The old bastard was giving him an out. A clear sign that he'd picked up on his body's fleeting moment of weakness. Damn.

The option to keep tormenting him was still there—really see just how much of a rise he could get out of him and see if he couldn't gain the upper hand. It's not like Ford was giving him the time of day at the moment, anyway.

But at the same time, Stanley had already resorted to the grab-and-yell method and it was only a matter of insults before that lugheaded brute started swinging on him.

Fine. He'd take the rare loss on this exchange between them.

"For being the clearly-inferior twin between you and Ford," he started, as he made his way towards the front door. "One would think you'd be more appreciative of someone actually willing to waste their valuable time talking to you, Tough Guy. Pretty sure you don't have a lot of those left."

...But not without getting in the last word.

Stan narrowed his eyes at Bill. Seems like he forgot that Stan had been in the scamming business for longer than the kids had been alive because he made the biggest mistake a person could make when dealing with a conman.

He let his guard down.

Living on the streets Stan had to get really freaking good at reading expressions, a split second read was often the difference between getting away with bruises or being beaten to a pulp, and in the split second between dropping Bill and Bill trying to push Stan's buttons again he saw it.

Billnwas rattled.

Bill, chaos demon, Cipher, for a split moment seemed genuinely -scared- of Stan.

Good....that was good, that shoulda been good, right? (The part of Stans brain that was leeching childhood memories could kindly shut up it wasn't the same-)

"Look I'm only gonna say this once. Once yer whatevers complete go find someone else to bug."

And maybe fighting with what looked like a twelve year old seemed immature (and no he most definitely didn't feel bad for having scared Bill, the body may look like Dipper's but it wasn't Dipper, this was the same jerk who -tortured his twin brother- he really needed to talk to that damn axolotl about the body they gave Bill- )

"You're tricks are getting old, Cipher." Stan grabbed the paper again. "Last attempt was weak, even for you."

“HOW QUAINT, my dear little morsel. is that the best you can muster?”

talons click in deliberate steps against the floor as he advances with unhurried grace, like a PREDATOR savouring the wild hunt; star-flecked cloak trails behind around his tall, elegant frame, casting an imposing shadow that seems to stretch unnaturally as the faint hum of eldritch whispers follows him.

“now,” he continues, honeyed tone rich with mockery, but edged with something sinister and ancient; “let me educate you on what a demon truly is. you see, we are not creatures of petty intimidation or garish theatrics”, he pauses, beak clicking in a chiding tut; “we are unfathomable nightmares that cradle your every fear, the shadows that creep around your mind when you think you’re alone - we do not need to scare you, little one. we simply … are.”

a taloned hand extended, fingers curling with an graceful flair as though he were toying with an invisible chain connecting them, his silky voice a venomous caress against the ear.

“you see, FEAR is a fascinating thing. it starts small, almost imperceptible - a quickened pulse, a bead of sweat - and then it grows. it consumes. it devours - much like I do.”

the demon prince’s crimson sclera are ablaze with primal hunger now, as they lock onto his prey with unyielding focus and a slow, menacing smile eerily unfurls onto his pale visage.

“I can smell it, you know?” sharp beak parts in a theatrical inhale, as if to sadistically savour a particularly delectable aroma; “—that delicious little crack in your bravado, a whiff lurking just beneath the surface. shall we coax it out, hm?”

he leans in slightly now, gaze and tone a whetted blade he wields masterfully;

“but do take comfort in this - you won’t have to wonder what it’s like to face a real DEMON, provided you don’t make the mistake of testing me again. understood? so tread carefully, darling. for once I tire of this game, there will be nothing left of you to brag about.”

he straightens up with finality, aura of deadly danger receding slightly, though his eyes remain alight with malevolent amusement; then, he casually brushes an invisible speck of dust from his cloak, composure unruffled as he adds with a playful note;

“though I must say, the goths certainly have a better grasp of true artistry than you.”

He knew her so well. So well in fact that his bit of advice brought a frown to her face. "Ugh, that's a good point. Maybe I can make an ice cream cake and just set off the fireworks while he eats it instead."

"I'm going to have to buy a ridiculously large amount of ice cream aren't I," Stan chuckled, ruffling his nieces hair before setting her back down on the ground.

"Word of advice? Ice cream fireworks are a lot more disappointing then they sound, melts before you can even launch fireworks."

"What? No, I'm not... I'm not crying," the twelve-year-old says, struggling around the tightness in his throat in an attempt to sound super cool, casual, and grown-up. So cool and casual he wipes his forearm across his eyes.

What kind of stupid town didn't have a bus station, anyway? What even was he doing back in California? Why wasn't he in Oregon? Where was Mabel?

"I'm... I'm just trying to find the bus station?..." Dipper's proud of himself for how he manages to get that out, even if it sounds a little hoarse and shaky. Then he makes the dumb mistake of actually looking at him. The guy's concerned expression and kindly face reminds him so much of his uncles that he makes a sound somewhere between a sniffle and a sob, the guy's features blurring into a smear of color.

"I-I just wanna go home, man," he finally confesses, hanging his head as tears slip down his face. "I-I don't know where I am, I can't find my sister, I'm really freaking out, and I gotta get home to my uncles." // @doctorbrown liked for a starter!
