Jess Piper at The View from Rural Missouri:
Meet Pastor Josh Blevins of Grace Calvary Chapel in St Joseph, Missouri. He says his mission is: Awakening people to the love, truth, and power of God, however, his actions say that he is anti-LGBTQ, anti-democracy, and anti-woman. He seems to be pro-consolidating power through local and state politics. Let me introduce you to the term TheoBro:
[A group of young pastors hope to spearhead a Christian nationalist glow-up as they eagerly await a “Christian prince” to rule America. These often bearded thirty- and forty-somethings have suits that actually fit. They are extremely online, constantly posting on myriad platforms, broadcasting their YouTube shows from mancaves, and convening an endless stream of conferences for like-minded followers. Let’s call them, as one scholar I spoke with did, the TheoBros.]
Pastor Josh Blevins certainly falls into the TheoBro category. He often preaches in skinny jeans, a plain white tee shirt, and Blundstone boots. He sports a beard and comes across as witty and relevant with online quips and trends. He is on every social media app you can name and regularly posts content. He seems cool…not like those other preachers. He is the definition of a TheoBro. You may think this new brand of preacher would be a little more liberal or tolerant but you would be wrong. I first heard of Pastor Blevins when he and his church started meddling in local politics — St Joseph is only about 45 minutes south of me, so I know most of the players. I started paying attention when his church, Grace Calvary Chapel, started trying to fill school board positions with parishioners.
This church was also involved in a campaign to ban books from St Joseph Public School libraries. They lost. It got worse. Pastor Blevins went after another pastor, Brian Kirk. Kirk is the pastor of First Christian Church and was on the City Library Board for a decade — he is also gay. Brian didn’t pick out or approve library books; he regularly worked on making sure the steps into the library were ADA compliant and made recommendations for building repairs. It’s kind of a boring job that someone needs to do and Brian did it with passion and commitment. Brian Kirk was ultimately removed from the Library Board in 2023 after a decade of service because he is gay. Yes, you read that right. He was removed from a city position because he is gay. Guess who worked with the City of St Joseph to have Pastor Brian Kirk removed? Pastor Josh Blevins. Blevins stated, “We are against the practice of homosexuality. Part of the grooming is normalizing sinful behavior in the culture.” His bigotry helped oust Pastor Kirk.
You’ll be pleased to know that Pastor Brian Kirk has filed suit against Pastor Blevins. [...] Bringing in pastors to do the work of politicians is as old as time. Before and during the Civil War, Southern pastors regularly preached on the necessity of slavery and the benevolence of the plantation class. They preached on the evils of the “atheist northerners.” Not much has really changed since then. The Confederates became MAGA. And just like poor white folks took up the Lost Cause to protect the oligarchs during the Civil War, the poor white folks of this century have taken up the cause of protecting the wealth of the current oligarchs. Preachers have always been indispensable in reminding their congregants that they may have to suffer as a martyr in this life…their reward will be in the next. This is exactly the type of thinking the oligarchs hope we all embrace.
Jess Piper wrote this pithy piece on her Substack the dangers of TheoBros and Christian Nationalism’s influence from the pulpit.

"TANKS, BAYONETS AGAINST MOB," Edmonton Journal. December 2, 1933. Page 2. --- With the wave of lynchings and attempted lynchings that has swept the United States come new scenes of mob violence and struggle with authorities. Above are shown two typical scenes such as have been enacted in several parts of the country. In the upper picture are shown some Maryland National Guardsmen, holding back a mob with fixed bayonets. The crowd were attempting to gain the release of four men held for the lynching of a negro several weeks ago. Below is a view of a National Guard tank that failed to halt a frenzied St. Joseph, Mo. mob when they stormed the prison and lynched a negro.

In case anyone was wondering what fascism looks like in the Midwest United States:
"On August 4, Steven Greiert, chair of the Buchanan County Republican Central Committee, sent an email to the mayor and city council saying that if Brian Kirk’s position on the library board was renewed, the Republican party would refuse to accept filing fees from members of the City Council if they sought to run as Republicans in future races for other positions.
The renomination of Kirk, a pastor at First Christian Church and a volunteer member of the public library board, has continued to be controversial since members of the conservative Grace Calvary Chapel began criticizing his support of LGBTQ+ rights and pushing for his removal earlier this summer."

John Joseph Hogan’s Missionary Life Begins - 175 years ago
One hundred seventy-five (175) years ago today, October 24, 1848, John Joseph Hogan, age 19, departed from his family home in Cahirguillamore, County Limerick, to travel to St. Louis to study for the priesthood. Not the traditional path to holy order perhaps, but his chosen path to fulfill his desire to become a missionary on the plains of the still-new country in America. Young John Hogan was…

Adam N. Schuster Residence, St. Joseph MO
An 1880s residence in the Hall Street Historic District
Built: 1881
Architect: Edmond J. Eckel (Eckel and Mann)
Address: 703 Hall Street, St. Joseph MO 64501
Growing up in St. Joseph, Missouri, in the 1960s and 70s, my main source of fascination was the city's historic architecture. A major gateway to the West during the 1800s, the town once rivaled larger cities in importance, and great fortunes were amassed there in the wholesale, outfitting, and mercantile industries.
The fortunes accumulated by "Old St. Joseph" were notoriously never invested in the city's growth; they were put into bank accounts where they preserved the power and influence of the Men Who Made St. Joseph the City Worth While (the title of a local history), while making the city a hermetically sealed place where nothing changed, and no outside influence or investment could penetrate.
It was a strange atmosphere in which to grow up, in a town where time stood still, and a conservative, repressive, and airless atmosphere prevailed.
On my many bike rides around the city as a teenager, my favorite areas were Museum Hill, just north of the downtown area, and the Hall Street historic district, just to the west. These areas displayed an opulence and a sense of past glory that hinted at St. Joseph's glorious past, yet a past that stood still, transfixed in a time warp from the turn of the 20th century.
Thanks to injections of cash, some of these mansions have been not just preserved but restored to their once-grand glory. The Adam N. Schuster house, pictured below in views from the Historic American Buildings Survey (Library of Congress) is one such mansion, a building that captured and held my interest from my teen years onward. Variously operated as a B&B and private residence, the mansion has survived into the 2020s in a good state of preservation.
In about 1985, when Linda Farber, its then owner, disposed of the property, I attended an estate sale in the house over a period of two or three weekends. Among my purchases were a painted folding screen, a pair of cast brass Chinese candelabra, a signed fan photograph by movie actress Norma Talmadge , a Royal Rudolstadt porcelain ewer, and an oil portrait of an unknown woman. These items were all disposed of years later before my move to China to begin a new life as a teacher.
The Schuster Mansion remains the most well-known local historic residence, along with the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion on Museum Hill, for many years the site of the St. Joseph Museum, and now a combination museum / events center.
Below are photographs from the HABS survey of 703 Hall Street, along with a video about the house from a Kansas City TV channel. The interiors are quite striking, and hopefully the houses' current furnishings are in keeping with its grand past.

Description of the house from the HABS Report
Toni M. Prawl's 1994 dissertation on architect Edmond Jacques Eckel [E.J. Eckel (1845-1934): The Education of a Beaux-Arts Architect and His Practice in Missouri] confirms Eckel and Mann (formed 1880) as responsible for the Schuster residence's design. Of interest is the mention of Stigers and Boettner as builders. Eckel had been in partnership with Francis R. Boettner until 1979, after Lewis Snell Stigers had supposedly retired. I will need to do some fact checking on this chronology.
The following photographs are from the HABS report, Library of Congress collection.

Schuster (1881) vs. Wyeth-Tootle (1879) mansions: Two Victorian Italianates, symmetrical and regular, with projecting porches and bay windows. They differ only in the heavier cornice and prominent roof on the Schuster, and the extra attic story on the Wyeth-Tootle, not to mention the asymmetrically-placed tower at the left, an influence of castles on the Rhine.
Here are some screencaps from the video above:

Interestingly, I haven't located any interior photographs of the Schuster residence online, other than the HABS images. Other Hall Street interiors have been illustrated on sites such as Zillow, but not this one. If anyone knows of such images, please contact me.

Who was Kagney Linn Necessary?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(the gofundme for her memorial/funeral will be at the end.)
Kagney Linn Necessary was born in Harris County, Texas in 1987, and raised in St. Joseph, Missouri and in Ridgway, Pennsylvania. [x]
In her early years, she moved to California with ambitions of becoming an actress and a singer but entered work as an exotic dancer before signing with LA Direct Models, a pornographic agency. Karter entered the adult film industry in September 2008.[x]
But that wasn't the entirety of who Kagney was. At face value, the only information I could find with a quick search was the basic information above from Wikipedia. All anyone seemed to know about her was who she was when she was in the "industry." I wanted to see what I could find about her, the person. Not Kagney Linn Karter, but Kagney Linn Necessary.
I raked through interviews she had, her personal social media accounts, and any other articles that I could find just to find any little facts about her that I could.
Tumblr media
I thought about omitting her time within the porn industry to focus solely on everything else except that. But I feel it would be tasteless to keep it out. I think it needs to be mentioned. I think it is important to show that women pulled into the porn industry are not these separate beings from any other woman with dreams. This was a 36 year old woman who was just like any other woman who was preyed upon.
Necessary released an EP, The Crossover, in 2018. In 2022, Karter released her debut album, titled The Take Over. [x] She would post clips of her singing covers of songs as well as songs from her upcoming EP on her Instagram.
In 2022, she began learning how to play the piano, even posting a video of her progress.
Necessary was also a recovering addict. In 2021, she posted about the things that helped her stay clean and how she was pleased at having a second chance at life. In an interview, she was intentionally vague about the substances she used, only referring to them as "candy" and "a little bit of everything." But with no insurance or money for rehab, she opted to detox herself at her parents home, working at their tanning salon for free in exchange for "produce."
She moved from Los Angeles to Ohio in 2019 and got involved with pole dancing fitness studios before being involved the opening of one in Akron, called Alchemy Pole Fitness. She posted many videos of herself having fun and practicing new/old moves.
In November 2023, she was posting pictures of her new house and how well it was coming together,
[their website leads to a website called Alchemy Space Studios and says that it was founded and run by a separate woman. But upon looking up the LLC for the business, Kagney is named as the registrant and she is named as the owner of the space in two separate articles.]
Tumblr media
In 2015, Carter claimed musician Chris Brown paid her $2,500 to be his escort. She reportedly tweeted things like 'I WILL NEVER F*** A WOMAN BEATER EW DISGUSTING' and 'HE IS PURE EVIL' about Brown.
I just felt like adding that because what a queen.
From her students from the studio and friends, she was known to love animals, including her dog, Murphy, and had a deep devotion to the community she was cultivating in Ohio. She was known to be fearless and empathetic, creating her studio as a place for people to feel safe and accepted.
These were the things I could find of her from her personal accounts and the people who loved her. She wasn't an object that will be missed for what "uses" it had. She was a woman who had dreams, who had a community who love her, who had a husband who loves her, dogs she cared for and loved who loved her, and a mother who loves her. I didn't want her story to be another reblog of a lost life.
I know this post is sporadic and clunky, but I wanted to just grab any information I could without crossing boundaries (ex. contacting the family or something tasteless like that). I just wanted to share what she had already shared with the world.
Tumblr media
Her friend, Megan Lee, has posted a gofundme that has already surpassed their goal. But I would still suggest donating if you are able. Rest in peace, Kagney Linn Necessary. 💜

Hi! I’ll preface my saying that I was born and raised in Savannah, Missouri. So imagine my SHOCK when, in episode 58 of The Magnus Archives (Trail Rations), when my hometown was mentioned. When I heard it that first time I immediately screamed and ran to my mom to show it to her. It was so exciting for my home’s existence to be acknowledged, especially by an England-based story such as TMA is.
So, I was wondering if you would know why Savannah (and St. Joseph) were chosen as the initial setting for this episode?
(Or if it was just a randomly chosen area with no real meaning LOL)
That's a Jonny question I'm afraid. :)

Tkachuk has ‘really special’ day bringing Stanley Cup home to St. Louis
Panthers forward visits first responders, children’s hospital with famed trophy
ST. LOUIS -- Matthew Tkachuk remembers visiting family in Boston, the first stop usually being the North End fire department where his grandfather, John Tkachuk, was the chief.
“We’d ride the pole, try the hat on, sometimes we’d go for a ride even though I don’t know if that’s allowed,” the Florida Panthers forward said with a laugh on Thursday. “It was super cool and anytime I see firemen, on duty or off, I always make sure to go say ‘Hi’.”
And when Tkachuk had his day with the Stanley Cup on Thursday, the Brentwood Fire Department, located about 15 minutes west of his hometown of St. Louis in Brentwood, Missouri, was one of the stops he definitely had to make.
It was an enjoyable day for Tkachuk, who had 61 points (24 goals, 37 assists) in 71 regular-season games and 22 points (six goals, 16 assists) in 24 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help the Panthers win their first Cup championship last month.
His time with the Cup actually began Wednesday, when he took it to lunch at Grassi’s Ristorante in Frontenac, Missouri, about 15 minutes west of St. Louis.
On Thursday he brought the Cup to his elementary school, Villa Duchesne in St. Louis, the St. Louis Children’s Hospital and the Brentwood police and fire departments.
“It’s been amazing," he said. "I’m trying to have that little mix of fitting everything I want possible in, but also want to enjoy it with those who are close to me. It’s been awesome so far and I’m sure the day’s going to continue to be awesome.”
There was no riding on the pole at the fire department this time, but Tkachuk did try on a fireman’s hat, saying that “it was a little snug. I’ve got a big head, but it was good.” He also took photos with the firemen and their families, displaying the Cup in the department and outside in front of one of the fire trucks.
Brentwood assistant fire chief Ed Beirne said when he told his staff that Tkachuk would be coming by with the Cup, “I didn’t think their eyes and mouths could open any wider.
“It’s an honor for us to actually be considered,” said Beirne, whose grandson, Faris, was placed in the Cup for one of the photos.
“Although we know the Tkachuk family is part of Brentwood, growing up around here, this is a massive effort to win the Cup. For them to remember and humble us by sharing his day with the Cup, I know he gets it for a short amount of time, but to share that time with us and then bring a lot of joy to the staff and family we were able to assemble, that is what’s really special about public safety and the NHL in general. It’s a family sport. All of us have played it, it’s a family, and this is a testament to that.”
When Tkachuk brought the Cup to the police department, he was joined by his immediate family, including brother Brady, captain of the Ottawa Senators, and father Keith, the former NHL forward who had 1,065 points (538 goals, 527 assists) in 1,201 games with the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, Atlanta Thrashers and St. Louis Blues.
Brady was catching up with Matthew after some early-morning training.
“I can’t just be riding his coattails. Have to prepare for next season,” Brady said with a laugh.
“This is our childhood dream, just to see it up close and personal, to see how happy and genuinely excited and fulfilled and satisfied Matthew is, it’s amazing to see. It’s been awesome to see, and it’s definitely created that burning desire for me to provide that for my family and friends, too.”
Matthew took photos with individual officers and staff members, who were hesitant as they approached the Cup.
“Anybody that knows anything about hockey knows the Cup is sacred, so we’re scared to touch it,” Brentwood police chief Joseph Spiess Jr. said.
“The Tkachuk family has a strong presence in Brentwood. Not only do we get to protect them, but we get to share in their celebration, so it’s cool for us. Most of the people in this building are huge fans, sports generally, but hockey in particular.”
When the Vegas Golden Knights won the Cup in 2023, it marked the first time that names were engraved on the Cup prior to players and staff getting their respective days with it. It was something Matthew appreciated.
“It’s really special for my family. Years and years and years of hockey in our blood and for grandparents and extended family that come to my house and see that Tkachuk name on the Cup there, it’s truly such a special thing,” Matthew said.
The family had its own time with the Cup by midday Thursday. After bringing home some barbecue, Brady and Keith, along with Matthew’s sister, Taryn, mom Chantal and his fiancée, Ellie Connell, took turns taking a sip of beer out of it.
Tkachuk had already spent some quality time with the Cup. He and a few Panthers teammates brought it to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on June 25, the day after they defeated the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. That day, they brought it to the Elbo Room, a bar near the beach, and Tkachuk carried the Cup into the Atlantic Ocean.
But there’s something special about bringing it back to your hometown.
“It hasn’t sunk in,” Keith said. “It’s been so much fun watching Matthew with the Cup with other people. That means more than winning, so it’s so cool. We’re pretty proud. He’s been around, grew up here, wants to be a part of it and he took it everywhere. Everybody’s loving it. We’re loving it.”
