Society’s scrutiny prevents homosexual male footballers coming out!

Discrimination comes in many forms and at different severities, however homophobia in football is thriving despite the continued efforts to prevent gay and lesbian participants experiencing hate. This hate comes to these individuals in their safe havens, on the pitch and in their homes.  Football Vs Homophobia and Kick It Out are existing organisations that support equality and inclusion in football at grassroots level through to professional level. Although this support network is easily accessible and active throughout the year, discrimination still occurs in the stands and on social media. The problems with these campaigns are the lack of support they receive from professional football authorities, police and internet companies. Kick It Out urge that there is an expert panel formed to collectively take action against discrimination (Conn, 2015).

Social media forums such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are used as a platform for discrimination against footballers. In the 2014/15 season, Professional footballer Daniel Sturridge received 1,611 discriminatory posts on social media surrounding his sexual orientation (Agnew, 2015). This shows that footballers are not just targeted for their performance of the football pitch but for their life choices. This report also shows police only dealt with 31 out of 134,400 cases of all hate crime towards footballers this season.

In a recent survey 50% of football fans said they have heard homophobic abuse (BBC Sport, 2016). These figures show that although society is moving forward and respecting sexual preferences, there is little respect when on a football pitch. The England women’s football captain Casey Stoney (2013) highlighted the difference in attendance figures between male and female football matches and the fact that women’s games do not attract as much media therefore are under less scrutiny. These numbers reflect the chances of more opinions in the stands but this does not give fans the right to discriminate just because there are more of them! However, this does represent the main fears of coming out as homosexual: fans and outsiders.

In 2008 the Football Association (FA) issued a Respect campaign at grassroots level. This campaign was implemented to ensure respect from all involved; coaches, players, referees and parents or spectators. This campaign states, “Never engage in, or tolerate, offensive, insulting, or abusive language or behaviour.” If at grassroots level spectators have to agree to be respectful and non-abusive at all times, why are spectators at a professional football match allowed to abuse and belittle players because of their sexuality? The FA chairman Greg Clarke told BBC Sport (2016) “There would be significant abuse [for homosexual players] because we haven’t cracked the problem.” Homophobia has been a reoccurring problem in football and society for many years, yet the FA still does not know how to protect players and coaches from this discrimination.

Football, at all levels, still has a long way to go in improving the safety of homosexual footballers on the pitch and on social media. I do not understand why there are strategies in place at grassroots level but are not continued through to the professional game. Where is the consistency in this campaign? Those who attend a professional game can shout opinions and there are no consequences. Do professional footballers not deserve protection from this hate and abuse?
