The Conrad Stargard books, inspired by Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" is about Conrad Stargard, a modern day engineer who goes back in time to medieval Poland, and uses his knowledge of science to help them fight the invading Mongols, changing history, rather like in L. Sprague de Camp's "Lest Darkness Fall" where a time traveler prevents the dark ages from happening. The Conrad Stargard books were immensely popular among Dads, the type that love to watch documentaries on fighter planes.

As the series went on, author Leo Frankowsky became extremely sensitive to the accusation that Conrad Stargard was just a stand in for himself, as Leo Frankowsky was also an engineer and known for having a moustache. So, he gave Conrad opposite traits to himself: as Leo himself was a conservative and atheist, he made Conrad both a socialist and a devout Catholic.
