In Kingdom Hearts II, Sora dreams about dancing with Kairi. And I realized that in Kingdom Hearts III, he somewhat does twice. He spends her around twice, anyway. And tbh, in his dream of dancing with her, they really were just kind of just holding hands and spinning around, anyway. LOL

❤️ An Odyssey of Two Brothers 💙
Summary: Separated by mysterious circumstances, twin brothers Sora and Roxas embark on parallel odysseys to defeat the four Elemental Titans unleashed by the sinister god of death and save the goddesses whose last hopes reside with them.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/47120623/chapters/118718188
I originally conceptualized this AU back in 2020 when I commissioned the amazing @rainbow-taishi for this artwork, but I never knew quite where I wanted to start until my friend, Phoenix, suggested I just start where the action began, which is how this story finally came to be ❤️
Thank you again to Jin for bringing this AU to life and doing such a beautiful job on everything from the costuming and backgrounds to the character expressions and parallel posing ❤️💙
And of course, thank you to my friends, Phoenix and Alja, for all their support 🥺❤️
#sokai#rokunami#sora#kairi#namine#roxas#duality#namixas#kaiora#homers odyssey was one of my main inspirations for the story and overall concept

Why I like Sokai
A friend asked me, why do I like Sokai. And I’ll admit, most of my response is just me and probably compensating for the lack of content from both the canon material and from fandom in general. But here are my overly intense feelings from an emotional outburst. There are swears It begins, how most things do when you are young, with a boy rescuing a girl. Boy likes girl and girl is fun supportive and a bit mysterious. Boy is clumsy unsure, funny and fierce. It's a classic story what is not to like when you are young. And then the twist! Her heart was with him all along. Then as I grew older I realized just how hardcore Sora is for Kairi. He braved hollow bastion with a wooden sword against swarms of heartless. She was the last thing that kept him from being truly broken after losing everything and all his work is for nothing, Sora gave up his life for her. A heartless, you don't come back from that. Without the keyblade (which as far as we could tell back then was the only one) there is no going back from being a heartless. And it all accumulated in 3 where Sora outright demonstrated that he would rather not exist than be in a world without Kairi. Holy fuck. Sora is not a knight in shining armor, he's not the chosen one and he's not the prince. There is no legacy to him. For all intents and purposes, Sora having the keyblade and his role in the worlds was a mistake. And Kairi. Kairi is a princess of light. An integral part of the universe to remain stable. WIth light so powerful it can traverse the darkness unharmed, call people back from the realm of darkness and even bring them back from being a heartless or keep them clinging to life after death. Her very presences is like a sun in a solar system. But Sora didn't have these feelings because she was a princess. But because she was Kairi, all the way back when he drew him giving her a paopu. When CoM came. Namine basically just placed herself where exactly Kairi was in his heart. And when Sora heard that person who was dear to him was in danger or lonely in need? The kid went nearly berserk and took down everything around him Org XIII knew that in order to get what they wanted out of Sora, a heartless killing machine, they had to incur his wrath and keep Kairi hostage. But even then, Sora's warpath leads him directly to their base and even then, Kairi called him by forming the bridge. Their story is endearing and sweet and precious But also incredibly tragic. As shown in 3. Sora would rather die than be in a world without her. And told us outright that he was tired of losing her. And I am more than sure Kairi is tired of losing him. On the cusp of their developing feelings, at each stage of their relationship, they are torn away. As though the universe is against them and their SIMPLE and CLEAN feelings for each other. A love so pure it bends reality. But takes a terrible toll on one or the other. Kairi gets left behindSora feels her hand constantly sliding through hisThe older I get the more heart wrenching it is to watch these twoKairi found safety in Sora when her own world was destroyed. Because he shined so bright. But Sora is willing to condemn himself to the darkest pits of hell for her. And Kairi has an unwavering belief in Sora so strong it keeps him tied to the mortal plane and to her. This is a love that surpasses the gods and only the deepest laws of the universe can affect them only so barely.....So yeah... that's why I like them

I love you
Sora tries to get his feelings across, but fears Kairi will misunderstand.
AO3 ff.net
“Kairi, I love you!” Those words weren't new to Sora. Since they were little he told the girl he loved her. He told it to all his close friends —which were basically just Kairi and Riku. Sora said it quite a lot, being too young to understand the true meaning of love. It was true, though, the trio loved each other a lot and they said so.
The young boy hugged his red-haired best friend tightly, making her giggle. “I love you, too.” Then the last of the trio approached them. “Hey, what about me?” Kairi turned to the slightly older boy and gave him a hug, too. “You know you're the best, Riku. And we love you a lot!”
“Yeah!” Agreed Sora, hugging them both. The kids laughed, before going to their next adventure on their little island.
It stayed like this for years until the day Sora began to think differently about love. And Riku, too. The guys stopped saying it to each other of course, but they kept saying it to Kairi and Kairi kept saying it to them.
Eventually Sora couldn't help but feel jealous every time Kairi said these words to Riku. They even had a little contest going how many times they got to hear it and the one who got these words from Kairi the most, won.
Now that he's a grown up —well, if you consider seventeen grown enough— Sora rarely said the l-word. It was weird saying it to Kairi and meaning it just in a friendly way. No, that's impossible now. If he said it to Kairi now, it was his heart speaking. But since Kairi heard it so many times from him, he knew she couldn't tell the difference.
It took a while till he even realized what his feelings for Kairi meant. That this was true love. That she's the one. And when Kairi told him she loved him, his heart beat faster and he couldn't help but hope she'd also mean it in a romantic way. But this hope was crushed, every time she told Riku the same. Now Sora deeply regretted using these words mindlessly and as often as he did.
He wanted to make Kairi understand what he felt for her. Of course there's always the fear that she might not feel the same. That their friendship will end because of that. That she might be so uncomfortable with him around that they won't see each other again. Just thinking about it felt like his heart's being squeezed to death.
But at the same time he couldn't just keep going like this. Soras love for Kairi was as big as the universe and he wanted to show her! He wanted to make her feel special. He wanted her to know that she was the only thing he cared about in his life. He just wanted to be with her. Forever. And beyond.
The worst thing was, he couldn't even ask her if she wanted to share a paopu fruit with him, because they already did it as kids years before they've heard about that sharing one will intertwine their destinies. He was so embarrassed when he found out, then he started to be happy about it and now he utterly regretted it.
But there had to be more ways to tell someone they love them, right? Well, at least now he knew that Riku was no help at all, because when he asked him for advice he just said he needed to figure it out himself.
Though no matter how much the thought about it, he still had no idea what to do. He couldn't keep this up a second longer! His love for Kairi was growing too fast and if he couldn't finally tell her so he might do something else he will regret forever.
So this time with no plan in mind whatsoever, he just told her so. “I love you, Kairi.” He said with all his heart, hoping Kairi will understand this time, but her giggle told him otherwise. “I know.” Slightly heartbroken, he tried again. “No, I mean...I love you!”
“I know, silly. I love you, too.” Sora did his best not to feel anything at her words, because she clearly didn't mean it like he did. “No, you don't understand!” He said desperately, watching her expression turned to one of confusion. “I really do love you!” Kairi clearly didn't didn't know what to say, so there was no other way than to use his last resort.
He grabbed her shoulders, ignoring her surprised look. “I'm sorry.” He said, before kissing her and putting all his heart into it. It was like a dream come true and he barely even felt Kairi kissing him back. They were both very breathless when they parted and Sora felt the need to say it again. “I love you.”
To his surprise she started giggling again. He could feel his heart slowly breaking into tiny pieces, thinking she's making fun of him. “I know that, Sora.” Sora had absolutely no idea what to say and just stared at her with wide eyes. “Did you really think I never noticed? You were only saying this to me the last few years and your eyes always told me the whole story.”
The brunette blinked dumbfounded. Was he really that obvious? Well...at least his feelings got through to her, right? “So that means...?” Kairi nodded and now he knew what she meant with his eyes telling her everything. Because now her eyes did the same. “I love you, too.” Sora was paralyzed for a few more seconds before he could finally act.
When he was finally able to move again, he enveloped her in a tight hug and picked her up, spinning them both around. “Kairi!” Said redhead squealed and wrapped her arms around his neck. The two teenagers laughed, even when Sora lost his balance and ended up on top of each other on the sand.
Sora broke her fall with his body, making her lying on top of him. But it didn't stay like this, because Sora quickly turned them both around so he's on top. He nuzzled his face in the crook of Kairis neck, still hugging her tightly. And he won't ever let her go again. “You have no idea how much I love you, Kairi.”
“I think I can imagine it.” Kairi giggled, hugging him just as tight.

RokuNami and Official Art
As the title of this posts suggests, I will be taking time to look at how the official artwork portrays their relationship. Nomura has personally drawn a wide range of artwork for the series over the past 15 years, but there are two key pieces that really emphasize the intended romantic bond between Roxas and Naminé.
1.) “Two Sides”
First used as the cover art for the official Japanese Kingdom Hearts II Ultamania in 2006 and later featured as a puzzle in Kingdom Hearts II Final Remix, “Two Sides” depicts Sora and Roxas with arms outstretched as Kairi and Naminé float in the sky with hands held.
What’s so striking about this image is the body language of Roxas and Sora and the fact that there are weapons visible. Both boys have their arms outstretched in a protective manner and neither of them look straight on or forward. Instead, they look, with battle-ready expressions, in opposite directions as if to ensure no enemy will sneak past. This protective notion is furthered visually by the presence of the two kingdom keyblades as weapons of any kind are often a means one uses to keep something or someone safe.
So, then, examining this piece, what are Roxas and Sora keeping safe? What’s so important, so precious that they need to have weapons or hold such a protective stance? The answer: Naminé and Kairi. Their allies (DiZ, Riku, Mickey, Donald, & Goofy) look up at the two girls, but it is visibly Roxas and Sora who are prepared to bear arms and fight to protect Naminé and Kairi; a notion that is overtly romantic by nature. It evokes the classic trope of a knight/warrior protecting his princess/lady.
The Kingdom Hearts moon in the background also visually emphasizes romantic parallel being drawn simply by its shape as a ‘heart’ almost always has a romantic association. Yes, the Kingdom Hearts moon has a larger purpose in the series and is not necessarily meant to be a romantic symbol; but, as a visual in this piece that is coupled with Roxas and Sora protecting their treasured girls, it lends a hand in creating a romantic mood.
A second iteration, sold as a wallscroll at various stores, brings more attention to the SoKai/RokuNami dynamic by cutting out Diz, Riku, Mickey, Donald, and Goofy.

2.) Kingdom Hearts Chi Second Anniversary Key Art
This piece, which was never given an official name, was drawn by Nomura in celebration Kingdom Hearts Chi’s 2nd Anniversary three years ago. It was also distributed as a postcard to a number of lucky players of the Japanese exclusive game and has been featured as a Key Art medal for the Kingdom Hearts Union Cross mobile game.
The body language in this piece is not as important as “Two Sides,” but it is worthy to note that all of the characters are drawn to be visibly happy and relaxed. For players acquainted with the series, it will likely make one recall the reunion scene in Kingdom Hearts II:
Naminé: So, we can be together again!
Roxas: Right. Anytime Sora and Kairi are together
Kairi: We’ll be together everyday. Right, Sora?
Sora: Uh…yeah!
The ending of Kingdom Hearts II offers a glimpse of these newly forged promises between the couples, but arguably, so does this piece. Roxas and Naminé are happy and together with Sora and Kairi. It’s often argued that Nomura ‘forgot’ about SoKai and RokuNami, but nearly 10 years after the game’s release he decided to draw these two couples enjoying a moment of bliss together vs creating another trio picture.
Moreover, by switching their outfits, Nomura has made it clear who Kairi’s other side and true shadow is even after Days was released. This furthers RokuNami as the canon parallel of SoKai as Nomura could have easily replaced Naminé had that been what he wanted.
In both these pieces, Nomura is drawing a visual parallel between Sora and Kairi and Roxas and Naminé. Kingdom Hearts I established SoKai as the intended couple and Kingdom Hearts II further emphasized that point along with introducing RokuNami. This does not mean that they share identical love stories. What it means is that RokuNami is irrevocably connected to SoKai. That even as their own individual people with their own individual thoughts and feelings, they are inevitably drawn to one another and share a connection that at its most basic essence is the same as one between Sora and Kairi, which is romantic.
Lastly, it is worthy to mention that these images were both widely distributed as the Ultimania was/is sold online and in stores and the Chi art was featured in online games and as physical postcards. They are both pieces that are meant to be seen. Neither were simple sketches either but fully colored by Nomura, meaning they took much longer to create.
As always, agree or disagree. These are fictional characters and everyone is free to ship whatever they want. This is simply an argumentative analysis for fun and those interested.

So... Do you prefer calling it Sokai or Kaiora? I lean more towards the latter because it roles off the tongue easier and is just fun to say. Granted, I only know of one other person who uses Kaiora and I haven't run into them sense.
You think so? I actually think Kaiora is more of a mouthful so I prefer Sokai instead xD But I’ve also encountered Sokai first and I’ve only seen one or two people write Kaiora, so I naturally lean towards it :)
The only thing annoying about it is that sometimes posts show up in the Sokai tag when people typed “sokay” in their post and I always get confused for a second before I realize that it has nothing to do with Sokai or Kingdom Hearts whatsoever xD

Does anyone think it’s quite literally adorable how Sora looks at the charm Kairi made consistently?
He does this a lot in Chain of Memories especially since his connection to Kairi is prominently the strongest at the moment. What I like the most though, is how it’s pretty much implied off-screen that Sora looks at Kairi’s charm more than shown in KH2. It’s a silly reason but follow me on this.
The only one I have to go along is when Sora takes Kairi’s charm out after finding out she’s gone missing. After acknowledging it, he puts it back into his Right pocket. The next time we see the charm is when the game ends and as you see…
Sora takes the charm out of his Left pocket. It’s not much but it does confirm that Sora’s been looking over the charm continually every now and then like in Chain of Memories. Otherwise, they would come out of the same pocket wouldn’t it? The fact that Sora still looks at it and also keeps Kairi in his thoughts at times makes my heart warm.
On a side note, those clothes do a damn good job protecting that charm from all the battles Sora has been involved in.
