💛💙SPIRK FIC REC💙💛
Ok guys, this my favourite EVER Spirk fic, so be kind lol. It’s a SNW era fic where Kirk comes to spend a 6 month rotation on the Enterprise. It’s a beautiful story, with a fantastic plot and some exceptionally good dialogue. It’s got mystery and action and funny moments and it’s an utter joy to read! I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have 🥰

This is a pretty good fic, it was a lot sweeter than I was expecting. Paul's personality matches the show.
"testy butch ass mood" sums up a lot of Paul, especially when people mess with his work
I'm not sure if they get any more back story, I'm only in season 3, I can see this being how they grew up and then met
I haven't read any of their others but I might
I can find their account here, or else I would tag them

Title: Night
Rating: Up to Mature
Categories: M/F
Fandom: Star Trek : Discovery
Relationships: Michael Burnham/Rayner
Characters: Commander Rayner, Captain Michael Burnham, rest of the crew inevitibly
Additional Tags: Kellerun Genocide, PTSD, Romance, Character study, Death, Grief
Notes: Whilst I fully support the canonical pairing of Michael/Book for the TV show in fan fiction I genuinely think that there is a goldmine with Michael/Rayner. I have issues with that pairing though. Books actions in season four would have left me feeling betrayed, angry, and lacking trust in the man. That would not be conducive to me for a healthy, sustainable relationship. I mean how do you get past the actions that almost created a war? Which is why I do support the Michael/Rayner pairing. It is why I, to write my fics I am creating a slightly divergent AU where the original pairing can stand on its own and separate, whilst still enjoying the exploration of a pairing that should have been explored. tagging in 2 of the people I know will appreciate reading @clearwerewolfsong @tinderbox210
Night
Prologue
Some nights were harder others, those were the nights that the screams of the dead were louder than the thoughts of the living. Those were the nights when the thoughts of the battlefield, and the battle arenas and the deaths of compatriots, kinsmen and women, of lovers and family and the things the Breen had managed to put a gun to their head to force them to do, to their planet, to each other, screamed so loud, and demanded to be paid attention. Growing up happened in the blink of an eye, childhood ceased, death became normal and living was an anathema.
He'd walked the hallowed and the accursed halls of Breen battle arenas, smelled the blood of his species seeping into any porous surface, and held he body of his wife of six days as she lay in his arms bleeding. She'd survived her battle long enough to be thrown back into the cells they had kept them all in. If she survived it would have been the next step to the next battle. She hadn't. The injuries were too much, the blood loss too significant. They had been but children themselves, but they had carved out something for themselves.
He had caressed her cheek and held her face in his hand as her head had gently lolled to the side, the energy had been too much to expend just to hold up her head. He gently pulled it back to face him, tears unshed in his eyes, tears falling silently from hers. No words could be spoken for what was there to say, they had known it wouldn't be long, but in the minds of the young, love demands to be screamed from the mountains, and can never be denied. So they had taken what they could for how long they could take it for, and this was the early, bitter end.
Blood spilt on a dirt floor of the planets premier battle arena, the smell of old blood, vomit and excrement poisoned thier sense of smell, the dark an oppressive force that surrounded them, cloaked them in a privacy, and stole their final moments to see each other properly. An ignominious end to be sure. Her final declaration of love was mouthed, her blood had spluttered out of her mouth as she coughed one last time, the air she needed making the blood filling her lungs bubble, and then her eyes had gently closed, her final moments hearing her lover and husband declare his love for her.
The guards had come for her body the next morning, he’d taken two of the Breen with his own hands before they had put him down. It had earned him an audience with Tahal that day. She had looked at him like a piece of meet, the feeling had made his skin crawl. He'd spat at her feet expecting to meet his wife shortly thereafter, but she had laughed instead, had called him her favourite, that he was almost a Breen in his ferocity. He had hated her in that moment and all the ones thereafter. His rage had become ice cold in that moment. He had felt it grow and take root in the heart that had once house the love for his wife.
Where once his ferocity had come from a single minded drive for survival, now it came from a desire for death, his own and theirs, a never ending bloodshed that would only end in his heart failing him, as his wife’s had. And then they had left. And Starfleet had come. When all had been said and done, and the tallies counted Kellerun was down 65% of it's population, the forests that once was, was no more. Its beauty razed and stripped for whatever the Breen wanted, habitable homes had been decimated, and there was Starfleet stepping in, helping. He saw his chance there, knew that joining up, enlisting as an officer would help him take the battle to the Breen someday. One day he would have his chance at Tahal.
The day he put on the cadets uniform, he had compartmentalised his feelings, built walls so high that he thought they would be forever impenetrable, and then there was a her, and a ship, and a crew that were as unrelenting in their belief in connection as he was in his desire to one day kill Tahal, and slowly those walls that he had built, those compartments has begun disappearing and suddenly nights like tonight, where he was sat in his bed, sweat pouring, anger racing in his veins and a grief so visceral that pain seemed a paltry word for how he felt.
It was nights like this, that he would seek her out, knew that of the 300 or more souls on the ship she would understand. she'd lost so much that they were parallels in a universe of individuals and chaos. He'd read her file, read her chequered history. He had seen the decision that had lead to the mutiny, had understood that she had greater information, that her Captain had made a different choice. He had agreed with Michael. He had understood her thought process, had known he would enjoy working with her, even on that first mission and now he was her subordinate, she worked slowly on tearing down the walls. And she was the only one who would understand nights like this.

On Tumblr For Five Months!
Five months!! I still can't believe it! I will note not much of excitement happened this month. It's a new year so people have been busy with life. So I guess without much more delay we shall recap this month!
@ajtal has been doing his @ajtal things. Posting pretty art and has two new fics this month! "Ceramic" and "I.S.S. Opportunity". Like I have said before his ao3 is AJ_TAL2671 and is registered ao3 users only. Also, he has been working on a terran doctor cosplay!
@sadmushroomgoblin has been doing the fanfic grind. They are at a total of 1093 fics with 759 being Discovery! I still can't believe they are still writing about Discovery every day. I feel like I would die if I had to. We worship you our crazy mushroom majesty.
@ashlexzz birthday was yesterday. So go tell them happy birthday if you haven't already! They have been posting art on their Tumblr so go check them out!
@weltato has been posting some fics with month. If you haven't seen it yet they made a Mirror!Adira sequel fic that was posted not long after my last recap. Go check it out on ao3 under the username of Welcome2MyWorld.
Last but not least @mxflowercheck. They haven't been that active but we have been assured they are still alive. I know this because they message me to explain American things to them. Though I don't know if they are working on anything as far as I know. We still love them tho!
Finally, what have I been up to? Well, school has been kicking my ass so haven't been working on fics as of late but hopefully soon I will get back on the fanfic grind. Update Just Another Day In Eureka. Cause it has been uhhhh. Maybe let's not talk about how long it's been.
But I did post a fic about Paul getting high called "Dirt Man" and my school story about the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Which you can read here (registered ao3 users only for this one cause I don't need my school to find it.)
One last main thing! Its been a month of the Star Trek Discovery community and I am so happy for the dumb little things we post on there. Hope to see more of it!
I have been posting on @littlestoftheprincesses which uploads the official manga chapters from Guardian Tales coming from the hellscapes of Twitter onto here for Tumblr fans to enjoy and not have to touch that site. Also, I am trying to post more on @discoveryineureka so I will hopefully have more posts soon. (My DVDs and Eureka comic + Discovery comic are all coming tomorrow so I got some things to post.) And now thinking of it I should post more on @grayofthetals too tbh.

U for the alphabet ask meme!
Three favorite characters from three different fandoms.
(I am not doing Sandman because that is like the focus of almost my entire Tumblr and let's have this be interesting! Also, I cannot separate Dreamling. They are one character. The end.)
1. The "been my fav since I was a kid" character: Storm (Ororo Munroe) from the X-Men comics and animated series (her portrayal in the movies has been meh at best). She has been my favorite superhero since I was literally like 7 or 8 years old. There is just something about her regal take-no-shits attitude and how her powers literally put her in sync with entire planets. (She can attune to planets other than Earth, too!) Also, who else gets to whore (extremely affectionate) around with Wolverine, Gambit, Black Panther, AND Nightcrawler? Yeah, you read that right. Oh, and PEAK badass moment when she got pissed at Emma Frost in one of the early issues of X-treme X-Men and just picks up a fucking broken off metal pole, pins Emma (now with diamond skin) to a wall with hurricane winds and... ah, just read it yourself:
2. The "this is how I got into fanfic" character: Lestat de Lioncourt is a little shit and I love that for him. No, I haven't seen the most recent series. Which I am still sad about, but also I am quite happy with the Lestat that lives in my head, riding his motorcycle while listening to Bach's Goldberg Variations in his headphones (actual scene from The Vampire Lestat). I wrote my first fan fiction (just for myself, which never saw the light of day) in IwtV fandom. God, I haven't thought about those fics in FOREVER. I actually wrote a Lestat/OFC/Louis fic that had double penetration before I actually knew that DP was a thing that exists in reality. I was literally making it up as a fantasy. So, while it was not on purpose that my handle can be abbreviated to DP, I am ENDLESSLY tickled by the fact that it can. (So is my spouse.)
3. The "character I would saw off a limb to get more of in fandom or canon" character: Ash Tyler from Star Trek: Discovery. I love him, your honor. He has one hell of a Tragic Backstory™️ with a fascinating plot arc who becomes a goddamned space spy and is hot as absolute fuck. I would climb the actor who plays him, Shazad Latif, like a goddamned tree if I got with 50 miles of him. Just look at this man:
You mean I am stupidly attracted to a British actor of South Asian descent with big brown eyes, long-ish black hair, and sporting facial hair? *shocked Pikachu face*
(No, really, if I end up writing a sequel to Ten Forward it is going to be a Hob/Dream/Ash sandwich, guaranteed.)

OKAY so anyway that aside I also forgot to mention my husband and I will be starting to watch Star Trek Discovery.
Many of you are new here and will not know that Spock is the OG fave for me. TOS Spock specifically. When I self shipped in high school (I wrote so. much. fic. in my diary. loved that for me, helped me cope so good) it was Spock and Spock only. Everyone in my life knew I was obsessed with him. And you know what? I knew SO MUCH about TOS. Grown ass men tried to gatekeep my high school self and got fucking schooled by me. I knew everything there was to know about Vulcan.
I don't, anymore. It's been some time. But Spock still holds the SPECIALEST place in my heart even though I haven't talked about him much later. I did revamp our ship a few years ago - or rather, made a new version since I'm too attached to the original but wanted something more...mm...more like how I make my ships now, I guess? The original one was a straight isekai - due to time travel shenanigans I end up on the Enterprise and Spock and I fall in love (I knew it was him though like there was still Star Trek on TV and all that so fdksjahf). It was really helpful to me at the time and honestly it could fully happen with how TOS tends to be. Time travel is par for the course KJFHEWKFHW that one was "Love is Fascinating".
The new one is "Across Time and Space" and also came with me shipping with Kirk as well ("Solar Flare Love") and naturally the poly (cause how can you be a fan of TOS and not ship Spirk (I'm joking but like also it's truly iconic and important for popularizing slash fic)) which is "Interwoven Stars".
And that one I am QUITE proud of what I came up with. Beneath the cut.
In the new lore, Spock and I grow up together on Vulcan. We're really close. I'm not a Vulcan - I wasn't born there, and I've lived on a multitude of planets since they've moved for their jobs a lot. I'm a human. But we stay on Vulcan the longest of any of them. Spock and I, accidentally and unbeknownst to us, sort of form a childish and ill-formed Bond. A telepathic one, as Vulcans do. We don't realize this and no one else does either.
Eventually, I have to move away. It sucks. No one liked that.
Somewhere along the way, something goes super wrong during our travels. My parents die and I'm cryogenically frozen for several years. I'm eventually rescued and revived but...well my family is dead now. Oops.
I go into Starfleet, several years behind Spock.
Which puts us in this position that my first assignment is the Enterprise. And Spock is the Enterprise's Science Officer. And I am reporting directly to him.
We recognize each other!!! It's exciting.
Unfortunately. Spock has realized that we have this awkward incomplete bond. And once we've taken off he determines that, well, he's engaged, so, he's gotta break this off. And he does. And omg it fucking hurts. For both of us. Our minds have been in contact for so long. He's always been with me even if I didn't realize it. So I'm. Upset.
There's a shore leave right then (which is why he waited until then to do it) and I go to that and am Hella Depressed and LO AND BEHOLD Kirk and Bones are like ? We're adopting you as our friend now. You WILL have fun and that IS a threat.
So now I'm besties with the CAPTAIN and the doctor. And Bones and I bond real fucking fast I tell you fkjdhsakjf Kirk thinks I'm cute but like he's well aware of the power dynamic so he's not trying to make a move.
Anyway I don't tell either of them what happened.
Over time I think it just becomes apparent that Spock and I have feelings for each other/are awkward, and Bones gets on me about it like, "you and the green-blooded hobgoblin should just get together already" and I brush him off a bunch until I finally snap about how we can't cause he's engaged. He's very sympathetic after that.
Kirk and I are also somewhat awkwardly on and off trying out dating (with an open relationship) which is like. I like him!!! He likes me!!! But we also both like Spock and it's just...tense and awkward at times?
the whole Pon Farr thing will happen and then Spock is free to...to choose me fkjdhsakjfhdsak and we'll rebond and stuff. And Kirk is like, "congrats" all awkwardly thinking he's out of the picture now. But Spock and I will invite him into our relationship after some time of getting to know each other again!!!
so yeah that was a lot fkjsadhfkjds but that's the basic premise. I love Spock a lot-
#across time and space#interwoven stars#solar flare love#wip#it's not but pretend it is#I do have some fic of this!!!

Fic rec ask game
[I'm going through this list in random order]
14. favourite series
In terms of Stars, I've always been more into the Wars than the Treks. (I'd call myself a casual Trek fan; I've seen all of the original series and Enterprise, and enjoyed parts of Discovery and the new series.)
But there's no question that my favourite fanfic series ever, at least as measured by re-reads, is hundreds of words about two Vulcan OCs, their marriage, and their extended family and friends.
Pi'maat by sixbeforelunch
I've re-read every story in this series multiple times, even though I know barely anything about Vulcan, because sixbeforelunch is so good at developing a convincing fictional world. I love the world-building of a truly alien society, and all of the characters feel absolutely real (the death of a minor background OC in the last installment made me tear up).
It's about building a life with someone you never expected to know, it's about post-war trauma (both societal and personal), chronic illness, burnout, and PTSD - and yet it's absolutely uplifting, in the end.
3. fic that made you reconsider a ship?
I'm a multishipper, so this isn't usually an issue - I'll read pretty much any ship as long as the story makes it seem plausible. That said, I've never really bought Finn/Poe/Rey, but this charming little piece nearly convinced me.
the new three's company by verity

hello uh so I will not feel self actualized until I get into Star Trek but it’s so vast and I have no idea where to start. you’re a fan, right? any advice?
The good thing about Star Trek is that you can just pick any series to watch and it’ll make sense to you eventually.
(Note: this might not apply to the newer series.(definitely not to Picard, which is the one show that’s an explicit sequel to another) like Discovery, Strange New Worlds, & Lower Decks but uh. I’ve only seen s1 of Discovery anyway. It’s fine? It’s fine.)
Idk what other fans would say but my advice would be starting with either The Next Generation or The Original Series, completely dependent on one factor: Do you want to start with a show that’s going to be a lot closer in tone to the next few that come after it (aka Deep Space 9, Voyager, Enterprise) or do you want the campy space hijinks that make up Star Trek in its most undiluted form?
Because The Original Series is fantastic, it holds up remarkably well for a show from the 60s (aside from a few missteps here and there that, for the most part, seem to be earnest takes that have aged poorly.) It’s vibes are incredible. It’s all melodrama and Shatner overacting and Leonard Nimoy raising his eyebrows and fight scenes that mostly involve characters inexplicable ducking and rolling around on the floor (or getting their shirts ripped off.) There is a reason this show captured the hearts of people so well that it jumpstarted a whole cultural phenomenon and invented shipping while it was at it. (Okay, another reason to start with TOS, if you’re interested in it, is that it opens up the biggest and oldest parts of the AO3 map. Seriously, there’s Spirk fic from the zines of the 70s and 80s that’s been transferred onto the site and is a joy to read.)
But that being said, no series after the original ever fully committed to that tone again. (Behind the scenes reasons of the show being handed off to Rick Berman, but we don’t have time for Star Trek history lessons here.) The Next Generation is a lot closer to what the standard Star Trek experience is like, a lot calmer, a lot less overacting and a lot more, well, actual acting, less colors on the screen but a world that’s a little more firmly established. TNG is almost nothing like TOS, but there’s a reason it ran for seven seasons (if my memory is correct.) The only con is that, as opposed to TOS, which is fantastic out the gate, you do have to pay the entry fee for TNG (the incredibly rocky first season.)
(There’s also a few episodes of TNG that only make sense if you’ve seen the first series, but they’re more nostalgic romps than anything.)
You could absolutely also start with DS9 or Voy or any of the others. Like I said, they’re built for anyone to enter the series at any point, and there’s no reason you have to fully finish any of them before jumping into the next to test the waters for the same reason. The reason I’m suggesting starting with TOS or TNG has more to do with setting a tone than anything else, because for example, without the baseline of TNG, where everything will always be fine as long as they believe in Starfleet’s mission!, DS9’s darker tone loses a bit of its bite.
And personally, I’d say just start at the very very beginning with TOS and go chronologically. It’s as good a method as any to get into this. (Oh, I’ve forgotten to mention The Animated Series. It’s kind of an add-on to TOS, if you didn’t get enough of the space hijinks lmao.)
There’s also the movies, books, and video games. The movies, I’d say look at when they were released and make sure you’ve watched whatever seasons of the show are out up until then, or nothing will make any sense to you. (ie, don’t watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture until you’ve finished TOS.) The exception to this is the trilogy released around 2009, which can technically be watched without familiarity to the series at all. They’re basically ‘what would happen if you took the crew of TOS and instead of camp, you gave them explosions and lens flares’ and some people may try to convince you they are bad. These people do not understand how to have fun. I would recommend at least passing familiarity with TOS for the best effect, though. (And by best effect, I do mean sobbing when Leonard Nimoy comes on screen.)
As for books, I haven’t read a lot, but again, if it’s got the name of a specific series slapped on there, best to actually know that show before you get into it.
And the video games are crap. <3 Do not waste your time. (Okay, I’m sure some of them have to be good, but if they are, I haven’t played them. Maybe just look up a gameplay series on YouTube if you really need to see them for some reason.)
So hopefully that was slightly helpful and didn’t just confuse you more. tl;dr: honestly start whenever because you can always go back and watch the rest later, but either TOS or TNG are solid places to begin.

🗒& 🤔
🗒 — what is/are your favorite genre(s)/theme(s) to write?
as you can probably tell from the blog, supernatural and psychological horror are big favorites of mine. just as there's so many different and fascinating ways fear can present itself within the human experience, both internally and externally, there's also so many different ways of overcoming or mastering those fears, be it for better or worse, and i love the transformative element with all my heart. i also adore writing within sci-fi worlds, particularly sci-fi horror, action, exploration, and all flavors of robot stories; like constantine, i am also a huge star trek and doctor who nerd, and i love both the fascination and fear with/of the unknown. big fan of testing the limits of the indomitable human spirit, whether it succeeds, fails, or a secret third thing.
as for themes: transformation (physical, emotional, spiritual), repression, the different shades of guilt, defying fate, conflict (moral, internal, interpersonal, irreconcilable, ideals), loss of self, discovering & exploring purpose, the epic highs and lows of building/rebuilding yourself from scratch, push-and-pull dynamics (i.e. we both want very different things here and are both trying to get them w/o completely alienating the other person, so how far am i willing to bend to help you achieve your goals? are you willing to go that far or further for me in turn?), improbable found families, saying 'fuck you' to the inevitable, pushing your luck until it snaps, the price of forgiveness/the price of its absence.
i'm probably missing some crucial ones lmao but tl;dr i like to dig into the psyche and pit it against the impulses of the heart.
🤔 — what genre(s)/theme(s) do you struggle to write the most?
slice of life stuff is tough for me because i personally feel emotions either very strongly or very little, so i struggle to fill in the time in situations that lack the pre-existence of an adrenaline response/a sense of urgency. romance is also difficult for similar reasons, but also because i'm dramatic as hell and enjoy exploring characters who may have complicated relationships with intimacy and commitment (COUGH constantine COUGH), though i think i'm getting better with practice! action can also be hard to write because i simply have Not read enough stories where physical fighting is more central to the plot other than as a brief, emotional peak, so i feel like i lack the language to make it smooth; but i do like to write action scenes frequently and have one in...just about every fic i've ever written lmao so i guess i like to challenge myself.
as for themes, characters learning to mellow out and give up that supercharged fight-or-flight response and healthy parental relationships are the only ones that come to mind atm. i feel like i love to find themes i'd never considered before in a story or a character dynamic, so i wouldn't say i consider any hard to reach so much as they are discoveries to make, if that makes sense.
@fightwing / MUN QUESTIONS
#( ooc. ) OUT OF CIGS.#fightwing#this was Fascinating to consider lmao i hope any of this makes sense#( answered. ) THIS IS JOHN CONSTANTINE. FUCK OFF.

Random thoughts Picard 3.9 "Vox"
One more ep left--we're almost there, people!!

Wow. That was a lot. At least we have Discovery in the 32nd century to assure us that Starfleet survived!
No! Shaw! I'd been mentally preparing myself since I had a feeling he was going to die. I mean, if we get Star Trek: Legacy, I think people would want to see it with Seven in command. But I’m going to miss Shaw so much. Him, in his dying breath, giving the conn to Seven and actually using her name. That was so beautiful.
(BTW, I've written a fic for May that's going to have to be AU now. Being AU actually gave me a stronger ending, but I still wish Shaw was still with us)
The red door revelation--I kept seeing the Borg theory but discounted it as unlikely. But I was wrong. While the secrecy reveal was totally scary, I'm still confused. So, the Borg planted something in Locutus's DNA so that he'd essentially sire a child who'd become a Borg mouthpiece? That's an awful long con--plus what if Picard never procreated? But let's set that aside since maybe that wasn't intended. However, I'm confused about the transporter contamination. It seems like the transporter system automatically logged Picard contaminated DNA. Somehow the evolved Changelings discovered this and used it to destroy Starfleet? That seems like a stretch but I guess we'll go with it.
Speaking of which, I hope all the young Starfleet officers who were assimilated end up okay. (BTW, if anyone's wondering about Elnor, Terry Matalas told us that he wasn't on the Excelesor. So, that's some good news. Doesn't completely mean his safe. Me, I was worried about Miral Paris but someone theorized on Twitter that since Klingons mature quicker than humans, Miral's parietal lobe may be fully formed already)
Shelby! FLEET ADMIRAL SHELBY! I knew we were getting a cameo and had theories. But I never guessed it be her, since at this point, I thought it'd be a larger character. It was awesome seeing her even though she was taken away so soon.
It was nice seeing the Enterprise D again. I don't get as nostalgic about stuff like that the way other viewers do, but it was nice moment and it did resonate with me a lot more after my second viewing.
It was a good episode, though I'd say the weakest of the season. It's not becauses of the fan service because I absolutely LOVE fan service. However, I also want the plot to make sense. Unfortunately, this plot did not come together coherently. It wasn't nearly as bad as Season 2 but it wasn't as strong as I'd hoped.
PS--I'm normally a "what happens in canon stays in canon" type of person. But I would not be opposed to someone doing a "fix it" fic that has Shaw somehow surviving and retiring on Risa.

the correct answer won here but i’m still gonna talk about it, because honestly it’s pretty important to keep separating “fans” from actual media that a corporation paid to make and promote.
i’m going to use star trek discovery’s paul stamets as an example, because it was big news that he’s star trek’s first openly homosexual main character, and he literally says on-screen that he can’t imagine a universe where he’d be attracted to anyone who isn’t a man. he’s capital g Gay in canon (except in the evil bisexual universe, of course, but no one escapes bisexuality over there).
for star trek to backtrack on that and have him discover his bisexuality or heterosexuality would be a betrayal because of the larger cultural context. even through that’s a story that some real people experience and would relate to, stamets is the flag-bearer for being a proudly gay man on star trek, and they don’t have enough other proudly gay main characters to walk that back without it being a Big Huge Statement about homosexuality. and that statement is a dangerous one to make in a world where conversion therapy is still common practice! in that context, it would be Wrong for them to do that.
but even the most popular people in your favorite fandom have a negligible audience. if some random writer with 200 (or 2000!) ao3 subscribers really wants stamets to kiss a woman, that’s a personal statement, not a cultural one. there are no press releases or entertainment weekly articles. your mom won’t hear about it. this story hasn’t been vetted by a dozen people and a network and filmed for an audience of millions. the number of people who give a fuck are not statistically significant, and the real-world potential for harm is limited and can be avoided by personal choice (not reading the fics; unfollowing tumblr bloggers who discourse about it).
so it’s “wrong” from a “is this in-character in the canon prime universe?” standpoint, but let’s be real, so are most fanfics—and while it might hurt or disappoint someone who chose to read it, it’s not Wronf for someone to do it. it doesn’t move the cultural needle, and that individual fic writer didn’t make any promises to a huge audience in the “hey man how’s it going” universe.
For example, writing fanfiction in which a canonically lesbian character has a relationship with a man; writing about a canonically asexual character having sex; etc.

Say hi to your friendly neighbourhood Fan Girl
HI folks, I am Angela, 42, I hold a degree in English Studies and Psychology (against the odds - both parents died as well as 6 others, homelessness, undiagnosed ADHD and CPTSD).

My current fandoms are; Star Trek and Due South (it's my comfort fandom)
Previous fandoms are; Buffy, Stargate, battlestar galactica.
I am a major fan of genre fic, but will read anything. Currently ai am reading The Odessey, The Gododdin, and Star Trek Discovery Wonderlands.

A fanfic..!
Edit: AO3 with more chapters!
Star Trek Discovery Hugh Culber/Paul Stamets Before Discovery General audiences / Not beta read
Paul sits in the dim hotel lobby, tapping on his thigh with one hand and mindlessly browsing a PADD with the other. There is text on the screen he doesn’t read, and pictures he glances over but doesn’t look at.
His heart jumps at an incoming message.
“Be there in 20 minutes”, Hugh writes.
Paul is frozen staring at the message pop up until it disappears. His hand stops the nervous tapping to grab the PADD from the glass table, and to write back.
“Can’t wait.”
And he really can’t. 20 minutes, still? Paul feels like he’s been waiting for weeks – and technically he has. But he’s only sat in the hotel lobby for a while, just long enough to finish a cup of coffee and go trough his presentation one more time, sloppily. Hardly a way in which he does anything, usually. He takes pride in being very particular about his work.
But not this weekend.
After an unexpected encounter on Alpha Centauri 6 weeks ago – Paul checks in his head, yes, it really has been 6 weeks since he met Hugh – they’ve only been in contact via video calls and messages. Not that it hadn’t been nice – it’s been very nice – Paul was starting to get impatient with not being close to Hugh, physically.
For a while, he had been afraid to say anything, in case Hugh felt differently. He had tried to focus on his work, only messaging Hugh once or twice a day compared to the earlier long daily conversations and calls.
He didn’t mean to get so lost in the research, but that’s just who he was. One day, he had forgotten to message Hugh completely. He had spent his entire day calculating and testing yet another idea for harnessing the potential of the spore drive. It didn’t work.
He returned to his apartment, overlooking the research station on Deneva, defeated and annoyed. He had frustratedly kicked off his shoes, thrown his jacket on the couch, rest of his clothes leaving a messy trail to the bathroom. He didn’t pay much attention to anything while showering. He’s pretty sure he had washed himself.
Stepping out of the bathroom to be met with the warm glow of the Denevian sunset, Paul sighed.
Instantly, there was a muffled vibration coming from somewhere near the entrance to his apartment.
Oh shit, Paul realized. He had not looked at his personal PADD all day.
Quickly making his way to the entrance, he tried to grab the jacket he wore today from the coat rack. It wasn’t there. He turned around, remembering throwing the jacket on the couch, only to realize the buzzing was coming from his feet.
Paul grabbed the PADD from the case on the floor, almost instinctively answered the video call, before realizing he was wearing nothing but a towel around his waist.
Hastily, he grabbed the nearest shirt he could find, struggled while putting it on trying to simultaneously hold the PADD. He took a few steps to the couch and answered the call while flopping down on the couch.
Hugh’s face appeared on screen, his brows furrowed a bit, but his mouth turning into a faint smile at the sight of Paul.
“Hey,” Hugh greeted in a soft tone.
“Hi.”
“Where have you been?”
Paul had realized his mistake just moments before, and took a second to think of the answer, no matter how obvious it was.
“In the lab,” Paul answered sounding a little exhausted.
“Of course,” Hugh smiled. “Anything exiting?”
Paul sighed again, turning his gaze to look at the sunset taking its final breaths in the horizon.
“Not really. Another day spent with algorithms and experiments only to prove myself wrong.”
“Oh,” Hugh exhaled with an apologizing look. “That sucks.”
By now, Hugh knew better than to answer Paul’s disappointment with the previously tried encouraging facts, like “that’s part of the research. You’ll get there eventually.”
Instead, he had noticed, Paul took comfort in him just agreeing that sometimes his work was a pain in the ass.
Looking at the pale man on screen, direct sunlight hitting his face and hair, illuminating it even lighter and bouncing off his blue eyes with a beautiful glow, Hugh definitely agreed that right now, he would rather have Paul not so invested in his research. Maybe they could spend some time together, if it wasn’t for their distance and both of their demanding jobs.
Hugh sighed smiling, studying Paul’s white-appearing eyebrows, now furrowing a bit in a way that had become quite familiar to Hugh. Paul quickly turned back to face the screen.
“I don’t really want to think about it,” he huffs. “How was your day?”
“I missed you,” Hugh answers without hesitation.
Paul is taken aback by the honest statement. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to ignore you,” Paul murmurs, realizing there are at least a few notifications unread on his PADD from Hugh.
“I know. You were working.”
“Still. I could’ve at least messaged you,” Paul goes on to say, genuinely annoyed at himself for ignoring Hugh for a full day. He meant to keep his distance, but not this much.
“Yeah, you could’ve,” Hugh admits, flashing a grin that almost melts Paul.
Hugh is still in his white Starfleet uniform, although the jacket is open, revealing an undershirt with a far more giving neckline. Paul tries not to stare.
“But I had a busy day too,” Hugh continues. “I have time now.”
“Good,” Paul smiles, although he’s a tiny bit uncomfortable remembering that he isn’t wearing any pants.
“You’re home?” Paul asks an obvious question. He’s seen enough glimpses of Hugh’s quarters to recognize it.
“Well,” Hugh looks a little surprised. “I guess.”
Paul raises an eyebrow as in asking Hugh to elaborate.
“It still doesn’t feel very... homey.”
Hugh had lived in these quarters on this starbase for about six months now. He’d gotten used to it, and felt physically comfortable where he was, but he had never referenced to it as “home”. Maybe because he spent so much time on duty outside the starbase.
“I get that,” Paul answered. He in turn had lived in this apartment for almost 6 years. It was a place to sleep, eat and shower, above anything else. If there was a place he’d consider home, it would be the garden in the lab.
Both men startle slightly, as Paul’s PADD receives a message. Paul furrows his brows and purses his lips, opening the message. Hugh recognises the look from previous calls, often followed with an apologetic Paul having to head back to the lab.
Paul groans at the message in frustration. He places the PADD on the coffee table, disappearing from the screen.
“What is it?” Hugh asks while grabbing something off the screen himself. Might as well fill some reports if Paul must head back to work.
“Umm,” Paul huffs from outside the screen. “It’s Straal.” He reappears wearing grey collage pants and scuffing his damp blonde hair with a towel.
“Back to work?” Hugh asks with a tender smile.
“No... Well, not right now,” Paul answers, reading the message again. He scoffs. “He’s bailing on me for a conference next weekend.”
There’s an annoyed look on the man’s face, as he dismisses the message and leans back on the couch, defeated.
“Fucking Straal,” he hisses, just audibly for Hugh to hear. He chuckles to himself, trying to hide a smile.
“Where is it?” Hugh asks, apparently while writing some notes on another device in front of him.
“Betazed.” Ugh. That’s far.
“Really?” Hugh raises his brows and opens a new tap on his PADD with a swift touch. Betazed is closer than Deneva, that’s for sure.
“I’m so tired of having to act like an idiot at these things,” Paul starts ranting. Hugh nods, but is still flicking trough tabs on his device to look at something else.
“I don’t know anyone, or even if I did, I don’t care enough to remember them. Most people don’t actually care about the research and are there just for the show and... gossip,” Paul huffs. “Who goes to a science conference for gossip?”
Hugh glances at Paul and gives a small chuckle. He’s reminded of what often goes on during Starfleet Medical personnel seminars, after and in between the lectures...
“I know some people,” Hugh laughs. He’s dug up a file listing his work shifts, displayed in thick boxes of multiple colors for multiple sites and types of shifts. He scrolls down to next week.
“It’s obnoxious. Would be fine if it was just the presentations, but there’s always some afterparty you’re expected to attend if you’re to actually make connections and get sponsors. Escapes me how my social presence has anything to do with the research...” Paul rants on.
They’ve had this conversation before, a few weeks ago, when Paul was getting ready for another one of his trips across the galaxy to present his genius research to much less interested audiences. It was clear Paul wasn’t much of a people’s person. He was a convincing speaker, though. Hugh had been intrigued from the first moment he saw Paul give his presentation. Intense, captivating and so excited about his own work, it was hard not to be. Or so Hugh had thought. Apparently, he was in the minority.
“Why does Justin just get to inform me he’s not coming. I better be in a hospital if I were to skip one of these things."
Hugh looks at Paul on the screen, his face now more frustrated than annoyed.
“Please don’t hurt yourself for that,” Hugh kids. Although there’s a slight chance Paul actually might be that stupid, he admits.
Paul smiles back at him softly. A moment passes in silence, before Hugh continues.
“You know... I have vacation days saved up. I’ve always wanted to visit Betazed.”
