I often write only light angst so it's not really heartbreaking but... I like this one.

For Shiki’s best friend, Neku had always been there. Shiki had never locked herself in her room for weeks, crying until sleep took her. Shiki had never waited, patiently, each day, in front of Hachito, for three whole years.

I wouldn’t have noticed this without the amazing @thestormfall. But I bet she’s right. I bet Square Enix did have the anime slightly change NeShiki’s ending there, so it would parallel Rindo and Shoka in Neo.

(I don’t have the dialogue here, but Neku and Shiki reintroduce themselves and the scene ends with Shiki saying, “We got to meet each other again, Neku!”

And in the NeShiki scene in the anime, Neku takes his headphones off there, like Rindo puts his phone away with Shoka here.

Agreed. And from the UK. So I could counter as the western, then again, I sure most west we talking about are those from the USA.

Are Europe and Africa even counter as western? I feel like just the America are what most people call western.

The more I look into it. NeShiki's general unpopularity in the west (while it does okay in japan, and japan supposedly has a much smaller fanbase) likely has to do with all the different values the west and the east have. Like in KNY, all the canon het ships (which go the usual underdeveloped, off-screen route. Which is actually much understandable given Japan's more reserved views on romance compared to the west) ended up being the most popular ships with the one not even being canon (GiyuShino) triumphing over all of them by trending on pixiv all year long.

I also can see why the west likely won't really think much of Shiki, she adheres too much to the standard 'nice girl' archetype and doesn't break enough gender norms. (Eventhough her personality being that way is essential to the MC's development) In general, the west just has much higher standards for m/f ships nowadays. So even if these two get together (which I doubt) there'll likely be more people trying to trash it. (Just like what happened with SoKai)
