Lmao... We're not getting into this wank again, are we? Especially so soon after the total dumpster fire of minor-sent asks from the other problem?

Erk. Wrong. Fandom is the place for doing things that weren't in the original media. The most obvious example? Hey, those characters weren't gay or in a relationship in the show, but they could totally be a couple! They have so much in common! Let's make them gay in our art and fic.

If you can't grasp this most basic concept, you really have no authority to be dictating what is, or isn't, warranted in fandom. But let's keep going, shall we?

Where, pray tell, are you even looking for these fanfictions? On the tumblr app, which is 18+? In a general tumblr tag, which doesn't have a max age limit? On AO3, which also doesn't have a max age limit, and is more akin to a library which will, obviously, have all manners of content?

And you can hate whatever ships and dynamics you want, nobody's stopping you. I hate Starker with a passion. But you know what I do? I filter, and I use xkit, and I blacklist, and if that's not possible, I avoid the places it's likely to pop up. Because I accept the fact that I can change my behavior, but I can't stand at the beach in front of a massive tsunami, and hold up my hand and expect it to stop. Nobody else is at that beach except you. You're the one who didn't heed the age restrictions (or lack of) of the spaces and the general freedom of those spaces, and is now standing there, about to drown, and all the other fans are standing on higher ground tsking and shaking their heads, because it's just that stupid.

Safe space for who? For kids? There are entire fandoms for Lego, for ATLA, for MLP, and for dozens if not hundreds and thousands of other kid's properties that are populated largely by adults. Because guess what? Kids grow up. People are kids for like 1/6 of their lifespan. And you think ATLA fans will simply stop existing in fandom spaces once they hit 18 or 21? What an incredibly sad way to see things.

You want a safe space for kids, make your own space. Default fandom on the internet is inherently not a space geared towards kids! Not just because, well, it's on the internet, and we all know about rule 34 (if you don't, look it up), but because the existence of a fandom for any given property has zero obligation to only have kids in it. For the reason I just described above.

You're coming into spaces with a naive and uninformed idea of what that involves, then acting like everyone else is at fault.

In defence of Ron Weasley - or: why Weasley is our King!

I have noticed that in the last decade so-called Ron-bashing has almost become a sport in the Harry Potter fandom, or at least in certain corners of the fandom. And that makes me quite sad, because in my eyes it is unjustified and a product of circumstances that have nothing to do with the canon character. People depict Ron as a laughing stock, a truly incompetent wizard who is nothing but jealous and petty. Even in fanfics where Ron is an adult he rarely outgrows his teenage character. I believe this has to do with a few thing I will get into here.

First and foremost, we have to take a stance and decide if we believe that redemption is possible or not. If you think that once a fruit shows signs of rot it is better to throw out than to salvage it, stop reading here. If you think there are parts that can be saved and possibly restored, you are probably a Draco fan as well 😉 and you're welcome to read on.

So first of all, everything we see the characters do in the books they do as children and teenagers. Adolesence is a time of great changes, physically and psychologically. The prefrontal lobe of our brain still develops until our mid-twenties. It is a time to experiment and to make decisions, even if they are objectively the wrong ones, and to learn from that and to evolve into well-adjusted, open-minded and self-reflecting adults. So it isn’t even necessary to ‘redeem’ oneself for what you did growing up, it is just imperative to evolve. I have been working with teenagers my whole professional life and I am always amazed by what happens between the ages of 10 and 20/25.

So Ron is a child in the first books and an adolescent in the final parts and we actually see him grow and evolve. Not everyone is as perfect as Hermione and we sometimes forget that people can be flawed in small ways (not only in big ways such as ‘oops, I’ve taken the dark mark and commit war crimes’). I think people tend to hate on Ron because of this. He is so normal in his jealousy and his envy. We see a lot of ourselves in him and that is uncomfortable. We turn to fiction to experience the extraordinary in both good and bad, but we rarely want to see our very common shortcomings reflected in the characters. Because then we could just read self-help books and do something about it. But we don’t. We just want to escape reality and enter into worlds where everything is starker in contrast, emotions are deeper and stakes are higher.

And Ron is not such a character. He is a mild grey. He is not the hero, but he is also not the villain. Ambiguity and nuance have very little place in fantasy. But I think that is exactly what makes Ron such a great character and the books (despite JKR’s bigotism) so fascinating.

So what I see people do in fanfiction is to push his character to the extremes – mostly make him an antagonist. Interestingly, this usually occurs in in Dramione or Harmony fics. In Drarry fics or others where Hermione and Ron stay together, he usually gets to grow up into a reasonable and well-adjusted adult. And I get it. I love Hermione and I get what she sees in Ron (stability, a deep understanding, loyalty, common values, a wise mind that complements her academic one etc.). But in stories where we pair Hermione with other people we need to get Ron out of the way. Because we cannot, for the love of Merlin, make Hermione be the problematic one in the relationship (she is the queen of the books - she cannot be touched). So of course we have to make sure that Ron is the reason why their relationship fails. And to make their breakup believable, we antagonize Ron so that there is no chance for them to get back together. From a storytelling viewpoint this makes absolute sense. But it does not do Ron’s character justice. Canon Ron is a truly amazing character. The movies did him dirty and depicted him as the slightly stupid one with the punch lines and this has often clouded our image of him. Book Ron holds much more power in the trio's friendship. He is the one who introduces Hermione and Harry to all things in the Wizarding World. He is smart – even though he is not as zealous as Hermione, he is a good student and a brilliant wizard’s chess player. He is genuine, kind and loyal. I won’t reiterate all the smart things people have said about his character before. If you are interested you can check some good arguments here:

Everything he is and everything he goes through makes him a hero in his own way. He is the character with the biggest development and the biggest potential. He overcomes his own shortcomings again and again to stay by Harry's side. Especially in the last books he struggles, makes decisions he deeply regrets and faces his insecurities.

I could go on and on about this… but leave it at this for now. I hope this makes you see Ron in a better light! Fight me in the comments or sing along my praise of Ron!

i'll admit i don't understand something about the fan presence arkane has as a member thereof: the disparity in fanworks and cultural presence compared to their other releases. compared to prey, and deathloop (i'm not going to even bother with the other one), it puzzles me a whole lot.

dishonored is almost 11 years old as I'm writing this, and while dh2 is newer they're both a bit aged in terms of fandom lifetimes. this is not a criticism, to be clear — age and quality are not causative, and many of my favorite things are older than i am. that said, it's odd to me that it still gets regular art, fics, posts about it, etc when the stuff for prey and deathloop seem to have dried up (save a few intrepid souls persisting, some of whom i am lucky enough to be personal friends with, whose work i adore, y'all know who you are). to me, prey in particular has just as much to chew on, just as much impact, and just as much of... all the things that make arkane games special as dishonored does, and yet there's a marked difference in how much presence each has in the present in discussion and creative works. for deathloop it's even starker, though i suspect the more linear, pared-down world and experience in that game plays a role.

again this is not a condemnation or complaint, i love dishonored and i am very glad there seems to be a steady stream of people discovering and falling in love with it, or returning to it, or having never left it. it's nice that it keeps space in the mind like that, and it holds a place in my heart and has since i visited its display at PAX 12 prior to release. however with that said, it leaves me wondering: why don't its younger siblings, and why is the disparity so apparent? what is it about dishonored (and its fanbase) that differs so greatly in impact? i'm aware there's some overlap - i love DH, Prey, and DL all at once myself - but it's a real headscratcher regardless.

thoughts and comments welcome, perhaps someone sees what i've missed. ultimately i just wish they all got about as much continual love as dishonored does, not that dishonored got less.

And just when he thought things couldn't get worse, Parker LuckTM struck back, and now Iron freaking Man is after him. Oh, and Tony Stark has offered him a job.

today is hubby’s bday! few people know this but he was my first supporter when I created this blog - in fact, the whole thing was his idea! at the time I had a starker/MCU blog and did a couple reclists. when I fell back into the drarry pit he was like “what if you did the same thing for drarry but with single recs like those book review YT channels” I was very reluctant because big fandoms can be overwhelming and I didn’t feel creative or qualified to rec HP. not only I wasn’t up to date in terms of reading, I’d always been a lurker and didn’t know anyone around here; starker was a smaller, safe community without an insane to-read list or any other type of pressure. when covid hit I decided to take his advice and created the blog to distract myself at lockdown, that’s how the sit-pee brand kick off 😂 the rest is history. Then they’re like, “Well, who’s the better cuddler?”, so Peter is spending each night with them, alternating between nights. Then it’s, “Who’s the better kisser?”, and Peter *melts* when they kiss him for the first time

And all up until this point, Peter just can’t decide, he says they’re both great. So Tony and Happy take a step further. “Who’s the better fuck?”, and Peter’s like ???

Cut to the next night, they’re both fighting over who gets Peter first, and they obviously play rock paper scissors for it, as grown men do. Tony sulking next to Peter as Happy fucks him. Then it’s Tony’s turn, then they switch. And then they switch again and again

Yes, actually! And entirely out of spite! :D I used to be a hardcore Spideypool fan (I still am tbh just less core), and I once made a post about Spiderio that somehow drew Starker antis into my ask box?? Someone literally came to tell me how terrible it was and shame me for just mentioning it in my post, and before that moment I had had no interest AT ALL in Starker, it didn't do anything for me. But after that I made it my literal mission to post about it as much as possible, and now I'm more of a Starker fan than a Spideypool fan, so :D Thank that poor angry asshole for all my Starker fics ✨

13. Unpopular opinion about XXX character (Yoichi)?

He has the will and capacity to kill. He's a paragon of moral virtue but sometimes the moral thing to do is kill. BUT Yoichi also shares his brother's bloodlust, I believe this wholeheartedly. It just tends to be directly almost solely at his brother rather than the general populace :) He's in Izuku's ear like "Kill his ass, Ninth" and Izuku, full of similar bloodlust somewhere in between Yoichi's and AFO's, rabidly complies 🙏 He's just as insane as AFO just in a different way I believe this wholeheartedly.

Hello! In relation to what you posted earlier today, I was a huge starker fan (which is how I found your work), but recently Bucky has been my Blorbo of choice. I love your use of him in any of your stories. I’d LOVE to see him in your star readers series. Him as a star reader and in a relationship with Steve. *Swoons. What is one canon thing you wish you could change?

-drags my hands down my face- I wish I could shoot the person who decided to cancel Rise and butcher its S2 ending and stunt the character development.

Okay, okay, no um. Man, I dunno that there's much about canon that I would outright change. Maybe stuff I'd liked tweaked or explained better? I guess I'd like to know more about how mystic powers work in Rise. I'd change things a bit just to have a starker difference between mystic power and Ninpo. Like Ninpo feels like it's such an important thing, it's the legacy of the Hamato Clan, literally the power of their ancestors making them stronger and connecting them together. But because of the development of S2, it really feels like it just kind of got shunted under the umbrella of "mystic powers".

I wanna explore the SHIT out of that magic system man. Oh hey, maybe that's another fic idea, someone jot that down.....

What fics do you prefer on a scale of canon compliant to wildly original?

I'm in the ballpark for both, to be honest.

I like fics that build on canon, like missing scenes or expanding on scenarios that deserved more limelight or getting reactions from characters that we didn't get to see.

And I also love the stuff that's two steps shy of being it's own original work, especially when it's got great world building or expands upon the world building of the show or plays really well in the sandbox we were given.

I’ve been rping a lot lately and I have a ton of prompts that I circled through depending on what I felt like that day (or what I felt worked best). There was a BROAD selection too, I’m saying there was some Hydra Husbands, Starlander, Starker, Cegan in that last file I have. I’ve definitely loved and enjoyed Superbat and Brank, but I don’t think I have fixed starters for that in this last doc.

Anyways, lately I’ve mostly done SamDean because I really enjoy writing either of them (and like procrastinating on my fics). Omegaverse, genderbend, preseries, some curse related shenanigans, even some Swesson. It’s just a whole lot, mostly things that I really find intriguing but don’t know how to work into fics just yet.

Generally speaking, I don’t do angst, no matter what pairing. I feel like Angst invites a lot of projection that messes with the characterisation and also just drags the rp down or slows it down a lot. Also I get particular about ages, I’m not a fan of underage (shocking with the pairings, I know, but that’s not really what intrigues me about them), so I weasel my way around there.

This is a very general answer to show how big of a problem my rping had become haha — but once I’m at my laptop again I can see if I can find a way to share some prompts. Since I exclusively use text starters (as opposed to paras) that might not be all that interesting though? I’m not sure haha

Anyhow — RIP Omegle! Nows the time to try and use some of those ideas in fics, I guess :’)

It's so wild to me that antis haven't realized that fan works for ~problematic~ ships are fucking ELITE.

Hands down some of the best, most soul-shaking fic I've read and fanart I've seen in my life have been for ~problematic~ ships. The passion that goes into them is unparalleled.

I think almost every ship has it's fair share of masterpieces. I am so old that I honestly don't have a solid definition of "problematic ship".

"Illegal IRL"? Kinda hard to apply if the characters are non-human. "Incestuous"? Is wrong technically, but if they're both consenting and not breeding, it's an ethics issue that a great deal of IRLs can't even agree on.

I don't read underage stuff that the antis claim to see everywhere - matter of fact, I don't think I've ever, and I mean EVER, have seen an actual, full throttle pedo ship / explicit content with a prepubescent or young adolescent character involved - and I've read starker and bethyl. 🤷 If they're seeing it everywhere, I think it's not a fandom issue, it's a them issue. Kind of like that old proverb, "the first who screams "thief" is usually the culprit"…
