The German dub of TOS is the gift that keeps on giving. One of these days I have to do a side-to-side comparison of the original and the translation (as if I needed any more time-consuming hobbies...)

In this scene of That Which Survives, Spock, Kirk and McCoy talk about the (long dead) woman on screen. McCoy admires her beauty, Spock tells him that beauty is transitory. In the original, Kirk concludes the argument and the episode with a sort of poetic "beauty survives". In the German dub, it's a much more mundane "Was wissen Sie denn, Sie Sex-Muffel?", aimed at Spock.

I don't even know how to properly translate that... "What do you know, you [sort of an adorable word for a person who is very 'meh *shrug emoji*' about sex, maybe even slightly repulsed by it]?"

Like, why? Why would you do that? I love it, but why? What was the thought process here?

Quick question: my friend says Star Trek is a uniquely US cultural phenomenon, is it true? Like she says Japanese and EU people can be into Star Wars but if you say “Live long and prosper” they give you the blank eye??? Do people outside the US even know what Trek is outside the reboot movies??

Yesterday, I watched the German dubbing of Star Trek Prodigy for the first time (1×13 Asylum).

It's really beautiful. The voice actors do a phenomenal job (especially Gertie Honeck as Janeway is just fantastic again 😍) and the translations are well done.

But I was sooo disappointed that Janeway and Chakotay still adress each other by the formal "Sie". 😔 After all these years? So, they're not even real friends? 🥺

And I was really sad that they had to change Chakotay's voice actor, as the former - Frank Otto Schenk - died in 2020.

For those not in the know, Unser Traumschiff is a recurring skit on the German comedy show Bully Parade, which did exactly the same things that Dans une galaxie près de chez-vous (from Québec) did in parodying Star Trek: take the bits that become so completely psychotronic in a *dubbed* scifi show from the 1960s and turning it up to 11. It's camp and demented and pee in your pants funny, and it's made of 100% love for the original.

TV Show - Star Trek: Voyager IX

Office days are never good for watching Voyager, you always start so late! But that's complaining at a high level, if I'm being completely honest.

Today I started with Episode 14 of Season 4, "Message in a Bottle." I like the design of the Prometheus, it has something fresh and new about it, even though the pillars in the sickbay somehow seem familiar to me. Did they borrow them from the set of DS9?

I've also watched "Year of Hell," and damn, was that two-parter good. Yes, the series has its flaws overall, no question about it, but episodes like these make it all worth watching, and I know there's still a lot more to come.

John Rhys-Davies as da Vinci is worth mentioning as well, a true delight, and we've seen him in the role before. You can definitely call it ideal casting.

What happens after death? (Mortal Coil S4E12) Just to name a few, and from this perspective, Voyager is incredibly diverse!

Unfortunately, there will soon be a change in the German dubbing voice for Robert Duncan McNeill (Tom Paris), and that's already annoying me. In English, that's not a problem, but in German, only relatively few voices are used for all the actors, which often leads to duplications. Just for comparison, at the moment, Tom Paris has the voice of Tom Vogt, who regularly voices Laurence Fishburn. I've already gotten used to that, and it fits pretty well. But from the fifth season onwards, he will be voiced by Erich Räuker, which means Tom Paris will sound like Richard Dean Anderson (Stargate SG-1). It's not about the actors themselves, please don't get me wrong. It's about the fact that the dubbing directors make such rather unwise decisions, much to the viewer's detriment. Also, often only well-known voices are cast, although there are enough different voices available. But one speaker usually has several regular actors, which drives one insane.

Well, now the Doctor still has his final appearance, and then let's see what else awaits us today. As I've mentioned so many times before, I still enjoy the whole thing.

watching star trek tos in german is the funniest shit, because they really just rewrote the whole dialogue in some parts... and the german version has a whole different meaning.

Like, you watch the original and the german version back to back and compare and sometimes there is not even a faint similarity in the topic they are talking about

TLOVM S3E4 in the German dub

Brass Skull also remains in English. The choice of what gets translated and what doesan't, seems pretty random. If you say Mythenschnitzer, you can say Messingschädel. Maybe because it's a place name ...?

I like Zerxus' German voice actor. Torben Liebrecht seems to be the German voice of Tom Hardy and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The translation doesn't use neo-pronouns like dey/dem for J'mon (unlike the German dub of Star Trek Disco). Instead, the translation repeats their name or rephrases things in a way to get around using pronouns in German.

When Zerxus says, "Tell me, holy one ... ", the translation is "Sag mir, Reinheit ...". Reinheit means purity, so yeah, it kind of gets the gist, but I still think it's an odd choice. I think it should be "Heilige," specifically because shortly after this, we get a call back to the Everlight saying "Every path can be a holy one ... ". Those two things are connected and should be the same in German, I think.

Brass Ring stays in English, too. Maybe the translator just doesn't like the word Messing 😆

Betrayer is "Gefallener" (Fallen). That choice will get interesting if we ever get more into the deities and their backstory.

In all fairness, the guy they got to dub Patrick Stewart in German for First Contact also uses a high pitched, whiny voice and I was shocked when I first heard it while I was over there visiting family. . It's not just you, I feel like it's just a German thing and that Star Trek generally would be a lot more popular over there if people just watched it with subtitles.

Have you ever viewed anything you’ve done in a dubbed version? I can’t imagine what it’s like watching yourself on screen, but it’s got to be pretty trippy to watch yourself performing with a stranger’s voice coming out.

Oh my god. Yes. I have one story and WOW is it weird.

So, in the early 90s, when TNG was dubbed for Germany, the actor they cast to voice Wesley made this choice (or was directed) to be obnoxiously whiny. Like, it could not have been more wrong for the character, and farther away from my performance. This person made Wesley a bratty, whiny, snotty kid. Like, WOW, did they fundamentally change how German audiences experienced this character.

I had no idea, because in the early 90s, the world was bigger than it is today. But I saw LOTS of letters and comments in magazines (and on Usenet) from Trekkies in Germany who fucking HATED Wesley with a firey passion that was even more intense than the way protoincels hated him in America. I didn't understand why, specifically in Germany, he was so despised.

Fast forward to ... I want to say 2011? Maybe 2012? Somewhere around there. I went to Germany for a convention. It was my first time ever visiting the country, and meeting lots of German fans all at once. And over the course of my first day, I began to hear stories from people who hated Wesley, until they heard him in English. In German, he was a whiny little punk, in English, he was ... well, you know who he was.

I wish I knew who made the choice to portray Wesley that way, and why, and why the mothership in Hollywood didn't intervene. I mean, he's just a profoundly different character in German.

I still haven't seen or heard the German dub. Last time I looked, I couldn't find it and I haven't looked again, since.

But now I wonder ... how many anime dubs did I watch over the years where the characters were totally different in English than they are in their original language?

the old german dub of star trek has a lot of slight changes to the script that make it all the more hysterical, but one of my favorites was in By Any Other Name, where Scott digs out the "It's green" liquor and instead of saying he found it on Ganymede, he says he found it in Sickbay, implying not only that he stole that bottle and that sickbay has an alcohol supply, but also that Bones either bought unlabeled, unidentifiable schnaps, mixed it up himself presumably out of medical supplies, or Scotty was drinking disinfectant

2. what’s your feel-good movie?

I don't have one, per se - there are different things that I watch, depending on what I'm in the mood for. There's Much Ado About Nothing (although I haven't seen that one in a while, and only ever in the German dub 😅), or any of the original three Indiana Jones movies, or Austin Powers (again, haven't watched that in a long time), or Romancing The Stone, or a Star Trek movie (Undiscovered Country being my favorite but sometimes I just want something in the background and then it's Motion Picture time). More often than not, though, it's shows not movies, for example Murder She Wrote, or an English murder cozy.

4. what flower would you like to be given?

Anything non-toxic to cats, first off, and then things that smell good - I love how peonies look, for example, but I cannot stand their smell. Same for hyacinths. I love the scent of (most) roses! Right now it's tulip time and that's lovely too. I also like a nice bouquet with different colors and textures that combine well! But please don't give me potted plants; I'm not good at keeping them alive! 😅

9. what calms you down?

Unexpected answer, maybe, but: warmth. Warmth (especially close to my skin, like hot water bottles, hot showers, heating pads, heated seats in cars) has absolutely become a trigger for relaxation and de-stressing for me. I even have a heated bed! It's the next best thing to an embrace!

Also, Kopfkino/daydreaming. Sometimes I find my thoughts spiraling into unwanted directions, and then I tell my brain "if you *have* to imagine stuff, let's imagine *nice* stuff!" I have a few stories and scenarios ready for that, and it works pretty well - not always, but often enough that it is a real, solid solution. Not necessarily with the goal to write those stories, but with the express goal to feel better, get my brain to calm down, get my body to relax, all that.

Snuggles are also a good thing, as is Kraulen - there isn't really an English word for this AFAIK; it's when your partner runs their fingertips over the skin of your back, just barely this side of ticklish. The way it makes my muscles shudder and relax is also very calming. Same on my scalp! Love when someone runs their fingers through my hair.

And lastly, music. There are a few songs and classical pieces that serve to calm me down - slow, nice lyrics, nice instrumentation/arrangements, that kind of thing. Music ALWAYS makes me feel something, and some music makes me feel calm! Here's one that never fails to calm me down:

I send this exact clip to my Garashir shipper friend (you know who) who’s also learning German a little and they got confused over the use of „Doktor“ in this case instead of „Arzt“ so there was a tiny learning opportunity here.

Very basically, in German, „Arzt“ is the job and „Doktor“ is the title. So Bashir‘s job is „Arzt“, which makes him „Doktor Bashir“. You can almost always say „Doktor“ instead of „Arzt“ but not the other way around because an „Arzt“ is specifically a medical doctor. „Doktor“ itself technically only tells you that the person has a doctorate which they could have in anything. It is very commonly used as a synonym for „Arzt“ though. (So if you do ever encounter a medical emergency in Germany you can call either for a „Doktor“ or an „Arzt“ and people will understand what you mean.)

Was happy that I could teach my friend some German through our shared interest in gay lizard yaoi.
