You are 16 and your brother’s best friend goes missing. You don’t really take it seriously at first cause a kid going missing is something that happens on tv or on other towns, not on Hawkins. He probably just skipped class or got lost on the way home or smth. You disobey your mother who wants you to stay home out of fear for you going missing too (you don’t take her seriously, he’s is probably fine) and lie to her to go with your best friend to your boyfriend’s house. Except, the moment you leave her alone to go with your boyfriend is the last moment you see her. She disappears. And you might not have known your brother’s friend very well, so you could just think he skipped class, but you do know your best friend. And you do know she wouldn’t just ditch you and disappear. You start taking the disappearances seriously. A body is found. Your brother’s friend is dead. You feel guilty about not really caring when he went missing, but your mind is still focused on your friend. Are you going to her funeral next? All the police does is ignore you, saying she probably ran away, and not helping. You feel crazy, you know something is wrong, why don’t they listen to you? You wonder if this is how your brother felt, but policemen were looking for his friend. You get involved in some weird supernatural stuff and turns out, your brother’s friend is not dead, but stuck in some other dimension. Your friend is probably there too. Still no news of her. You work with your brother’s best friend’s family and your brother’s other friends and a weird girl to rescue him. The girl manages to talk to him somehow. You hold hope. She tells you your best friend is dead. Your brother’s best friend comes back. Why him and not her? But you feel guilty just to think that, he’s just 12, it wasn’t his fault. You feel guilty about your friend. It was your fault, your mind whispers, you killed her. If you were with her at that moment, if you hadn’t left her behind. You left her behind, for what? To have sex with your boyfriend? Boyfriend you eventually break up with. Boyfriend who also doesn’t take your friend’s disappearance seriously. It takes a year for her to get a proper funeral. You don’t have her body, you’ll never do, you go grieve at an empty grave. You look at the casket at the funeral and know she’s not there. It seems you’re the only one who cares, you and her parents, who have no idea what happened. You hear your brother and his friends playing in the basement. You hear your brother’s friend laugh. You’ll never hear her laugh again.
You are Nancy Wheeler.

Ah yes, Milkvan and my other fav romantic dynamic Dustin and *looks at smudged handwriting* Dart?

Giant E.T. figurine by Dart's cage vs. Mike dressing up El like in E.T.
And this is not to dehumanize El, like obviously the entire point of El's arc throughout the entire show is about breaking out of the dynamics that she is put into where she doesn't have agency. But if we compare S1 and S2, we can see that the writers have created this sort of meta situation with the audience becoming a part of Lucas and Dustin's projection of romance onto Mike and El's dynamic—a dynamic that the writers are very much poking fun of in S2 by recreating a bunch of the scenes with Dustin and Dart at the focus.

we have a WHOLE SEASON dedicated to Mike finding will and yet byler endgame is still debatable?!
and yeah there were those other kids too but they were basically extras, this is clearly a show about gay romance

honestly, if byler was a straight ship, people would've seen will x mike x el as a love triangle from s1. like, people would've seen mike and will as a possible ship from "it was a seven", and even moreso after mike spent the rest of the season like he did. if will was a girl, a single tender moment between them both alone would already be seen as an indication of a probable romance, and stuff like "i'm the only one who cares about will!" and the way he talks about will in general during the season, + the sheer desperation to find him and how he's singled out from the rest of his peers in that regard would most likely be seen as a confirmation of one. the story would 100% be seen as "this boy is obviously interested in his best friend, and suddenly a new girl appeared and he seems to maybe be interested in her as well. i wonder what will happen." (well, not exactly like that, because i genuinely believe mike was never really interested in el in a non-platonic way and that their entire relationship is built off others' expectations and mike's own internalized homophobia, which wouldn't exist in this case; but let's ignore that for now, since this is a hypothetical). s2 would make this even stronger, but would probably be seen as a case for people to root more for byler.
heteronormativity doesn't only make people expect straight romances where they aren't any, it blinds them to any romantic possibilities in pairings that aren't straight, when they would've seen them otherwise.

Mary Magdalene / Mike Wheeler
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“She was one of the women who accompanied and aided Jesus in Galilee (Luke 8:1-2), and all four canonical Gospels attest that she witnessed Jesus' crucifixion and burial; John 19:25-26 further notes that she stood by the cross, near the Virgin Mary and the unidentified Apostle whom Jesus loved.”
Tumblr media
“11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. 13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” John 20:11 - 13
Tumblr media
“Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.” John 19:25
Tumblr media
“16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him […] 17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” John 20:16 - 18

"The companion of the [...] is Mary of Magdala. The [...] her more than [...] the disciples, I...] kissed her often on her [...].” - Gospel of Mary.

The symbolism of the lighter and the bat
This is going to come up later, S2, so just keep this in mind sort of thing:
Jonathan couldn’t swing the bat and use the lighter at the same time. The bat you need both your hands to use properly especially when fighting a monster. Jonathan needed help and Steve was going to be the one to provide that help. It was to show how Jonathan is constantly trying to handle too much on his own and the lighter and the bat was symbolism for that.
So when Jonathan dropped the bat because he was doing too much at once and Steve picked it up, it was showing us how this was the start of Steve starting to help Jonathan with his issues/stuff he was taking on too much by himself. That Steve would be there to help when Jonathan needed someone to take that weight off of Jonathan’s shoulders.
Tumblr media
Jonathan can’t do everything on his own which is a constant struggle he deals with throughout the show. This is important about S1 finale, but this also carries into S2. Steve comes along and takes on tasks that used to be Jonathan’s to make life easier for him. To allow Jonathan to be free to live his own life more instead of just living to take care of everyone else.
Steve taking ownership of the bat was to forge that connection between them. It was supposed to be a reminder that Steve would be there if Jonathan ever needed someone/a helping hand.
That’s why they switched Steve and Jonathan in S2-that Jonathan became ‘Nancy’s boyfriend’ [got to be free to live his own life for once] and Steve took on taking care of the kids that used to be Jonathan’s responsibility. Steve also told Nancy to go with Jonathan gave them his blessing so Jonathan could live his own life/experience life instead of just being there to serve everyone elses wants and needs.
This is more a post for S2, but while I had to add it while I’m thinking of it. Steve comes along and takes on tasks that used to be Jonathan’s to make life easier for him like in S2.
