Headcanon time.

I’ve mentioned before that I like headcanoning Flint as a yugioh player because of his voice actor, but the thing about yugioh is that it’s one of those games like chess or smash bros where it isn’t fun unless the person you’re playing against someone of an equal skill level.

If your opponent is stronger it’s no fun cuz you’re losing horribly, if your opponent is weaker it’s no fun cuz they just look kinda pitiful.

But what separates yugioh from smash bros or chess is that the rules are a little complicated and it can be hard to learn, so even though it’s no fun unless you’re equals most people would (in my experience) be happy to meet someone who knows the rules.

Flint’s pretty good, he keeps up with the meta and he’s gotten bored of challenging the same group of students. Boba, who’s never played before, sees Flint’s boredom and offers to play with him, Flint warns him of the complex rules and summoning conditions, but Boba insists, this is something his best friend really cares about.

Flint takes it slow, explaining everything in great depth and making sure Boba gets it, he even goes a little easy on the guy.

Only to lose within three turns.

Flint tries again and again and again and Boba just keeps winning, he doesn’t know how Boba is so good, but this leads to a comedic chain of events where several students see the game LOOK easy and decide to play, only for them all to fumble the same way any beginner would. (they’re underestimating Boba’s intelligence, he’s a blue shard and all)

This results in Yugioh becoming massively trendy within the school, Jada uses ancient gear golems, Wren uses ice barriers, Lucretia uses traptrix, and several others join with awfully thematic decks with one goal in mind.

Boba being the final boss is peak cinema. While they were studying magic Boba was finding THE HEART OF THE CARDS

Before anyone can face Boba though, they must first defeat his royal guard- his original teacher, Flint!

And that alone is still a challenge that makes people actually have to build good decks and get good at the game, leading to a small elite team of students who consistently challenge Flint and Boba, where everyone is learning from each other and the skill level just keeps going up. If Everston had a nerd club they'd all be Yugioh-tournament-level competitors and none of them have any idea just how good they are because this has happened in the bubble of the school

It starts to become a problem and teachers are threatening to ban and confiscate cards that are being played in their classes until Moody points out that this is actually pretty good recreation for the students, and both Magiclicas and Ciphers are equally involved and its fostering positivity, so teachers instead say no cards in class (they CANNOT be trading waxed cardboard in potions class!) but they set up an official school club for the Yugioh obsession and the students build Boba a throne in the club room

So Starlighter is a "Minecraft Roleplay" that is voice acted and semi-animated in Minecraft. It's a modern remake / reboot of a much MUCH older MCRP called The Magiclicas, (pronounced muh-GEL-ih-kuz) which is very fun but also objectively...kinda bad. It's still a fun and engaging RP, but it very much contains artifacts of its time—to which Starlighter makes active improvements.

I know that there's a very tiny Tumblr fandom for The Magiclicas, and practically none at all for Starlighter (save for Becca, our strongest soldier). So, consider this your propaganda post! And a threat for both ramblings and art, which I'll be reposting promptly.

Hmmmmm one of my friends got me thinking about a behind-the-scenes production making-of MCRPs again

We tried doing a few for Starlighter but they kinda bombed horrifically on Jakey's channel so we stopped cause they weren't worth the time to make them

And originally I had actually wanted to do them just by myself?

So I'm kinda thinking of doing that again- but would anyone be interested? In one for Starlighter, one of my own WIP RPs, or both maybe?

And would a text post like a dev(b)log be better, or I try my hand at a video format for it again?

Ok that’s a relief, I probably shouldn’t be too mean because I myself am a writer and have Favourite Guys, don’t want to be a hypocrite. I’ve just read stories before where the writer had an Obvious Favourite that I didn’t care for and I was worried Starlighter would be going down the same path.

Anyways, I kinda like BobaFlint as a ship name, it sounds like Boba Fett and that’s funny. If I had to suggest a proper name it would probably be something like PopRock.

On a different note, isn’t it kinda funny how so far, Everston’s classes include history, potions, cryptidology, dark magic and fighting? Like imagine going to highschool and your classes include history, chemistry, biology, crime and karate lol. Where is math and English? Are these kids not gonna learn to spell because they’re too busy learning spells?

(Of course they could be in My Heartstopper, I just haven’t watched it yet)

LOOK ABOUT THE CLASSES- there probably ARE some like. Normal classes but those aren't ✨️interesting to write about✨️ also Everston is said to be a highly prestigious and specialized school, so Magiclicas probably don't have as many Normal classes and they're focused on more magical things? Vs ciphers have their own curriculum that maybe teaches more of our world's fundamental stuff while also twisting it to be "You are subordinate to Magiclicas" propaganda shoved down their throats.

This is also me getting into "I don't fully remember the lore but I'm going off vibes of what I remember" but I believe that since the creation of Magiclicas, they've often been having to defend themselves- from those wanting to steal their power, probably putting down uprisings in places that magic oppresses the non-magic, other Magiclicas fighting for other things, and dealing with magical creatures that were created the same way Magiclicas were. Everston definitely isn't the only place in the Starlighter world! (Even if I don't know if or when we're going to get around to talking about them at this rate.) Displays of magic and combat may be one of the few ways that these different places all can relate too.

But because of this history of using magic in defensive and combat situations, I'm assuming that Everston's magic classes are probably based off of a (Possibly outdated) need for students to learn it. Whether it's outdated or not, they ARE arguably still useful in just teaching students to practice and hone their magic skills, to get them thinking how to solve problems with their special skills and teaching more generic magics that all Magiclicas can use but most people don't if they can use their special abilities. Most Magiclicas probably are trained to some extent in magic combat, but not all as extensively as Everston students are by the time they graduate.

Also, students are currently 15-17 as first year students at Everston (Thea is 16 in her entrance exam.) They DO know how to spell and read and write and do math stuff! Just that no one here is probably taking AP lit classes LOL

Recently I finished exposed! Forgot to mention that so I’ll just write my thoughts here.

-Boba and Wren, literally my two favourite characters, interacting. Yes.

-hold up, what’s the timeline here? Starlighter is only on the second day and yet one of the teachers in exposed mentioned it being months since this started.

-where’s Linux? Didn’t the pink haired girl say she started working for the school newspaper after losing her white shard? Seeing Linux and Wren interact would be so cool!

-as a BobaFlint shipper, the fact that Boba spends his entire screentime talking about romance or trying to convince Wren to talk about romance makes me giggle.

-cheese boy.

-ok I’ll admit, the relationship between Xero and Grey is now somewhat interesting thanks to the finale, but it’s still my least favourite part of the OG starlighter and I just don’t care for it all too much.

Overall it was really good! Glad I got to see more of Wren, she’s always a delight.

Im so confused who is Linux???????? The only pink haired girl is Pheobe from the White Shard Club, who definitely still has her white shard. Or maybe Lucretia, the purple-haired girl that's part of Jaida's clique???? But she never had a white shard, only Jaida. Curse autocorrect! DX

I'm trying to see if I can find what people have dubbed the BobaFlint ship or if there even is one...? Cause people love Boba (rightfully so) but I feel like the headcanons have been just close platonic friends/QPR with them so I'm not sure if there's been a name dubbed for them yet LOL

Thats so fair to not care for Grey and Xero- ngl I don't either. Im just kinda neutral and like "it is what it is" but I'm more interested in other things! I can't WAIT to get into the Thea Questions cause thats when things get more interesting >:3 although fair warning I'm assuming at some point or another there'll be a My Heartstopper 2 or smth cause Grey and Xero are definitely Jakey's favorites to put in Situations XD

Ok I just watched all the episodes of Starlighter (not exposed or my heartstopper yet) and I’ve gotta say it’s really really good! My favourite character has gotta be Wren! I love her seriousness. Boba is cool too, nice to have some autism rep.

I’m REALLY intrigued with where the story is going and I have so many questions about Thea and Jaida and just the world as a whole.

If I’d have to have one complaint, the romance between Gray and Xero feels a bit forced, and actively takes away from what I like about their characters, but it’s still a good series and I’ve enjoyed watching it!

I'm sooo happy you're enjoying the show!!! (And thanks for coming back to share with me your asks have been the highlight of my days LOL)

You didn't hear this from me but I think the Brainfreeze ship is also kind of overrated LOL We originally had a darker personality and story planned for Xero that I personally liked a bit more, but Jakey fell in love with these two's potential dynamic as he was writing and if was right around the time that the Netflix show "Heartstopper" was airing- soooo he got inspired and the entirety of My Heartstopper is just Grey and Xero gay romance LOL

While most of our early ideas have been scrapped, they've been switched out for other stories that work more for what we've got going and I feel that the general arcs we want these characters to go on, will still be fulfilled. Grey and Wren are still two sides of the same coin in reaction to the systematic oppression they face, and Xero despite his relationship, still has some unaddressed issues and the risks he takes still exist. Let us cook we'll get there eventually 🍜

Ok here’s a question you might not know the answer to.

In the intro, Flint is pointing at Boba, makes sense, they’re friends. But why is Flint so angry?

Is he being all “I don’t GET IT! How can so much AUTISM be contained in ONE body!?”

I dont reeeallyyy know the answer, no sorry :( I think it's really just A1's (the artist who did all the intro art!) art style and their interpretation of the sketches they were given by Jakey. The intro was one of the earlier things made so while Flint and Boba were certainly never enemies, their friendship I think came later? So the intro was kinda just Putting the Characters in Situations like anime intros tend to do LOL
