So.....we all agree that Rise of Skywalker's audience score on Rotten Tomatoes was bought, right?

Like, even taking into account that there will inevitably be people who genuinely like the film or think that it's objectively good, there's no fucking way that what is almost universally considered the worst film in the franchise has an 86% positive score through legitimate means.

Star Wars Episode 9 set the stakes too high, ultimately succumbing to the weight of its own expectations. It feels rushed and is a frenetic finale to the series. #starwars #scifi #movies

The Sequel Trilogy Is About 'Right Now'

I’ve been reading a book called “The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire,” which is written like an in-universe historical book about the Empire in Star Wars, and how it operated and functioned as a political system. It’s written by an actual WW2 historian, so he is able to make it feel extremely authentic and borrows info about Nazi Germany and the Holocaust to highlight the similarities.

The really compelling part, though, is how it then touches on the First Order, and it drives home what I really think was the heart of the sequel trilogy that many don’t want to appreciate yet: the FO is a metaphor for the resilience of fascist ideology and how it can’t just be magically killed by taking out a Fuhrer or Emperor: it’s an entire philosophy that seduces ignorant and greedy people and, just like in the real world, the New Republic was naive to think they had conquered Imperialism and won ‘happily ever after.' That arrogance led to fascism being allowed to rebuild its strength in the shadows, and manipulate the system from within, to create the conditions for them to take over again when the world/galaxy was most vulnerable.

This is what the sequels are about: the need to remain vigilant against these ideologies, and if you fail to stop it returning like Luke did, then our best hope is for the next generation to rise up to the plate and ensure our forefathers’ sacrifices are not in vain. I think we will look back on these films and see them as far more thematically relevant than we gave credit for.

Below is a passage that I found particularly moving:

We are, right this second, facing down a similar moment as a civilization here in America: can we all come together and say in one voice “NO,” like the galaxy did to Palpatine? I have little hope left, but I want to be proven wrong.

In conclusion: the sequel trilogy is smarter than you think, the writers were trying to say something with meaning, and Rise of Skywalker could use more credit for the revolutionary messages it actually contains.

Every time I watch The Last Skywalker, I hope I might actually like it this time. But, no. It never gets better. As disappointing as the first time I saw it.
