I probably should. But I know if I have any chance of saving what I have with Josh, I need to suck it up and apologize, even if it’s all pretend.
~
I give him time to cool off and give myself time to get my thoughts in order. I need to have a plan. Later in the evening, I text and ask if I can swing by to talk. He answers immediately. ‘Of course,’ like he thinks it’s a dumb question, like he’s not even mad anymore.
I’m wrong about that. When he lets me inside, he stands in the living room with his arms crossed, watching me expectantly. Oh. He’s waiting for an apology. I should have known he wouldn’t be the first to cave. He doesn’t think he should have to apologize. I don’t really think I should either, but I swallow my pride.
“I’m sorry, Josh. I acted like a jerk.” I’m intentionally trying to look remorseful, even though I don’t feel it.
“Yeah, you did.”
I’m tempted to bite back and start another fight, because fighting is easier than whatever this is. But again, I push down the urge. “I was jealous, and I know it was stupid. I won’t happen again.” It feels like an empty promise, because I know I can’t really guarantee it, but I can try.
“Thank you.” He’s thanking me for the apology itself, but I’m not sure it’s something he should be grateful for. He drops his arms and closes the distance between us. I grab his waist and pull him against me as soon as I have the opportunity. He doesn’t resist. “I can’t help it, ya know. Physical touch is my love language, and I love getting to meet people. But I’d never purposefully do anything to hurt you, Finn. I love your stupid face too much. And no matter how many fans I get to interact with, you’re the one I’m coming home to.”
I don’t know what I expected but it isn’t that. Even when he’s irritated with me, he’s so loving. His words help to reassure me, and my own anger seems to melt away. I’m not entirely sure what it means that he can diffuse that bomb so effortlessly. Maybe one day I’ll figure it out, and all the strangeness will start to make sense.
I place a gentle hand on his cheek and kiss him softly. “I love you, too.”

I do hope they don’t “resolve” Buck’s heartbreak in just an episode, but even more so no matter if the breakup is permanent or not, I hope they have Buck come to understand and reckon with his putting Tommy on a pedestal.
I would not have thought it to be an issue given the scenes we got in 8x05, especially the ones with Eddie where Buck was in full pouty boy mode because his boyfriend wasn’t on board with believing in the curse. They just seemed so settled and comfortable, not at all like Buck was still starry-eyed and trying to impress the confident & interesting pilot who has a cleft…
Which is why one on the reasons the anniversary date scene was so jarring because even though there was flirty banter, there was an awkwardness there that is a total contradiction of the previous episode. Why was Buck that flustered over the woman at the restaurant? This is not the same man that suddenly had a rule about not dating people he meets on calls because he was already down bad for a man he just met (sn; I will never forgive them for not having the Harbor tour scene first because of that line!! Whatever, it’s canon to me). I don’t know if he genuinely found her attractive…
but it felt very weirdly reminiscent of the Buck who seems to be so afraid of being perceived as “bad” that he invents these updated versions of himself(and good god i have not missed those cringy buck 2.0, etc moments please don’t let them return 😅🫣) and is dismissive of what’s actually being communicated to him (i’m having flashbacks to the cringey post hookup scene with Taylor when he talks about not wanting to disrespect her; like her consent could not have been more enthusiastic please chill)
Obviously Josh’s speech affected Buck, but I think it struck unintended chords, it spurred him into action instead of reflection; it’s like he experienced this moment of disillusionment when he learned about Tommy’s connection to Abby, but then was able to pivot right back around as if it gave him permission to keep feeling how he was, which obviously was admiration (does he love Tommy?) and it should’ve been the perfect opportunity for Buck to ask Tommy about his scars.
I think Buck was definitely caught off guard at Tommy’s ex-fiancee being Abby and that Tommy hurt someone he cared for, but even more distraught at these sudden “negative” feelings he’s feeling towards Tommy and I do think that Buck needed a different perspective on why Tommy did what he did (and this could have served as Buck being understanding but bringing Tommy down from his pedestal and rightfully so) but I think it gave Buck an out so he could go right back to his safe feelings for Tommy, he even dismissed (or ignored rather) Maddie’s assumption that he was worried Tommy would hurt him. I don’t think that was on his mind at all. I think he was uncomfortable with his disillusionment and just wanted that discomfort gone. And, kind of the same point but maybe a different angle, I think he also probably felt a bit spurred on to completely bypass any meaningful conversation he and Tommy could have had about Tommy’s relationship with Abby (let alone any others) in order to avoid feeling any judgment or criticism towards somebody (whom he cares for) that did have to hide who he was, which Buck can’t relate to.
All this to say, I don’t think Buck is very skilled at finding a middle ground. He does have the biggest heart, but I think he has such a black and white view of people and the world, or at least he can’t seem to hold two opposing beliefs/feelings at the same time and in his impulsiveness he jumps from one extreme to another and I think we’ve witnessed that whiplash on Tommy’s face more than once (thank you, Lou).
To me, Buck is the poster child for conflict avoidance in his intimate relationships (all, not just romantic). He will fight for/defend the people (and job) he loves, he just doesn’t know to fight with them.
#long post#this is probably very disjointed i started it last week and may have lost the plot a bit lol#bucktommy#sad girl hours23 ramblings

You were finishing some stretching exercise the doctors had given you that helped with pain and allowed you to sit better when Jeonghan and Seungkwan popped by your side.
“Can I help you guys?” You smiled. The two of them were especially careful around you in those two months that passed in the temporary house you were in.
“Yeah, Y/n, you actually can.” Jeonghan nodded and returned your smile. He and Seungkwan held your hands from each side. “We prepared a surprise for you. Do you think you are able to go with us to the deck?” The room you’re staying has an access to the deck of the house, this was decided so the human doctors could have easier access to you without startling the hybrids.
“Sure, oppa, I think I can. Help me out, you two.” Your smile just grew bigger as the hybrids practically carried you to the wooden deck. They cracked jokes and were mindful of any discomfort you could feel during the 5 minute walk you three had to accomplish. You then were sat in a padded chair that was part of a circle of other five chairs with a campfire still off in the center.
“What are you guys up to here?” You asked.
“Wait here for a minute, Y/n. Don’t move, okay?” Seungkwan dropped a fuzzy blanket on you before he and the older one turned and disappeared inside the house. You sighed and let a little giggle out. Looking around, the small backyard was still strange to you… You started to feel melancholic missing your own home when noise came from behind you.
There were Jihoon leading Seungkwan, Dokyeom and Jeonghan. The four had food, drinks and other fun camping accessories in their arms and had big smiles on their faces. It was normal to see this combination of hybrids around, since they had similar hobbies and energy most of the time…
“Now we can finally start our campfire!” Seokmin was clearly excited. You and the others laughed while the hybrids distributed the food and the drinks. Jihoon and Jeonghan started to try to light the fire while the younger ones sat beside you. “Do you like our surprise, Y/n?”
“We wanted to relax a little and wanted to spend some calm time with you… The last few months are a little chaotic for all of us.” Seungkwan explained. Your smile failed a little.
“Thank you, guys.” You sighed before coming back to a happier mood. “We all needed this, it’s a really nice idea.” You patted both of their heads with care and the canine hybrids cuddled you a little before the others called for their help.
---
“And the hybrid discovers fire!” Jihoon couldn’t help himself and screamed when they were capable of lighting up the fire… After an hour or so of trying.
All five of you laughed out loud, finding the situation ridiculous but still funny. Finally, the boys were able to sit with you and the group just spended a moment looking at the flames and enjoying the warmth and the silence of the night. Seokmin was starting to move and find something to play with when there was a noise inside your room and a voice shouted from there:
“You guys are doing things without me again! That’s not fair!” You all turned to the glass door and saw Joshua coming in your direction with a guitar in one of his hands. You opened a yellow smile while the others died from laughing.
“We did warn you that we would be starting, hyung!” Seungkwan got up to help the older cat hybrid, who was already gasping for air. “You were the one who decided to go search for the guitar Mark-hyung gave us.” He started to nag as he helped Shua to a chair and draped a blanket on his back.
“Well, I think it was a great idea.” You defended the Snowshoe cat hybrid. “And you arrived at the right time, Josh, we just got the fire going.” He smiled at you before robbing the occasion maknae of his just opened snacks.
“Yeah! What is a campfire without some songs?” He pouted a bit before starting to eat. All the boys went back to laugh and your night officially started. Everyone of you six were enjoying the vibe, telling jokes and sharing lighthearted experiences.
Jeonghan and Joshua shared about the gossipy aunts that took care of them. Seungkwan shared about the best hot cocoa his first owner made him on a cold day. Jihoon told everyone about pretending to be a nocturnal monster to scare new trainers. And Dokyeom told about the sunny days with his family he could remember.
You did some sharing too but being careful to not mention much about the hybrids your parents helped… Your boys didn’t like them much. As the night went by and you all got cozier and more emotional, Shua took the guitar out.
“Sunday morning, rain is falling...” He started the newest song he had heard with his beautiful and delicate voice before being interrupted.
“No!” “Stop!” “Enough of that!” The other boys drowned his singing, getting a giggle out of you. Seungkwan got up, passed Shua’s guitar to Jihoon and sat again. “Now, let’s sing something we are not all tired of hearing already.”
“I just learned that last week!” Poor Jisoo complained. This time, not even you came to his defense. Since Jackson showed them Youtube, the boys developed very specific tastes in music and videos to watch… Joshua had been constantly listening to that song. Everyone, including Josh, laughed and then started to sing sweet funny songs.
The vibe was warm and you haven’t felt this relaxed and in peace for a long time after the attack. The younger boys started to fall asleep on their chairs while the older ones started to go deeper in some experiences into some healthy(?) trauma bonding. You were just enjoying the talk, giving some input here and there.
At some point, you stared at the stars far into the night sky. Your eyes started to close, you had to fight to keep actively listening to the conversation around you. The warmth and your body finally out of the alert state made your fight a lost one… Right before you were completely in Morpheus’ arms, you heard:
“Sweet dreams, Y/n. We’ll look out for any nightmares.”

I know you dislike Donna’s “ girl boss” story line, but how do you think Josh should’ve handled her asking for more opportunities? He was pretty dismissive of her, and then Gaza happened.
Well I think the issue is actually how Donna handled it. Donna needed to stop expecting to get those opportunities from Josh. Josh... I mean, ideally he would be nicer to her about it and listen to what she's saying more closely but materially it wouldn't really be different. I don't expect Josh to tell her "if you want to do that you have to go somewhere else" and encourage her, even if maybe he should, because I don't expect him or really most people to be that focused on Donna over himself.
I think what Josh really did wrong was intermittently treating Donna like something other than his assistant for all those years leading up to it. I think it created unreasonable expectations and it was unprofessional and kind of unfair, and he shouldn't have been surprised when Donna wanted all of that to amount to something eventually. This is kind of an unpopular opinion I think because we all love watching Josh give Donna a chance to shine in the first 5 seasons. I do too, and I'm not saying I wish he hadn't done it. But I think Josh doing that despite there not really being more opportunities for Donna within the White House created the problem we see later.
I also think because Josh has this slightly deranged, starry-eyed view of what working in the White House means (and it's not just him, it's most of the characters especially in the Sorkin era) on some level he thinks Donna should just be grateful to be there and that's where some of his dismissiveness comes from.
Am I remembering correctly that before Gaza she's upset about not getting to go on a trip after she worked hard during the preparation, even though she's not going because Josh isn't going? It sucks, yeah, but I'm with Josh on this one: them's the breaks. The president needs what the president needs.
I think Donna is just at a place in her life where she needs to focus on herself and growing her career more than serving the president, but that means the White House isn't the right place to do it. Josh should understand that because he's been in that place in his own career before, but I think it's in-character that he wouldn't.
I guess the "right" thing would be to have an honest conversation about what Donna's role is and what she wants. The one time they try do that in that arc is in Impact Winter and it's so annoying, because Donna schedules a meeting but doesn't give Josh any information about what it is. She takes it so personally that it keeps being rescheduled, but Donna knows better than anyone that Josh's schedule is that insane and getting repeatedly bumped doesn't mean you're not important, it just means fifteen more important things are happening. On top of that, we actually see her eating breakfast with Josh and hanging out, so she had an opportunity to tell him the meeting was important, but she chose not to do it.
Also I think a lot of what I hate about Donna's girlboss arc would be solved by Donna getting more screentime to actually be a person in the later seasons, but that falls into the same trap as everything in the last two seasons: so many characters, so little time.

The 2024 reboot no one was expecting...
Those of you who have been around for a while might just remember back when I did fanfiction, and if you do, you might remember the story of my Supernoobs OC Josh Carter, the aspiring social butterfly, future superstar and reluctant superhero whose life was getting way more complicated these days...
Back towards the end of 2019, I was really starting to lose steam with him; the inspiration I had for him was really starting to wane, especially given the fandom seemed to peter out and my previous partner-in-angst-crime Pumpkin (@whynotzoidbergdotorg) moved on to other creations. I've definitely missed creating fandom work over the past few years, but between not really finding anything to grab my attention in the same way and a series of setbacks in my life (not to mention the grind of growing my YouTube channel), things just happened to fall by the wayside.
But it seems I wasn't posting into the void after all! Josh and his story left a huge impact on the small but surprisingly resilient Supernoobs fandom, and over the past few months I've been pulled back in, thanks especially to @ghostlyapivorous' @superastral-official and @jaspydunks' @noobs-rewritten. So much so, that I've been re-motivated to return and at least continue (I don't think I should be presumptuous and suggest "finish") Josh's story. In addition to a few unreleased chapters from the original run, I've been working on continuing the story, and I've almost gotten to the end of Dancefest, where we originally left off.
We'll be picking up from there soon, but it didn't seem fully right to go back to using the old 2016 designs of our main cast — my artistic workflow has completely changed since then. So, it was time to give them all a glow-up. The primary goal was mainly to get them looking closer to the show's style, though I've also taken the opportunity to resolve a few longstanding annoyances with some of the characters and change some things up. Despite not being part of the main cast, I also decided to do an image for Zoey, given she's a pretty recurrent character in the series. Just like the first time around, expect to see new art of these kids in the future (though I don't think I'll spin up @joshcartersblog again).
Look out for the continuation of Josh's story very soon, but in the meantime, catch up on how Josh got here:
A Future Super-Something, the first story: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Perfect Disasters, the second story: 1 2 3 4 5 6
Over and Out, the third story: 1 & 2 3 4 5
Diamonds on the Rebound, the fourth story
Reminiscence, the fifth story
A Hero’s Prelude, the sixth story: 1 2 3
Dancefest, the seventh story (so far)
Text versions of everyone's descriptions under the cut.
Josh Carter
Josh Carter has only one goal in mind: becoming one of the popular kids. Enamored with fame and starry-eyed about celebrity, he's chasing the top of the Cornbury Middle School food chain with the help of his friends. Clever, ambitious, and seemingly carefree, he'll stop at nothing in his quest to rise to the top without losing himself, while making plenty of buzz along the way.
…But will something bigger and more destructive than the current popular clique or a mortifying social mishap stop him in his tracks?
Dreams of a social media-perfect lifestyle
Friends with Jock Jockerson despite not being a jock
His "walk-in closet" is practically a department store for one
The Yellow Superdude
As elusive as he is mysterious, the Yellow Superdude is the newest addition to Cornbury's local team of intergalactic virus warriors. But he doesn't seem too happy about having the opportunity of a lifetime; honestly, it seems like he doesn't get along with the other four at all. With the heroes already building local recognition and facing even bigger battles, can he ever become the hero the Earth needs — and does he even want to?
Alias: ???
Powers: Energy blasts, stretchy body, shapeshifting, possibly more if he ever actually went to training
Always has messy hair for some reason
Simon Parker
Josh's best friend since forever, Simon is the realist of the group. As much an inventive strategist as an easygoing wingman, Simon's a true ride-or-die in Josh's popularity adventures, turbocharging their social game while keeping his starstruck bro down-to-earth. They've been there for each other even in their lowest moments, including Simon's brutally public one last year. It's a trust that makes Simon unafraid to be honest with Josh. But despite all this, is Josh keeping a super-sized secret from him?
Enjoys the outdoors with his parents
Still recovering from a 7th-grade incident where he was dubbed "The Whale"
Maintains countless inside jokes and references with Josh
Rebecca Hewitt
Rebecca is a punchy wildcard who's garnered her own notoriety. Since stumbling into Josh's high-flying life in sixth grade, she's been looking to find herself somewhere in the many aesthetics Josh's influencer adventures bring into her world. Rough around the edges but fun at heart, she's not one to mess with, but worth having in your corner.
Recovering horse girl
Still throwing out Mini-Horse Friendship Force merchandise
Best dodgeball player in the class
Zoey Miller
Zoey is the intrepid reporter behind The Cornbury Hound Dog, Cornbury Middle School's unofficial school news blog. Zoey can be eager and persistent to a fault, the perfect attitude for hunting the next big story. She keeps up on all the gossip around the halls — especially Josh's ambitious search for teenage stardom. Totally not because she has a crush on him or anything…
An ace at alliteration
Has a venerable collection of visor hats
Elaborately daydreams of meet-cutes with Josh
